Service provides access to library

Christina Myers Contributing Writer

There was a time when the word library meant a building: a physical place where books and materials could be perused, borrowed and shared. But as the world changes, so too does the local library as it finds ways to not just incorporate new technology but also to provide services to patrons in new and vital ways, creating programs that are critical links in the community itself. At Burnaby Public Library, one path to do that has been the Home Library And Accessible Service program.

6 I AS WE AGE • SENIORS RESOURCE GUIDE 2016

The program provides home delivery services for individuals who may not be able to access materials by visiting one of the city’s branches. “This is very important to us,” said community outreach librarian Kelsey Jang. “One of our key goals is to make sure that the library engages with the community and connects with our citizens and this is one way we can remove barriers and

provide access. The library should be available to all.” Jang explains that the program is available to individuals of any age who have been confined to their home for three months or more, due to a variety of reasons from illness, frailty/age, visual or physical disability, or even a lack of ability to get to a branch (for example, a senior without transportation who does not have assistance from

“The attitude we take here is: we are here for you. We want to extend that helping hand and give you access to the material you need in the format you need.”

family or friends to travel far from home.) Additionally, the program staff work hard to ensure that the materials – be it books, magazines, resource information and more - work for the individual patron. “For example, we have an audio book service that people can access if they have print or perceptual disabilities – this might be vision but it may also be a physical impediment that makes it very difficult to hold a book.” They also work to ensure that patrons can access technology-based resources and information by ensuring they have both the equipment and

material into the hands of residents who want and need it, the delivery has a bonus aspect particulary important to many seniors. “One of the best things about this service is that it’s a regular visit each month – a chance to interact. You hear a lot about isolation for people as they age, and this is one way to mitigate that. We really build a relationship with our patrons, and we like seeing them each month and having that visit.” Jang encourages anyone who may be interested in services to call them or check out the website.

“One of our key goals is to make sure that the library engages with the community and connects with our citizens … the library should be available to all.” know-how to do so. Though the program is accessed by residents of all ages, many are seniors who begin to encounter significant barriers, as they age, to accessing a library branch. The service has proven invaluable and continues to grow. “We provided services to our patrons about 3,800 times last year, and we make about 120 stops each month at patrons’ homes or care facilities and seniors’ housing, often providing services to multiple people at each stop.” And while the intent of the program is to get

“We really do love to hear from people, even if it’s just a question about something, or they’re curious to know more. We want to get the word out about what we do,” she said. “The attitude we take here is: we are here for you. We want to extend that helping hand and give you access to the material you need in the format you need.” To find out more, contact the Home Library and Accessible Service, call the department at 604-436-5423 or find them online at www. bpl.bc.ca/home-libraryservice.

Cause for

alarm: the growing problem of elder abuse Christina Myers Contributing Writer

It’s been called the “silver wave”: as baby boomers reach their senior years, and as seniors live longer than previous generations, there’s an everincreasing percentage of the population in the 55+ age range. This shifting demographic brings with it a parallel increase in the incidence of elder abuse. All too often a “silent problem” that goes unreported or under-reported, it’s one that professionals are urging communities, law enforcement and support organizations to look more closely at in hopes of helping those who may be victimized. Part of the challenge in spreading awareness is the spectrum of what falls under abuse – the term itself tends to suggest to people something physical or sexual in nature, but those are only two components of abuse. According to the B.C. Centre for Elder Advocacy and Support, the spectrum of behaviours that seniors can be victim to include: physical abuse, psychological or 8 I AS WE AGE • SENIORS RESOURCE GUIDE 2016

emotional abuse, financial abuse or exploitation, sexual abuse, medication abuse, the violation of civil or human rights, and neglect. The abusers, too, can be a wide range of individuals: strangers, care workers, family (including adult children, spouses, and extended family), acquaintances, friends, and others. For example, a senior may be renting out a basement suite in their home to an individual who later refuses to pay their rent and eventually begins to steal from the senior. In another situation, a spouse may be neglecting a bedridden partner leading to physical deterioration or illness. A care provider may ignore pleas for help or assistance, leaving a senior isolated and alone. In each case, there is harm being done to the individual and

he or she may not feel they can document it or get help. In Burnaby, the Burnaby Multicultural Society works on improving awareness on elder abuse and connecting individuals to help; the local RCMP’s victim services unit can take reports of abuse and assist individuals. In New Westminster, a community-police collaboration called the Elder Abuse Team works with Royal City residents. In both communities, the Fraser Health Authority provides support and reporting assistance for seniors. For more information on abuse and getting help, see Fraser Health at www.fraserhealth. ca or the B.C. Centre for Elder Advocacy and Support at www.bcceas.ca.

The research is clear: those who continue to learn, engage and challenge themselves maintain better cognitive abilities as they age. But science aside, the real motivation to be a lifelong student is simple: it’s a lot of fun. Seniors are increasingly turning to programs with post-secondary institutions to learn about history, politics, science, art, music and much more – and they are discovering a renewed passion for education and a community of fellow learners who, often, become friends along the way. For seniors in Burnaby and New Westminster, Simon Fraser University is an ideal option, as they have centralized their 55+ programs at their Harbour campus downtown which is easily accessible by transit routes from both cities. The program has seen significant growth year over year as word spreads, and the population sees a shifting demographic. “We have had a steady 10 per cent growth in the past three years,” said Rosalyn Kaplan, director of the Liberal Arts and 55+ program in SFU’s Continuing Studies department. “The average age

of our learners is 70 – it fluctuates but generally the average is about 69 to 70. In 2014/2015, we had almost 1600 students enrolled in 111 feebased courses.” On top of that, the department offers a wide variety of free programs and lectures that seniors are able to access. Kaplan notes a recent lecture

on the destruction of cultural heritage in Syria and Iraq drew in a 200-plus crowd, and had a waiting list. “The courses and the lectures are very popular. The interest is growing and growing. If anything, our biggest challenge is finding space for everything we want to run to keep up with the demand.” Kaplan says that many seniors come to the program eager to learn more about something they are already fascinated by, while others come to discover something brand new – and the scope of courses is broad. “We even have physics. We have a course called To Boldly Go, which looked at six unresolved questions in modern physics. Many of these students haven’t been in a physics class since high school. The approach is really geared to allow everyone to have access to the learning, to make it

work for our students.” For some seniors, having not attended a class since high school or university, it can be intimidating to show up for a first class, particularly if it’s a topic they are unfamiliar with. But Kaplan says students quickly feel at home, often taking more and more classes in subsequent sessions. And while the focus is on learning and study, the side benefits are equally if not more valuable. “Of course, as people age, there is often a component of isolation that begins. We have found that our students often connect with others, and will become friends – it creates a community of like-minded individuals and sometimes this continues outside our walls into strong friendships,” she said. “But for those who are retired, and perhaps live alone or have few connections in their community, simply having an activity to attend, something that gets you out of the house and engaged and active, that’s incredibly valuable. We hear back from many of our students that this aspect has been very important to them.” At any given time, the program runs as many as 44 courses. Upcoming courses run the gamut of topics, from history to music and just about everything in between: dragons, druids, James Joyce, ancient Persia, jazz singers and French wines, to name just a few. To find out more about the program or to register, call 778-782-8000 or see www.sfu.ca/continuing-studies.

he new year is a great time for a fresh start – and that’s just what the Burnaby Seniors Outreach Services Society is doing. The long-time seniors support organization moved into new digs in January, joining the offices of Burnaby Community Services at 2055 Rosser Avenue in the Brentwood Community Resource Centre. Program manager Lori Rank says it’s a wonderful opportunity to work alongside Burnaby Community Services and helps to centralize and improve accessibility for local residents. “We’re constantly looking for new ways to help people – being here certainly helps us do that even more,” she said, noting that she is in the office Monday and Wednesday but anyone seeking information on other days can now still find help whenever they visit. “If somebody calls or comes in, it’s now a little bit easier to find what they are looking for.” Rank says that’s vital for their organization, which relies on volunteers, and aims to help support local seniors. “Our goal, ultimately, is to serve the emotional needs of seniors in Burnaby,” she said. This takes many forms, including organizing events such as an upcoming caregivers expo, connecting individuals to services, and most of all, supporting local seniors through their peer counselling program. “Being a senior can be a wonderful time, but it can also be marked by distress, isolation and other challenges,” she said. These challenges take many forms: anxiety, problems with retirement transition or financial uncertainty, family issues, grief, loneliness and more. “Our counselling program can provide that connection and assistance that

is so important.” Often, counsellors in the program – who receive training from the organization – are former clients who have themselves received counselling. “That connection of peers working with peers is very powerful – the counsellors know what the individuals are going through because they’ve been there.” The organization has been operating as a charitable organization since it began in 1987, with a goal of providing peer counseling and related services for emotional

support and encouragement for seniors. Rank notes that such programs can help seniors remain independent longer, improve mental and physical health markers and limit long-term problems that affect quality of life. “When we can help people navigate challenges, that’s very rewarding – both for the volunteers and donors and for the individuals who access services.” To learn more, contact 604291-2258 or find them online at www.bsoss.org.
