ew Westminster is a growing city with so many wonderful attractions, restaurants and park spaces in an urban setting right at the heart of Metro Vancouver. I’m proud to call New Westminster home for so many reasons, one of which is that it is so walkable and transit friendly. I love that I can walk to work, hop on the SkyTrain to come and go, or cycle on one of our many bike paths. We have some amazing parks in our community. My family and I regularly enjoy the serenity of the Glenbrook Ravine, the bustle of Queen’s Park, picturesque Westminster Pier Park and the newly developed Sapperton and Quayside Park playgrounds. I also love that New West offers a variety of cuisines from around the world. Just take a walk along Columbia Street and through the River Market to see for yourself that the choices are endless. If you love public art, take the self-guided public art tour along the riverfront, where you’ll come across WOW Westminster at Westminster Pier Park, Birds on a Branch on the Front Street Parkade, and Floralume at the Front Street fire escape. The latest New Media Gallery exhibition at Anvil Centre is sure to stimulate your mind through the mingling of arts and technology. Anvil Centre also hosts the City’s museum and archives where you can explore our city’s unique history. Come visit New Westminster for one of our many community events or for some weekend fun and see for yourself all that we have to offer! New Westminster Mayor, Jonathan Cote

Rustic. Modern. Italian In 1917, one of our forefathers, Giuseppe (Joe) Piva emigrated from northern Italy to interior BC. He spent the next five decades farming cattle, sheep, poultry, fruits and vegetables. Although he did not make his own wine, he grew grapes & provided them to close friends for their own bacchanalian pursuits. Piva honors Joe’s passion for farm fresh ingredients, traditional Italian cooking and exceptionally prepared food and drink with a modern approach. Bring your family in to experience the tradition, history, and good taste at our fine dining modern Italian Restaurant. Perfect for romantic dining, family dinners or parties.

From Transit

A drive from downtown Vancouver to New Westminster is approximately 27 kilometres via BC 91 or 20 kilometres via S.E. Marine Drive. If you’re travelling from the U.S. border, it’s about a 30-kilometre trip via Highway 99, and 91, King George Boulevard or the Pattullo Bridge. From the Vancouver International Airport (YVR), it’s about a 20-kilometre commute via Highway 91.

From the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal, take Highway 1 to Brunette Avenue. From Tsawwassen terminal, follow Highway 17 to the Alex Fraser Bridge and Highway 91A.

For a leisurely and picturesque river ride, the city’s Q to Q foot ferry service connects downtown New West to Queensborough. In the summer months, it departs daily from Westminster Quay under the Inn at the Quay and from Queensborough at the Port Royal public dock.

With five SkyTrain stations along two of Greater Vancouver’s three main transit lines, New Westminster provides convenient access around the Royal City. For more information, visit www.translink.ca. By taxi: New West cab of choice is aptly called the Royal City Taxi. Call 604-521-6666.

eeply rooted in rich history, New Westminster is a city of neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct vibe and character. In the next few pages, we invite you to explore the city and all its charms – from Downtown to Uptown to Sapperton and from eclectic River Market to bustling Shops at New West.

Let’s start with the historic downtown: New West was once our province’s capital. After the Great Fire of 1898 decimated most of the downtown core, the city has emerged today as a vibrant section of the Lower Mainland and a veritable hot spot for tourists who visit the alluring waterfront, historic buildings and flourishing food and entertainment scene.

hen you hear the locals talk about “Sixth and Sixth,” this is where they mean: the corner of Sixth Avenue and Sixth Street that’s the heart of Uptown. It’s one of the city’s favourite neighbourhoods for a reason, what with its mix of tree-lined streets, shops and places to eat – not to mention some of the liveliest events in the city. Meander our streets and discover this little gem of a neighbourhood

The neighbourhood has a host of eclectic offerings, from Malaysian, Vietnamese and Chinese food to scrumptious barbecue and brunch choices. Craving something sweet? You can find everything from specialty cakes to ice cream, or just sit and savour an espresso or a latte at one of the neighbourhood’s many coffee shops. Check out www.myuptown.ca for a more complete listing of eateries.

When it comes to feeding your inner fashionista or, for that matter, any shopping urge, this mall, with more than 50 shops and services, has been the city’s main shopping destination for more than two decades. Royal City Centre is easily accessible by public transportation and private vehicles with plenty of free parking.

Our original outdoor dance party, this festival welcomes top live concert performances headlined by the Chris Buck Band - one of the fastest-rising country music artists in Canada. With four stages showcasing some of the province’s best emerging talent, plus food trucks and beer. You are in for a great day! See www.uptownlive.ca.

S

apper is a military word meaning a soldier employed in the construction of fortifications, trenches or tunnels. In 1858, when New West was chosen as the capital, private soldiers, a.k.a. Sappers, set up camp in the eastern section of the city. The camp became informally known as Sapperton for “Sappers Town,” and the name stuck!

Steeped in History Sapperton is a neighbourhood rich in history and strong with community connections, with all the trademarks of a village and a distinct identity to match. It’s also home to the site of the former Labatt’s Brewery, where from 1880 beer flowed freely. Today, you’ll discover the Brewery District on that bustling site (200 block of East Columbia Street) and find all kinds of great restaurants and businesses worth checking out. The original Cap’s Bicycle Shop was born here in 1932. A few blocks from the Sapperton SkyTrain station, Cap’s is worth a visit. Besides selling and

Parks renting bikes, the store (434A East Columbia St.) is full of amazing museum-worthy bicycles dating back to the 1800s. www.capsbicycleshop.com. Sapperton Plaza is a contemporary urban outdoor space with a raised centre platform surrounded by wall seats. In the centre, the former plaza’s granite and cobble stones are now shaped to acknowledge the arch designs in the adjacent Knox Church. In addition, the original wrought iron gates from the former Labatt’s Brewery site now symbolize the neighbourhood’s industrial heritage by welcoming visitors into Sapperton Plaza at 411 East Columbia St..

Meander along Sapperton Landing Park, a serene one-kilometre walk along the Fraser River that includes bridges and trees – and close-up view of the vessels, barges and tug boats passing by. You can do pretty much everything at Hume Park, a family-friendly space that includes playgrounds, a swimming pool, trails, a picnic area, a water park, tennis courts, fields and an off-leash dog area. A few blocks away you’ll find Sapperton Park, which features one of the city’s newest adventure playgrounds and spray park, picnic areas and sports field. DISCOVER NEW WESTMINSTER

here’s no better place to get to know a city than a market. There’s even something almost charmed about a public market – the aromas, the energy and smiles from friendly merchants. River Market embodies that quintessential market experience – simple yet impressive, indulgent yet wholesome. Nestled along the mighty Fraser River, the market is a treasure trove full of independent vendors selling the highest quality local produce, prepared foods, international teas, flowers and handmade crafts as well as some culinary gems. Regardless of what time of year it is, there are throngs of people milling about, buying fruit and cheeses, or dining outdoors and enjoying a little lunch music from one of its regular buskers, while watching boats and birds go by. Need flowers for your host? With stems and blooms sourced from local growers and suppliers, Bunches & Blooms creates striking arrangements that are at times dramatic or beautifully simple. For the serious chocolate lover, Origins Chocolate Bar offers some of the best bean-to-bar offerings in the city. Want to pack a picnic? Donald’s Market carries a wide selection of well-priced organic and conventional food, drinks and grocery items. Do you have a creative acrobat, dancer or contortionist in the family? Discover the thrill of high-flying acrobats at the family-owned Vancouver Circus School.

www.rivermarket.ca From buying organic and local produce to enjoying a meal from one of the market’s independent restaurants to special hosted events, the revitalized River Market showcases 25 of the province’s best independent restaurants, shops and schools all under one roof.

Getting around New West has never been easier, especially by SkyTrain

T

he New Westminster SkyTrain station is unlike others in the area, as it’s become a real centre of activity where you can get your groceries and buy a new outfit at the same time. No longer just a place to pass through, it’s a destination where you can grab a bite, have a cup of java, shop, get your hair cut, do your banking and even watch a movie. Welcome to the Shops at New West, fittingly situated at the New Westminster SkyTrain station. Anchored by Safeway, the Landmark Cinema, and Shopper’s Drug Mart, the complex offers a great mix of national and local retailers, restaurants and entertainment, making this the shopping hub of this active neighbourhood. The station was the first in Canada in 2012 to have a direct connection to a shopping centre at the platform level, and today, it’s completely integrated into the bustling community. Whether you are craving pizza, sushi, Thai, Japanese, or fast food chains like Tim Hortons and A&W Restaurant, Shops at New West has you covered. There’s even a Starbucks, BobaCabana Bubble Tea, North Noodle House and a Poke Bar. Next time you are waiting for a train, give yourself time to check out the Shops at New West.
