ediscovering a town from my childhood and seeing how it has established its eclectic identity has been enlightening. Since I took on the role of CEO of the New West Chamber six months ago, I am constantly finding authentic, innovative and successful businesses around each corner. Everywhere I go in New West, there is a feeling of excitement and resurgence. New West is reinvigorating with energy and ideas that complement businesses that have thrived and served the community well, some for more than a century.

Chamber members are plugged into key City of New Westminster activities though our participation on the Intelligent Cities Initiative, IDEA Centre and economic development advisory board. I hope you enjoy this edition of our chamber magazine, Doing Business in New Westminster, and I look forward to doing just that with you, in the future.

The face of the chamber is changing, too. We have a new look that aligns with our renewed vision for a bright, bold, and progressive future shaped by businesses working collaboratively with other stakeholders. Your chamber strives to be relevant, valuable, and responsive. We have launched new initiatives such as Women of New West, a networking series that supports the needs of female entrepreneurs and business owners, and have tailored our Leadership Series to showcase industries and businesses at the forefront of our community.

INTRODUCTIONS

I

n the tradition of dynamic leadership set by past presidents of the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce, incoming chair Paul Butler is determined to maintain and promote a high profile for the chamber both locally and at all levels of government. He believes that through a collective and collaborative approach, a community such as New Westminster can “punch far above its weight” in seeking action on the many and varied issues facing modern business.

2017 / 2018 CHAIR NW CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

PAUL BUTLER

Paul has a longstanding association with the local business community since joining Westminster Savings Credit Union in 2002, and he currently manages the Hastings Heights branch in neighbouring Burnaby. He is pleased to welcome Lizz Kelly, the new CEO of the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce. Her enthusiasm is contagious, her passion undeniable and her visions inspiring. Lizz’s first six months have seen the introduction of Women of New West and a bold new look for the chamber’s brand. Paul anticipates the board continuing to support the chamber’s role in spearheading change, engaging with local citizens and working with community initiatives, such as the In-

telligent Cities Initiative, IDEA Centre and economic development advisory board. An equally important focus for the chamber will be the maintenance and development of member services. As business evolves, members will require new services to continue to remain competitive. Competitive ability is critical in creating local employment and business activity, and the chamber will continue to find ways to assist members in growing their business. The New Westminster Chamber also plays a vital role in the business community of being the advocate and leader for business interests not just within New Westminster, but regionally as well as provincially. A strong and healthy alliance with other chambers and board of trade provides us with information and represents the collective views of our chamber members to all levels of government, ensuring that your voice is heard. The chamber is also committed to the local community and will continue to engage citizens in its consultative and advocacy efforts. Together we are stronger. Come and join us.

anada’s oldest city has a long and exciting history of commerce. What was once a commercial centre during the gold rushes has today grown into a city seizing opportunity through progress and innovation in the digital age. Working together, we have focused our creative thinking and spirit into creating a positive business environment and livable community, and the results are transforming our community. We are one of the few cities in North America to install a high-speed dark fibre network to foster business growth and innovation. Our work to leverage Fraser Health’s expansion at Royal Columbian Hospital has led to the IDEA Centre ini-

tiative, which will create a hub for medical research, technology and post-secondary partnerships. These developments along with others have led to New Westminster being selected from more than 400 cities worldwide for SMART21 status by the Intelligent Community Forum. Important collaboration with business stakeholders such as the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce will continue to play an important role in our progress. Whether your business is big or small, I encourage you to capture the tremendous opportunity that exists in our city and Invest New West.

IDENTITY ince becoming the CEO of the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce in August 2016, Lizz Kelly has been working to reposition the organization as one of the leaders of a thriving, dynamic and progressive business community. Riding on the coattails of the city’s long history is no longer good enough.

To reflect the chamber’s new direction and the new energy fuelling New Westminster’s business community, the organization recently adopted a new logo and colour scheme. Kelly talks about the chamber’s new identity and what it signifies. What does the chamber’s new logo say about its identity and role in the community?

The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce is one of a number of collaborators working to change the community’s economic future and prosperity. There are business improvement associations, an economic development office at the city, a thriving arts community, developers, multiple levels of government and business leaders here. We see ourselves as a part of a group working together for change. The logo represents the listening we must do, the collaborative partnerships we form, and the many pieces that come together. Plus, the

icons evoke stones – a nod to our heritage and our strong foundation. Why is this the time to introduce a new identity for the chamber?

A new brand is one of a number of steps in improving the relevancy of the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce. In the past few years, we have made changes to reflect our forward thinking, including the introduction of several new events and partnerships, work toward increasing our revenue sources, and increased outreach. Our old logo and branding was no longer reflective of our membership or our community, and the time had come to visually announce the innovations we are implementing. How important is creating a brand identity for the chamber? What role can it play for members and for conveying a message to other communities?

Our unique voice and position in the community as business leaders and role models means our brand identity needs to stand out and stand for what we believe in. Times are changing in New West; gone are the days of resource-dependent heavy industries. As a community, we stand on the precipice of change and invite knowledge-based workers and industries to join us here, as the condi-

tions for success are put in place. City initiatives such as BridgeNet and the IDEA Centre make it clear that New West is open for a new kind of business leader, and as the chamber, we need people to understand we can advocate on their behalf. I’m sure it’s not a coincidence that the new logo has come with a new CEO; how do you plan to build the chamber’s new identity?

The chamber needs to increase its role as an advocate and collaborator and drive awareness to a new way to do business. Our new visual identity can help with that; the brand mark is unique in the community and will become well recognized through communications work and through direct, one-on-one interactions. My role is to be reflective of the business owners and to support and encourage them to succeed. We recently created a Women of New West networking group in response to feedback, and we’d like business owners to know that we are listening, we are adapting, we are responsive. I’m here for businesses, whether they aren’t even formed or whether they are celebrating their 150th anniversary. New West is welcoming and inclusive, and so is the chamber.

COMMUNITY HELPS TURN

S

usan Greig’s 39-page business plan for 100 Braid Street Studios was about more than just dollars and cents. It was an outline for building a community. Three years on, she’s achieved just that; 100 Braid Street is a collective of 16 independent artists who are also entrepreneurs. From their allocated spaces within the former distillery warehouse at New Westminster’s eastern industrial edge, the painters, jewellers, fabric artists, sculptors and lithographers drive and learn from each other creatively and professionally.

WORDS AND PHOTOS BY MARIO BARTEL

“My dream was to work with other artists and business owners, because that’s exactly what they are,” says Greig, who left a 10-year career as a director at B.C. Children’s Hospital to pursue her dream. “You have to learn the business of art. My role here is to help them with their businesses.”

“ Y O U H AV E TO LEARN THE BUSINESS OF ART”

Bringing the artists into the space is just the beginning of that process. Greig interviews each artist looking to rent studio space to ascertain their commitment to their art. »

WORKING TOGETHER

“I’m looking for people who want to be here during the week and treat it as a job,” says Greig. “That’s where the community comes from.” Indeed, on a rainy day in the middle of the week, four artists are busily working on projects in their open, airy studio spaces that line the perimeter of the old warehouse. The expansive centre of the room is used to host events like wedding receptions, fundraisers and art classes. Those are what pay the bulk of the bills, says Greig. Most of the studios don’t have doors, the walls are low; everyone can see what everyone else is up to. Between brush strokes or while waiting for the soldering iron to heat up, the artists visit with each other. Sometimes it’s just to chat or deliver a coffee. Sometimes it’s to exchange ideas or mine creative inspiration. Through the course of a day, Greig drops by each studio to catch up with the artist, maybe explore new opportunities to market their work. She laughs heartily when it’s suggested she’s like a den mother. “It’s really what they put into it,” says Greig. “This is about community and learning from each other.” Once a month the community checks in with each other formally, to find out about upcoming shows and new opportunities to exhibit their work. There’s also a regular series of workshops called “Artovation.” With the support of the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce and the Arts Council of New Westminster, guest experts on topics like marketing, social media, gallery art rental programs and preparing work for exhibition are brought in to share knowledge.

“SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS”

Susan Greig is living her dream of bringing together professional artists to share knowledge, experience and inspiration at her 100 Braid Street Studios.

SUSAN GREIG 100 BRAID STREET STUDIOS

“Success breeds success,” says Greig. “Artists can push each other into new directions, help each other break into different segments of the market.” Like Iris Mes-Low. An established painter in her native Netherlands before she moved to British Columbia, she’s learning the North American art market from the ground up. “People let me know when there is a show, where I can sign up for stuff,” says Mes-Low. “I think you have to get away from that image of the starving artist.”

And always there is an empathetic ear available to help work out problems and overcome doubts.

Dutch painter Iris Mes-Low is working on building her market from the ground up in Canada.

“Artists face fear,” says Greig. “It’s a huge step. But it’s really about what they put into it.”

NEWWESTCHAMBER.COM

The capacity for shared knowledge at 100 Braid Street is almost limitless, says Greig. For instance, an artist may not grasp the importance of having a proper, well-written bio, but they can be a whiz at using social media platforms like Instagram to build a following.

A

WORDS AND PHOTOS BY MARIO BARTEL

new partnership between the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce and Fraser Works Co-op is helping connect employers and potential employees. Fittingly, the program is called CONNECTIONS.

That can be especially valuable in a job market like New West, which is largely made up of small and family-owned businesses. Some of them have never hired an employee before, says Tracey Fraser, the general manager of Fraser Works.

In this day and age of free online classified ads that can open the floodgates of applicants for posted jobs, CONNECTIONS functions as a kind of initial vetting, says Nimmi Bangert, the program’s coordinator. “We do the pre-screening of potential employees that ensures they’re a right fit for a job.”

“That’s a whole learning curve for them,” says Fraser. “There’s not a Hiring for Dummies book out there. We can help them with that.” The program is proactive. Rather than wait around for a business to decide it needs to hire, then mining traditional sources like

classified ads to find that employee, Bangert talks to chamber members to learn about their business challenges and evaluate their possible employment needs. “You have a chat and sometimes they may not be hiring today, they may be hiring in three months, so they can know there’s support,” says Bangert, who’s able to bring the information she’s gathered back to Fraser Works, where job developers can mine the 1,200 clients the co-op registers every year to determine who might have the right combination of skills, experience and aptitude to offer an employer. »

Fraser. Even though Fraser Works has been offering its job-matching services to employers and job seekers for more than four years, it’s often flown under the radar of New West’s business community.

“It’s a matter of managing the relationships,” says Fraser. “We don’t want to send them someone who isn’t a right fit.” The program, which started in the fall of 2016, is just starting to find its legs after months of building awareness in the business community, says Bangert. “There’s a lot of interest. We do have employers that are reaching out.”

“It’s kind of a win-win for us,” says Fraser. “We get our name out there and we’re making sure businesses know we’re there when the need is there.”

Just over half of all businesses in British Columbia are run by self-employed people without paid help, according to statistics compiled in 2015 by Small Business B.C. Many businesses begin with one person pursuing their passion or their expertise, often from home. New Westminster is no exception. These sole proprietors run the gamut from aromatherapist to greeting card designer to video game producer.

ROYAL COLUMBIAN This year, construction crews settled in, fencing went up and cranes moved overhead. The work has truly begun to transform New Westminster’s largest employer and the health region’s top critical care centre. Redevelopment of Royal Columbian Hospital is underway, with a new fourstorey Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Centre highlighting phase one of a multi-year project. The new 75-bed mental health facility, scheduled to open by 2020, will provide a significant opportunity for state-of-the-art patient care, groundbreaking research and increased psychiatric training. Phase one, with a $258.9 million budget, also includes an energy centre, a multi-level underground parkade, associated tunnel and bridge connections to the existing hospital, a new heliport and an IT

communications hub. All of it sets the stage for the future of a hospital that already delivers critical care to a third of the province’s population. No other medical campus in the province provides this range of services at this high level of care – major trauma services, cardiac care, neurosciences, high-risk maternity and neonatal intensive care, all on one site. To help the hospital continue to care for some of the most seriously ill and injured patients in the province, Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation intends to work with donors to support redevelopment plans, every step of the way. Its assistance already goes back decades, when the Foundation and its donors purchased the land on which the new mental health centre is being built. Now, the Foundation

REDEVELOPMENT UNDERWAY is raising $9.1 million towards phase one and much more for the larger redevelopment plan. Subsequent proposed phases plan to add more beds, a larger emergency department, new operating rooms and interventional suites, a floor for moms and children and even more parking. Existing buildings will also be upgraded to support patient care. As BC’s longest serving hospital, first opening its doors in 1862, Royal Columbian is set to make healthcare history once again. Achieving our goals requires the participation of others who share the vision.

We hope you will join us in supporting the future of Royal Columbian. Visit www.rchfoundation.com, call 604.520.4438, or email info@rchfoundation.com for more information.

Pet Biz Purrs in New West

WORDS AND PHOTOS BY MARIO BARTEL

S

ince Karima Jivraj opened Bosley’s in Columbia Square six years ago, she’s seen her business increase almost 400 per cent. “I’m seeing pet owners wanting to do better for their animals,” says Jivraj. “Instead of just going to the grocery store and buying random food and litter, they want nutritional information, education, behavioural information.”

Indeed, there’s no shortage of opportunity for New Westminster’s pets to get a little pampering, from high-end kibble to a full spa treatment complete with a doggy version of a mani-pedi. Stefania Butkovic says she thought she was “a little bit nutty” to throw her lot into “a very, very saturated industry already” when she opened Mindful Mutts in Sapperton three years ago. What she found was a seemingly limitless demand for her doggy daycare and training services; Butkovic currently has close to 100 dogs on her client list. Butkovic says the city’s central location has a lot to do with the booming demand for pet services as owners are able to drop off and pick up their pooches on the way to and from work.

NEW WEST BUSINESS Karima Jivraj, of Bosley’s, says people are taking better care of their pets and businesses like hers have to be a resource to answer their questions.

“We’ve kind of become a bit of a hub,” says Butkovic. But attitudes towards the family pet are also changing, she says. They’ve become less of a possession and more a family member. And with that comes greater responsibility for the pet parents and the people entrusted with their care. “We have to do a bit more of what is considered a learning centre,” says Butkovic. “We encourage and educate our community on things like leash bylaws, we teach pet first aid, we have an in-house trainer.” Jivraj says New Westminster’s increasing urbanization is putting pet care to the forefront. “Animals make your life so much better,” says Jivraj. “They have a calming influence, they’re good for you.” As people chase career goals or settle into living in smaller spaces, they’re choosing pets over having kids, says Jivraj. “These pets are their kids. They want something extra in their lives.” Pets can also ease the isolation that often comes from the hectic pace of urban life. “Animals have a way of forcing you to

socialize,” says Jivraj. “For many people, that dog or cat is their social connection to others. It forces them to go out, get fresh air, interact with people.” Butkovic makes that interaction part of her mandate. She doesn’t just ensure her charges are properly fed and exercised, she advocates for them at community events and organizations. “Our number 1 priority is connecting with our clients,” says Butkovic. That can include staffing a table at the Royal City Farmers Market to talk about the city’s leash bylaws or offering kids workshops about petting dogs. Jivraj says pet parents turn to service providers as a resource. “They’re better educated,” she says. “They’re more focused on things like better nutrition and exercise for themselves, and that trickles down to their pets.” A trickle that’s turning into a tide. “Animals are living longer,” says Jivraj. “They’re healthier and they’re treated better.” Especially in New West.

NEWWESTCHAMBER.COM

Canadians are expected to spend $8.3 billion on their pets by next year. New Westminster entrepreneurs are taking a nice nibble from that market.

ew Westminster’s rich heritage goes beyond its historic downtown and stately homes in Queen’s Park. The city’s business community also enjoys a rich history. Some of its businesses have been operating for generations. They’ve endured the city’s economic ebbs and flows and ever-changing consumer tastes and expectations. Along the way they’ve learned valuable lessons that have allowed them to survive and thrive.

Those lessons are their legacy. The knowledge they’ve acquired is an invaluable resource for subsequent generations of entrepreneurs and independent proprietors that are the lifeblood of New Westminster’s economy. So we asked some of New Westminster’s most long-lived businesses to share some of the secrets of their longevity:

WORDS AND PHOTOS BY MARIO BARTEL

The community knows what you provide as a business, but how do you perceive your role in the community?

GORD HOBBIS THE ORIGINAL BIKE SHOP Our role in the community is to add value. A business brings employment, prosperity, economy and quality of life improvements to its community. I think we touch on all these facets. The Original Bike Shop contributes to building community by hosting and supporting bicycle rides and working on bicycle advocacy. We are conscious of the needs we serve. Whether it’s performance bicycles or baby strollers, we do our best to keep our customers rolling.

SUSAN CARTWRIGHT CARTWRIGHT JEWELERS We would like to think that we’re perceived as a really good corporate citizen; we participate on all levels from small community groups to large corporate initiatives. LEE GIESCHEN ROYAL PRINTERS Royal Printers is proud of our historical association with the City of New Westminster. As an organization we have grown with the community. We take pride in our role as community stewards in supporting economic and social growth. We believe and proudly promote New Westminster as a great place to live, work and play. »

SHARING KNOWLEDGE Susan Cartwright is charged with maintaining the high standards set by her grandfather and father since Cartwright Jewelers opened in 1933.

“ PA R T I C I PAT E ON ALL LEVELS FROM SMALL COMMUNITY GROUPS TO LARGE C O R P O R AT E I N I T I AT I V E S ”

As an advocate for business, we’re a supporter of select local not-for-profit organizations and a concerned/interested member in the community. What do you think has allowed you to stay in business for so long?

GORD HOBBIS Hard work. That involves being in the shop, being committed to what we do and thinking local. Being a small business in New Westminster means getting involved and supporting the community as well as being in tune with what the customers want, always treating people fairly and earning our customers’ trust. SUSAN CARTWRIGHT

SUSAN CARTWRIGHT CARTWRIGHT JEWELERS

We are so fortunate to have a great legacy in my grandfather and father. To this day we continue to uphold the high standards that were set by both men in our business dealing and community involvement.

LEE GIESCHEN The values that started Royal Printers in 1932 have anchored our business success for 85 years. Values like hard work, consistency, quality, innovation and, most importantly, making sure employees and customers are treated well every day. STAN WEISMILLER Our location adjacent to the river is very important for our aggregate supply. We receive our aggregates via barge, i.e. short sea shipping, versus having the materials transported by trucks. This method allows us to efficiently transport the aggregate materials to our depot with minimal impact on the environment and traffic. Our central location is also beneficial to our customers who want to purchase aggregates or hot mix asphalt. A second aspect of our ability to continue operating at a location that is just a few blocks from the Royal Columbian Hospital is our attention to detail in controlling emissions from our operations. »

RIVER MARKET There is a rise in female entrepreneurs both here in B.C. as well as across Canada. As a champion for local businesses, the popular quayside market boasts more than 50 per cent of its 26 merchants are headed by successful women. SHARING KNOWLEDGE Lee Geischen’s family started Royal Printers in 1932.

GORD HOBBIS Hiring people passionate about bicycles and being a family store have resulted in this not being an issue. When the goals change and someone is hired solely for how much they can sell or create is when things start to not work. It doesn’t take long in New West for the feedback to come on how we are doing. SUSAN CARTWRIGHT We always talk about the “Cartwright story,” where we started and how we have maintained our profile and great reputation. Leading by example and respecting our employees is number 1. LEE GIESCHEN Productive, happy, empowered employees are vital part to our business success. As such, we have always strived to support their training, development and career success. We promote community involvement and volunteering to

ensure that we support the communities that have always supported us. STAN WEISMILLER We support our staff and employees serving the customer, doing the right thing at the right time and taking the extra step to make sure the job is done correct the first time. How important do you think it is for there to be continuity in a community’s business environment?

GORD HOBBIS I think continuity, longevity, consistency are all words that express what people really value in the business they select to spend their money. Will their purchasing decision have a downstream effect on what happens in the community or is this a business that takes and doesn’t give. SUSAN CARTWRIGHT Continuity is always a good thing, but as we all know we live in an ever-changing world and city.

LEE GIESCHEN Business continuity is an integral part on any community eco-system. The only constant is change. Business, government and citizens must embrace change as an opportunity for improvement and growth. STAN WEISMILLER Businesses need to stake their claim in the community, let the residents know what they offer the community, support one another when issues arise and mentor each other along. A healthy and vibrant business community will assist all within the city in being that healthy and vibrant community that everyone wants. The Original Bike Shop, Cartwright Jewellers, Royal Printers and Winvan Paving are some of New Westminster’s oldest running businesses.

WORDS AND PHOTOS BY MARIO BARTEL

Hart can’t be certain whether their reluctance was based on her inexperience or her gender, but the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce has created a new networking group for the city’s female entrepreneurs to empower them and help level the playing field with their male counterparts in the business world.

Women of New West is “an inclusive community for women in business in New Westminster, providing a collaborative environment to build relationships, share ideas and support each other’s business endeavours,” says Lizz Kelly, the chamber’s CEO. It will accomplish that with events like learning breakfasts, business lunches, and networking evenings, as well as webinars and a mentorship program. The group also plans to support bursaries at New West Secondary School and Douglas College. Three of the group’s members recently convened at The Coffee Bar in downtown New

West for a kind of mini bear pit discussion on the unique challenges faced by female entrepreneurs and how they can overcome them by working together. Hart is the owner of MOVE New West, a yoga and dance fitness studio in the Brewery District. Jill Smith is an independent bookkeeper who recently started her own business, Saved By the Bookkeeper, after years in the corporate world. All your Insurance and Financial solutions in one place

hether it’s home, auto, and life insurance or even investments, understanding what product best meets your needs can be difficult and the choices can be overwhelming. You want security for the future, but you also need to balance your risk.

How do you decide what’s best for you? Stokholm Insurance can help.

“My focus is to help people see the value of insurance and understand what product will best serve their needs,” says Solvi Stokholm, a Co-operators Financial Advisor since 2009 and a 20-year veteran of the insurance industry. “When there’s a claim situation, people should know right away if they are insured. You never want to find yourself wondering if you’re covered!” The Co-operators has been helping Canadians with their insurance needs for more than 70 years. The company started in the Prairies helping farmers and today protects over one million Canadians. According to Solvi, it’s The Co-operators commitment to personalized service that has made them so successful—a commitment she shares. “I’m a real people person,” she says. “I take my time with my clients to make sure they walk out feeling good about whatever coverage they’ve chosen. I’m not the pushy type. I simply say, ‘Here are your options. What’s your budget?’ and we go from there.” While many people question the cost of insurance, Stokholm says the real value is knowing you’re covered.

NEWWESTCHAMBER.COM

“Taking care of the people you love is a good feeling,” says Solvi. “With the right insurance, you can protect what you’ve worked so hard for and safeguard your family’s future against any unforeseen events.”

30

Even if you already have insurance, Solvi suggests you review it at least once every two years to ensure your coverage still meets your needs.

WOMEN OF NEW WEST

On where women stand in the business community today

JH: I’m not sure if it was because I’m a woman, but I found I had no equity. I got a lot of “nos.” I don’t know if I was a guy if it would have been smoother. JS: I think we’re still trying to reach that equality thing. I don’t know if that’s ever going to go away. When I do face people who are male, they talk to me like I don’t know what I’m doing.

On the unique challenges faced by women in the business community

RC: I find in many meetings, when you walk in there’s this assumption that the meeting is going to be led by one of the males, when it’s really me, I’m the lead of this meeting. There’s subtleties in meetings that it always seems to be up to the female to offer the coffee; it’s very systemic, that that is assumed as part of your role. There’s still a lot of old-school thinking. JS: We’re all in the same place trying to become the equal. We all have to work, we all have to be mothers, we have to take care of the house, we have to do all these things. It’s on our shoulders to be the root of getting things done. How the female dynamic is changing the way business is conducted

RC: I think women are innately not as boastful about our abilities, because we’re actually busy doing it. We don’t have time to talk about how awesome we are. JS: Women register things differently from men. We have to talk about it. Men don’t worry about things as much.

RC: Women tend to follow up. We’re doers, we know how to multitask. We’re more loyal to fulfilling our commitment. How female entrepreneurs are changing the societal dynamic

JH: It’s kind of changing so much our place within the family. Men are raising children now, too, so if we do figure out a way to work with schedules that work better for families, that will benefit everybody, male or female. JS: It’s a time issue. That’s a factor for everyone, and now that two people in a family are working, it can help everyone. Everyone is in the same boat. RC: There’s a lot more respect and acknowledgement, but I think we still have to do it all to prove ourselves. Our brains are full with all kinds of stuff, and we’ve got to get men to start thinking about that stuff.

How bringing women together helps the business community in general

JS: It’s a way to start some improvements. Even if it’s just one idea, if it can help other people with managing their time, their house, their career, then it’s a success. It’s little pieces that can help us move forward. JH: We all know each other and we can bounce ideas off each other to learn the language. We can work together to overcome the perception that we don’t know what we’re doing. JS: There so may people starting businesses because there’s so much downsizing; people have to reinvent themselves, and that takes a lot of time to figure out. JH: It starts percolating ideas of how we can do stuff together. RC: We support each other and remind each other to have each other’s back. We can talk other women up.

JH: That might be the path to true work equality.

JH: It’s power in numbers.

JS: That might be like climbing a rope that’s not attached to anything…

JS: There’s all kinds of people in the community with so much to offer. It’s not just about your career, it’s about making it all work.

NEWWESTCHAMBER.COM

RC: When you go into a meeting, most people think of the women as having to prove themselves, but men come with a whole bunch of experience. I really think that’s still the case.
