PILATES MAT (14+ years, CCC)

Pilates is a system of exercises which, when practiced consistently, help to improve flexibility, strength, endurance, concentration, breathing and muscle control. Sign-up begins 30-minutes before class starts. Please bring your own yoga mat.

POWER YOGA (14+ years, CCC) Power Yoga uses the classic poses of hatha yoga to create a class that flows from start to finish. Emphasis on correct alignment helps participants to create a deeper understanding of the poses and ensures that they safely get the most physical benefit out of the practice. This class is ideal for increasing flexibility, balance, endurance and mental focus. 8

Experience a high energy, easy-to-follow cardio workout on the STEP. Afterwards, challenge your muscles and shape your body using a creative blend of dumbbell, resistance tubing and stability ball exercises. This classic workout is complete with a relaxing cool down and stretch.

GENERAL

ID TAGS

Simple, inexpensive, and easy to see, a tag on your pet’s collar is the most basic form of identification. You can purchase pet ID tags from most pet supply stores, and have them personalized with your pet’s name and your contact information. These work well for both cats and dogs. Always remember to attach your pet’s tags to their collar and make sure he/she wears it at all times. Of course, tags can fall off or may not be readable, and collars can slip or break. So we highly recommend a tattoo or microchip implant as a permanent backup, in addition to a collar and tags. In addition, the number on a City of New Westminster dog tag is tracked in a computer database. If your dog is found, we can check the tag number, and let you know that your pet has been found or impounded. All dogs in New Westminster must have a current dog license tag displayed on their collar.

MICROCHIP IMPLANTS

Microchip ID implants are about the size of a grain of rice, and contain a unique identification number. These implants are injected under the loose skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. It is quick and relatively painless. Animal shelters and veterinarians have special scanners that can read the microchip implant number. If we scan your pet and find a microchip number, we will contact the microchip registration database to obtain your contact information. Microchips are not detectable without a scanner, but you can attach a special tag to your pet’s collar that tells people your pet has a microchip. It is much easier, and less-invasive, to run a scanner over an animal than it is to peer into their ear for a tattoo.

KEEP INFO CURRENT! PET IDENTIFICATION - THE MORE, THE MERRIER!

Even if your pet is “always indoors” or is “never let offleash”, he/she still needs identification. Scared or excited pets can run away unexpectedly and pets without ID are often not reunited with their owners. There are a few different types of pet ID:

TATTOOS

Tattoos are a visible and permanent method of identification. A tattoo code is inked onto one of your pet’s ears (usually the right ear) while they are under anesthesia. The tattoo code represents the facility where the tattoo was done, the year it was done, and a number for the animal. When we can read a tattoo from a pet’s ear, we then phone the facility that did the tattoo and they check their records for owner information. Tattoos are visible to the naked eye, but sometimes they will fade over time and become illegible. If you notice that your pet’s tattoo is no longer legible, consider getting a microchip ID implant. Also, tattoo codes are province-specific, so if you have moved since having your pet tattooed, you will want an additional type of ID. 82

Using at least one of these types of pet ID will reduce the chance of your pet being truly lost. But they only work if you keep your contact information up to date. So if you move or change your phone number, you must advise the veterinary hospital or the microchip ID registration company. The only thing more heart-breaking than a stray pet with no ID is one with ID that leads to a dead-end. We can’t say it enough: update your contact information! And keep a record of all your pets’ tattoo, microchip, license and rabies tag numbers. If you have to file a lost pet report with the animal shelter, the more information you can provide, the better.

Seven convenient and safe off-leash dog enclosures are located at:

• Mercer & Duncan Streets • Carnarvon & Blackie Streets • Chilliwack & 10th Streets • Quayside Drive & Rialto Court • 7th Avenue & 22nd Street • Queen’s Park • Hume Park Visit www.newwestpcr.ca for details.

In New Westminster, cats that are allowed to be outdoors must be sterilized and identified. pcr@newwestcity.ca

New Westminster’s Illustrious Barber “George Mead begs to inform the public that he has built a first class hairdressing saloon.” Mead placed this announcement in the Mainland Guardian in 1878. George Mead, born in 1848 in England, moved in 1878 to New Westminster. He became prosperous enough to own a brick building adjacent to the Colonial Hotel on Columbia Street, by McKenzie Street, as seen in the 1893 photo below. In April 1896, he added two baths with running water to his shop. Mead offered baths to customers before this, but he would have had to make his own arrangements for obtaining the water. After the fire of 1898, his 635 Columbia Street building was replaced with the 1901 Holmes Block, later known as the Collister Block. Shortly after moving to New Westminster, he also purchased 12 acres of land and by 1892, the directory listed him as a fruit grower at the West End Fruit Farm (at that time outside the city, probably near today’s Connaught A studio portrait of George Heights). He was also listed as a tinner (presumably for canning fruit) and Mead (1848-1919), ca. 1905. as an agent for a brand of corn cob pipes. He eventually sold his land and (NWMA IHP0488) moved to the location later known as Mead’s Station on the BCER line. Mead had eight children. His daughter, Fanny Alberta Mortimer Mead, later known as Dollie DeGrey, was the 1886 May Queen, a Native Daughter of B.C. and named the New Westminster’s Woman of the Year in 1956. In July 1896, the twenty-year-old woman married Frances Smith de Grey, another hairdresser. George died on January 16, 1919 at Providence Hospital in Oakland and his body was returned to New Westminster four days later to be buried in the Fraser Cemetery. His memory lives on with Mead Street. We want to hear your stories about George Mead. If you have any information about him or other nineteenth century barbers, please contact Oana Capota, Curator at 604.515.3842 or ocapota@newwestcity.ca.
