GENERAL
Winter Wellness Tips for our Furry Companions BRING THEM INSIDE
KEEP THEM SAFE
If your pet loves being outdoors even in the cold, it is your legal responsibility to provide proper shelter for them. This means a well-insulated outdoor house with dry bedding and protection from the wind.
• We all know that we shouldn’t leave our pets in hot cars, but the same goes for cold cars, where pets can actually freeze to death.
To help protect your pet, limit their time outdoors. Like us, our pets don’t enjoy being cold or wet. When the temperatures dip, a pet is a risk of frostbite and of hypothermia, a life-threatening condition that can affect multiple internal organs.
BUNDLE UP
Sweaters and jackets are not only cute, but also help keep your pets protected during cold weather. Some types of dogs can withstand low temperatures, but dogs with short, single-coated hair, or very young, elderly, or small dogs can have trouble staying warm. Doggy jackets usually also have reflective features that improve visibility on dark nights.
BOREDOM BUSTERS
When it’s miserable outside and your pup’s walk has to be cut short, be sure to keep up with their mental and physical enrichment. Play games of fetch or hide-and-seek in the house, use food puzzles or toys so they have to work for their food, and brush up on their repertoire of tricks. Cats and bunnies can benefit from these activities, too! 82
• Use pet safe ice melt for your own driveway and sidewalk. Salt, ice melt, and ice itself can damage paw pads. Pets who lick their paws also run the risk of ingesting these chemicals. Wash and dry your pet’s paws after they’ve been outside.
• Give your vehicle hood a thump before starting your engine, just in case a cat or other critter is sleeping underneath. • Fortunately, winter storms are rare in New Westminster, but it always pays to be prepared. Keep an emergency pet survival kit stocked and nearby. Before you know it, we’ll be frolicking in the sun again!

“News” Westminster New Westminster has had at least 25 newspapers and serial publications since 1859. Some were short-lived. The satirical Mosquito lasted for about two months in spring 1885 (the City Archives has a copy). Others, like the North Pacific Times and the Telegraph, survive only as footnotes. A longer-lived newspaper, the Daily News, was first listed in the 1908 city directory on Front Street at Sixth. From 1909 until about 1914, it was at 63 McKenzie (near the law courts today). The WWI-era Pacific Canadian was on Carnarvon, also by the law courts. Even more long-lived was the Mainland Guardian (1870 1889). It was on Church Street for at least part of its history. Also on Church until around 1891 was the newspaper Post Office with the Columbian, after 1910 known as the Truth. In its September 15, 1889 edition, it had The Columbian newspaper office is the two-storey building on the left-hand side of the image. IHP1749 this to say about the rival Columbian: If TRUTH was conducted by ill-bred churls, it would designate the Columbian as “the Pig Alley concern,” or the “Hog Row outfit,” or the “newspaper that is not on a street,” or some other indefinite appellation. But TRUTH will, as it has in the past, call the Columbian, “the Columbian.” The Columbian is the most famous New Westminster newspaper. Its run spread over 122 years, from February 1861 to 1983, with pauses and variations on the name. Its first editor, John Robson, would go on to become premier. The paper started on Columbia near Lytton Square until 1869, when it moved to Victoria and eventually fizzled out. Back in New West, in October 1880, Robson bought the Dominion Pacific Herald, changing its name to the British Columbian in 1882. Columbian Office in the Powell Block (502 Columbia Street), ca. 1890. The decorations in this photo are for the Provincial Exhibition in Queen’s Park. The Kennedy brothers, James, George and Robert, were the publishers. IHP0627
The News, ca. 1910s The words on the window read: “The News Business Office.” This might be the Daily News’ office on McKenzie. IHP9860-047
By 1890, under new management, the Columbian moved into the Powell Block (approximately by today’s Army & Navy). When the city burned down in September 1898, it took another year for the paper to start up again in New West. It relocated to Sixth Street and Clarkson, where it remained for decades. In 1972, the Columbian moved operations to the Coquitlam side of North Road, leaving New West for the last time.
