Cop shoots suspect in ’Boro chase

New Westminster police were thrust into the spotlight Friday afternoon after a police-involved shooting at Queensborough Landing.

Around noon, local police were called to the ’Boro outlet mall for complaints of two “unwanted” men at one of the shops.When officers arrived, one of the suspects was taken into custody without issue, but there was an “interaction” with the other suspect and a chase ensued, and the suspect was shot, noted a statement from New West police.

It was the sound of a “pop” that first caught the attention of a truck driver parked in the far northeast corner of the parking lot near Walmart.

When the witness, who didn’t want his name used, turned to see where the sound came from, he saw a man running from the parking area directly in front of Walmart.

“I heard, ‘Stop, stop,’ and then he turned and fired at the cops,” the witness told the Record at the scene. “I looked right up at him, and I seen the first cop with his gun up in the air, and he pointed it at him and he fired and missed.”

NewWestminster is going all out for fun.

The city is focusing on festivals in a big way this year approving $272,000 in grants to an eclectic range of festivals.

One of the top attractions last year, the Northwest Fan Fest, is just one of the attractions getting some cash.

The three-day celebration of fandom and popular culture includes vendors and artists,

panels and workshops, entertainment and celebrities. It’s taking place in NewWestminster July 8 to 10 in and around Anvil Centre.

Greg Neher, show director, has been working with the city about expanding the event beyond the walls of Anvil Centre for this year’s event.

“We have some really big plans,” he told the Record.

“For NewWest’s perspective, it’s going to be a huge tourism draw,” Neher said. “From

our end we are hoping to capitalize on being right in the heart of downtown NewWest.”

Other festivals set to take place this year include a food truck festival, Hyack Festival Parade and street fair, Hyack Festival Show and Shine, NewWest Pride Festival, Sapperton Days, 12th Street Music Festival, celebrations on Canada Day and Uptown Live.

Uptown Live, which wasn’t held last year, is set to return to Uptown NewWestminster this summer.

What kind of housing would you like to see in your neighbourhood?

What characteristics of your neighbourhood are worth saving in the years ahead?

As the City of New Westminster works on an update to its official community plan, Mayor Jonathan Cote said it wants to hear what qualities currently exist in New West that need to be preserved – and what’s missing and needs to be addressed.

“One of the big topics that has come up quite significantly is housing choice.

In New Westminster, you either live in a condo or you live in a single-family home, and there is very few options in between,” he said.

“There’s been a strong appetite in the community saying we probably need a few more of those middle options, and if the city does

go ahead and try to find some areas for that, where are the best places to put those options.”

Cote said the city is considering a variety of landuse scenarios for New Westminster neighbourhoods but notes that not all areas of the city will necessarily have the same types of housing. Laneway housing, townhouses, duplexes, triplexes and row-houses are some of the housing forms being explored in the official community plan.

The Moody Park Residents’ Association has held two public meetings to help inform residents.

Christopher Bell, the residents’ association’s president, said some of the land-use scenarios being considered by the city could have major impacts on neighbourhoods in the future. He fears hundreds of lots across the city could become available for redevelopment through subdi-

visions or lot consolidation if some of the land-use scenarios being proposed are approved.

“You may have a far greater diversity of housing. Some people think that’s great. Others may be alarmed that the enclave of dozens and dozens of heritage homes may be at risk,” Bell said. “Unrecognizable? That’s a tough term. As a compact, historic neighbourhood over time, with higher land uses, that compact, historic neighbourhood could become slowly unrecognizable from its former self.”

Cote said the city has put forward three different scenarios for residents’ consideration in the OCP update.

While Scenario 1 is “the more cautious, slower kind of growth” scenario, he said Scenario 3 talks about putting in “a lot” more infill density.

generate the conversation,” he told the Record. “I fully anticipate there’s going to be many elements in Scenario 3 that we are probably not quite ready for in the community and it’s not the right time.To me, I didn’t think it was a value to the process to not put that out there. I think it’s an important conversation to have.”

Cote suspects the city will ultimately pick elements from the various scenarios when developing the plan.

“That is why we are really trying to get some finegrained responses from people to really get an idea of where their comfort levels are, where they see some of these changes enhancing neighbourhoods, but also where do they feel some of this infill density might actually take away from the character of the neighbourhoods,” he said.

“I would strongly encourage people to participate in the process,” Cote said.

A big light bill?

Lighting up Anvil Centre in pretty colours is feasible, but it may not be affordable.

Coun. Patrick Johnstone asked staff if it’s technically possible to light up the exterior of Anvil Centre with purple lights on Feb. 5 to recognize Provincial Eating Disorder Awareness Week.

“It is feasible. It’s expensive,” said chief administrative officer Lisa Spitale.

Spitale will get the costs related to the lighting and will proceed with the request if the cost is reasonable and bring it back to council if it’s a significant cost.

Johnstone suggested the city should develop poli-

cy guidelines about lighting of Anvil Centre as he suspects the city will be getting similar requests from other groups.

Mayor Jonathan Cote said Anvil Centre is a landmark in the community and one that lends itself to this type of feature.

“You are starting to see this more and more on some of the major landmarks for a variety of different reasons,” he said. “Last year we did light up the Anvil Centre for Pride (Week) in a rainbow. It was actually quite stunning.”

Cop shoots suspect Continued from page 1 The witness said the cop then chased the suspect around the back of the Walmart, past his truck, and through a couple of trees over to a path that runs behind the parking lot.

That’s when the witness alleges the officer shot the suspect.

There were a dozen or so orange pylons marking evidence, including what appeared to be a cellphone or electronic device, some books, shell casings and bullets.

The pylons led from the front of the Walmart around to the back, to a gravel path near the river, near a pile of clothing and possible medical items.

The suspect was taken to hospital. He and the other

suspect remain in custody, and police have confirmed a firearm was recovered at the scene.

“These are extremely high-stress situations, but we have a number of support networks for the officers involved, as well as for witnesses,” Acting Sgt. Jeff Scott said in a media release. “There is no risk to the public, as both the suspects are in custody.”

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO), will conduct its own investigation into the police-involved shooting to determine whether or not an offence was committed.

The IIO is asking for any witnesses to contact its info line at 1-855-446-8477.

Change: It happens in the best of cities There’s nothing worse than waking up in the morning and hearing the sound of unexpected jackhammers. Particularly if those jackhammers are breaking up the sidewalk next to your house in preparation for a 30-storey highrise.

This is the stuff of nightmares for folks who own homes on quiet streets in residential neighbourhoods lined with picket fences and rose bushes.

But it is not what happens in real life.

Cities create official community plans and those plans are based on studies, input and discussions. It is a process. Not an overnight process, and often not even something that happens in the span of a year.

Now, do all residents approve of everything in every plan? No, of course not.

And plans are not intended to please everybody.

Change is part of life, and

a city that does not reflect changing demographics and changing economic factors will find itself years later trying to play catch-up with expensive consequences.

One only has to look at the history of the city’s waterfront to understand what happens without a broad long-term plan. Going back and fixing things later is very difficult.

New Westminster is a city that wants to preserve its heritage, which is good, but

it also needs to build for the future.

The city has offered significantly different visions in its proposed scenarios for a new official community plan. And one of those visions is much higher densification in some neighbourhoods. It’s an effort to have more diverse neighbourhoods.

Will this vision be the template for the city moving forward in the immediate future?

Probably not.The stark reality of city politics is that residents with pull, or an understanding of how to influence the system, usually get their way.

Poor folks who would like to have a park in their neighbourhood have to hope that a city planner and city leaders believe in a balanced city for all residents, not just the whiners and wealthy.

That’s why there’s always more green space where the

rich folk live.

What this city will look like in 10 years or 50 years will depend on a lot of things: economic forces, skilled planners and wise leaders.

But it should not be determined by people who want isolated neighbourhoods to remain frozen in time.

Any surprises in the budget?

The B.C. Liberal government’s annual budget usually contains little drama, as the bulk of it is made public as part of the three-year fiscal plan that accompanies the budget presentation every year.

But this coming year may be slightly different. Premier Christy Clark has dropped hints that a few nuggets that are not currently in the fiscal plan may be added when her finance minister brings down the budget on Feb. 16.Those nuggets (whether they qualify as “goodies” remains to be seen) will deal with home buying, Medical Service Plan premiums, and funding for the children and families ministry.

I wrote in this space a couple of weeks back that the time had to come to revisit how those MSP premiums are paid, as they have evolved into a financially onerous “flat tax” for far too many families.

It’s unclear whether they will be tied to income levels (as I and others have suggested), but Clark has pledged to make them fairer and more affordable.

They won’t be eliminated, of course (the premiums are forecast to bring in more than $2.5 billion next fiscal year), but hopefully the playing field is made level.

Clark has also hinted about helping first-time home buyers, who are facing enormous obstacles (as in: insanely high housing prices) in Metro Vancouver when it comes to making any purchase. But the pre-

mier and her finance minister have also rightly expressed concern over taking any action that leads to an unintentional consequence: harming the existing financial equity thousands of people have built up in their homes.

This is going to be a trickier sea to navigate than restructuring MSP premiums.

Taking even a small step when it comes to regulating a red-hot market like Metro Vancouver’s housing market can have all kinds of repercussions.

The third “nugget” may be a higher-than-expected budget increase for the children and families ministry.

As it is, MCFD is due a paltry $6 million funding hike (on a $1.38-billion budget) in the coming year.

However, Bob Plecas, a former deputy minister in MCFD, was brought in to review some ministry operations, and he has recommended a more significant funding increase of more than $50 million.

There is ample evidence that child protection workers (among the most valued of all civil servants) are underpaid and overworked.

And there is a critical need for more foster parents.

Will the kind of funding increase required to address these problems be granted by the usually tight-fisted Finance Minister Mike de Jong?

We shall see.

City drives forward with food truck policy

Dear Editor I recently had bloodwork done at a lab. While awaiting a long 1.5 hours patiently, I bought doughnuts and coffee for these hard workers. I was shocked at how people swarmed around these lab techs everytime they called our numbers. Not just a NIMBY about train troubles Dear Editor Re: Letter writer says activists should be up in arms about coal, Trending, New Westminster Record, Jan. 14.

Fortunately, Mr. Lundy does not know everything; my girlfriend inherited this house on River Drive. The trains were not here first.

Second, trains were never this bad, as you state about being a NIMBY. New Westminster had very few problems until the Washington group from the U.S.A. took over Southern Rail. It’s amazing the crap they get away with – noise and smoke. If this was your car it would be in the scrap yard.

And, for your information, loaded coal cars have travelled passed our house. There will also be coal dust blown across the river from Fraser Surrey docks into New Westminster.

Your further comments are welcome, if you do not miss the point.

Many restaurants cater to the evening/night crowd, so if the food trucks are monitored for ‘place and times’, (and many are excellent), then I think it’s a great idea, especially for the unique foods they prepare. Dogs now get gov’t credentials

If your dog can’t resist the delicious scent of food in a restaurant or the attention of strangers in a mall, he’s probably not cut out to be an assistance dog.

Such temptations are the stuff of a new assessment now being administered by the Justice Institute of B.C. in New Westminster as part of new legislation governing B.C.’s guide and service dogs.

Under the Guide and Service Dog Act, which came into effect Monday, certified dogs and handlers are now being issued government identification cards based on new training standards.

Canine helpers not trained by an accredited guide- or service-dog organization – such as the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) in Burnaby or B.C. and Alberta Guide Dogs in Delta – now have to be tested by the Justice Institute to make sure they know how to behave in public.

“It’s a public safety test,” JIBC security training programs manager Karen Johnson told the Record. “It’s not to determine whether the dog is proficient at what they’re supposed to be assisting the individual with.”

B.C. and Alberta Guide Dogs CEO Bill Thornton said the new legislation will weed out dogs and handlers without proper training and help his clients and trainers operate more effectively.

“Now people will know it’s a legitimate team, and it’s that card issued by the government, so it’s a huge

strengthening to what we had,”Thornton said at a media event ushering in the new laws at JIBC last Friday.

PADS apprentice trainer Rob Mackay agreed.

“We expect a huge amount of obedience from our dogs,” he said, “and some schools that are not certified might not have that same standard, and we want everybody to understand that our dogs are always going to be at their best when in public.”

The B.C. Guide Dog and Service Dog Assessment, developed with input from the Justice Institute, aims to ensure guide dogs or service dogs are unobtrusive in public places and demonstrate appropriate public behaviour.

Canines have to pass all 40 of the exercises set out in the assessment to pass.

No dogs have yet been assessed, according to Johnson, but JIBC has contractors on standby to administer the test.

Besides new standards for assistance dogs, the Guide and Service Dog Act also includes stiffer penalties for people who deny assistance dogs and their handlers access to public spaces or tenancy in strata properties.

“People that have difficulty getting around, this is going to enhance their capability significantly,” said Public Safety Minister Mike Morris, who was also at the Justice Institute Friday. “It’s going to go a long way towards making B.C. one of the most accessible provinces in Canada.”

Front Street will soon be closed to vehicles while the city takes down part of the Front Street parkade and starts implementing its waterfront vision, but that doesn’t mean it’s out of bounds for shoppers.

Starting Feb. 1, Front Street will be off-limits to vehicles while the western part of the parkade is deconstructed and a mews is created on a stretch of the frontage road.

“There will still be access down to the local road, and definitely pedestrian access so people will be able to access the businesses there,” said Mayor Jonathan Cote.

“The city has been working on putting up signage on Columbia Street letting people know.We are doing everything we can to make sure the public is aware that Front Street is still going to be open for business as a commercial street.”

Although Front Street will be closed to vehicles from Feb. 1 to July 2016, pedestrian and vehicle access will be allowed along the frontage road, with intermittent road closures between Begbie and Sixth streets.The frontage road is the roadway in front of Front Street storefronts.

“We do anticipate it is going to be a tough period of time for the businesses down there. In the end of the day, when the project is complete and the mews is complete, we think it’s going to be a far better retail environment down there,” Cote said. “I think there’s going

to be some short-term pain for the businesses on Front Street, but in the end I think there’s going to be some long-term gain and some big opportunities for that street moving forward once this is complete.”

During the closure, commercial vehicles are being re-routed to other regional truck routes where possible.

Police will be enforcing the changes to the truck routes.

Lisa Leblanc, the city’s manager of transportation, said the B.C.Trucking Association is aware of the road closures and the potential impacts, as well as the traffic management plan developed to divert truck traffic off of Front Street.

“We are anticipating that some trucks will choose alternate routes because it will be more difficult to get through the city, but we are not directing them to do so,” she said. “It’s recommended in the traffic management plan there’s alternative routes set up, but ultimately it will be their choice.”

Back in 1999, Front Street was closed to traffic for road construction and trucks were detoured to Columbia Street and Royal Avenue. Staff reports from that time state that Front Street merchants noticed a “dramatic decrease” in sales immediately after the road closure, as the traffic news reports stated the road was closed and didn’t mention that local access was available via Sixth Street.

The proposed twinning of the Trans Mountain Pipeline could put decades of work to restore the Brunette River at risk.

That was one of the arguments made by a delegation of city representatives who appeared before the National Energy Board, which was holding final arguments for intervenors in Burnaby on Tuesday. Kinder Morgan is seeking to twin the Trans Mountain pipeline that runs oil from Alberta to the B.C. coast, which would increase shipping volume from 300,000 barrels of oil per day to 890,000.

Mark Allison, manager of strategic issues and sustainability , said the City of New Westminster has “significant concerns” about the proposed twinning of the Trans Mountain Pipeline, including its effect on the environment, the potential impact on landowners and the ability of first responders to deal with incidents around the pipeline.

Fire Chief Tim Armstrong said emergency responders have a “critical need” to develop success-

ful emergency response plans so they can respond to emergencies, but Kinder Morgan only released a heavily redacted version of its response plan “The emergency response plan provided is more like an emergency remediation plan,” he said “It is after the fact.”

Longtime New Westminster resident Elmer Rudolph gave the board a condensed history lesson on the Brunette River, noting there had been an abundance of fish in the river in the early 1900s, but industry later “crippled” the salmon run and no salmon were found in 1955. Once a “dead river,” the Sapperton Fish and Game Club nurtured the waterway and coho returned to the river by the mid-1980s.

“We are very protective of it,” he said. “We don’t want to lose it again.”

Rudolph said an oil spill from the pipeline could be “catastrophic” for the Brunette River, and organizations have not been satisfied with the company’s response to that possibility.

The concert will include those familiar songs alongside songs from the new album, which introduces such tunes as Ottie the Otter,The Moose on the Loose and Put the Beat inYour Feet.

“These new catchy tunes celebrate our wonderful earth and all of its amazing creatures,” a press release says.

The Diamonds will be joined onstage by the Hug Bug Band: musicians David Jonsson, Linnea Good and Lee Oliphant.

Diamond, who now lives in Richmond, is a former French and music teacher at New Westminster Secondary School.

She now has 14 recordings and a string of awards to her credit, and she tours regularly throughout Canada and the U.S.A. A New Westminster artist is featured in the next exhibition at the Gallery at Queen’s Park.

The Arts Council of New Westminster is presenting Happenstance, a solo exhibition by Robert Fee, from Feb. 3 to 28.

Fee is an artist and musician, originally from the Okanagan, who now lives in New West.

A press release notes

that after he completed an art degree, he spent five years playing jazz and blues in clubs all over B.C. He moved to Vancouver in the late 1990s, first studying jazz at Capilano College and then completing a bachelor’s degree in art education.

“Robert Fee approaches painting in a similar way to jazz improvisation,” the release says. “The idea of creating a solo, starting from basic structures and developing them in new and unexpected ways, could also describe how he works with

paint.”

An opening reception is set for Wednesday, Feb. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m.

As a complement to the artwork, Fee will also present a Sunday afternoon series of jazz duo concerts, at 2 p.m. on Feb. 7, 14 and 21.

Get arty with kids at workshop River Market hosts a printmaking workshop for all ages on Jan. 31 Do you have an artistically inclined youngster in the house?

ArtStarts, a non-profit group that promotes arts and creativity for kids in B.C., is returning to River Market for its weekend workshop series on Sunday, Jan. 31.

This month, families can enjoy a printmaking workshop by Julie McIntyre called New Impressions: Making the Common, Exceptional.The workshop is designed to help families use basic equipment and ordinary materials around their homes to create pro-

fessional prints.

There are two 45-minute sessions, at 11 a.m. and at 1 p.m. It’s aimed at ages five and up, but everyone is welcome.The workshop is free, but if you’re interested, it’s wise to be there early – it’s a popular program.

The Alley Theatre production of Hannah Moscovitch’s play stars the husband-and-wife team of Daniel Arnold and Marisa Smith.

They appear as the brother and sister duo of Claire and Aaron – the play takes place when four-year-old Claire is adopted into the family, and six-year-old Aar-

on has to learn to “love” his new monster of a sister. It’s told through the now adult voices of the two main characters.

It’s directed by Amiel Gladstone, with lighting design by Adrian Muir and sound design by Brian Linds.

Two artists – and Anvil Centre – are featured on the cover of a European magazine.

Sarah Joyce, a director and curator at the New Media Gallery in Anvil Centre, says photographer Kathy Datsky and dancer Jadie Hill have been known to explore New Westminster in search of locations in which to set a dance shoot. Last summer, they visited the gallery’s POPart exhibition and took photos with German artist Karina SmiglaBobinski’s interactive art installation, ADA. Joyce was thrilled to learn the women’s project made it onto the cover of Tanz magazine, as it’s considered Europe’s biggest and most-respected ballet and dance magazine. She said it’s a big achievement and hopes it inspires the duo to continue on with their creative projects.

And why are there statues of this humble Scottish poet in dozens of cities throughout the world, including our own Stanley Park and in Red Square in Moscow?” asks Benson. “Because the world shares Robert Burns’ hope for a better world.”

Burns, born in 1759,

wrote about freedom and dignity for the common man and human frailties like drunkenness, failure, lust and love, Benson says.

Along with being a poet, Benson notes that Burns also composed music for many of his poems and wrote the lyrics to many traditional Scottish folk tunes.

Mayor Jonathan Cote said the festivals are positive events in the community, providing entertainment for the residents, promoting the city and benefiting local businesses.

“Half the costs we are looking at are actually costs to close down the streets,” he noted. “To me, I think if an organization can demonstrate they can put on a very successful festival, putting thousands of people into the community to an event, to me I think that’s worthy of support.”

The last Camaro was all about “retro,” so what’s next for Chevy’s pony car?

It’s likely that the Camaro wouldn’t exist today if it wasn’t for continuing interest and support from the Baby Boomer generation and, now more commonly, their offspring.

Both are steeped in the warm glow of nostalgia and yearning for a time when General Motors, Ford, Chrysler and American Motors’ sporty machinery blazed a trail across the nation’s streets and racetracks. More than five decades on, that trail has yet to cool off.

With the recently redesigned Ford Mustang and significantly updated Dodge Challenger (including the mind-blowing 707-horsepower Hellcat version), what more could fans of past-generation American muscle wish for? Well, that would be an all-new sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro to keep pace with the competition.

The 2016 model sticks with the same general look as the previous car, including a beltline as high as Steve Urkel’s pants. Seriously, it’s as if some oldschool hot-rodder chopped a bit out of the Camaro’s roofline to make it appear more sinister. The design works, but combined with a cocoon-like seating position; your head will sit parallel with your elbows when hanging them out over the car’s towering door tops.

That’s hardly reason to take a pass on this newest Camaro. On the plus side, a thoroughly modernized interior does away with the annoying tunnel-type gauge pods that weren’t all that popular when first installed in the original car nearly a half-century ago. The new dash is user-friendlier, with a large screen displaying vital info between the tachometer

and speedometer. Another optional touch-screen on the control panel is used for the navigation, communications and the audio system.

The Camaro has switched over to a stiffer platform one that it shares with the Cadillac ATS - which means that it’s slightly shorter and narrower than before. The weight has also been leaned out by about 175 kilograms. That amount relates to the base LT coupe equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that makes 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The weight for a comparable Camaro Convertible has undergone a 90-kilogram reduction.

Of course the Camaro becomes heavier with the installation of either the 3.6-litre V6 (335 horsepower/284 pound-feet) or the Corvette-based 6.2-litre V8 (455/455) that’s exclusive to the SS model.

Interestingly, although the turbo four-cylinder is the least expensive engine and the non-turbo V6 is optional, for Mustang buyers the choice is the other way around.

All three Camaro powerplants are available with sixspeed manual transmissions or available eight-speed automatics that can be ordered with paddle-shift controls. The V8’s Tremec-brand manual gearbox gets a rev-matching program that blips the throttle when downshifting. Matching the engine speed to the transmission keeps the rear of the car staple during deceleration, preventing unintentional lockup.

Regardless of which model is selected, you’ll still have an engagingly rapid car on your hands; the slowest being the base turbo with the automatic transmission that Chevrolet claims can reach 60 mph (96 km-h) from rest in 5.5 seconds.

The V6 is slightly quicker, while the V8-powered Camaro SS does it in 4.0.

With a starting price of $30,000 for the turbo four-cylinder coupe, including destination charges (pricing for the late-arriving convertible has yet to be announced), base Camaros have the usual necessities and niceties plus push-button start, 20inch wheels and a rear-vision camera (an absolute necessity when reversing).

At the upper end of the scale, a fully loaded Camaro SS will cost about $44,000, but you’ll get what is essentially a more practical, albeit less alluring, version of a Corvette.

There’s no official word as to whether or when the higher performing ZL1 or Z/28 models will arrive, but given the return of the racy Mustang GT350 with its 526 horsepower V8, the wait shouldn’t be too long.

Meanwhile, with enhanced content and power choices, you can more easily match the Camaro to your specific driving needs and your ability to pay for them.

Local community members, folks living in the Downtown Eastside and Syrian refugees are all experiencing the generosity of Greens and Beans Deli and its customers.

Last December, the Sapperton restaurant held a sock drive. By Christmas, customers had brought in 200 pairs of socks and 150 pairs of gloves and donated $200.

“I called Gurp (Johal), the owner of the Sapperton Shoppers Drug Mart to see what I could get for the money,” said deli owner Leona Green. “We got 150 toothpastes, 150 Kleenex and 150 bags of Christmas candy.”

Green also talked to one of her customers about the possibility of donating vegetables for the Christmas Day dinner at St. Barnabas Church. Russ Lemp, the owner of New Westminsterbased company Harvest Marketing B.C., was glad to help.

Thanks to my customers, we made a lot of people happy this past Christmas.

“He sent 10 cases. I bought 100 pounds of potatoes to go with it, and vegetables were covered for the dinner,” Green said in an email to the Record.

“All the things we collected were made into gift bags for the people at the Christmas dinner.We also collected warm coats and jackets. I traded them for a large box of toys with the Camp Kerry Society.”

Folks from the Camp Kerry Society took the coats down to the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver on Christmas Eve and handed them out to people in need.

“They had a lot of extra toys, so I gave them to St. Barnabas to give the children that attended the

Christmas dinner,” Green reports. “There were a lot of toys left over so they are saving them for Syrian refugees.”

Green also baked up a few batches of cookies, taking about 300 to St. Barnabas for dessert for the Christmas dinner and sending 200 down to the Downtown Eastside with the coatdelivery crew.

“Thanks to my customers we made a lot of people happy this past Christmas,” she said. “It does take a village!”

FITNESS GARAGE LAUNCHES NEW PROGRAM FOR PARKINSON’S ZHOOSH Fitness Garage is getting set to launch a new exercise program for people with Parkinson’s disease.

Robyn Murrell, owner, participated in an intense workshop and is one of the first registered personal trainers in B.C. who are certified to teach this specialized exercise program. Exercise plays a role in maintaining muscle strength, balance, flexibility, and the ability to walk safely and carry out daily living activities for people who have this neuro-degenerative disorder.

“I am excited to offer this program for people living with Parkinson’s,” Murrell said in a press release. “After an initial required assessment, clients will learn how to target four major foundational movements to counteract the primary deficits shown by research to interfere with everyday mobility.”

Part of the PWR@ Moves program involves connecting with the client’s doctors, physiotherapists and other health-care professionals in order to offer a program specific to each client, she said.

A one-hour assessment appointment is required before starting the program.

Regular monthly sessions will begin on Feb. 1 and will be held twice a week (Mondays and Thursdays) from 11 a.m. to noon.

Previously, Murrell served as the New Westminster leader of a new 12-week walking program created by the Parkinson Society British Columbia and raised funds for the society.

Most members of New Westminster city council like the idea of bringing food trucks to the city – as long as it doesn’t take a bite out of local business.

Staff has been developing a policy about food trucks, which could allow the mobile restaurants to set up in designated areas of the city.

Some councillors want assurances the food trucks won’t negatively impact existing businesses.

“I have trouble with bringing in a bylaw like this in New Westminster,” said Coun. Chuck Puchmayr.

“We are not Vancouver.

There is a huge difference.

There’s not a proliferation of businesses with foot traffic.We have limited foot traffic.”

Puchmayr expressed concern that a lot of restaurants in New Westminster are struggling, including mom and pop operations.

Coun. Mary Trentadue, who formerly operated small businesses, believes that having similar businesses in an area can draw more people to that neighbourhood.

“We need more people frequenting our restaurants,

we need more people out on the streets walking and checking out retail and restaurants,” she said. “I think if we are able to provide more, we will get more traffic.”

City staff have deemed the Front Street parkade to be an unlikely location for food truck due to weight restrictions on the structure.

They also recommended against having food trucks at Westminster Pier Park.

Trentadue thinks it would be a “missed opportunity” if the city didn’t allow food trucks at Pier Park.

“If we want that walkway to be vibrant and full of people, having other things for people to do there is a no brainer,” she said.

Coun. Patrick Johnstone said there is limited foot traffic in some of the city’s commercial areas, which is why this concept is being proposed. He believes there’s still time to fine-tune the policy and address the concerns of local businesses.

Johnstone expressed surprise that the Front Street parkade may be off-limits because of weight restrictions. He thinks the top deck of the parkade, near the Fourth Street overpass access into Westminster Pier Park, would be the “opti-

Having received feedback from council, staff will proceed with more public consultation. Staff will also reexamine the possibility of allowing food trucks on the parkade and at Westminster Pier Park.

Seniors Services Society is hoping the change in federal government will mean more money is available to help seniors at risk of homelessness.

The New Westminster group helps seniors all over the Lower Mainland who are either first-time homeless or at risk of losing their housing.

“We’re hopeful with the changes in Ottawa there will be changes to funding for housing,” said Brian Dodd, from Seniors Services Society.

The previous federal government dedicated the lion’s share (65 per cent) of funding for homelessness initiatives to Housing First, a stream dedicated to helping the chronically homeless.

That meant money went towards helping people who

were either on the street for at least six months or three times, for more than a month at a time, in the past year.

That meant less funding for seniors who were facing homelessness for the first time. As a result, Dodd’s organization lost funding that covers outreach work and has had to turn away one in every three seniors.

“We’re hoping there will be changes to the system when our contract ends in September, so we can once again put more (outreach) bodies on the street,” Dodd said.

In the meantime, Seniors Services Society is working with other organizations whose clients don’t fit the street-entrenched profile of homelessness.

The New Westminster Public Library has always been a strong supporter of arts and culture in New Westminster, not only through our collections but also through library programming and accessible space for art exhibits.

We are pleased to announce enhancements to the selections process for the art shows at the library, to ensure we continue to showcase the diverse artistic talents of New Westminster and beyond.

Is your work current and original? Do you work in two-dimensional media, such as paintings, drawings and/or photographs? If so, we want to see your work!

Starting Feb. 1, the library will begin accepting applications for one-month showings that will run from April through to December 2016.Via email, artists will be asked to submit samples

of their work along with an artist statement and other details. Please note that the library will only accept digital submissions. More information about the submissions process will be available on our website on Feb. 1.

We hope it generates plenty of interest and brings more great art to our public space

The call for submissions will run from Feb. 1 to 29, and shows will be chosen by our newly formed community art selection committee.

The committee has been assembled to make sure that both the community and library are represented in the

selections process.

Comprised of three community members, a library trustee, and a library staff member, the committee will evaluate all of the submissions received and choose artists based on our newly established criteria for selection.

Once the committee has deliberated, the chosen artists will be notified by midMarch and announced officially soon after.

This is a new adventure for New Westminster Public Library, and we hope it generates plenty of interest and brings more great art to our public space!

This is certainly an interesting, if somewhat eclectic, list. minster we have been asked about flavours of various items such as tea, coffee, candies, liquors and, yes, sodas and, if they had syrups and (flavour) essences.Well, this simple ad in 1885 gives us an excellent idea of what we might taste in a drink or other food items that used such flavouring. Anyone for a sarsaparilla?

The second advertisement is quite curious and was, according to the ad’s copy, posted by “the handiest man in British Columbia.” Orders could be

dropped off at Prothero’s Furniture Store on Columbia Street, and the job would be carried out at moderate charges.Work and materials were all guaranteed to be “The Pure Stuff,” and there might be a bit more humour attached to this advert, as it notes you can check out some “unexceptional references.”

And what was it that was offered by this handyman in a practical “workmanlike manner” under the overall heading of “Read and Reflect”? Well there are 11 jobs listed, starting with “a decent job of painting, a sign written, any fence advertising, a light of glass set in, a light of glass frosted and striped, or a window show card prepared.”

The list of jobs is preceded by “If you want” and continues with “a carpet cleaned or laid, your furniture varnished, any writing done in a good legible hand, a brick building or roof tarred, and any china, crockery or glassware packed.”This is certainly an interesting, if somewhat eclectic, list.

Advertisements from the past in New Westminster often add more than just colour and background to the town’s story. Here are a couple that offer a bit more than we usually find in the pages of an early local paper, in this case from the Mainland Guardian of 1885.

The first ad was for the New Westminster Soda Works, which was located at that time opposite Lytton Square, which in today’s terms, was near the foot of Church Street across Columbia Street.

We learn that the company is owned and operated

by Huson and Wilcox, that these two gentlemen had “purchased the plant, goodwill and fixtures in the establishment lately carried on by Messrs. A. Philips and Son” and that they were ready to supply all soda-related needs.

The reason that this advert is important aside from just promoting a product, is that it gives us a very good idea of the extent of their goods.They note that they can supply a first class product and “all the various

preparations in their line.”

And what is that “line”?

Their featured products are “soda water, ginger ale, essences, and syrups.”This little bit of information tells us a great deal.

It didn’t start the way they had planned, but two Royal City Curling Club rinks are looking for a fresh start on Thursday at Scotties B.C.Women’s curling championships in Coquitlam.

The Amy Gibson rink and Diane Gushulak rink are part of the eight-team championship,

hosted by the Coquitlam Curling Club.

Both teams dropped their first two games, including opening rounds on Tuesday.

On opening day, Gibson fell 9-7 to Victoria’s Wark team in extra ends, after rallying from a rough start.Wark built up a 5-0 lead over the first three ends, and nurtured a 7-2 advantage entering the seventh frame.

That’s where the Gibson crew — which includes skip Lindsay Hudyma, third Rebecca Turley, second Michelle Dunn and Gibson at lead — launched an impressive comeback that saw them tie it in the top of the 10th.Wark scored two in the bottom of the 11th to take the win.

Wednesday morning saw Gibson grab an early 3-1 edge before Nanaimo’s Kesa Van Osch

turned the tables en route to a 7-5 decision.

The Gushulak team — featuring third Grace McInnes, second Jessie Sanderson, lead Sandra Comadina and skip Gushulak — were tied with two-time Canadian champion Kelly Scott midway through the seventh when the Kelowna rink put up three and held on for a 6-3 decision.

New Westminster Hyacks senior boys basketball coach Ted Cusick hopes his team gets to experience a ‘day on the beach’ soon.

The Quad-A squad hasn’t seen a lot of rewards for the sweat collateral invested yet, but small positive signs are starting to show, he noted.

“We’re starting to get better as a team and working together and they are starting to buy into my system,” said Cusick.

Besides a 1-1 record in Burnaby-New West league, the club has dived into a heavy schedule, returning from the Island last week with a split.

New West topped Duncan Christian 7362, a day after Cowichan blasted them 82-48.

In the win, Francis Fereripe tallied 27 points and Norman Manacsa added 25, while Trew Dancey counted six points and 10 rebounds.

In the loss, Manacsa scored 15 points. “(Cowichan) are a very big team, it seemed like all of their players were 6-foot-6 but they weren’t,” said Cusick. “We are very small so those match-ups give us a lot of trouble.”

The following day, a tired crew got off to a slow start against the smallish Duncan Christian team and fell behind by 12 before charging back to earn the win.

Just prior to the trip, the Hyacks bested Burnaby Mountain 89-62 in a league tilt, sparked by Manacsa’s 31-point performance, 22 from Federipe and 10 by Jiggy Susi.

It’s been a season of more downs than ups so far, Cusick admitted, with multiple injuries and a couple of kids quitting stalling much of the progress. But through it all, he sees a core group of players who are working diligently to force the issue when the Lower Mainland playoffs begin next month.

“Part of the problem was that early in the year it seemed like we were getting thumped all the time,” said Cusick, who returned to coaching New West after a two-year sabbatical. “It’s taken us a while to figure out what it takes to battle back.”

At the recent MEI tournament, the squad posted a 1-2 record – opening with a polished 105-73 victory over Burnaby Central, a key rival in league play. Manacsa led the way with 31 points, including seven treys, while Continued on page 32

A lot of positives emerged from the New Westminster senior girls basketball team’s journey at the Centennial Top10 tournament last week.

Althought they finished 1-3, New West put up strong efforts against four ranked Triple-A teams, and didn’t break.

Finishing 12th overall in a field of 16 — mostly provincially ranked — does a team’s confidence good.

“It was very good for us,” remarked Hyacks head coach Doug Woodward. “Over the four games we played pretty well, and even in the one game where the score wasn’t close, we were leading.”

New West launched the tourney with a deceiving 74-40 loss to No. 5-rated Riverside, where

the unranked Hyacks briefly led 18-11 and by three after one quarter.

Riverside started the second quarter with 13 straight points to take control of that contest, but the underdogs got a solid 16-point performance from senior Madisen Obrovac.

In their next match, the Hyacks edged Handsworth 5953 in another game where the score told only part of the story.

New West built up a solid lead over three quarters only to see Handsworth make a game of it, getting within two before the Royal City crew ended it with a couple of buckets.

It was a game where stellar sub Sara Forgie got into the starting rotation, due to an injury suffered by Justice Steer in the first game. Forgie, a 5-foot8 Grade 10 guard, responded with 29 points against Hand-

sworth, in a win that also gives New West an advantage at the Vancouver Districts playoffs over their North Shore rival.

“That was our biggest game...

We played them extremely well but really could have finished it a bit better,” noted Woodward.

In the team’s final two contests, the scores were very similar as No. 8-ranked W.J. Mouat won 65-59, and No. 9 Claremont prevailed 65-58.

“We had the lead in the third quarter in both games,” the coach said. “We have to put it away.We could have won both but didn’t, and we talked about it at practice (Tuesday).

“You can’t miss those fourfoot shots.We also have to do a better job on defensive rebounds, because if you give them two, three chances they’re going to put them in.”

The focus for the squad now turns to St.Thomas More’s Senior Girls Chancellor tournament, which begins today when the host team takes on Abbotsford at 1:30 p.m., Byrne Creek plays McMath at 3 p.m., and New West goes at 5 p.m. against Top-10 finalist and Double-A ranked Seycove.

That match-up will be a terrific measuring stick as the Hyacks look to refine their game with playoffs a month away.

“They are a good team with two awesome post players,” said Woodward. “They scored 62 points against us and we need to defend the posts better...We didn’t know what to expect the first time we faced them.We have a plan for them this time.”
