Green leader confident about taking New West AndrewWeaver says ‘it’s not a strong NDP town’ – while NDP incumbent Judy Darcy stays on track with her message By Theresa McManus
tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
New Westminster isn’t as NDP as many people think. B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver was in town last weekend door knock-
ing with New West candidate Jonina Campbell, and he predicts she’ll beat incumbent NDP MLA Judy Darcy when voters go to the polls in May. “Without any doubt,” he said when asked if Camp-
bell would win. “You have one of the worst voter turnouts in the province at around 50 per cent. One in two voters stay home, they don’t bother to vote because they don’t see their vote mattering. They give
up because they think this is a strong NDP town. What it is – it’s not a strong NDP town – it’s a strong disenfranchised voter town.” In all but one provincial election since 1952, New Westminster voters have
elected an NDP (or its CCF predecessor) Member of the Legislative Assembly. Weaver told the Record that Darcy got 48 per cent of the vote in 2013, compared to the Liberal’s 33 per cent and the Green’s eight
per cent. “You had 58 per cent voter turnout. When I ran in Oak Bay-Gordon Head, the voter turnout was 70 per cent. It was the highest in the province. We brought Continued on page 10

‘Did you see that? That’s two gay dads’ Mike Tiney and Chris Jodoin were braced for strange looks, but they’ve also found a community that embraces their newfound parenthood By Tereza Verenca
tverenca@newwestrecord.ca
Mike Tiney and Chris Jodoin always knew they wanted kids, but they weren’t sure which road to parenthood to take. Adopting and surrogacy were discussed at length many times. “We kind of came to the conclusion that we wanted a child as genetically close to us as possible,”Tiney, co-president of New West Pride, told the Record during an interview at their New West apartment. So when Jodoin’s sister-in-law, Jessie, joked that she’d be a surrogate for the couple, the idea stuck. “My husband and I didn’t want any more kids.We thought about it,” she said, adding it wasn’t a tough decision. “I think a lot of people have a problem with that. I knew, going forward, that it’s my nephew or my niece. The baby’s always going to be in my life.” Jessie decided to let the pair in on her decision by presenting them with an Easy Bake oven, a cheeky gesture they all laugh about today. With Jodoin as the sperm donor, all the family needed at the point was an egg donor. That’s where Tiney’s sister, Chelsea, comes in.The then-22-year-old said the decision was a no-brainer. “(My friends) thought it was crazy. A lot of my close friends, they’re not really close with their families, but to me, my family is everything. It’s like, ‘Yeah, why wouldn’t I do that?’” She wanted to do something special, too, so on Father’s Day 2014, Chelsea gave her brother a letter. “She took two eggs and drew two little faces on them and presented it to us, as a yes, I will do this,” said Tiney. Spencer David Jodoin came in to the world on March 9, 2016 at 10:37 p.m., weighing eight pounds, two ounces and measuring 21 inches long. (He had a full head of hair, too.) “I ugly cried,” Jodoin recalled, choking up a bit. Both Jodoin and Tiney, who have been together since 2010, were in the delivery room for the birth. Jodoin caught Spencer as he came out and Tiney cut the umbilical cord. They also hired a photographer to capture some of the first moments for the new family of three, including the skin-on-skin contact Spencer had with Jodoin. “No experience I ever will have again will compare to that moment. It was life changing,” said Tiney with a smile. MAKING IT WORK Going the surrogacy route didn’t come
A PRECIOUS GIFT: From left, Jessie Jodoin, Chris Jodoin, Spencer David Jodoin, Mike Tiney and his sister, Chelsea Tiney. Spencer, Mike and Chris’ son, was created from Chris’ sperm and Chelsea’s egg (Jessie was the surrogate). The gay couple wanted to have a child as genetically close to them as possible, and their siblings were all for the idea. PHOTO JENNIFER GAUTHIER cheap. To date, the couple has invested between $40,000 and $50,000 into the process. The money has covered everything from the invitro fertilization procedure and the hormone pills to the maternity clothes. Jodoin and Tiney also topped up Jessie’s EI benefits. Unlike some Canadian families, the couple didn’t have access to parental benefits. Because both of them are self-employed – Tiney, a contracted carpenter, and Jodoin, an event design and décor business owner – they were not eligible. When Spencer was born,Tiney took two weeks off from work and Jodoin stayed home for six weeks. “We just made do with staff and help from (our) moms,” said Jodoin. “I’d bring Spencer to meetings. I would take him to event set-ups.” With Spencer’s birthday nearing, the couple says they find it hard to believe a year has gone by. For Jodoin, his favourite part of parenting has been watching Spencer grow. “Seeing all the new stages is neat, like when he started crawling and walking along the furniture, eating his first foods,” he said. For Tiney, it’s seeing his son’s smile, hearing his giggles and seeing him manoeuvre on all fours as he crawls up a storm around the apartment. “The fact that he’s so happy. You hear horror stories all the time from parents,” he told the Record. Anyone who follows the couple on social media can attest to that happiness.Wheth-
er it’s a photo of Spencer getting his first haircut or a bath time video on Facebook, there’s always a fair amount of likes. Last summer, the family won an Instagram contest as part of International Kiss Day, which asked folks to submit a smoochworthy photo. The black-and-white picture featured Tiney and Jodoin sharing a kiss with Spencer in their arms. “I want to help promote inclusiveness with people in the community of all ages. I want them to know that a child with two dads, or with two moms, is just as loved and as ‘normal’ as any other child with a mom and a dad,” said Tiney of putting Spencer in the social media spotlight. SOUND ADVICE Tiney admitted he was “very afraid” about becoming a gay parent in his community. “I was worried about the looks we would get, what people would say when we were grocery shopping; two men pushing a grocery cart with a little kid,” he said. The couple does get looks,Tiney added, but they’re not bad looks. “They’re smiles and they’re surprised looks. So far, we haven’t encountered any sort of homophobic instances anywhere.” Jodoin noted they’ve been stopped on the street a couple of times while out for a walk, with people commenting on how cute Spencer is. “I heard one girl go, ‘Mom, did you see that? That’s two gay dads.’ It made us smile,” he said. When the time comes to send Spencer
off to school,Tiney hopes he’s treated well, given some stories he’s heard from another gay couple in New West. “Their daughter is in school, and I hear some of the stories of the parents, not the kids. ... Like not wanting their kid to play with her because she has two gay dads. And it’s like, really? That’s the part that’s not cool,” he said. “You’d think in this day and age people would be a little bit more respectful of a kid,” Jodoin chimed in. Regardless of these anecdotes,Tiney and Jodoin encourage gay couples to be brave and not scared in their pursuit of parenthood. “Just trust your gut,” said Jodoin. PAYING IT FORWARD Tiney and Jodoin couldn’t definitively say whether they’ll have more kids. If they choose to try for No. 2, they’ll need to find a new surrogate. For Jessie to carry another baby, it would mean complications. In the meantime, they’re paying it forward. A lesbian couple they know recently had their sperm donor back out at the last minute, so Jodoin agreed to provide the sperm, no questions asked. “It’s kind of our little way of (giving back); they (Chelsea and Jessie) helped us, so we’re going to try to help somebody else,” said the business owner. Tiney agreed. “Without them, it wouldn’t have happened. I still don’t know how we can ever repay them,” he said.

Kind words welcome Darcy pans new budget students at Glenbrook Theresa McManus

Students at École Glenbrook Middle School arrived on Wednesday morning to find a special message posted on their lockers. Things like “You brighten the world,” “You’re amazing” and “Be you” were written on post-it notes and stuck on all 630 lockers in the school as part of the leadership club’s AntiBullying Day post-it blitz. The idea was to have all the notes in place by the time students showed up in the morning, so they started the day off in a positive way, Natalia Fuentes told the Record. “A lot of people at school, they don’t think about what they’re saying and what words they’re putting into the minds of others until maybe it’s too late, so this really reminds us to just be kind and generous to others, and to be really careful with what you say,” said the

Grade 8 student. Fuentes was among about 20 students from the leadership club that volunteered to come to school early to put up the post-it notes. School counsellor Jane Osborne, who leads the club of kids in grades 6 to 8, said it was the students’ idea to do the blitz to mark Anti-Bullying Day. “They’re the ones who wanted to do it,” Osborne
said, adding the kids used their lunch hour on Monday to write all the messages in advance. For Fuentes, she hoped the action would have a big impact on her classmates. “I’m hoping that everyone is surprised, and that they really take this as a moment to reflect on what they’re saying and just be kind to others,” she said.
The B.C. Liberals have released a “forget-everything budget” in an attempt to woo voters in the spring election, says New Westminster NDP MLA Judy Darcy. On Tuesday, the provincial government released its fifth consecutive balanced budget. Highlights of the B.C. Liberals’ budget include reductions to MSP premiums for families with incomes of up to $120,000 (starting in January 2018) and a $740-million increase in education funding over three years. “This is Christy Clark’s forget-everything budget,” Darcy told the Record.
“This is a government that has made everything worse for regular families for years now. Now that an election is coming, she wants people to forget everything.” Darcy said the budget doesn’t erase the Liberals’ neglect of funding services that are important to British Columbians and their “endless hikes” to programs. Under the Liberal government, she said the average family is paying more than $1,000 in additional fees as a result of hikes to MSP premiums and ICBC and Hydro rates. “I would give it an F because it is an attempt at a forget-everything budget,” she said of the budget. According to Darcy,

Spike in bike thefts A recent spate of bicycle thefts in the Quayside neighbourhood has police reminding the public to protect their rides. In the few days leading up to Family Day, there were three bikes stolen along Quayside Drive, including two on Feb. 11 alone. In light of this surge, the New Westminster Police Department is asking residents in the area to take care when securing their bicycles. To better protect them, residents are reminded to lock bikes with two locks,
including a U-lock and a cable lock, if possible. If only using one lock, make sure it’s a U-lock, according to police. Bicycles should be locked to secure structures or in a bike room, cage or locker, and be sure to record the serial number in case it’s ever stolen. Police recommend registering any bike with 529 Garage, a free registry that helps police recover it in the event of a theft. – By Cayley Dobie, staff reporter

HAPPY CLIENT COMMENTS: I loved working with Sandy and Lyle when selling our home... they were highly professional, yet very personable!
Lyle & Sandy sold our family home in less than a week, $62 thousand over list price with full MLS Service & saved us over $20 thousand in real estate commission fees!
Sandy and Lyle sold our home in a week and for a price way above of what we were asking. Their experience, skills, and knowledge brought a fantastic result, while their friendly approach made the whole process stress-free.
We just completed our third real estate transaction with Sandy and Lyle. We have bought one property and sold two properties through Sandy and Lyle. Our purchase was made under the listing price and both of our sales were completed at substantially over the listing price. Both sales were... completed within a week of listing and were totally painless. I have worked with full commission agents and can honestly say that Sandy and Lyle provided better service and worked harder than the full commission agents. I wouldn’t hesitate recommending Sandy and Lyle to friends and family and of course Sandy and Lyle will be my first and best option if I need any help with a property in the future. It’s a win-win situation. The seller saves on commission and the buyer is able purchase the property at a lower price due to the lower commission.
I highly recommend Sandy and Lyle to anyone in need of a realtor! Marta & Robert Svejkovsky.
Daryl Magnusson.
Working with Lyle and Sandy was a slice of Heaven. They sold our home in one week, and for above asking price. We then used them to purchase a new home as well. They had a great knack for matching our needs with the homes they showed us. Through them we found the perfect home! This was the best service we have had in terms of real estate selling and purchasing. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for realtors.

Opinion OUR VIEW
Greens putting their bets on young voters Andrew Weaver’s bill may seem a tad self serving. The B.C. Green Party leader and MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head re-introduced the Election Amendment Act 1 in the legislature this week. The bill would allow 16-yearolds to vote in B.C. Chances are Weaver believes young people are more interested in the future of the planet than older folks are. And that those
same young voters will see his party as sharing those principles. This may be a big assumption, or not. It’s true that young people today are certainly exposed more to environmental issues. The media 20 years ago seldom mentioned climate change.Today, whether you get your news directly from mainstream sources or via Facebook, concerns about the planet’s environmental future are ever present.
Now, whether young people believe that politics can actually change things, is another matter altogether. And whether they won’t be as self-serving as older voters is another question. The number of young voters compared to older voters in every Canadian election is still much smaller. In the 2015 federal election, the participation of voters aged 18 to 24 was 57.1 per cent. Participation
of voters aged 25 to 34 was 57.4 per cent. But voters aged 65 to 74 continued to have the highest participation rate of all age groups, with 78.8 per cent. It would appear that unless more young voters get out to vote, politicians will continue to cater to the concerns of older voters. And those concerns are often about keeping the status quo – not changing it. But what is perhaps equally interesting is that more
younger voters turned out to vote than in the previous federal election in 2011. In fact voters aged 18 to 24 increased by 18.3 percentage points compared to 2011.That was the largest increase for this age group since Elections Canada began reporting demographic data on turnout in 2004. In comparison, the increase in voter participation for voters aged 65 to 74 was only 3.7 per cent. If the trend continues,
young voters could have a real impact on politics in Canada. But will they? Weaver is trying to boost those odds a bit by lowering the voting age in B.C. We doubt his bill has legs, but it may give us a little window into the future. And as far as tipping points go where demographics and voters are concerned, only time will truly tell.
MY VIEW KEITH BALDREY
Time is ticking for lumber deal It’s hard to see how U.S. President Donald Trump will improve B.C.’s chances for reaching a new deal on softwood lumber. Then again, he may not be worse on this file than was the Obama administration that preceded his ascension to power. That strange take partly explains the fingers-crossed, glass-half-full pronouncements from Premier Christy Clark in recent days. She says the Obama administration essentially refused to discuss a new softwood deal in its waning months in power, preferring to spend 100 per cent of its attention on the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal. By contrast, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his officials managed to get the softwood issue onto the agenda during his recent (and apparently successful) meeting with Trump. David MacNaughton, Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., briefed the B.C. cabinet on the softwood situation last week and later told reporters Canadian officials had been pushing the softwood issue at the Trump administration. “For them it’s minor, they see it as a small, regional issue. And I think the most important thing that we did was to impress on them how important it is to Canada, that this isn’t a small regional issue,” he said. Indeed, the issue is of particularly crucial importance to this province. The end of the softwood agreement and the prospect of
punishing duties slapped on our exports of softwood lumber to the United States potentially impacts about 60,000 direct and indirect forestry jobs in B.C., located in 140 communities. MacNaughton was accompanied to the cabinet briefing by David Emerson, recently appointed B.C.’s envoy to Washington to reach a new softwood deal. Emerson, a former federal trade minister and exB.C. finance minister, didn’t mince words on how tough it will be to get a deal that satisfies B.C. For all of MacNaughton’s cautious optimism (shared, apparently, by the premier), Emerson made it clear a tough road lies ahead. He should know: he negotiated the last deal in 2006. The chaotic nature of the first few weeks of the Trump administration makes it hard for anyone to draw too many conclusions. In any event, the clock is now ticking. The first duties (likely exceeding 20 per cent and perhaps reaching as high as 30 per cent) may start taking effect next month, which will quickly affect the cash flow for smaller forestry operators and likely lead to significant layoffs. So here we are, hoping that a man who is out of step with so many Canadian values comes through in the clutch and helps British Columbia. Glass half full? Hmm. I’ll go with almost empty. But I’ll still keep my fingers crossed. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

No Julio for you A local Julio Iglesias fan had to resign himself to being on the outside looking in when the Spanish singer played Vancouver in June. In May, 22-year-old Stewart Bell had come home from a night out and found his Agnes Street apartment had been broken into and a thief had made off with tickets to the concert as well as tickets to a WWF battle and a Rush concert. Since he didn’t know the seat number, and the Iglesias concert had been sold out, Bell was pretty sure he was out of luck.

Pastor has the courage of his convictions
Dear Editor: Re: Pastor takes on transgender rights, the Record, Feb. 9. I commend Pastor Paul Dirks for initiating the Woman Means Something campaign. Dirks is one of very few Canadians with the courage to speak out publicly against Bill C-16 and his courage has come with a cost, from personal attacks on social media to being slandered by Global B.C. news as a hater. Dirks speaks for many Canadians who have serious concerns over the far-reaching implications of Bill C-16. The supposed intention behind Bill C-16 is to protect the basic human rights of the transgender community in Canada. Considered in itself, that is a noble intention. All human beings should be treated with dignity and respect. The concern of people like Dirks and the present writer is the manner in which Bill C-16 proposes to do that. This proposed legislation will enshrine in Canadian law an entirely new definition of gender as whatever one wants to make of it (one’s “sense of being a woman, a man, both, neither, or anywhere along the gender spectrum”) rather than the millennia-old definition of gender as the God-given biological reality of male and female.
Radical legislation like this merits open and honest dialogue in the public arena – not the shouting-down and personal attacks that increasingly typifies moral discourse in our country. Thanks to the New West Record for giving Dirks a fair opportunity to represent himself. Gary Zekveld, New Westminster
Fearmongering over trans rights is wrong
Dear Editor: Re: Pastor takes on transgender rights, Feb. 9. As a female high-school student, I find it offensive and discriminatory that transgender people should be stripped of their human rights in order to prevent something that has nothing to do with them. Firstly, the Canadian Human Rights Act is not trying to legalize sexual assault. It’s still illegal to go into a bathroom and rape someone. Secondly, there isn’t a lock that takes a blood sample from every user to find out whether they have an XY chromosome or not. Anyone can go into a bathroom and rape someone without having to look like the respective gender. There is no security measure to prevent entry to a bathroom. It’s 2017. I thought for sure people would be allowed to pee without being harassed these days. Gabrielle Alvarez, Burnaby

Weaver predicts win in city shared vision.” New Westminster incumbent NDP MLA Judy Darcy said she wouldn’t comment on Weaver’s prediction. “I have worked 24/7 as the MLA for New Westminster for the past four years and I hear an awful lot on the doorstep of recognition of that good work,” she said. “In addition to that, what I hear people saying is we can’t afford four more years of Christy Clark. And at the end of the day, I think it’s your record as an MLA and it’s the record of this Liberal government that is going to determine the outcome. I don’t make any predictions. of New Westminster. We will know on May 9.” Darcy agrees that British Columbians want a change in the provincial government, but believes the NDP is the better choice. She said New Democrats have fought on British Columbians’ behalf on issues like MSP rates, health care, vulnerable youth in care, seniors’ care and good-paying, family-supporting jobs “I hear very strong support for the NDP and I hear support that is getting stronger all the time,” she said. Darcy said she’s focusing on issues that matter to New West residents and British Columbians, not her competition on the ballot.

Judy Darcy won, in what everyone thinks is an NDP city, with only 29 per cent of registered voters voting for her,” he said. “Only 29 per cent of people registered to vote in the riding actually voted for Judy. When we think of it as an NDP town, what we are saying is a lot of people don’t vote because they think of it as an NDP town.” According to Weaver, Campbell is a candidate who inspires people who normally stay home to come out and vote on election day.Weaver, who became the Green Party of B.C.’s first MLA in 2013, said British Columbians are “fed up” and want change. “We are running to govern this election,” he said of the Greens. “We are not running to finish third place or fourth or be a social conscience. We have exceptional candidates. We are willing to accept as many seats as the voters give us.” While some may question whether that’s feasible, Weaver cited election wins in a number of jurisdictions, including theYukon and Alberta, as well as the most recent federal election in Canada and the United States presidential election, as indicators of people wanting change. “People are so fed up,” he said. “They look at the corporate cronyism of the B.C. Liberals and they are just fed up.They look to the NDP and say, ‘You have had 16 years.’They were basically given the last election on a silver platter, and they blew it because they were too afraid to take a stand. City couple attacked
Homophobic slurs, rock thrown through car window By Cayley Dobie
cdobie@newwestrecord.ca
A New Westminster man is warning the public after he and his partner were attacked at a gas station on Sixth Street last week. It all happened on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. Hnat Richards and his partner were at the Chevron gas station at Sixth and Brantford streets around 2:30 p.m. when a man they’d never met walked up to them and started making conversation. He asked the couple if they knew where the nearest rehab facility was, and when they said they didn’t, he asked about their car. “He started touching our car and started to peel this plastic that protects from water getting into our car, and we asked him not to do that, and he even poked a hole in it after we said that. So that’s when we said to him, kindly, ‘You have to go;

Instead, Richards said the man got defensive and tried to provoke him, asking him what he was “going to do about it.” Then he made racist and homophobic remarks, all the while threatening Richards and his partner, Rich-

They were waiting to turn right onto Sixth Street when from out of the corner of his eye, Richards, who was driving, said he saw the man running towards them with two large rocks in his hands. “I told Matt, ‘My god, he’s coming!’ It happened so fast,” he said. “He came

They searched the area but couldn’t find him, Richards said. He spoke with an officer after the incident and gave a description of the man, who
was sporting a distinctive neck tattoo of a chain with a cross, he said. The officer seemed to know who the man was, Richards added. “I thought I was a tough guy, but this has taken a toll,” he told the Record. Richards said police have since identified the suspect and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. The Record contacted
the New Westminster Police Department for further details on the incident but has yet to hear back. Richards hopes by sharing his story, people in the community will be on alert and the suspect won’t get a chance to hurt anyone else.

BRINK, a group exhibition, opens with a reception on Friday, Feb. 24 from 7 to 10 p.m. Artist Stefan Tiefengraber will be on hand for a talk to start the evening.
Works teeter, circle and quiver in the balance The exhibition then runs from Saturday, Feb. 25 to Sunday, April 30. The group exhibition features artists who work across disciplines – in video and sculptural, electronic media. “Electronic media and robotic works, as well as a large-scale video installa-
tion, establish fragile equilibriums,” a press release says. “There are ambiguous tensions here; between freedom of choice and its repercussions; between what we understand as success, failure or stasis.Works teeter, circle and quiver in the balance. The timing and outcome of what might happen next; the resolution we hope for (the resolution we fear) leaves us on the brink.” The exhibition includes the work of five artists: Miguel Angel Rios of Argentina, Nelmarie du Preez of South Africa, David Bowen and Jacob Tonski of the U.S.A., and Tiefengraber, who’s from Austria. The New Media Gallery is at Anvil Centre, 777 Columbia St. For more information, call 604-875-1865 or see www.newmediagallery.ca.

Stories in stage showcase It’s a celebration of Black History Month showcasing the talents of young performers. The African Stages Association of B.C. is bringing its production, Story-Powering OurYouth, to the stage at Anvil Centre for the Arts for four shows from Feb. 24 to 26. The performance is directed by Comfort Adesuwa Ero, an award-winning teacher, writer and storyteller. It stems from the StoryPowering OurYouth project,
in which young people learn how to support their peers, stand against bullies and be fair and supportive to each other. “All these happen not with too much teaching, but with African performing arts,” a write-up about the project explains. “Now, we want to show our youths’ achievements in a bigger spectrum.” African Stages’ youth group will use dramatized storytelling, drumming and dancing to herald messages of solidarity and inclusion.
It’s open to people of all ages, and kids are welcome to attend the performances. Story-Powering Our Youth is on Friday, Feb. 24 at 12:30 and 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 25 at 1:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 regular, $8 for youth aged 13 to 18, and $3 for kids aged two to 12, plus service charges. See www.anvilcentre.com or buy tickets through www. ticketsnw.ca. – Julie MacLellan

FROM THE CLASSROOM The following was submitted by Isabel Hunt, a student at Purpose Secondary School: Dale Darychuk, a trial lawyer in New Westminster, visited Purpose Sec-
ondary Independent School with his dog Romeo late last year. Darychuk, with help from Romeo, talked about the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society or PADS, which trains pups to become service, hearing or intervention dogs, depending on their breed and temperament. Although Romeo hasn’t been trained, he demonstrated how beneficial a support
dog can be. Romeo is a gentle and quiet dog, and Darychuk brings him to his office as an unofficial therapy dog. Romeo’s presence provides a calming influence that helps his clients during their visit at the firm. Many students benefited from Romeos’ visit, feeling more calm and relaxed after sitting with him and receiving his affectionate licks.

More HandyDART trips planned for region Theresa McManus
tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
TransLink’s latest announcement about its 10-year vision for Metro Vancouver transit and transportation will come as good news to local seniors. TransLink recently announced it will be funding an additional 85,000 HandyDART trips in 2017 for customers who rely on the door-to-door service to travel across Metro Vancouver for medical appointments, work, community events and visits to family and friends. According to TransLink, the top four destinations for HandyDART are hospitals, day programs, colleges and universities, and stroke recovery clubs. In 2016, HandyDART delivered about 1.2 million trips and its vehicles travelled almost 8.9 million kilometres. “HandyDART is a lifeline for people who are unable to use our buses and
trains – that’s why we prioritized adding more HandyDART services as quickly as possible,”TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond said in a news release. “It’s a critical service for our region, connecting customers with their communities and helping them get to where they need to go.” Prior to the announcement, B.C.’s Seniors Advocate released a survey of almost 7,500 HandyDART users. The survey found that 91 per cent of users are satisfied with the service when they receive it, but nearly one-third of respondents say it’s not meeting, or only moderately meeting, their transportation needs. “Obviously there’s good news here,” seniors advocate Isobel Mackenzie said in a press release. “People are telling us that across many aspects of this service, things are positive, however we are still concerned that there are a significant number of seniors whose trans-
portation meets are not being met.” Along with ride availability, wait times for rides and the booking experiences, including the time required to book rides in advance, are areas where riders who completed the survey feel improvements are most needed. “The cost of the service is another area that we need to look closely at,” Mackenzie said. “While 83 per cent of respondents told us cost is not an issue, we have to remember that some of our lowest income seniors rely heavily on this service and
they clearly are telling us if it costs less, they would use it more.” According to the seniors advocate, 53 per cent of HandyDART users have an income of less than $20,000, while 15 per cent have incomes of less than $10,000 per year. The advocate’s office stated that 78 per cent of HandyDART users are 65 are older. ATransLink press releases states thatTransLink began a review of policies and service structure in June 2016. It is also assessing HandyDART fees as part of its transit fare review process.
Highlights from the Seniors Advocate’s survey on HandyDART " Almost 80 per cent of HandyDART clients are able to book a roundtrip always or most of the time. " 26 per cent said they were rarely or never able to get a ride when placed on standby. " 28 per cent of riders whose annual income is less than $10,000 said they would use HandyD-
ART more often if it cost less. " 38 per cent are somewhat or not at all familiar with no-show or cancelation policies. " 60 per cent of clients report they always reach appointments on time. Less than 50 per cent report they are always picked up within the 30-minute window.

While the weather channels are forecasting some mixed precipitation – including snow – this weekend, spring is just around the corner. For local seniors interested in trying out some new activities or getting set for spring, Century House is the place to be. Royal City Musical Theatre’s annual productions at Massey Theatre are a springtime tradition in the Royal City. While many people have enjoyed a play, concert or musical, few may have a working knowledge of how it all happens. The Making of a Musical will teach folks the inner workings, from understanding a script to seeing how a technical rehearsal brings it all together. They’ll cap off all that knowledge
by attending a production of Anything Goes at Massey Theatre. Open to folks aged 50 and up,The Making of Musical takes place at Century House on Mondays from March 27 to April 24

Loud, colourful, sassy, unpredictable and full of heart. Those adjectives have been used to describe Vancouver’s iconic Elbow Room Café – and now they’re also being applied to a new musical that pays tribute to the Davie Street institution. Elbow Room Café:The Musical is set to run at theYork Theatre in Vancouver from March 1 to 12, and a New Westminster actor is one of its stars. David M. Adams appears as Bryan, one half of the couple who owns the eatery. The other half, Patrice, is portrayed by Allan Zinyk. The real-life couple has run the café since 1983, growing a reputation for offering a sassy, fun and sarcastic atmosphere along with its brunch food. “Bryan and Patrice have been the heart and soul of this restaurant that has become a refuge and a safe place for people of all backgrounds,” says a write-up

Can the Great Gig help to rebrand New West? Musician wants downtown to become a draw for nightlife Julie MacLellan
jmaclellan@newwestrecord.ca
Michael Dunn has lived in NewWest for more than 20 years, and he’s been watching the city’s growth and revitalization with interest. “When we first moved here, Columbia Street was not the kind of place you’d say, Saturday morning, ‘Let’s go for a coffee,’” he says. He’s seen that change over the past two decades, but every time he talks about the revitalization of downtown, two themes keep coming up: the need for more cool restaurants and the need for some kind of a cultural-entertainment draw. “It’s been the talk-talktalk topic for years,” he said. Now he’s decided it’s time to stop talking and start doing. With his own background in the music industry – he used to play the Vancouver bar circuit in a rock band and then worked as a record engineer at local studios – music has always been important to him. So he decided to organize and promote The Great Gig in NewWest – a night of rock music at the Columbia Theatre on Saturday, March 4. Dunn has pulled together a roster of local musicians – from amateurs who perform on the side to professionals who’ve worked with the best of the best – to bring to life the music of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, the Police and U2. “I’m trying to shine a light on local players and let people know there are some really good musicians in town,” he says. He’s chosen to stage the show at the Columbia Theatre because he wants to take advantage of the “concert” atmosphere; the audience won’t be distracted by the goings-on in a bar but will be there to strictly focus on the music. “The goal is to bring quality musicians together in a quality environment,” he says. Dunn’s ultimate goal is as lofty as it is simple: “I’d like to brand NewWest as a cultural destination for the Lower Mainland.” He notes that the work has already begun – Paul Minhas at the Heritage Grill, for instance, offers

nightly entertainment. But Dunn figures that with two beautiful theatre facilities downtown, in the Columbia and the new Anvil Centre, there’s room for much, much more. “I really think we can get NewWest on the map,” he says. Even his poster for the event – which shows a guitar that blends into and becomes part of the Pattullo Bridge – is part of his
“branding” efforts. And, as an added incentive for local audiences, Dunn is donating $9 from every ticket sold to the band program at NewWestminster Secondary School, where his three now-adult daughters all studied. “This contribution is my way of helping support the great work they do to encourage appreciation of the arts and music in particular,” Dunn explains.

Beethoven’s Fifth in spotlight at Massey NewWestminster Symphony brings classical masterpiece to the stage in a Sunday afternoon concert March 5 Its opening bars are among the most famous notes in the world of classical music – and the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra is bringing it to the stage. Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is the centrepiece of the orchestra’s upcoming March 5 concert at Massey Theatre. The symphony, of course, is best known for its Victory Theme – the short-shortshort-long pattern of notes that stands for V in Morse code and that ended up being used by the BBC to introduce its radio news broadcasts during the Second World War. The piece itself was written in 1808, when Beethoven’s hearing loss had already begun. It will be joined on the
program by Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, featuring clarinet soloist Gene Ramsbottom. Ramsbottom is currently the principal clarinetist with Vancouver’s West Coast Symphony Orchestra and is the conductor of the Terrace Symphony. “Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto is the finest ever written for this instrument, and the music has a consistently melancholy beauty,” says local arts promoter Tony Antonias. The concert will open with the prelude to Smetana’s comic opera The Bartered Bride. The New Westminster Symphony Orchestra is onstage Sunday, March 5 at 2 p.m. at Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave. Admission is by donation at the door. See www.newwest

TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT UPCOMING CHAMBER EVENTS OR TO BECOME A MEMBER, PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE Innovation in Business The mistake a lot of people make when they think about “innovation” as it relates to their business is they generally go straight for images of computers, software, and other potentially expensive components of their office. But the truth is that innovation doesn’t always mean computers and coding. Innovation is about problem solving, something most business owners need to do on a daily basis. The difference is that the problem they’re working to solve isn’t often as clear-cut as “I need new envelopes printed” or “I think I’m ready to hire another employee but I don’t know where to look”. Innovation is about finding new approaches to old problems, or solving problems before they’ve even appeared. Innovation can be as simple as providing a new kind of stapler for your employees to use that doesn’t misfire as many staples, or in figuring out a way to use up all the cardboard leftover after a job. In New Westminster, innovation is quite the buzzword as we prepare for Innovation Week, coming February 24 - March 3. We are thrilled to be partnering with the City of New Westminster and have organized a Leadership Dinner featuring six of our region’s Mayors as well as Dr. Peter Payne from the Innovation Boulevard in Surrey. The dinner is March 2, and takes place at Anvil Centre. Tickets are now available. Our esteemed panel will be discussing how their home communities are integrating innovation in their municipalities, and even more important, discussing how our cities can all work together for the betterment of us all. We think that’s real thought innovation. We hope you’ll join us. www.leadershipdinnernw.eventbrite.ca

RIVER DIALOGUES
WHAT’S HAPPENING? Fraser River Discovery Centre is launching its new Fraser River Dialogues series on March 7 with a talk about the future of Fraser River salmon. WHO IS THE SPEAKER? Dr. Brian Riddell, president and CEO of the Pacific Salmon Foundation, will discuss the situation and explain what the foundation is doing about it through its Salish Sea Marine Survival Project. Riddell is a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s expert panel on ocean climate change and marine biodiversity, as well as a Canadian commissioner to the Pacific Salmon Commission, which is the group formed by Canadian and American governments to implement the Pacific Salmon Treaty. WHAT IS THE SALISH SEA MARINE SURVIVAL
PROJECT (SSMSP) ABOUT? It’s a study with the goals of understanding what is limiting salmon production in B.C.’s local seas and to restore the once-thriving fisheries for Coho and Chinook salmon in the Strait of Georgia. HOW IMPORTANT ARE SALMON TO THE FRASER RIVER? “Wild Pacific salmon are critically important to the Fraser River and the province as a whole from an economic, environmental and sociocultural perspective,” Riddell said in a press release. “So the challenges they are facing affect all of us in one way or another. That’s why Fraser River salmon are a significant focus of the SSMSP – we need to find out what is happening to them and what we can do to fix the problem. I look forward to sharing my perspective and what we have learned
so far during the inaugural Fraser River Dialogue.” WHAT WILL THE DIALOGUES BE LIKE? The dialogue will feature a “fireside” chat format rather than a traditional power point presentation. Discovery Centre executive director Stephen Bruyneel will have a conversation with the invited guest, who will speak on the topic from an environmental, social and/ or economic perspective. The chat will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience. DETAILS, PLEASE: A limited number of tickets are available for the March 7 event. For $75, tickets feature a pre-event reception from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and a reserved ticket to the fireside chat. For the event itself, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., tickets are $50. Charitable receipts can be issued upon request. For tickets, go to www.tinyurl.com/ fraserriverdialogues and for more information go to www.fraserriverdiscovery. org. – Theresa McManus

Q A
Does hay fever/allergic rhinitis affect CPAP use?
Yes, nasal congestion can make it very difficult to use CPAP therapy. Heated humidification and a climate controlled hose can greatly decrease the symptoms of nasal congestion, dry nose and throat. A hypoallergenic filter can also help minimize breathing in allergens. Remember to change your filter monthly. Keep the windows closed during pollen season, and make sure that dust/pet dander is not accumulating in the bedroom. Many people find that a daily sinus rinse helps relieve congestion. Prescription nasal sprays or allergy medications can also relieve symptoms. Visit a CanSleep location to speak with a therapist about adjusting your humidity. Breathe Better. Sleep Easy. Live Well. Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, refers to an eye infection or inflammation that causes the affected eye and inner eyelid lining to be red and sometimes swollen. It is DR. NELLY KIM usually of a bacterial, viral, or allergic nature. Bacterial conjunctivitis usually results in an increase in thick discharge from the affected eye, while viral conjunctivitis causes an increase in weeping or watering. A hallmark symptom of allergic conjunctivitis is significant itching. Bacterial and viral conjunctivitis can be contagious, so it is important to practice good habits of washing hands, not touching the affected eye, and not sharing towels to prevent spread. It is important to diagnose pink eye accurately and promptly, as early treatment can limit its spread and help to resolve symptoms. Visit your Doctor of Optometry for more information.

any people stop by my office and ask me this same question. There is no longer a paper that contains New Westminster specific real estate. With a shift to online listings, the demand for DERRICK THORNHILL listings in print has become Park Georgia Realty all but obsolete. There are, however, a lot of people that have expressed interest in having such a paper. It is for this reason that I decided to create my own New Westminster publication called “BEST OF NEW WEST”. ‘THE BEST OF NEW WEST’ is a collection of the best houses, townhouses and condo listings available at the time of its publication in print. It’s a short list of what in my opinion is the best available real estate currently for sale in the Royal City. The properties included are not solely my listings, but any MLS listing I believe to qualify as a top pick. My listings are advertised on the front and back of the publication as well as the inside covers.
(formerly family eye care centre)
This publication, although printed only quarterly, is updated monthly online at www. bestofnewwest.ca If you want to see more information or photos of any listing in the publication simply visit www.bestofnewwest. ca and click on the listing. The ‘BEST OF NEW WEST’ also contains many useful articles surrounding all things real estate with my personal and professional slant. From a market update/forecast to timely buying and selling tips as well as seasonal maintenance reminders to keep your home running smoothly.

How has snowy weather affected house sales this year?
With snow on the ground for all of January and well into February, it has been difficult to show houses, do opens DERRICK THORNHILL and perform usual real estate related Park Georgia Realty activities. In spite of these hurdles, my phone continued to ring. Detached home sales were at record lows as well as the inventory of detached homes, the strata market continues to chug along with strong sales volumes and higher sale prices. New first time buyer incentives and a roll back on the foreign buyers tax should fuel a strong spring market. If you’re considering selling this spring, it would be a good idea to have your home on the market a little earlier then normal to take advantage of the pent-up buying activity that has been held back by our unseasonal weather.

Does Oily Skin Need A Moisturizer?
If you have oily skin, you might be thinking,“I don’t need any more oil on my face!” And you are right! What you do need is moisture. KATIE MARSHALL Big difference. Oily skin types are generally dehydrated, and that’s a big part of the problem. Your skin is screaming,“Quick! Make more oil!” But it really needs water. That’s why you need an oil-free moisturizer. Your skin needs balance! Your local drugstore or department store does offer a wide variety of products, but are they right for you? Well, you can spend a lot of money trying to find out. What’s worse, these products don’t have a lot of active ingredients to help balance your skin, and also have pore cloggers in them so you’re not getting much help for a complicated problem.

I don’t take my cat to the vet because she gets stressed. What can I do?
Even indoor cats benefit from wellness examinations once a year. Here are some tips for reducing the stress of vet visits: 1) Leave the carrier out all the time with DR. MANJU ARORA soft, familiar bedding inside. Place toys, catnip or treats inside. 2) Choose a sturdy carrier that opens from the top and side. The top should be removed to get cats out if they do not come out on their own. 3) Cover the carrier with a blanket or towel. 4) Spray the carrier with Feliway calming spray from your veterinarian 15 minutes before placing your cat inside. 5) When transporting, keep the carrier level and fasten with a seatbelt. 6) Choose a veterinary hospital that is designated Cat Friendly Practice by the AAFP.

Metro Vancouver and the B.C. Non-Profit Housing Association are on the hunt for volunteers to help with the 2017 Homeless Count. While the majority of the 1,200 volunteer spaces have already been filled, volunteers are still needed in a number of communities: New Westminster – 30; Burnaby – 30; North Shore – 30; and Surrey – 120. The count, taking place over a 24-hour period on March 7 and 8, aims to represent a conservative, pointin-time snapshot of people who are homeless on a given day in Metro Vancouver. The count takes place every three years. According to a press release from the B.C. NonProfit Housing Association and Metro Vancouver, the count has three main goals: " To estimate the number of people who are homeless, including drawing upon existing data sources such as shelters, census, hospitals,
jails and housing data; " To obtain a demographic profile of people; and " To identify long-term trends in the number and profile of people who are homeless. See www.bcnpha.ca/ call-volunteers for info.

So if somebody doesn’t do anything, it’ll keep happening, keep happening, keep happening. So we need to stop the cycle, and the first thing to stop the cycle is to notify an adult,” Lau said.

Boys prepared to defend mat crown at BCs NewWest wrestlers are a dozen strong heading to provincial championships in Salmon Arm this weekend
Dan Olson
dolson@newwestrecord.ca
It’s not by any definition a field trip, but the 12 New Westminster Secondary boys heading to Salmon Arm this weekend hope to turn it into a field day. The dozen student-athletes making the trek have qualified for the provincial high school wrestling championships, after laying
down strong results at last week’s zone playdowns in Coquitlam. And while he didn’t compete due to an injury, senior Connor Pattison will be front and centre as the Hyacks team looks to defend its title in the boys division. “We hope to have big performances from all of our zone champions (like B.C. champion) Connor Pattison, plus Daniel Dordevic, who is a newcomer in the heavy-
weight division (and) shown great promise,” New West wrestling coach Gord Sturrock said. Pattison, who won last year’s 90-kilogram B.C. title with a come-from-behind effort, was petitioned into the provincials. Picking up zone gold were Grade 11sYanni Angelopoulos, in 110kg, Jason Groux in 66kg, Isaiah James in 110+kg, Hossain Shidfar in 78kg, and Sammy
Sidhu in 84kg. Angelopoulos bested fellow Hyack Anthony Dillman in the final, while Grade 10 Evan Nolli finished third in the 110kg division. Coming in fifth place was Darrio Cade. Groux beat Centennial’s Jivan Basi in the 66kg category, while James defeated Heritage Woods’ Jacob Reis in the 110+kg division. Coming in third place was Dordevic.

Driven partially by necessity but also by design, the New Westminster Salmonbellies stocked its cupboard last week through some fishing of a different sort. While nearly all their Western Lacrosse Association rivals were casting their nets in the Junior draft, New West reached over the Rockies and inked three Alberta junior graduates. Coming westward are Austin Jerhoff,Tory Tremblay and Sean Tyrrell, all seasoned junior talent with legitimate chances at earning positions with the 2017 Salmonbellies. While trades to acquire veterans Kevin Crowley, Brett Mydske and Joel McCready reduced their chances at the WLA draft table, New West general manager Dan Richardson said the three Albertans were on their radar nonetheless. “We always want to have youth pushing the envelope so to speak, so there’s no chance of complacency,” said Richardson. And with just four selections in the annual graduating B.C. junior draft – and only one in the top 40 – thinking outside the box was required. But team alumnus Dave Matheson provided some valuable intel when it came to the Alberta talent pool. “(Matheson) has lived in Calgary and put us on to these players,” said Richardson. “He coached them in bantam and midget, so when he came out here a few years ago for the midget nationals, he asked us if he could use the (Salmonbellies) dressing room for his team... Apparently the kids were in awe with the heritage and ambience.” Jerhoff, at 6-foot-2, is a quick-strike playmaker on the rightside who is attending Lynn University in Florida. A film student at Capilano University,Tremblay plays the transitional defensive position, while Tyrrell is an aggressive sniper, having been one of the Alberta junior circuit’s top scorers with Okotoks. Only 5-foot-8,Tyrrell brings big skills to the floor, and is currently a captain at UMass-Lowell in Boston. At the draft table with the 10th overall selection, the ’Bellies reached even further east by choosing Chris Cloutier of Kitchener, who played with the Coquitlam Adanacs in 2015. “In our books, if he was a western kid, (Cloutier) was the best player in the draft,” said Richardson. New West also selected Nanaimo’s Jake Latin, at 41st, Delta’s Brett Andersen, at 48th, and Burnaby’s Kyle Heiling with the 55th pick.
In the 78kg final, Shidfar defeated St.Thomas More’s Joel Pielak, while Sidhu prevailed in the 84kg division over STM’s Sam Steele. Angelopoulos and Sidhu will be targeting their second provincial medal, after securing bronze at last year’s championships. Also qualifying were Juan Cespedes and Alec Lakusta, who finished fourth and fifth respectively in 60kg.
Final buzzer: New Westminster Grade 11 guard Sarah Forgie scored 42 points Tuesday in a hard-fought but season-ending 77-69 loss to Yale in the wildcard playoff game, which decided one of the final berths to the provincial championships. PHOTO JENNIFER GAUTHIER
For the New Westminster senior girls Hyacks, the 201617 season held a lot of promise, hope and expectations – as it does nearly every year. But while the majority of players were Grade 11s, the goal of reaching the B.C. High School 3-A girls basketball championships proved to be a moving target. New West saw its season come to a close Tuesday, onewin shy of punching their ticket to Langley, when they fell 77-69 toYale in a wildcard game. Despite a 42-point performance from Grade 11 guard Sarah Forgie, the Hyacks were unable to stymieYale’s three-point shooting game, which accounted for 33 of the Abbotsford team’s points. Grade 10 guard Natalie Nastase counted 14 points and senior Jaime Lee chipped in nine in the loss. Still, New West demonstrated all year why they were constantly in the mix and a serious challenge to their Lower Mainland rivals. They posted a 27-7 record, including a perfect 7-0 mark in Burnaby-New West league play. They also captured Collingwood, St.Thomas More and Bob Gair Classic tournament titles, while finishing second at a Hawaiian tourney in December. The team will graduate Keja Davis, Sean He and Lee, but will potentially have 12 returnees, battling players from the junior district runners-up for spots on the roster.

Another comment reads “The real deal! If you want an authentic pierogi, you gotta eat here.”

Business has been booming ever since Ryszard Madziag and Iwona Mieszkowska opened the doors to their family-owned restaurant last November. “Every month, we do much better than the last. We gave many say, ‘Oh, its just like coming to grandma’s house’” Madziag told the Record.“I think people enjoy the very intimate and warm atmosphere.” The dining area is modest, with five tables that could seat 15 people. Antiques are scattered around the room, including a painting from 1892 and an old sewing machine. The menu itself has something for everyone. You can choose from a list of 16 different pierogies, like sauerkraut and mushroom and potato and onion. If you don’t fancy dumpling or cabbage rolls, there’s also a variety of salads, paninis and soups. The red borscht has become the No. 1 seller! Everything is made fresh in house, so you can expect authentic food. “We wanted to bring a pierogi place to New Westminster because there’s nothing really like this around here,” Mieszkowska said.

When asked about naming the business after his partner, Madziag smiled and explained Iwona Pierogies has a second meaning.“I want a pierogi. Get it?” Located at 806 20th Street, the restaurant is open six days a week, closed on Mondays.
Owner - Iwona Mieszkowska & Ryszard Madziag
In their fifties and sixties, the couple has no plans to retire anytime soon. “This is our hobby,” Madziag said.“We want to share our pierogies with everyone, not just the Polish people, but with those who have never tried them.” For more information call 604-524-4144 and to view the full menu, visit iwonapierogies.ca
