Arenex input ‘broke’ the city’s survey Should services be offered at an expanded Canada Games site or continue to be in a standalone facility? By Theresa McManus

tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca

To say Royal City residents are interested in the fate of the Arenex in Queen’s Park is an understatement. In response to the de-

struction of the Arenex, the City of New Westminster has been offering an online survey about whether its services should be relocated to an expanded facility at the Canada Games Pool/ Centennial Centre site or continue to be offered in a

standalone facility. “We didn’t realize there was a limit to the number of surveys we could receive during the survey program. For the first time in the city’s history we essentially broke the survey by having too many responses. We had

to upgrade our subscription to allow more people to fill out the survey,” said Mayor Jonathan Cote. “To us, that’s excellent news because that means that people are really interested in the topic.” While the city has re-

Up Front MAYOR ON THE MOVE

He walks the talk on urban living Family is still sold on living downtown By Theresa McManus

tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca

Mayor Jonathan Cote is becoming a bit of a poster child for urban living in the Lower Mainland. Cote was one of the presenters at the recent TEDxStanleyPark speaking series at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, which aims to inspire attendees with high-impact talks and empower them with practical calls to action. The topic? The future of cities and the impact transportation has on them. “It was really trying to take a futuristic look into the cities of the future and saying how our decisions about transportation, how driverless cars get integrated into our communities, how we advance public transit – if it’s a priority, if it’s not a priority – and how all those different transportation choices will actually be the driving forces that ultimately decide what our cities look and feel like in the future,” he said. “It was really essentially trying to say that we have a unique opportunity with new technologies, with how vehicles are being used with the shared technologies, with advancements and even an interest in walking to actually look at cities a lot differently than we have in the last 50 to 100 years and actually start look at designing our cities more around people than simply around transportation infrastructure like cars and public transit, but really focus on how we build our cities around people.” Cote said it was an “incredible opportunity” to be invited to speak at TEDxStanleyPark about a topic he’s passionate about in front of 2,000 people. Modacity, a Vancouverbased blog promoting the public-health, environmental and social benefits of walking, cycling, and public transit, featured Cote on a recent podcast. The segment touched on the City

CONDO FOR FIVE: Mayor Jonathan Cote and wife Alix pose with daughters Violet, Leah and Renee in their former downtown condo in 2015. They’re currently renting a

home in Queen’s Park while they wait for their new condo – a four-bedroom created by combining two two-bedroom units – to be finished. Cote has been sharing his thoughts on urban living in a number of public forums, including a TEDxStanleyPark talk and an appearance on Modacity’s The Strait and Narrows podcast. PHOTO RECORD FILES

of Vancouver’s decision not to allow the highway to go through its downtown many years ago, and segued into efforts being undertaken in New Westminster to create a walkable sustainable community.

They were particularly interested in my own personal decisions

“They were particularly interested in my own personal decisions,” said Cote, who has made a home in downtown New West with his wife and three daugh-

ters. “I think they probably came up with some Record articles about my condo living with the family. They were quite fascinated with my experiences of raising a family in a more urban environment, as opposed to your more suburban environment.” After living in a threebedroom condo on Columbia Street for the past few years, Cote and his family will soon be on the move. “We have actually bought a new place – we probably bought it five years ago, pre-construction,” he said. “We bought two two-bedroom units and put them together.” The new four-bedroom condo, also located in the downtown, was scheduled to be complete last fall. Because they’d already sold their three-bed-

room condo, the Cotes have been renting a house in the Queen’s Park neighbourhood until they can move into their new home in May. “We are renting a house that’s a block away from where we used to live in Queen’s Park. It’s been kind of nice to get back in the Queen’s Park neighbourhood, which is obviously a very lovely neighbourhood,” Cote said. “But there is aspects that we do miss about downtown – how close all the shops were, how close the SkyTrain was to jump on there. We do find that we are driving our car a lot more than we were when we were living downtown. Even though we are really only living 10 blocks up the hill, it’s just a little bit different in terms of where we are located. We are en-

joying our temporary visit back to Queen’s Park, but we are eager to get back downtown New West.” Cote said his family loves the urban experience of living downtown, but worried that the 1,400-squarefoot three-bedroom condo would become a bit cramped as his daughters got a bit older. “Looking at where the housing market has gone with single-family housing, the reality is even if that’s something we wanted to do, it’s not within our financial means,”

he said. “We started to say, what other options do we have? We were initially thinking townhouses, but there’s not a significant supply of townhouses that were meeting our needs. Somehow the idea came up. Since it was pre-construction, they were able to move a couple of walls and change the unit a little bit. It will be a four bedroom. We are excited about that. Everyone will have their own room. They are getting to that age where it’s probably a good thing.”

Where and when to see the mayor in action: ! Cote’s TEDxStanleyPark presentation will be posted on Youtube on April 7. ! Cote’s appearance on Modacity’s The Strait and Narrows podcast – Episode 3: From A to B, can be found at www.modacity.ife.com/the-strait-andnarrows.

New Westminster is moving forward with plans to fill in a gap in the Rotary Crosstown Greenway. Improvements are being undertaken on the section of the greenway on Seventh Avenue between Fifth and Eighth streets. The city’s goal is to make it safer, more comfortable and more convenient for people of all ages and abilities who are walking and cycling along the greenway. “We have always had this really great greenway across Seventh Avenue in the City of New Westminster, but there’s one area, between Eighth Street and Fifth Street, where there is absolutely no treatment or no continuation,” said Mayor Jonathan Cote. “When you are riding your bike in that area, you suddenly feel you are off the greenway in that one small section right in the middle. It’s always been seen

as a missing gap in what I would say is our premiere greenway across the city.” The city considered two options, with both including one-way, protected bike lanes; one option included vehicle parking on both sides of the street and the other had parking on the south side of the street. “The option that has been supported by council is 1b, which retains as much parking as possible on both sides of the street,” said Lisa Leblanc, the city’s manager of transportation. The project’s budget is $125,000, which includes partial resurfacing of the road, line markings and signage. The city hopes to recoup half of this investment through a Bike B.C. grant. “I think it’s important. If we want to promote this as one of the two top major greenways across the city then, we need to complete that network,” Cote said.

Opinion OUR VIEW

Privatizing airports is a very bad idea Who has ever made their way through a busy airport and thought, “Gee, what this place needs is a middleman looking to add a profit margin?” But that’s essentially what’s on the table. With big spending promises to live up to, the federal Liberals are looking at putting Canada’s ports and airports up in a yard sale. While we understand

the need to find revenues, we’re highly skeptical of the potential to privatize these essential Canadian assets. Ports, like the Port of Vancouver, already generate revenue for the federal coffers through rents from terminal tenants and fees extracted from shippers. And the taxes and fees collected by Canada’s airport authorities are already among the highest

...we’d get a series of monopolies – ones that operate with even less accountability to the public ... in the world. With shareholders to please or a bottom line to burnish, privatizations are almost always followed by corner cutting, contracting out or budget cuts

that impact service. And the laudable goals that come with privatization like innovation and lower prices for consumers are dependent upon there being stiff compe-

tition. Instead, we’d get a series of monopolies – ones that operate with even less accountability to the public than what we’ve already got. Rough as the relationship has been between some residents and the Port of Vancouver, it could be a boatload worse if the governance model is tweaked in favour of private investors. The port’s mandate is

to facilitate the trade on which Canada’s economy is based. There’s no guarantee a private owner would share that interest. When it comes to our ports, both air and sea, we’d prefer to keep our own names on the baggage. – Guest editorial from the North Shore News

MY VIEW KEITH BALDREY

Outgoing MLAs wrap up careers There were plenty of tears and laughter (and some relief) on hand last week as 14 MLAs spent their last day on the job in the provincial legislature. But while all of them should be congratulated on their public service, a few stood out for their unique contributions to the political process. First of all, the legislature’s only elected Independent MLA.Vicki Huntington has represented Delta South for two terms, and she brought a measure of non-partisanship that was sorely needed in an often bruising chamber. On the Opposition side, veteran Surrey MLA Sue Hammell – who had been a cabinet minister in the NDP government of the 1990s – seemed one of the few in the NDP caucus who wasn’t psychologically wounded by the party’s disastrous and unexpected election loss in 2013. On the government side, it was clear Dr. Moira Stillwell, fromVancouver-Langara, was going nowhere fast under the leadership of Christy Clark, as a result of a falling out between the two that occurred before the 2013 election. And Gord Hogg, from Surrey-White Rock, had already served 16 years and was obviously ready to move on to a new adventure. The one MLA from either side who will be greatly missed for a variety of reasons, however, is another veteran: the irascible, blunt,

straight-shooting Bill Bennett from the Kootenays. In his 16 years in office, Bennett had carved out a reputation for speaking his mind, no matter if it occasionally landed him in hot water. He kicked any “message box” to the curb, even if it meant the odd politically incorrect utterance or a statement that might put him on the outs with his own side. But it was Bennett’s epic takedown of former B.C. Liberal premier Gordon Campbell that thrust him into legendary status when it comes to B.C. political lore. After being booted from cabinet for criticizing Campbell’s leadership (his cellphone and government credit card were even taken away) he borrowed cash to fly back toVictoria to clean out his office and, more importantly, hold a scrum with the press gallery. He let rip a 36-minute denunciation of Campbell’s leadership and personality.Word spread throughout the legislature, and people poured out of their offices to witness the drama. After that performance, it was pretty clear Campbell’s days as leader were numbered. There’s no question Bennett will be missed big-time by Clark if she proves victorious on May 9. MLAs come and go every election cycle, but filling the shoes of the Sage of the Kootenays may prove to be a tough task. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

Opinion INBOX

Arcade could be a real addition to fun in city

How the health-care system saved his life

Dear Editor: It is disappointing, to say the least, that poor Brad Eyres will not be allowed to set up a retro-style arcade in our fair city. Much has changed in the almost 20 years since the city has restricted these entertaining destinations. Kids nowadays can simply whip out their mobile devices and play whatever game they want wherever they want. But it’s not the same. What Mr. Eyres seems to be proposing is more of a museum for these vintage games, and a damn fun museum, I might add. I would be happy to frequent such a worthy display of old school memorabilia, which in turn would make us old farts feel like kids again! Really, who didn’t love playing Frogger or Asteroids or Galaga? Those were games of skill and reaction and zero violence … unlike some of today’s abhorrently graphic and distasteful “games.” Sure the city wants to “get it right,” but how about “get it done.” Parents (like me) could have a great day out gaming and reminiscing and even showing our own kids a little part of our digital history. Al Hurd, New Westminster

Dear Editor: On Sunday, Jan. 29, I developed a severe pain in my chest. My wife phoned 911. Within minutes paramedics had arrived, proceeded to give me a cardiogram, check my blood pressure, hook me up to an IV and tell me I was having a heart attack. They contacted Royal Columbian Hospital to arrange my preadmission and to have staff in the operating room. By the time we got to the hospital, the paramedics had done all the paperwork and took me directly to the operating room, where the medical team took over. From the 911 call to the post-.op bed couldn’t have been more than an hour. I know health-care workers are well trained, but the efficiency, professionalism and courtesy I experienced was truly impressive. I was lucky there were paramedics close by, and lucky I was close to the Royal Columbian Hospital. I was lucky that a team was ready in the operating room. But the real luck is that I live in a country where we have access to excellent medical care. Left on my own, without the 911 call, I don’t think I would be writing this note. EXCITING NEWS! Dr. Ann Lu

Site cleared, but will plan get green light? By Theresa McManus

tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca

A site in the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood has been cleared with the hope that city council will approve its project. On March 27, New Westminster city council will hold a public hearing to consider a rezoning application that will allow Calvary Worship Centre and John Knox Christian School to share a building and parking at 260 12th St. A staff report states the school would have up to 450 students and 30 staff and the sanctuary of the worship centre would hold up to 250 people. After reading about the public hearing, an area resident contacted the Record to question whether the public hearing is “just for show” as the existing building has already been demolished and the site has already been cleared. Jackie Teed, the city’s acting director of development service, said a demolition permit was issued for the property on Feb. 20. She said a property owner can apply for a demolition of their building at any

time, regardless of whether or not they have another application under review by the city. “Applicants undergoing rezoning are told that if they proceed with demolition before council has approved their application, it is at their own risk, as council has the authority to reject their application for any reason,” she said in an email to the Record. “Whether or not an applicant’s existing building has been demolished is not something that staff includes as information for council to consider in their deliberation.” Following the March 27 public hearing, city council will decide whether to give third reading to the rezoning bylaw. Final approval comes at a later date. Teed said the development services department is proud of its record in having applications approved before council. Before applicants are taken to council for their first review, she said staff work with the applicants to ensure their proposal is keeping with city regulations and policies and is a good project overall for the city.

HAPPY CLIENT COMMENTS:

I worked primarily with Lyle in buying my first condo unit. In my experience, he was able to properly inform me of the blunt realities of today’s aggressive GVR housing market while still maintaining a low-pressure approach that respected my priorities and boundaries - even when my perspective wasn’t necessarily realistic. Both Lyle and Sandy struck me as keenly knowledgeable and perceptive: I remember marveling as they cruised through two apartment units, pointing out a stunning assortment of features big and small, dissecting their details and expounding upon their greater significance like art historians at the National Gallery.

My advice, if you’re like me and just starting off in this real estate stuff, is to make the most of this strength of theirs. They are remarkably friendly and responsive: ask them all the questions you can, big picture and minutiae. Buying real estate is emotional and you can easily get swept away by it all - it is essential as a real estate rookie that you get smarter and make informed, clinical decisions. I have every confidence that Lyle and Sandy can and do ensure that for their clients. -Simon Cheung

City ‘Bubble’ building still being looked at for Arenex Continued from page 1 the Canada Games Pool. By the end of this year we want that project to be a little more advanced from an architectural point of view. Obviously it makes a difference if we are having an architect draw a design for a pool or if we are trying to combine the program with the Arenex.” The roof of the Queen’s Park Arenex collapsed on Dec. 19, destroying the building that housed a wide range of city programs, including gymnastics, trampoline, children’s drop-ins and badminton. The city has made arrangements to offer many of those programs temporarily at a variety of locations, including the Vancouver Circus School, the Massey gym at New Westminster Secondary School and Queensborough and Glenbrook middle schools. “It is anticipated that all temporarily relocated services will be funded within

It (the bubble structure) definitely looks like an attractive option, but I know staff want to make sure they are doing their due diligence.

the existing Queen’s Park Arenex operational budget,” said a staff report to council. “If expenses are incurred that exceed operating costs at the former Arenex site, there may be coverage through the city’s insurance policy pending approval by the insurer.” Meanwhile, parks and recreation staff continue

to explore the possibility of accommodating Arenex programs in a clear-span fabric structure – known as a bubble – until a permanent replacement is built. Cote said staff has been doing a lot of research about the costs, longevity and operational constraints. A staff report is expected to be complete within the next month. “Those types of bubble structures, they do come with some significant costs, but at least our initial look at it is it would provide us the time to plan the future state of the Arenex, whether it’s in the Canada Games Pool or a standalone facility, to do that right as opposed to having to make a rushed decision about that,” he said. “It definitely looks like an attractive option, but I know staff want to make sure they are doing their due diligence.”

Body recovered from river A body was recovered from the Fraser River last Thursday following a search that lasted nearly two hours. Around 1 p.m., the Canadian Coast Guard rescue dive team got a call from the New Westminster Police Department asking for help finding a person who’d gone missing in the Fraser River near Sapperton Landing.

Officers told the coast guard the person had left Royal Columbian Hospital and walked into the water and disappeared, according to Dan Bate with Fisheries and Oceans Canada Pacific Region and Canadian Coast Guard. “Local resources were having difficulty searching the area due to the shallow

depth,” Bate wrote in an email to the Record. The person was found deceased a short while later. Calls to the New Westminster Police Department for further details have not been returned. – By Cayley Dobie, staff reporter

LitFest branches out into the community Lit café events and children’s workshops are among the new offerings for the readers’ and writers’ festival Julie MacLellan

jmaclellan@newwestrecord.ca

Janice Bannister doesn’t want people to hear the name “LitFest NewWest” and assume the festival is for someone else. Someone, well, literary. She’s hoping some new events and new locations will help to encourage all sorts of folks to turn out for this year’s festival, which runs from March 31 to April 2. “Our theme is reader, writer and community,” said Bannister, who’s chairing this year’s events. “It’s not just for writers.” The seventh annual festival has evolved from basically a book fair to being an all-encompassing event featuring workshops, readings, discussions and – new this year – kids’ programming. Rather than having the events centre in one location, which in the past has been Douglas College, the festival is branching out to a variety of different locations around town. Bannister said the change stemmed from

feedback from past years’ attendees, who suggested they’d like to see smaller, more intimate settings for the festival’s various events. The festival kicks off with an opening event on Friday, March 31 at NewWestminster Public Library, a live podcast taping for Pop This!, a pop culture podcast by Lisa Christiansen and AndreaWarner. They’ll be in conversation with acclaimed NewWest author JJ Lee. On Saturday, April 1, the festival moves out to River Market, where two kids’ workshops are being held – one at 11 a.m. with children’s author Grayson Smith, and one at 1 p.m. with kids’ author-illustrator Lee Edward Födi. Bannister notes the festival has added the kids’ programming to acknowledge the fact that the makeup of NewWest is changing. “We’ve got a lot of young moms in NewWest, a lot of young families,” she pointed out. 6:00 pm on March 27, 2017 in Council Chamber City Hall, 511 Royal Avenue, New Westminster ZONING AMENDMENT BYLAW NO. 7905, 2017 FOR 260 TWELFTH STREET (REZ00107) FOR CALVARY WORSHIP CENTRE AND JOHN KNOX CHRISTIAN SCHOOL PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A proposal has been submitted to allow a development in which the Calvary Worship Centre and John Knox Christian School (outlined in bold on the adjacent map) share the building and parking. The school would have up to 450 students and 45 staff. The sanctuary of the worship centre would hold up to 250 people.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The City of New Westminster is undertaking site preparation work for a proposed six-unit, affordable housing development at 43 Hastings Street and the adjacent road allowance (shown outlined in bold on the adjacent map). Currently, the road allowance is unzoned and it is the City’s practice to have zoning on all parcels. As such, Council is formally considering providing a zone for the unzoned road allowance with the intent of eventually consolidating it with the 43 Hastings Street property.

WHAT IS REZONING NUMBER 00107 ABOUT? Zoning Amendment Bylaw 7905, 2017 would establish the Comprehensive Development District (260 Twelfth Street) (CD-68) Zone and rezone the site from Public and Institutional Districts (Medium Rise) (P-2) to Comprehensive Development Districts (260 Twelfth Street) (CD-68) Zone.

WHAT IS REZONING NUMBER 00126 ABOUT? Zoning Amendment Bylaw (Hastings Street Unzoned Right of Way) No. 7899, 2017 would zone the unzoned road allowance to RS-2 (Single Detached Dwelling District).

You create new audiences because people are like, ‘Hey, that’s just down the street from me’. in which local writers share work from some of their favourite authors – at the library. Bannister is hoping that

holding events in new locations – especially favourite food and beverage spots – will encourage more people to turn out and check out

the festival. “You create new audiences because people are like, ‘Hey, that’s just down the street from me,’” she pointed out. Since most of the venues also allow people to just sit and mingle over food and beverages as they listen or take part, she’s also hoping that the events allow people to meet neighbours and

make new connections in the city. “If anything, community meets community,” she said. “That’s one of the things about having it in new locations.” Everything is free, except for the ticketed Pop This! podcast taping, which costs $10. Some events require advance registration. See www.litfestnewwest.com.

ven with today’s modern dentistry practices, some patients still harbour fears about being in the dentist’s chair. Ironically, by delaying a regular check-up or ignoring a recurring toothache, they allow the issue to become something that requires more time in the chair. ““Prevention is key,” says Dr. Stuart Katz from his office in Burnaby Square. “It keeps little problems from becoming big, expensive, painful problems.” After 20 years practicing, Dr. Katz knows that frequent check-ups and careful at-home care solve most dental issues before they even start. He empathizes with patients, hoping to ease their anxiety. Otherwise, patients might wait until there’s a problem before receiving adequate treatment and advice. Dr. Katz and his team of hygienists are “very approachable,” taking time to thoroughly analyse each patient’s situation, create a relevant course of treatment, and help the patient to continue treating themselves once home. Alas, Dr. Katz understands that even the kindest words cannot calm a very nervous patient. “We can certainly offer sedation to help patients relax,” he

French speech contest at Glenbrook in April Cayley Dobie CLASS ACT

cdobie@newwestrecord.ca

French immersion students in New Westminster will show off their oratorical prowess at the district Concours d’art oratoire in April. The French public speaking contest is organized each year by Canadian Parents for French chapters across the country. Early and late immersion students prepare a three- to five-minute speech on a topic of their choice and present it to a panel of judges. The concours is open to students in grades 6 to 12 who are typically chosen following a classroom competition. The winners of the local competition will continue on to the provincials held on May 6 at SFU’s Surrey campus. The top Grade 12 students at the provincials move on to the national event in Gatineau,

Que., in June. An estimated 85,000 students participate each year, according to Canadian Parents for French. (Believe it or not, I participated in the concours seven of the 13 years I spent in French immersion. It was definitely a highlight.) The New Westminster district competition is taking place in the gym at École Glenbrook Middle School on Tuesday, April 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. Parents, students, peers and family members are invited to attend. SIGN UP FOR TINYPRENEURS Registration is now open for the Tinypreneurs event happening in June. Kids as young as seven years old (and up to 17) are welcome to take part in the daylong entrepreneurial fair. They are asked to come to the event with a business idea – something as sim-

ple as a lemonade stand or an idea to help their family’s business. Then they will get a chance to sell their products or promote their business, and they have a chance at winning $1,000. “Our goal is to plant the seed that will encourage children not only to imagine their first business venture, but also to create the space to integrate the lessons of earning money from their own efforts associated with the pursuit of social responsibility toward maintaining a sustainable environment and being sensitive to the well-being of humanity and communities as a whole,” read a notice on the Tinypreneurs’ website. Tinypreneurs is planned for June 3 starting at 11 a.m. at the New Westminster waterfront near the Fraser River Discovery Centre. For more info and to register, go to www.tinypreneurs. com.

LETHAL DRUGS ARE out there

Find out how you can save a life.

To the Theatre!

Every day, people are losing their lives to overdoses in BC. These deaths are preventable. Many illegal drugs, including party drugs, have been found to contain deadly fentanyl. And even more toxic carfentanil is now being detected in BC. Not using drugs is the best defence — using alone is the greatest risk. If you use drugs or know someone who does, help is available. Learn about treatment, and where to find naloxone and overdose prevention sites in your area by calling 8-1-1 or visiting www.gov.bc.ca/overdose. Your knowledge, compassion and action can save a life.

The Massey Theatre opened its doors in 1949. Since then its lights have shone on thousands of performances and the Massey has become a cherished space to experience the arts in New Westminster. Massey Theatre hosts plays, international music and dance forms, children’s entertainers, orchestras, choirs, ballets, stars of music and more. This April, the Massey plays host to New West’s own Royal City Musical Theatre’s production of the Cole Porter classic, Anything Goes. Looking for personalized reading recommendations from library staff? The New Westminster Public Library has you covered. We have a Staff Picks program that will help you find your next favourite read whether you are in the library or at home. At the library, look for our blue Staff Picks stickers. Library staff members have placed these on books they have particularly enjoyed. We also have shelf tags in the fiction stacks recommending favourite authors, and suggestions of similar authors. When you’ve read everything by an author you adore, or want to expand your reading horizons, our suggestions can help.

Staff picks are just one of the ways library staff share our love of reading with you, so ask us for recommendations in person. You might cross paths with a staff member who’s recommended something you’ve loved – strike up a conversation. It might take a few minutes for us to find something for you, but we do our best to make it worth the wait.We use your interests to guide our selections and it’s great to find out what’s popular with our community. Not every book will be a perfect fit for every reader, but we sure have fun trying.

At home or unable to get here? You can still get recommendations from us online. We have a Staff Picks page in our BiblioCommons catalogue, with links to lists we’ve created. These lists can be personal favourites or a selection of books on a particular topic of interest, and are updated as we find new titles to recommend. You can also make your own lists in BiblioCommons – just ask us how. It’s a great way to share what you love with other library users, and with us.

Business Struggles, successes of small biz to be chronicled Continued from page 31 11th Street. “I see people going in and out of their loading bay all the time so I thought (making this documentary) would be great opportunity to get to know my neighbours.” Falkiner, who has worked in a variety of roles on film and television productions for 16 years, enrolled in the course to improve her technical skills. She approached the Lamberts about the documentary idea in February, having stumbled on Victoria’s Instagram feed a few years ago. Falkiner and Jung recently documented an average day at The FAT Paint Company’s shop, which includes everything from mixing the paint to packaging and labeling products that are distributed across North America. Once the editing process wraps up in March, the documentary will be posted onYouTube and shared on The FAT Paint Company’s social media

After that space was destroyed by a fire in October 2013, the entrepreneurial brotherand-sister duo relocated the business to its current home at #140-131 11th St. Victoria said she was excited when Falkiner first approached her about the

project, seeing it as an opportunity to support a local student and to share her and her brother’s vision for FAT Paint with a wider audience. “Bradford and I have always been deeply committed to our community, helping people out in whatever capacity we can,” she said in a news release. “At lot of people helped us get to where we are today, so we take the opportunity to give back whenever we can.”

’Bellies load up in goal

By signing Belanger, NewWest has three legitimateWLA stoppers for camp Dan Olson

dolson@newwestrecord.ca

You can never have enough of a good thing. It’s a logical conclusion, and one Vancouver Stealth netminder Tye Belanger would endorse – especially when it comes to playing time. The 26-year-old goalie is a big reason the Stealth are battling for a playoff spot in the National Lacrosse League, as he’s taken on the bulk of the crease work the past month. He’s also looking forward to re-establishing his position between the pipes this summer in the Western Lacrosse Association, after signing with the New Westminster Salmonbellies this week. “I spent (what) seems like five, six years as a backup goalie, paying my dues and learning my way from guys I’m behind,” said Belanger, of both his NLL and WLA track record. “You learn from them, how they manage the workload, success and a work ethic.” Belanger, who has been one of the Stealth’s standouts over the past month, will battle Alex Buque and Eric Penney in New West’s camp for playing time when the NLL season comes to an end. After being released early last season by the Burnaby Lakers, Belanger said he’s motivated and eager to win the ’Bellies starting role and help them get to the next level. “Last year, being dropped by Burnaby was a shock and came out of the blue,” the Wallaceburg, Ont. native said. “I went on and had fun playing senior B in Langley, but I really want to get back (to the WLA).The quality of shooters is that much better. “New West is a proven organization with a goal of pushing for a Mann Cup, and that’s what I want to contribute to.” Two years ago in Burnaby, Belanger went 8-7 with a 7.85 goals against average. It earned him a spot on the WLA second all-star team – while Penney was the first all-star team netminder. With Vancouver this year, Belanger has set a new NLL personal best for minutes played with 494 so far, to go with an 11.04 goals against average and .794 save percentage. Penney is currently Vancouver’s third netminder, and Belanger knows Buque from past years. All three are former Brampton Excelsiors property, the organization New West had to go through to ink Belanger. Continued on page 34

Royals absorb peaks, valleys at nats

Douglas College displays gutsy effort at hoop nationals en route to fifth-place finish Dan Olson

dolson@newwestrecord.ca

Pouring their hearts into the final game of the year, the Douglas College Royals could be excused for crumbling just a bit following Saturday’s 64-62 loss to the Northern Alberta Institute Ooks. In what was decided in the last second, the punctuation mark on a successful season won’t need any asterisk after the Royals put forth a strong effort over three days at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s women’s national basketball championships. What they absorbed over the three days was a steep learning curve, complete with heady highs and bottom-drawer lows. “The first game was just an eye-opener and something that really demonstrated how big a transition it is from provincial to national play,” Douglas head coach Steve Beauchamp said. “There are always things you can’t plan for, you need to adapt when things don’t go as planned. I think our goal going in was to be sure they enjoyed the expe-

rience but also be serious about what we were trying to achieve.” After a rattling 99-44 loss to the Lethbridge Kodiaks in their first game, the Royals turned the page and regrouped against the Mount St.Vincent Mystics of the Atlantic Conference, busting open a two-point game with a 15-0 run in the second quarter en route to a 78-60 win. Rachel Beauchamp scored 22 points and reeled in 16 rebounds, while Ellen Fallis contributed 19 points and Sarah Jorgenson netted 15 points and four blocks. Unlike the game against the eventual national champion Kodiaks, Douglas dominated the boards and shot 51.7 per cent in free throws. “We came out quite well (against Mount St.Vincent) and I think we felt that second quarter, where we held them to six points, was where we played our best,” said the coach. “Mount St. Vincent battled back, and I think the consensus we got from those first two games was all the teams were quality. They all deserved to be here.” That set up the showdown

against the Ooks with a spot in the bronze medal game at stake. Trailing by three after one quarter, the Royals again held the opposition to just six points in the second quarter and gained the upper hand with a 33-26 lead entering the second half. But the Northern Alberta hosts ramped it up and pulled ahead by 11 points before a final Royal rally saw Jorgenson nail backto-back buckets and Adelia Paul sink two free throws to make it 62-62 with 2:12 remaining. After missing a few chances to break the stalemate, Douglas saw the game turn in the final 15 seconds as the Ooks took possession and got it down the floor, with Jordan Enns hitting a jump shot with one second left on the clock. “We had two, maybe three good opportunities, good looks that didn’t fall for us,” remarked coach Beauchamp of the last minute. “(After Enns’ scored) we called a time-out and got the ball inbounds and had a jump shot but it just didn’t fall. … There were a few tears, for sure.” Rachel Beauchamp, the

coach’s daughter, tallied 10 points and six rebounds en route to a first team all-star honour and All-Canadian selection. Simran Bir came off the bench and led all Douglas shooters with 16 points, while Jorgenson chipped in 13 points. Two players – Garaline Tom and Paul – exit the program after five years with some great memories. Paul, a team captain, established a new PacWest record for career assists, accumulating 317 over five seasons. New Westminster’s Jettie McLaughlin, meanwhile, is a fourth-year player who is completing her degree and has indicated she will be moving on. “It was emotional for the three, for their teammates, after the (NAIT) game,” said coach Beauchamp. “We really focused on getting to the bronze game, so there was disappointment, but I think when they look back on what they accomplished, getting to nationals and knowing there’s a (provincial) banner in the gym that they contributed to, that’s something to take pride in.”

New champs in u18 curling

Team Drexel and Team Tardi will achieve a first when they travel to Moncton, N.B., to represent B.C. at the nationals in April. That’s because they won the B.C. under18 curling championships in its inaugural year for curlers 17 and under played last week in Nanaimo. Team Drexel, who count Coquitlam, Cloverdale and Chilliwack as home base, struck gold for the third year in a row, following on the heels of the 2015 B.C. juvenile and 2016 B.C.Winter Games titles. Drexel went unbeaten in its pool en route to a final 5-2 victory over Team Connor of Prince George. Langley Curling Club’s Tyler Tardi and Sterling Middleton, of Burnaby, were joined by the Victoria duo of Scott Gray and Derek Chandler for an unstoppable foursome in the u18 boys division. A perfect run through the round robin and playoffs was capped with a 7-3 win over Team Raber, from Vernon and Salmon Arm.

Vernon’s Team Love won the bronze medal after an 8-4 decision over the Royal City Curling Club/Cloverdale’s Team Sato, which includes skip Hayato Sato, third Dawson Ballard, second Joshua Miki and lead Troy Chong.

GOALIE GAME FOR COMPETITION Continued from page 33 New West general manager Dan Richardson said a crowded crease for the preseason, and possibly for the start of the year, will be beneficial in the long run. “I think it’s very important to have competition at every position, and (Belanger) has shown, not only with the Stealth, that he is capable of being a good (WLA) goaltender,” said Richardson. The Stealth travel to Toronto this weekend for the first in a home-and-home series with the Rock (continuing March 31 at the Langley Events Centre).

OBITUARIES

KATHLER, Mary (Molly) (Welch, Faulkner)

September 1919 - February 2017 It is with much sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Mother Mary (Molly) Kathler (Welch Faulkner) on February 27, 2017.

MORAN, James

April 8, 1928 - February 8, 2017 Sadly we announce the passing of James (Jim) Moran, age 88, at Lions Gate Hospital. A loving husband, father & grandfather, he is survived by his wife Mable, daughters Paddy, Leah & Tara, sister Irene (Ian), six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. He is predeceased by his son Brent, brothers Ray and Earl, and sisters Chris and Evelyn. Born in Calgary, Jim moved to New Westminster as a young boy & graduated from TJ Trapp Tech where he also met Mable. They married in 1950 & five years later started their family. Jim worked briefly at the Fraser Mills Lumber Company before starting a successful career in the insurance industry, which later took him back to Calgary. In 1970, he returned to Vancouver with his family & resided first in Lions Bay and then in North Vancouver. Jim retired at age sixty and enjoyed many travels near and far with Mable and his family. Some of his favourites included Australia, New Zealand, Ireland & cruises to Alaska, South America & Europe. He also loved his annual road trips to Palm Desert & Whistler in one of his many Cadillacs. He was an avid reader and loved his pets Molly & Tomassina. He enjoyed walks with Molly at Ambleside, spending time at home, working in the yard and feeding his many feathered friends. Jim was a kind, gentle, humble and compassionate man. He gave generously & in his quiet, unassuming way, exemplified everything a wonderful & supportive husband, father, friend & neighbour could be. Jim will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched. Without him, the world will be a little emptier and the heavens a little brighter.

Molly was predeceased by her son Howard Welch in 2005 and her husband George in 2010. She will be lovingly remembered by her son Fred, her daughter Lyn Girard, husband Maurice and grandson Brad, and Molly’s first husband Charles Welch, Victoria, BC, cousin Enid and many nephews and nieces in Washington and California. She will be missed by her friends and co-workers in Burnaby where she volunteered for over 30 years at the Confederation Centre, and by her friends at Ingleton Place where she resided until her passing. Family gathering at a later date. No service by request. “God’s Greatest Gift” Remembrance.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.

Excellent dentists and staff! If you are looking for a dentist or hygienist I would highly recommend Life Dental.

Very modern, and professional. Amazing service, simply the best. My teeth and I are very happy! Thanks :)

Amazing, best dentist I have ever seen. Polite, professional, very helpful. I was blown away by the quality of service and level of compassion. Highly recommended.

I always have such a nice and comfortable experience at Life Dental. All the staff are so friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend giving them a try.
