ON THE BRINK:
Poet Kevin Spenst and artist-art therapist Shauna Kaendo rehearse their collaborative performance work i love you. i’m uncomfortable at the New Media Gallery. They’re presenting the work as part of LitFest New West this Saturday, April 1, from 2 to 3 p.m. The work “unfolds around the intersections of movement, expectations, uncertainties, trust and the balance we try to find – and keep – amidst our impossibly complex relations.” The two artists are seen here with Jacob Tonski’s Balance From Within (2012), part of the ongoing BRINK exhibition at the gallery. May suite dress change triggers backlash Changing 147-year-old traditions in this city is not as easy as changing clothes – particularly these ones cdobie@newwestrecord.ca
Passions have been ignited over changes to a 147year tradition unique to the Royal City.
About 20 people descended on Tuesday’s school board meeting to plead with trustees to reverse its decision to have the Royal Suite wear floral dresses lined with crinoline
and topped with a white bolero and short white gloves at this year’s May Day celebrations. Instead, parents, students and past May Queens want the girls to don the tradi-
tional white dresses and capes that have been a part of the annual event since 1870. “Both my daughter and I share our shock at the announcement at the parent

Up Front A CLOSER LOOK
A bird’s eye view – with limits One person’s fun hobby might be another’s fear of a loss of privacy By Theresa McManus
tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
A New Westminster man enjoys soaring through the skies – without ever leaving the ground. After more than a decade flying radio-controlled model aircraft, Brett Mineer purchased his first drone about a year ago. “I was also always into photography,” he said. “With these small unmanned aerial vehicles coming onto the market, it was a neat way for me to combine the two hobbies.” While Mineer has flown his drone at a school field in New Westminster, he said it’s not really an ideal – or completely legal – place to fly because of the presence of the helipad at Royal Columbian Hospital. “Here’s the thing: Often the most interesting places to photograph are the ones where you are not going to be allowed to fly. It’s difficult,” he said. “The federal government is actually responsible for the regulation of small, unmanned aerial vehicles, including so-called drones. Some of the rules they actually have set up mean that flying in New West isn’t really ideal.” Mayor Jonathan Cote recently received an email from a resident asking New Westminster to consider banning the personal use of drones or instituting stringent restrictions. “I recognize that when drones are used with care, they can be a terrific tool and provide a level of entertainment,” wrote the resident. “However, I feel far more strongly that our personal privacy, safety and security are very much at stake with this also exceptionally intrusive device.” Quayside resident Paul Thompson also had a close encounter with a drone last summer, when one was meandering above the Fraser River and the boardwalk before coming close to his balcony and darting away when it had been spotted. While he sees the value in drones as a means of taking videos of the river or finding people who are lost, he’s also concerned about privacy. Cote said some cities have looked into developing policies, as use of drones has become more widespread. Council referred the issue to

The local resident spent more than a decade flying radio-controlled model aircraft, and he says his drone has allowed him to combine that hobby with his love of photography. But no, he’s not using the drone to spy on anyone: Mineer says the small, remote-operated aerial vehicles aren’t a danger to personal privacy because most aren’t equipped with cameras with zoom lenses and are only useful for scenic shots. staff. Mineer, however, said residents have little to fear from drones as most aren’t equipped with cameras with zoom lenses. “A lot of the concerns about, say, spying are really overstated and paranoid. The systems that are out there just don’t have that ability,” he said. “What I would say about privacy concerns is while there is a lot of anxiety out there about being spied on by consumer drones, it’s not an actual problem that actually exists.” A former reporter, Mineer keeps up-to-date on the latest news about drones and radiocontrolled model aircraft. He’s unaware of a single prosecution in Canada for someone using a drone for voyeurism purposes. “They just don’t work for that purpose,” he said. “People would hear them. They use extremely wide-angle lenses because even
with the stabilization systems for the cameras, when you add a zoom lens the shot gets shaky and unusable.” Mineer said there’s only a few models on the market that are able to zoom in on an object, but those tend to be two-person setups for commercial filmmaking applications – and they cost thousands of dollars. “In general, I think people tend to overestimate how interesting their lives are,” he said. “I have been in places where I have been accused of spying. I was flying out in the middle of nowhere in Delta and this guy, you can actually see it on my video, this guy comes flying up the road from who knows where and says I was flying over his house, which is not true. I have a GPS map that shows it. I think with a lot of people, there is a lot of apprehension out there about these things. A lot of times, if peo-

Even drones have rules
Transport Canada has just introduced some new rules to protect Canadians from “reckless” drone use. According to the federal government, the number of incidents involving recreation drones has more than tripled since 2014. New rules, announced March 16, take effect immediately for the operation of model aircraft and

NOTICE TO CITY’S ELECTRIC UTILITY CUSTOMERS
City Council has adopted a rate structure that reflects the same rate increase implemented by BC Hydro. The new rates reflect an across-theboard 3.5% rate increase, effective April 1, 2017. Although both residential and commercial rates are being revised to reflect the same rate increase, the amount of any increase in monthly electricity bill will vary depending on the amount of energy used. The electricity bill for a residential household using 1,000 kWh per month will increase by $3.87 to $114.43 per month. Even with the new approved rates, the City’s residents will continue to enjoy, on average, one of the lowest electricity rates in North America.

WATERMAIN FLUSHING
As part of the City of New Westminster’s maintenance program, the flushing of the watermains in the areas located between 10th Avenue, McBride Boulevard, Royal Avenue, Stewardson Way and 23rd Street will occur from April 3rd to May 15th 2017. Flushing of the watermains is required to remove sediments and to maintain water quality. This may result in your water supply appearing cloudy due to the sediments. Since some staining of laundry may result and some industrial processes may be affected we recommend the following: • Run your cold water tap until the water clears up • Check the water supply before doing laundry
For more information on any of these events, please visit www.newwestcity.ca/events
If in doubt, please check the City’s website for daily updates on the streets being flushed or call the Water Department at 604-526-4691 between 7:00 am and 4:00 pm. Thank you for you cooperation.

THE CHANGING CITY
New school gets nod despite traffic concerns By Theresa McManus
tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
A proposed private high school has received a pass from New Westminster city council. John Knox Christian School is on course to open a new high school in New Westminster in 2018. New Westminster city council has given third reading to a zoning amendment bylaw for 260 12th St., which would allow John Knox Christian School and Calvary Worship Centre to build a school and sanctuary. The building could include up to 56,736 square feet (5,271 square metres) of space. “The school would have up to 450 students and 30 staff,” said Jackie Teed, the city’s acting director of development services. “The sanctuary of the worship centre would hold up to 250 people.” Principal Anne Ferguson told council the school took “a bit of a risk” by demolishing the building on the site before getting the city’s approval to build the school but did so after determining the land would be more valuable without the building on the site, regardless of council’s decision. Adam Isfeld, general manager of Key West Ford, attended Monday’s public hearing to voice concern that the development would be a “complete disaster” to the flow of traffic in the area. He expressed concern the project would
create safety issues because of the heavy traffic on 12th Street and neighbouring roads. “It is an accident waiting to happen,” he said of hundreds of students arriving and leaving the site each day. “We see accidents on Third and 12th all the time.” According to Ferguson,
what improvements may be needed. “I don’t think we should use those concerns to prevent the growth of the lower 12th neighbourhood. This is something that fits in the (area) plan,” he said. “I really appreciate the transportation-demand management measures the school is taking. I think that’s a really important aspect of developing schools in our community. We want to be a city where you can walk or use transit or alternate means to get to places where you are studying.” Coun. Chuck Puchmayr said the city needs to focus on ensuring the concerns raised by Key West Ford are addressed before the school is complete. He noted safety issues arose when Qayqayt Elementary School opened before the traffic plans around the site were complete. “That caused some issues with regards to safety, and we had to work quite quickly,” he said. “I want to make sure that this doesn’t happen again, that we have those in place and we really address the concerns that were brought forward today with regards to the safety of those children in that neighbourhood.” Coun. Mary Trentadue said she’s excited to see a successful, good-looking business going into the lower part of 12th Street. “I think the bottom of 12th Street has great potential,” she said.
I think the bottom of 12th Street has great potential
the school has staggered start times, so students arrive at different times of the day. She said the school is committed to dealing with students in a safe manner and hired Bunt and Associates to develop a transportation-demand management plan for the site that includes a designated pickup and drop-off space on site. According to the school’s website, there has been an “urgent need” for a new building to house its high school students for many years. The school is expected to open in September 2018. Coun. Patrick Johnstone said he’s cognizant of the concerns about safety and pedestrian access in the area but feels staff and the city’s advisory committees have time before the school is built to consider

Opinion OUR VIEW
Don’t mess with tradition in this city There should be bumper stickers for New West cars: “Don’t tread on our traditions.” It might come with a graphic of someone hanging onto an anvil. Perhaps we don’t defend them quite as boldly as our southern neighbours do their guns, but we take them pretty darn seriously. The latest example of this is the brouhaha over what kind of dresses the wee girls in the May Day Royal Suite
shall be wearing. For decades – perhaps even over a century – the girls have been clad in their virginal white outfits. Then, for some inexplicable reason, someone, or perhaps an entire dress rebellion squad, decided that white had to go. Now, there are different versions as to how this came about. Some say that in today’s “child-centred” world this was an effort to
allow the girls some sense of empowerment over their dress choices. Others say it was an economical choice. Others say it was an attempt to dilute a fine tradition just for the sake of modernizing the event. Still others suggest that it’s all part of a larger more insidious campaign to minimize traditional May Day events in the Royal City. There’s no doubt that May Day has its critics. It’s
a tradition that is based on – at the very least – oldfashioned patriarchal junk. But if we threw out every tradition based on that, there’d be very little left to mark or celebrate. Christmas is the biggest one that comes to mind. And while we’re on the subject, we might want to change Santa’s outfit. We’re thinking yoga pants and one of those new tuckless shirts would look a whole lot better. Not
to mention the elves’ outfits are truly horrendous – although leggings are making a comeback. Now, a reader at this point might suggest that we are making fun of the whole dress debacle. Well, we are, and we aren’t. Kind of like the “is this a blue-and-black dress or a white-and-gold dress” test last year (for those who missed it, just Google it). We treasure our own tra-
ditions, and whether they make sense in today’s world is, frankly, irrelevant. It’s the feelings that are embedded in these traditions that often tie us to our past and our community and make meaning out of life’s often chaotic twists and turns. If white dresses are an integral part of this one cherished tradition, one that would sorely be missed, then, indeed, let them wear white.
MY VIEW KEITH BALDREY
Will Clark jump on transit issue?
My email inbox has been flooded with about 100 spending announcements from the B.C. government the past few days, as money is being shovelled out of the door as the fiscal year draws to a close later this week. But a particular big ticket spending item has yet to arrive. For a while, it looked like it never would, but I expect to see it any day now. I’m referring, of course, to the question of whether the province will step up to the plate and finally agree to increase its share of funding to build badly needed transit lines in MetroVancouver: the Surrey light rail lines, and the Broadway subway line inVancouver. The feds are officially putting more than $2 billion (over a decade or so) on the table, and this has put the squeeze onVictoria to sweeten its offer. The B.C. government can hardly let this kind of cash contribution disappear, so I’m betting it will now undoubtedly revisit its longheld position that it would fund only one-third the costs of any project, with the feds and the municipal governments also contributing a third each. But Ottawa has upped its ante to 40 per cent and it can reasonably be assumed the provincial government will follow suit, thus reducing the municipal level share by a significant amount (still more than $1 billion, however). The province can hardly squawk about this. It spends a gargantuan amount of money on infrastructure –
about $4 billion annually on roads, highways, schools and hospitals – every year anyway, so being pressured to fork another $700 million or so (over a long period of time) hardly seems unreasonable. It’s a political no-brainer to end this game of chicken that has been going on for years. The provincial election is on the horizon, so what better time to court thousands of traffic-choked commuters? Big transit projects such as the Broadway subway line and Surrey light rail lines are also massive job creation vehicles, a fact that fits nicely in Premier Christy Clark’s political wheelhouse. Her re-election mantra is essentially “jobs, jobs, jobs,” and I can’t believe she’s going to give up a chance for a campaign stop at a potential Surrey construction site, with her trusty hard hat affixed firmly on her head as she beams for the television news cameras. As well, the NDP has already promised that if it is elected on May 9 it will increase its transit funding share to 40 per cent, so a move by Clark to do the same right now may neutralize the NDP’s position, which if left unmatched will be a popular one. Now that the Trudeau government has made the first move in a very clear way, the path is clear for the B.C. government to make the next one. My email inbox is awaiting the news. A how-not-to robbery
A 19-year-old Burnaby man’s attempt to rob the 7-Eleven store in the 900 block of 12th Street with a pellet gun didn’t go as smoothly as planned. First, the clerk refused to cooperate with his demand for money and fought him off. Then, after he jumped in a cab as his getaway vehicle, an alert passerby followed the taxi while calling police. Officers found the cab a short distance away and quickly arrested the teen and seized his pellet gun as well as some stolen cigarettes and lighters.

Opinion INBOX
Where do candidates’ real loyalties lie? Dear Editor: I recently corresponded with an acquaintance who is the political polar opposite of myself, and he commented that those running in the provincial election would do anything – including abandoning their party affiliations and convictions – to get themselves elected. After some thought, I had to conclude he was absolutely correct! Lorraine Brett, who has been a Conservative Party member and PC candidate (outside New West, I might add) all of a sudden finds religion in the Liberal Party. Jonina Campbell, a staunch defender and member of the NDP/DLC, as well as an elected NDP school trustee, has unexpectedly abandoned her party to see how she will look in Green should she be elected. Then we have our current MLA, Judy Darcy, who left her comrades in the Ontario Communist Party only to parachute into New West as an avowed NDP/DLC member. My question then is, “Who really are these people?” Clearly, even they are wrestling to find the answer. How can we be asked to elect people who have demonstrated no conviction, little integrity
and, perhaps more importantly, zero loyalty? If the candidates don’t understand themselves, they certainly can’t understand their constituents. No one in their right mind can go to an allcandidates meeting with these three and believe what they say. No matter who you vote for, you are not getting a real Liberal, a real NDP/DLC or a real Green representative. The only way to describe these three candidates is disingenuous and opportunistic. But who is to blame here? The ambitious, opportunistic candidates or their party executive? Once upon a time, candidates were vetted to ensure they lived the life and walked the walk of their party’s mandate. You knew who you were voting for and what they stood for. Today, these executives have failed in their fiduciary duty to put forth “real” party candidates for the citizens of New West to elect. For the first time in my voting life, I am considering staying home on Election Day unless an alternative “real” choice enters the race as an independent. Paul R. Thompson, New West JOIN THE CONVERSATION

Spring Into Action with #WALKNEWWEST
May Queen changes raise controversy
Continued from page 1 approved a request by the May Day task force to extend its consultation period to June 2017. She, like others at Tuesday’s meeting, thought the extension meant the annual celebration would remain status quo until the task force returned to the board of education with its recommendations. “I do not believe any one person or small group of people has the right to make a decision to entirely eliminate a significant component of a 147-year tradition without any prior public consultation,” she told trustees and staff. But associate superintendent Janet Grant said the decision was part of “a fluid process” that began in January when several longstanding volunteers on the May Day committee quit. This prompted Grant and the other members to revisit the event. It was during this discussion that the committee decided the Royal Suite would wear floral dresses, she said. “We vetted all those ideas through the task force, and then I shared it with the board and this is how we got on to this course that we’re on right now,” Grant told the Record. But Grant did not foresee the backlash she’d received regarding the dress change. “What I’ve realized is that there are some parents that are very, very passionate about having their children wear the traditional attire,” she said.
“We’ve always been saying you can wear the floral dress that the school district has provided or any other spring attire that you want to wear. …We’re providing options this year, where we’ve never really had options before, and we think that that’s important.” But this is the first time an option has been discussed. In a past press release, the district said the “traditional white attire will be refreshed with the girls wearing matching spring dresses.” There was no mention of a choice between the white dresses and capes and the new spring dresses. That’s because “this whole thing has been fluid and has evolved,” Grant said. “Back in the day, when we were generating these ideas, we didn’t anticipate the amount of passion and dedication to the traditional apparel. That was, to be honest, unanticipated to the extent that we see now.” If any girls in the Royal Suite want to wear the traditional outfits, they will have to speak with Grant about borrowing a cape from the district. They will be responsible for finding their own white dresses to go with it, Grant said. It’s unclear if the dress debate will be discussed by school trustees. Nothing was discussed or decided at Tuesday’s meeting, and it’s up to trustees to have the issue put on an agenda for an upcoming meeting. Any girls wanting to borrow a cape are asked to contact jgrant@sd40.bc.ca.

New project includes homes for aging artists By Theresa McManus
tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
Dancers, singers, musicians and other performing artists could be making a home for themselves in downtown New Westminster. Domus Homes is proposing to build a mixed-use development at 813 Carnarvon St., which would include 195 market residential units in 25 storeys built on top of commercial space that could include restaurant space and other retail. Using density bonus provisions, the project would also include 50 units of secured non-market rental housing for seniors in a separate six-storey building overseen by Performing Arts Lodges Vancouver. Architect Andrew Emmerson said the highrise has been placed on a part of the site that falls between the large towers located across
Boards at 1:45 every Sunday in April (excluding Easter Sunday)
the street at the SkyTrain station development. He said this placement maximizes daylight to the building and views of the Fraser River, and also creates green space for the non-market component of the project. Performing Arts Lodges Vancouver currently has more than 100 pre-screened people on a waiting list for housing at its 111-unit facility in Vancouver. Gary Glacken, executive director of PAL Vancouver and PAL Studio Theatre Society, said the project would assist seniors by proving them with safe, affordable housing but would also benefit the community at large as its residents would do things like host holiday-themed events and contribute to the performing arts through theatre, music and arts events.

City ‘New West is the next art mecca ...’ Continued from page 9 “We think as an organization that we can add great value to the community,” he said. Glacken said the proposed building includes a 600- to 700-square foot amenity space, and PAL would talk to local residents about how that space could be used. “I remember when PAL
was developed inVancouver. It was an amazing program, and I think it brought a lot to the community. It does a lot for the artist community,” said Coun. Mary Trentadue. “I personally think NewWest is the next art mecca in the Lower Mainland, so I am personally very happy to have you come.” On Monday, council received a preliminary report
about the rezoning application and provided staff with some direction on how to move forward with the density bonus, as the project’s floor space ratio is 7.75 and the allowable FSR is 5.2. “I think this is an appropriate area for high-density residential in downtown NewWestminster,” said Mayor Jonathan Cote. “The fact that we are including a

non-market rental housing does complement this project well. There are a series of steps between now and the approval process.” Coun. Remembering a battle that defined Canada RoyalWestminster Regiment representatives will be part of ceremonies markingVimy Ridge anniversary Theresa McManus
tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
Two representatives from the Royal Westminster Regiment will be joining folks from around the world at the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge. New West resident Terry Leith is among a Canadian contingent set to attend ceremonies to commemorate the First World War battle at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France and the National War Memorial in Ottawa. “It was one of the battles that basically defined the Canadian troops,” said Leith, who manages the Royal Westminster Regimental Association Museum in the Armory. “I believe it’s designated as Canadian soil where the national memorial is.They claim that during the Second World War Hitler posted guards there so it wouldn’t be destroyed.” Vimy Ridge, located in northern France, is Canada’s largest overseas national memorial. The monument was built in 1936 to commemorate the Battle of Vimy Ridge, which was from April 9 to 12, 1917. Leith is honoured to have been nominated by the Royal Westminster Regimental Association to attend the memorial celebrations and is proud to represent the Royal Westminster Regiment and its predecessor, the 47th Battalion (British Columbia). The regiment has a strong connection to Vimy Ridge, as acting Cpl. Filip Konowal was with the 47th Battalion during the

Battle at Vimy Ridge and the Battle of Hill 70.The New Westminster man received the Victoria Cross, the highest award in the United Kingdom honours system, for his bravery and leadership at Hill 70 in Lens in August 1917. “Because I manage the museum, I deal with a lot of this.We have lots of photographs and stuff like
that,” said Leith, who also serves as vice-president of the New Westminster Legion #2. “It’s going to be interesting. It probably will be emotional. I have never been over there. They say the memorial is just awesome.” Dave Cole, the city’s manager of engineering operations, has been a reserve member with the Ca-

There will be several ceremonies that will be in and around the area. It’s incredible. It’s an amazing honour,” said Cole, who
has never been to Vimy Ridge. “It means a lot to me as well because my great-grandfather died over there during World War I and his name is engraved on the Vimy memorial. I think it is going to be an amazing honour to stand up there where so many have fallen, and represent my unit here and the Canadian Forces.

Arts & Entertainment Vagabond Players delve into history with Vinci Before he was the Leonardo da Vinci who changed the world, he was just a child – and a child whose fate was in question. The early life of Leonardo is explored in a play by Maureen Hunter – and the Vagabond Players are bringing it to the stage at the end of this month. Vinci plays at the Bernie Legge Theatre in Queen’s Park from March 30 to April 23. It revolves around the life of the gifted child and who will be given custody of him: his peasant mother or his rich father? Padre Bar-
tolomeo, a friend of the da Vinci family, finds himself caught between the powerful family and Leonardo’s defiant unwed mother, the servant Caterina. Jeremy Heynen stars as Padre Bartolomeo and Catlin Corey Franks plays Piero, the headstrong friend whose precipitate actions cause heartache to the women who love him. Darby Steeves is onstage as Caterina, while Elizabeth Drummond appears as Albiera – Piero’s neglected wife who longs for a child. The cast is completed by
Dale Kelly as the da Vinci patriarch, Antonio, and Kyle Wipp as Piero’s younger brother, Francesco. Matthew Davenport directs. Shows are on Thursday to Saturday at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. There’s no show on Easter Sunday, April 16. Arts & Entertainment Capture Photography Festival comes to New West The Capture Photography Festival is coming to the streets and studios of New Westminster. The city is playing a major role in this year’s festival, which runs from April 1 to 28 at galleries, studios and other venues around the Lower Mainland. In New West, viewers can check out the Gabor Gasztonyi Studio & Gallery, where Gasztonyi will be showing Hastings: a Second Look. The show, which has been selected as a featured exhibit for this year’s festival, builds upon Gasztonyi’s work photographing life on the Downtown Eastside – which he documented in the 2010 book A Room in
the City. He has continued to photograph and work in the area since that time. The exhibition opens Thursday, April 6, with a reception from 6 to 10 p.m., and continues until Saturday, May 13.The gallery is at 730 12th St. Across town, the Van Dop Gallery will also be featured in the festival, with Inspiring Preservation: An Alternate Perspective. The exhibition features work by Vancouver-based photographic artist Desirée Patterson, who uses digitally collaged compositions to comment upon humanity’s reliance on and degradation of our environment. The ongoing BRINK exhibition at New Media Gallery, featuring the work of five international artists, is also part of this year’s Capture festival. It’s ongoing at the gallery at Anvil Centre until April 30. See www. newmediagallery.ca. And, in the public art realm, the City of New Westminster is welcoming two new public artworks in the city.
Matthew Brooks’ The Telephone Salesman can be seen at 350 Columbia St., while James Nizam’s Heliographic Scale is at 611 Sixth St. Both pieces of art came to the city in response to a call for photographic work that considers the theme of traffic. Both these large-scale installations – Brooks’ work is 31 by 38 feet, while Nizam’s is 29 by 43 feet – speak to the exchange of information and the traffic of communication. Both will be on display in the city for at least a year. The Capture Photogra-

cal Theatre was staging the production, she was determined to land the role of Reno – and she wasn’t shy about announcing her intention to director Valerie Easton. “I kind of just barged in to the auditions and told them what I wanted,” she says with a laugh. “I’m so grateful that Val decided to include me in this project. It’s nice to be back on a familiar stage.” Suddaby was last onstage with RCMT in 2011 for Will Rogers Follies. It was during that production that she met the two actors who have become her co-stars in Anything Goes: Daniel

James White and Shannon Hanbury, who appear as the young lovers Billy and Hope. As it happens, Hanbury also appeared alongside her as one of the angels in the TUTS production of Anything Goes – and, in the same production, Andrew Cownden appeared as Moonface, a role he’s returning to in the RCMT show. “This show in particular, these people in particular, at this theatre in particular, it’s such a great feeling of coming back,” Suddaby says. She’s astounded by the talent of all the people who share the stage, gushing over the talents of White,
Hanbury, Cownden and Michael Wild, who appears as Lord Evelyn. “Vancouver is overrun with talent, and Val is doing everything in her power to showcase as many of those people as possible,” she says. “The sound of the ensemble is incredible, as usual. There’s some brilliant dancers in the show, some amazing character actors.” And, of course, it’s all being packaged in a show Suddaby describes as “glamorous” – what with Easton’s sparklingly choreographed dance numbers, the full orchestra under the baton of James Bryson, the costuming by Chris
Sinosich and the gorgeous art deco sets by Omanie Elias. “Ohmygod, just you wait till you see the set. It’s going to be everything you want it to be and more,” she says. “It’s just going to blow your mind.” As she watches it all come together as opening night approaches, Suddaby is only sad about the fact that she won’t be able to see the magic for herself the way the audience can. “It’s going to be hard to top this experience,” she says. “I only hope that our audiences come out for this one. It truly is going to be a show not to be missed.”

Board members sought Cities must address needs of an aging population
Volunteers wanted for Seniors Services Society Theresa McManus

The Seniors Services Society is on the hunt for board members to help it assist seniors throughout Metro Vancouver. The upcoming term will begin on July 1, 2017 and last for two years. Board meetings are held on the last Tuesday of every month at 4 p.m. “This enables most of those people who work to attend the board meetings, which usually run about 90 minutes,” said a notice from the nominating committee. “We ask that each board member become involved in one committee of the board and the time commitment for those committees will vary.” Based in New Westminster, the Seniors Services Society provides support services and volunteer opportunities in New Westminster and housing services and community
education in Metro Vancouver. Its support services, which aim to help seniors live independently, including Meals on Wheels, Better at Home services such as medical transportation, light housekeeping, friendly phone calls and grocery shopping, and Out and About trips including a dining club and lunch brunch. The society also provides information and referrals, assistance filling out forms and an annual income tax clinic. Board members will support the society’s work and provide leadership and strategic governance. Some of the directors’ responsibilities include: developing and monitoring the society’s policy; planning for the society’s future; ensuring the organization complies with the laws governing the society; appointing chairpersons of committees; ensuring the proper functioning of committees; evaluating the executive director annually;
evaluating the success of the society’s programs and the performance of the committees; and participating in any committees or task forces when required. The Seniors Services Society’s vision is to have a community where seniors live with dignity in a safe, comfortable and healthy home. Anyone wishing to become a director must become a society member, which is a $12 annual membership. If you’re interested in serving as a board director, contact the Seniors Services Society at 604-5206621 by April 14.

The Institute for Research on Public Policy says cities must rethink development to prepare for an aging population. A new publication from the not-for-profit says municipalities must refocus their community planning efforts to deal with the impact of decades-old car-dependent suburban sprawl that leaves less-mobile seniors isolated. Glenn Miller, a senior associate with the Canadi-
an Urban Institute in Toronto and author of the report, said seniors prefer to “age at home” but most older residents who want to stay in their own neighbourhoods have limited housing options. “It is fair to say that our current suburbs are no place to grow old,” he said in a press release. Miller said more than 500 Canadian municipalities have declared their intention to become “age friendly”, but this movement has led only to physical improvements such as
more park benches, better lighting or clearer signage. He said no municipalities have yet taken the step of amending their land-use plans to reflect that commitment. According to Miller, amending provincial planning policies to make agefriendly planning a municipal priority would complement other provincial policies favouring compact, walkable developments and promoting aging at home. He said it would also nudge Continued on page 35

Creativity & Children A great mix
That’s one of the reasons our annual Design an Ad special supplement continues to be popular in New Westminster.
The New Westminster Record, local businesses and organizations, and the New Westminster school district, team up and ask city students to design newspaper ads for the special section. Every year, the students produce insightful, creative, thoughtful – and often humorous – advertisements that highlight the strengths of their subjects and often carry compelling messages. The businesses and groups get to choose which students’ advertisement they want to run in the section and our photographer visits the students. The ads and photos of students are put together by our team at the New Westminster Record and another Design an Ad section is complete. The ads are also on display at Royal City Centre and River Market from March 31. I would like to thank all of the students, teachers and participating advertisers who continue to make this annual project a real success!

Age-friendly strategy needed Continued from page 18 municipalities to take concrete steps to integrate the age-friendly communities concept in their planning and development-review processes. The City of New Westminster has projected the number of seniors in the city to double in the next 25 years. In order to meet the needs of an aging population, the city is working with University of British Columbia students to develop an age-friendly strategy
to ensure its facilities, infrastructure, programs and services can meet the needs of seniors today and in the future. Miller said public health departments are becoming increasingly vocal about the connection between healthy aging and the built environment. “The suburbs of the future are pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods that contain a mix of housing types and provide for the needs of residents at all stages of
their lives,” he said. As the number of elderly seniors continues to grow, Miller said collaboration across provincial and municipal initiatives will be the key to successfully adapting suburbs and transportation networks to meet the needs of Canada’s aging population. Miller’s report, No Place to Grow Old: How Canadian Suburbs Can Become Age Friendly, can be viewed at www.irpp.org.

City needs places to sit A public seating strategy is being implemented to support the pedestrian objectives of the city’s master transportation plan. Council has directed staff to develop a public seating strategy that would include the creation of standards for distances between seating opportunities and principles for bench placement, such as places providing summer
shade and winter sun, views of sunsets and sunrises and multiple benches to facilitate group conversation. A staff report states that accessible seating in public places is an important part of pedestrian and transit infrastructure. A staff recommendation stated “seating as a destination” encourages spontaneous conversation and

Arts & Entertainment Local actor in Valley Song A New Westminster actor is onstage in a new production of Valley Song. The play, originally produced at the Gateway Theatre, is running until April 8 at Pacific Theatre in Vancouver. It stars New West’s own David Adams as Abraam “Buks” Jonker, a pumpkin farmer caught in the aftermath of apartheid in South Africa, with Sereana Malani as his granddaughter,Veronica. For Adams, the story by playwright Athol Fugard is close to his heart. “I was born Kleurlinge, or Coloured (mixed race), during apartheid in South Africa,” he says in a press release. “I’ve always been fascinated by how my people have adapted to the new government structure without institutionalized racism at its core. Now that everyone has the ‘freedom’ to be, how have the old ways and deeply rooted caste system changed – or have they?” Valley Song is onstage at the Pacific Theatre, 1440 West 12th Ave., until April

ASK AN OPTOMETRIST
Q A
I see an eye specialist – do I still need to see an optometrist for routine eye examinations?
Understanding the role of different eye care providers can be somewhat confusing. Optometrists are considered the primary care providers for our eyes, DR. SHAINUL WALJEE and ophthalmologists/specialists are secondary level providers and surgeons. Usually one would require a referral to see an ophthalmologist regarding a specific problem like glaucoma, cataracts or macular degeneration. It is important to not only have those specific problems taken care of by the appropriate specialist, but also to see an optometrist on a regular basis. Optometrists examine and assess eye diseases and disorders, as well as co-manage systemic conditions with possible ocular effects such as diabetes and hypertension. In addition, Doctors of Optometry specialize in prescribing and fitting appropriate eyewear to ensure comfortable and crisp vision.

ASK A JOB SEARCH EXPERT
Q A
How do I ease my nerves before an interview?
The best piece of advice is to practice and prepare for anything, over prepare then go with the flow. Carry out a dry run of your route to where BRIAN HUNJAN you are going, how long it will take Community Relations to get there as being late is not an Coordinator option. Learn everything you can about the company and job so that you can converse with ease, demonstrating eagerness and vested interest. Highlight the qualities in the job posting you might be lacking and be prepared to answer the dreaded “weaknesses” question. Whatever requirements that you meet or exceed, ensure you have supporting evidence. Ensure your values align mutually, otherwise, one of two things is likely to happen; you will be disgruntled and quit or be terminated. When you go there prepared, you will be confident and present well. Best of luck! www.fraserworks.ca | 604.522.9701 ext. 175 | Hours: M-F 8:30am-4:30pm 2nd Floor 519 7th Street, New Westminster, BC

QUEENS PARK PET HOSPITAL
T
eam members who work in an animal hospital can now become Fear Freesm certified professionals. When staff have earned this designation, they have done specific training to care for your pet’s emotional wellbeing as well as his or her physical well-being.
Does your pet show signs of stress and anxiety before arriving at the veterinary clinic? Ask if previsit sedation may take the edge off and keep your pet happy and relaxed. Fear Free certified professionals will bring you and your pet directly into the exam room when you arrive if your pet is nervous in the reception area. This will allow your pet to explore the room and relax a little first. Some hospitals use calming pheromones which are infused throughout the room using diffusers. Only dogs and cats can smell them, and they find them relaxing. There may also be music playing in the hospital that is specially created for canine and feline stress reduction. In calm pet hospital environments, voices are kept low and calm, and force is never used to handle your pet. Gentle control techniques and mild sedatives are used when necessary to reduce your pet’s anxiety. Unless it’s medically inappropriate, your pet should be given lots of treats during the visit. This is so he or she starts associating a trip to the veterinarian with good things! That will keep stress levels low. Bringing your pet into the appointment hungry can help this process along. Some veterinary hospitals will invite you to visit at any time with your dog for social visits to have a treat. Some pets prefer to be examined up on an exam table, in your lap, in their carrier, or on the floor. Non-slip yoga mats may be used on the exam table or on the floor to prevent slipping and help your pet feel secure. Interested in learning more about Fear Free veterinary visits? ASK A VETERINARIAN
Q A
My dog has been itchy and I saw a flea on her. Should I give her a flea bath?
Instead of a flea bath, talk to your veterinary team about products that are applied to the skin once a month. These DR. MANJU ARORA products can be purchased without a prescription. This small amount of liquid kills fleas on contact and controls all flea life stages, and is waterproof. It is important to treat all dogs and cats in the household. Dogs and cats can also be itchy for many other reasons (such as allergies). If your pet continues to lick or scratch after a flea treatment, or if the skin does not look normal, book an appointment with your veterinarian. Your veterinary clinic may have on online store where you can purchase these products and have them delivered to your home. Practice by the AAFP.

ASK A SLEEP EXPERT
Q A
Does hay fever/allergic rhinitis affect CPAP use?
Yes, nasal congestion can make it very difficult to use CPAP therapy. Heated humidification and a climate controlled hose can greatly decrease the symptoms of nasal congestion, dry nose and throat. A hypoallergenic filter can also help minimize breathing in allergens. Remember to change your filter monthly. Keep the windows closed during pollen season, and make sure that dust/pet dander is not accumulating in the bedroom. Many people find that a daily sinus rinse helps relieve congestion. Prescription nasal sprays or allergy medications can also relieve symptoms. Visit a CanSleep location to speak with a therapist about adjusting your humidity. Breathe Better. Sleep Easy. Live Well. ASK A REALTOR
Q A
What do you think is going to happen to home values this spring?
If the strata market is any indication, there are plenty of positive signs that spring will once again bring increasing DERRICK THORNHILL prices. The condo market has never Park Georgia Realty seen the type of buying activity that is taking place right now! It’s as hot as the housing market was this time last year and that’s great news for the detached housing market in New West. It’s a reason to rest easy, knowing that strata properties never outperform real property over time. I predict by the time water restrictions are in place, home prices will be moving upwards once again! Call me today to get an accurate value of your home heading into the spring market.

ASK AN ESTHETICIAN
Q A
Why do I need to buy the prescribed home care products? I already have a home care routine!
The key to optimal skin health is a skincare professional. Using professional products in a twice daily, medical KATIE MARSHALL esthetician tailored regimen, gives the skin cumulative repair. It increases the speed of the cell cycle, making skin appear younger and repair itself. A regimen that includes monthly facials, chemical peels, peptides, and hydration will plump up the skin. Using professional skin care products actually improves the skin instead of artificially and temporarily plumping up an area. The science of skin care has improved dramatically over the years, and chemists are creating products that use ingredients that tell the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, that improve dark spots, and smooth texture without the risks of more invasive procedures.

New Westminster teen keeps her distance Dan Olson

At 14, New Westminster’s Milena Kalisch has discovered a few things. She loves running, and the longer the course better. She’s also pretty good at it. Kalisch made an impressive debut at the U.S. Athletic Amateur Union (AAU) national indoor track and field championships earlier this month in Landover, Maryland, declaring a couple of medals for the return home. For the St.Thomas More student, it was awesome just being there. “I felt very excited to have done so well my first time competing in a national championship event,” she told the Record in an email. “I felt so happy and overjoyed that I was even able to participate in such a big event in front of such large crowds.” Kalisch competed in the 3,000- and 1,500-metre
races for 14-year-old girls, scoring silver and bronze. Not a bad spring break result for someone who spent much of 2016 sidelined due to a leg fracture. “I felt a bit nervous before starting because I had never run the 3,000m on a track,” she recalled. “In Canada we do not run the 3,000m in competition until we are 16 years old. I had only run 3,000m in practice and in cross-country races. “This was my first track race since I fractured my tibia early in 2016, so I worried a little about my leg.” Her first event was the 3,000m run, one of 20 runners competing for position on a 200m track. She was aware that it could be jumbled and didn’t want that to stymie her pace. “Before I left for the races, my coach recommended I start at a comfortable pace on the edge of the pack until the crowd thinned out. After six laps there was a group of five of us in the lead … and it got tacti-
cal because no one wanted to take the lead so the race slowed down a lot.” When she crossed the finish line there was just one runner ahead of her – 13 seconds separating her from gold. Entering the race, based on her personal best, Kalisch was seeded ninth. The next day, she followed a similar route in the 1,500m event, enduring a crowded field and slipping back as far as eighth before lopping into the topthree by the fifth lap to finish third overall in a time of 5:08.66.This time, just five seconds separated her from first. As a youth, Kalisch gave numerous events a try, first as a member of the Royal City Track and Field Club and now with Ocean Athletic in White Rock, where her coach is Olympic 3,000m bronze medallist Lynn Kanuka. A B.C. champion in both cross-country and the 1,200m in 2015, Kalisch’s winning stride was stopped

by a leg stress fracture. It meant a couple of months of little activity, then onto a pool treadmill. With lots of encouragement from her coach and oversight from her doctor at Fortius Sport and Health, she strengthened the limb to the point where she was ready to race. Putting last year’s injury behind her, the Californiaborn, Canadian-raised teen said the biggest challenge to getting back on course wasn’t the physical, but the mental side of recovery. “The biggest obstacles to overcome after my injury (were) the fear of reinjuring my leg and getting my speed back. When I was injured, I could do nothing for months, so first I had to get back in shape and now it’s working on regaining my speed. … It was really hard not to be running and training with my club, I felt very sad and worried about my leg.” Her first race after the rehab was the Pinetree Classic cross-country race last September, which she won. She

followed that with a provincial championship. The most comfortable fit has been the distance races. “I love the long races and the strategy involved. You have to decide where you should be positioned in the first few laps of your race,
and you also need to figure out when you need to start picking up the pace,” she said. “You have to be careful to make sure you don’t go out too fast so that you still have the energy left to sprint when it’s time for your finishing kick.”

VIJFHUIZEN, Theodora Maria
November 21, 1934 March 22, 2017 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beautiful mother. After a long battle with Alzheimer’s, Thea fought to the very end of her life with all the strength and determination that she was known for. In the presence of her loving son, friends and wonderful staff at the New Vista Care Home in Burnaby. Thea’s soul was welcomed in the arms of her Lord on the second day of Spring. Thea enjoyed life in so many ways, including in her much loved career as a first aid ski patroller and of course, dancing and showing off her legs at the Royal Canadian Legion # 2. Thea adored her sons and will also be sadly missed by many friends and family in Canada, the US and her birthplace, the Netherlands. Thea was always ready to help those in need and as a final act of kindness she has donated her body to the UBC Body Donation Program to assist in hopefully finding a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. Donations to the Alzheimer’s Association http://www.alzheimer.ca/en/bc/Get-involved/Ways-to-donate or the UBC Body Donation Program (604-822-2578) would be very appreciated.

W ILD RICE The award-winning Wild Rice Restaurant located at River Market, has never wavered from a commitment to fusion inspired farm to table dishes. In every way, presentation, taste, technique, Wild Rice cuisine exceeds expectations. “Wild Rice was the first restaurant to bring the concept of ‘modern Chinese’ to the Lower Mainland, ”says owner, Andrew Wong“. For me, integral to being a ‘modern Chinese restaurant’ is our focus on using locally sourced sustainable ingredients. Although locally sourced is a growing trend, we do this by nature.” Currently, Andrew is preparing, with much anticipation, to meet with the local growers to see what enticing crops they have for the season. Whether it’s Ocean Wise seafood, hormone free meat, organic or farm fresh vegetables, everything is made in house to order. This culinary virtuoso fuses elements of Chinese cuisine he remembers from his youth with the offerings of the West coast to craft some of the best fare you’ll find in the Royal City.
