Arenex collapse remains unsolved

Local crews head to Interior Firefighters and police are joining the fight

Engineering report says the exact cause of the roof collapse will likely never be known

It’s unlikely that the exact cause of the Queen’s Park Arenex roof collapse will ever be known. The city hired aDB Engineering to determine the possible causes and events that resulted in the roof collapse of the 1938 building on Dec. 19, 2016. In a July 5 letter to the city, David Rajendran of aDB Engineering stated the review couldn’t definitively identify one sole cause of the roof collapse, given the limited information available pertaining to the original roof design. “Typically, a structural failure is caused by a number of compounding factors, and seldom can it be attributed to a welldefined singular item,” Rajendran wrote. “It should be noted that a detailed formal structural forensic investigation has not been completed for this collapse. As such, the information contained in this report is based on informal calculations, assumptions and opinions, and therefore should not be used for legal or insurance purposes.” aDB Engineering determined a number of factors likely acted “in an unfortunate combination” that resulted in the collapse of the roof. Not surprisingly, snow loads were cited as one of the factors contributing to the roof collapse as the region had seen a series of snow falls and “significantly Continued on page 11

THAT FRIDAY FEELING: The second Fridays on Front, held last Friday on the newly completed Front Street mews, drew large crowds to New Westminster’s downtown once again. Visitors enjoyed libations, food and entertainment provided by the arts council. There were also artisans selling everything from handmade soaps to ginger beer. NewWestminster police officers and firefighters are in B.C.’s Interior helping first responders deal with wildfires that continue to rage out of control. “We’re doing this to support and assist with an unprecedented fire emergency that we’ve never kind of had before,” said NewWestminster Police Department spokesperson Staff Sgt. Andrew Perry. So far, only local police officers working in seconded provincial RCMP units have been deployed, according to Perry. On July 7, the first team of eight to 10 NewWest officers was sent toWilliams Lake, Quesnel and 100 Mile House. A second crew left on July 11. Officers are helping with evacuations, roadblocks and protecting property, as required. “We just had some members return in the last day or two and some new ones are going up,” he added. “Hours are up to 16 hours in a day that they’re doing now, and it sounds like they’re being rotated around.” Continued on page 10

Up Front SUMMER FUN

Festival season heating up in New West Theresa McManus

tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca

Festival season is kicking into full swing in the Royal City with several major festivals coming to local streets in the coming weeks. Uptown Live returns to the streets of uptown New Westminster on Saturday, July 22, while the Royal City Show and Shine returns after a two-year hiatus on Sunday, July 23. Uptown Live features a full day of free fun with live performances, food trucks, a beer garden, interactive activities, art installations, artisan vendors and more. (See all the details in related story below.) Daniel Westley and Youngblood are headlining the festival, which also features acts like Coco Jafro, Buffalo Jones, Echo Nebraska, Lion Bear Fox, GB Roots,Youngblood, Star Captains, Barefoot Mountain,The New Groovement and others on four stages. “I think Uptown Live is known for the overall quality of the music,” said festival organizer Douglas Smith. “I think we have unearthed a few more dandies this year for sure.” Indie musicians will be performing on four stages in uptown New West. In addition to two main stages on Sixth Street, a café-style vibe will be featured at an acoustic stage outside Westminster Centre mall and an electro stage will be located on Sixth Avenue. “We are definitely trying to appeal to a young audience. With the music, if a band is good it doesn’t re-

ally matter if you have heard of them before or whether you think you like a certain kind of music more than others. If they are good, they are good,” Smith said. “We had 70-year-old people last year who were blown away and commented on these young bands and how musically talented they are.” A one-block beer garden on Sixth Street, between Sixth Avenue and Princess Street, will accommodate 700 people. The Red Truck Beer Company is sponsoring the beer garden. “It’s going to be a really good environment to sit and have a beer, a bite to eat and watch the music,” Smith said. “It’s going to be prime seating for everybody.” The following day, the Royal City Show and Shine drives into a new location at the Justice Institute (715 McBride Blvd.).The show and shine, running on Sunday, July 23 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., expects to attract about 100 cars and food trucks offering a car-show feel. Thousands of foodies will descend on downtown New West the following weekend when the fifth annual Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Festival takes place on Saturday, July 29 from 4 to 10 p.m. Now in its fifth year, it’s billed as the largest oneday food truck festival in Canada. “We are looking at about the same as last year – I’d say 85 to 90 trucks and 150 vendors in total. That number seemed to work really well,” said Kendra Johnston, executive director of the Downtown New Westmin-

FESTIVITIES GALORE: Lydia Hol performs at last year’s Uptown Live festival. This year’s edition is on this Saturday. Below, the Tasty Torpedo food truck dishes out some delights at a past year’s Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Festival, which returns July 29.

ster Business Improvement Association. “The lineups weren’t too long. The trucks were happy, the attendees were happy. It seemed we hit the magic number last year so we are going to try that again.” Attendees will also be able to enjoy several beer gardens and live music along the street, as well as the Style Hive, which is highlighting fashion by featuring fashion trucks and local fashion businesses in one block of the festival. The fun doesn’t end in July, as Pride New West’s

annual street festival is set for Saturday, Aug. 19 from 3 to 8 p.m. on Columbia Street. The event includes entertainment, a children’s area, booths and vendors, outdoor patios, food trucks, a drag show and more. Every Friday is party time in New West this summer as artisan vendors, live music and food trucks descend on downtown New West for Fridays on Front, which takes place every Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. until Aug. 25 in the 600 block of Front Street. Front Street will be licensed for the night, so

you’ll be able to buy beer and wine and stroll along the new Front Street Mews

and check out the night’s offerings.

Indie music acts find a home at Uptown Live Lauren Boothby

editorial@newwestrecord.ca

If you want to know who the next big act is, you might find them in New Westminster this weekend. Uptown Live is back on July 22.The six-block party is one of the biggest music festivals in the Lower Mainland and one of the top spots to check out upand-coming B.C. indie musicians. An electronic music stage, a giant live mural and dance lessons are new this

year, and the beer garden is almost doubling its size. Festival director Douglas Smith says the all-ages event supports the B.C. music scene. “Uptown Live is really a launching pad for a lot of young, independent label bands,” Smith says. “There’s a lot of really cool bands that have gone on to pretty significant careers that got launched at Uptown Live.” Festival-goers will get a chance to practise their

moves at the dance stage with lessons in various styles from Arthur Murray Dance Studio throughout the day. Smith says the new dance stage is a way to get the audience engaged with the music. “It’s interactive. People can come out and have some fun,” he says. “I think it’s going to be a fun area for the kids.” The kids will also enjoy the live art mural new this year, a 10-foot canvas by the family zone.

Uptown Live is really a launching pad “You are going to be able to just go out and pick up a paintbrush and do your thing,” Smith says. Those wanting a more low-key setting can grab a bite at one of more than a dozen food trucks and sit and relax at the café-style

acoustic stage outside London Drugs, or unwind with a live yoga demonstration. For the adults, the cityblock-size beer garden will be a favourite with 10 beers on tap, as well as wine and cider. While the beer truck is one of Smith’s favourite additions, he says the energy of the event year after year is the real attraction. “Everybody’s having a good time, enjoying the music and all of the food,” he said. “It’s just a really good

energy.” With a crowd last year of upwards of 15,000 Smith says he is hoping for over 20,000 this year. The event will go on rain or shine. Street closures begin at 6 a.m., and streets are reopened by 11 p.m. Free all-day parking is available at Royal City Centre and Westminster Centre from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and metered parking in the Uptown area. Buses will be rerouted onto Eighth Street and Eighth Avenue.

We needed to open our minds up to other product lines,” Pistone said. “We are customer-driven.We listen to our customers very closely. If they are asking for something over and over and over again, we get it in. Last October, it moved to a space two units down the street – a space where Brick & Mortar had previously ran popup community events like art shows.

HAPPY CLIENT COMMENTS: We were extremely impressed with Lyle & Sandy’s enthusiasm in assisting us to sell our property. We live on a busy street, so knew the challenges we would have. Lyle & Sandy gave us confidence that their marketing plan would bring a successful sale. They informed us of the local property market & assisted us to price our home competitively. One weekend, two open houses produced four offers. We sold in one week 4% above asking. Just like that. Couldn’t have asked for a better result. They are a fantastic team. And for a flat fee, no less!! Cudos to them both!!

My experience with Lyle and Sandy has been just wonderful. From the beginning they were very professional, friendly, and very prompt in answering any questions I had. My decision to list with them resulted in significant savings in listing fees, but more importantly, my condo sold in less than a week for more than the asking price. I would highly recommend anyone thinking of listing to consider Assist2Sell and rely on Lyle and Sandy’s professionalism and market expertise to get the job done.

From the start we liked Sandy and Lyle. We had to move quickly on our sale and they made it happen quickly. We had one open house and multiple offers and sold considerably over asking. They were very knowledgeable and offered a lot of advice. We were very pleased and will use them again in the future, we highly recommend them.

Opinion OUR VIEW

It’s time to take fire warnings seriously

Earlier this week, haze settled over the cityscape and an air quality advisory was issued for residents across the Lower Mainland – all because of the wildfires that are blazing across the B.C. Interior. If we’re not going to take fire warnings seriously now, then when will we? The City of NewWestminster has issued a ban on smoking, barbecue use and

open fires in all of its parks, trails and natural lands. It should go without saying that it behooves us all to heed those warnings, but we’ll say it anyway. Because every year, there has to be at least one idiot who thinks the warnings don’t apply to him. Every year, there has to be one picnicker who figures her barbecue is the one that’s really the exception to

If we’re not going to take fire warnings seriously now, then when will we? the rule. Every year, there has to be one smoker who just carelessly discards a cigarette out a car window, or at the side of a trail while walking

through the park. Let’s try to make this year the one where we actually all pay attention and work cooperatively to make sure we don’t set anything else in

B.C. on fire, shall we? Let’s all agree to follow a few ground rules: Don’t smoke in the parks. Don’t throw your cigarette butt out your car window. And don’t fire up that barbecue in the park no matter how nice Saturday evening looks. Got it? And while we’re at it, let’s make sure we do our best to take care of those who need a little extra help during

this period of bad air. Folks who are elderly or who have health conditions affecting their lungs or heart are at particular risk, so be sure to keep an eye out for neighbours, friends and family members who may need a help with the gardening or lawn mowing. Keeping British Columbians safe isn’t just a job for the firefighters. It’s a job for all of us.

MY VIEW KEITH BALDREY

Electoral reform is complicated The stark urban/rural divide that has cleaved its way onto our provincial electoral map may be about to play a pivotal role in shaping the outcome of any attempt to change our voting system. There will be a referendum in the fall of 2018 on whether to move to some kind of proportional representation system. The Greens love the idea, the NDP supports it (sort of) and it seems the B.C. Liberals are dead set against it. Seemingly out of nowhere, B.C. Liberal leader Christy Clark made it clear her party is now against the idea because pretty well any form of PR would rob the vast non-urban regions of the province a number of elected representatives. B.C. has long employed a policy of “protecting” ridings that have nowhere near the voting population of most Metro Vancouver ridings, to ensure the makeup of the B.C. legislature reflects the interests of the many people who live outside the Metro region. But pretty well any form of proportional representation would end any such protection of those ridings. The B.C. Liberals, who pretty well own almost all the ridings outside of Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island, now clearly sense their political interests are not well-served by a change in the voting system (Clark had tepidly endorsed the referendum idea when her party was trying to woo the Greens to prop up her government, but that has evidently changed). The Greens like moving

to a model of some kind of proportional representation because it pretty well guarantees an ongoing presence for their party in the B.C. legislature. Our current first-past-the-post system is likely a major hurdle to the Greens gaining significantly more seats in elections. But a voting system that gives a party a number of seats roughly based on how many general votes it gets would inflate the Green count in the legislature. If it received about 16 per cent of the vote in an election (as it did in May) it would get about 16 per cent of the seats. So the Greens have a vested self-interest in changing our voting system, and it is why it has made that referendum its number 1 policy priority. No, the party’s top priority is not stopping the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion, or halting the construction of the Site C dam, or greatly and quickly increasing the carbon tax, or raising all kinds of other taxes. All those things were in the B.C. Green Party platform, but they now take a distant back seat to this looming referendum. The confidence agreement between the Greens and the NDP does not at all guarantee meeting the Greens’ positions on those various other issues, but it does make it clear there will be a referendum on electoral reform. And it is becoming increasingly apparent that referendum may further entrench our rural/urban divide. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

No, it wasn’t for the cats Police responding to reports of a suicidal woman at a New West home discovered a marijuana grow operation there as well. Once inside the residence, officers noticed bright light emitting from under a closed bedroom door. The female resident told police it was to keep her cats warm. Police entered the room and found nine pot plants and hydroponic equipment with an estimated street value of $9,000. Police arrested the woman and seized the plants and equipment but did not press charges. The woman was not known to police.

Letters Towers will be monuments to wealth no matter what

Dear Editor: Re: Bosa towers are a ‘golden’ opportunity for tourism, Letters, Record, July 13. In last week’s Letters section, Craig Barton suggested that the Pier West development will be “yet another monument to wealth” if it doesn’t include a publicly accessible viewing platform. I’m concerned it’s going to be exactly that – viewing platform or not. I have yet to understand how it will serve any benefit to the people of New Westminster. Will suites be priced so that median-income parents can afford to buy and also save for retirement and their children’s post-secondary educations? Are we being offered carbon offsets to mitigate the highly greenhouse gas intensive construction process and the addition of almost 200 new cars to our streets? Are the developers offering an amenity grant so that we can, say, build separated bike lanes on which children can ride safely to school? Will nearby homeowners be compensated for lost views and subsequently diminished property values? As to whether the towers will be “iconic” (as we have been told), I have doubts about that, too. To be sure, they will be big – but bigness is not a sufficient condition for “iconic,” which usually connotes novelty or innovation. When I think “iconic” I think of New York’s Chrysler Building or the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco. The Pier West towers are pretty ge-

neric but for the addition of what appears to be a two-dimensional wave pattern made of tinted glass panels – a detail that’s bound to look dated and cheap. Again, I’d like to know who will benefit from this development, and I hope the Record will provide more information in the weeks to come. Patrick Parkes, New Westminster

Lots of potential tourism sites in NewWestminster

Dear Editor: Re: Bosa towers are a ‘golden’ opportunity for tourism, Letters, Record, July 13. Craig Barton’s idea to include public access to one of the Pier West towers is a brilliant idea. And it’s not like it hasn’t already been done. I have visited Q1, in Surfers Paradise in Queensland, Australia. At the time it was the world’s tallest residential building, but not anymore. They have an observation deck with ticket admission prices starting at $14 AUD. And if you are brave enough, you can even take in the view from the outside doing the SkyPoint Climb, where you walk on the outside of the building (prices starting at $54 AUD). And since we’re talking about borrowing ideas from those smart Aussies, when we finally rebuild the Pattullo Bridge, how about incorporating a Sydney Bridge Climb-like tourist experience (tickets starting at $253 AUD) – they are extremely popular. Deanna Tan, New Westminster

Local firefighters help out in Williams Lake

Continued from page 1 Mindful that more officers may be required if the fires persist, Perry said the police department has put a call out to all its members asking for volunteers should the need arise. “We’re trying to be proactive and kind of get a list of members who can drop their life right now and go up there and help out and everything,” he said. Whether officers working in the local detachment will be tapped to go is still unknown. It all depends on the situation in the Interior, Perry said, adding police operations in NewWestminster

are not going to be affected, and the costs associated with sending officers to help are being covered by the provincial government. The NewWestminster Fire and Rescue Services, meanwhile, sent its second team of firefighters toWilliams Lake on Monday, according to Coun. Chuck Puchmayr. The first crew – ErinWilliams, Dustin Matson, Alasdair Dunbar and Jason Tyler – were set to return to New West with Puchmayr on Tuesday. The firefighters sent to Williams Lake are part of a larger effort by the local fire

The department, so far, has sent one engine to Kamloops and two toWilliams Lake (one remains on standby while the other is staffed by the four-person crew). Fire and rescue services will update mayor and council if needs change, according to the city’s website. Calls to fire Chief Tim Armstrong for comment were not returned.

“I could hear properly for the first time since I was a teenager.” Nate Davis will never forget the first time he used his hearing aids. Nate had suffered with his hearing for most of his life but all that changed when he got in touch with Miracle-Ear. After several operations in his younger years, he was told the hearing had completely gone from his right ear, a situation he had lived with for 25 years. “My wife, Brenda, had to be my ears, even when we were talking she’d have to do lots of listening to make sure I heard it all correctly. I would struggle when I went to the pub with friends, and always felt like I wasn’t part of the conversation. “It got more frustrating and I didn’t want to accept that I might spend the rest of my life in a world that was becoming increasingly silent. So I decided to book an appointment with Miracle-Ear. Nate was amazed by what happened when he was fitted for his hearing aids. “It was incredible,” says Nate. “Everything was there and crystal clear: voices, birdsong, traffic noise—sounds

City Engineering report says Arenex was adequately maintained Continued from page 1 lower than normal” temperatures. The engineers estimate the total snow and ice weight on the roof at the time of the collapse would have been 22.5 pounds per square foot (psf). According to aDB Engineering, there was no building code or municipal bylaws in existence when the Arenex was built, so it

didn’t have sufficient information to determine the snow load for the structure, but 1939 city bylaws stated roofs should be designed for 40 psf.The engineers also noted that previous snow falls could have caused overstressing in the truss that wasn’t visible. At the time of the collapse, some city officials questioned whether a new

insulated roof added to the structure in 2011 could have contributed to the collapse, as the original uninsulated roof would have allowed heat to escape from the roof and help melt any snow accumulating on top of the building. “The heat from the building would certainly help melt the snow and, thus, possibly decrease the over-

all weight of the snow on the roof, however, a detailed thermal study has not been completed so the rate of snow melt (and subsequent reduction in weight of snow) with the original roof construction is not known,” stated the letter. “It should be noted that building codes do not normally permit thermal melting of snow as a means of snow weight

mitigation. Although the reduced weight of snow from thermal melting would have helped reduce the snow weight, based on the snow design loads, this means of snow mitigation should not have been necessary.” The engineer’s report also noted that the weight of the new roof is of a comparable weight to the original roof. It also says there was no

sign of rain water or snow melt leaking under the roofing material and that the city had a "comprehensive" maintenance schedule for the building. The report says the building was in good condition for its age and was adequately maintained. New Westminster man at home on the stage Veteran character actor returns to Bard on the Beach atVanier Park Grant Granger

ggranger@newwestrecord.ca

Like many New Westminster residents, David Adams works hard at his trade and earns decent money doing so. Sometimes, though, he’ll be at a dinner party and some guests don’t believe he can. He says they are unable to wrap their head around it when he tells them he makes a good living from acting. But he does. Quite a nice one, as a matter of fact. Enough to live comfortably in New West, starting 35 years ago in the West End.Then Queen’s Park for 16 years where he and his wife Suzanne – a ballet dancer, teacher and choreographer – raised two daughters (Kate and Siobhan). For the past three years the Quay has been home. “We absolutely love it,” says the deep-voiced Adams of his city. New West residents might not know his name, but there’s a good chance they know Adams’ face. He’s built his film and television portfolio playing character parts like a doctor, lawyer or politician. He’s got a lengthy resumé of stage roles in all sorts of places. He’ll throw in some voice work and, of course, he teaches. “Without being one to toot my own horn, because I’ve had a lot of variety and whenever things are down in one field I can get work in another field, I’ve managed to make a go of it all of these years,” says Adams. “Sometimes it can be a bit of a grind, as it can be if

you’re a self-employed contractor. But looking at the big scheme of things, the fact that I’m able to do what I love to do and make a living at it is self-evident that I’ve managed to do OK. “If you are industrious and work hard and build your skill level, you can make a go of it no matter what you choose to do. That’s always been my credo.” When he teaches he tells his students, “Being an actor is a terrible existence, especially if you want any kind of security. But the people that stick with it, that have the ability to hang in there, can get lots of reward, lots of fulfilment.” At the top of his performance passions is Shakespeare. This summer he’s doing a lot of it. For the first time since 1994, Adams is performing at Bard on the Beach at Vancouver’s Vanier Park. And true to his versatility, he’s playing three roles in two plays – Much Ado About Nothing and TheWinter’s Tale. The Much Ado treatment by director John Murphy has it set in 1959 Italy. Instead of the characters being soldiers returning from war, they are production workers coming back from a movie shoot. His main role is as Antonio, a soundtrack music composer. “Shakespeare wrote quite a few songs and in Much Ado About Nothing, the famous song is Sigh No More Ladies, Sigh No More,” says Adams. “I get to sing that (in Italian) as sort of an Al Martino kind of Italian ’50s,

Beach boy singer: New West actor David Adams, centre, gets to sing like a 1950s-style crooner when he belts out Shakespeare’s Sigh No More Ladies, Sigh No More during Bard on the Beach’s Much Ado About Nothing at Vanier Park in Vancouver. PHOTO DAVID BLUE, COURTESY BARD ON THE BEACH

’60s crooner which makes it really fun.” His other role, Seacoal, is as one of the studio security guards. “They’re kind of like the Keystone Cops. Shakespeare wrote them as bumbling idiots, and that allows us to have a little bit of fun,” said Adams. “I always enjoy having two different characters in the play. It gives me a chance to put on another moustache, a different costume, a different voice maybe. Be a totally different kind of person. As far as an actor goes, it’s really a challenge.” Adams has done Much Ado twice before. The first time, he was one of the bad

guys and it was done in the traditional Shakespearean. The second time the treatment was Bollywood style. “This one works really well. He’s made a few little changes in some of the words, but the script is still Shakespeare. Because it’s so well written it can handled,” says Adams. TheWinter’s Tale was one of Shakespeare’s final plays, and by then he’d become a master dramatist who enjoyed telling stories in a fantasy fashion, says Adams. He plays a shepherd who raises a baby he found in the field, the result of a king ordering she be dumped because he believed the baby wasn’t his.

Adams says TheWinter’s Tale has become one of his favourite Shakespeare plays, ranking in his top five. “When I was a literature student, my goal in life was to be an English professor,” says Adams. “I’ve always loved language, and the fact Shakespeare wrote such beautiful poetry and yet at the same time made the purpose of the poetry was to tell great stories. “When I’m performing those words, saying those words, I can feel all the thousands of actors over the 400 years that have also spoken those lines, and also, hopefully, captivated an audience. It’s almost a religious experience because

you’re celebrating something that’s been around for 400 years.” Adams balked at going back to Bard before because it’s a long contract and having a young family made it difficult to devote a whole summer to it.There’s been a lot of changes during his 23 years away from it. For one, the tent is a lot larger with 760 seats forcing the actors to use microphones. “It’s the first time I’ve ever had to do that doing Shakespeare, and it takes a bit of getting used to,” admits Adams. “I understand because of the size of the theatre and the fact you are outdoors and you’re Continued on page 22

“I came across Bryn’s site looking at online listing.

“We’ve worked with Bryn for 4 transactions, she’s an expert negotiator who is always willing to put in the additional effort to achieve optimal prices, even if there is no benefit to herself. As a seller, I don’t think we could have had a more perfect result, with a brilliant marketing campaign and savvy price-point resulting in multiple offers and sale price $82,000 over asking. As buyers, Bryn has secured all three properties that we’ve bid on, even with aggressive competition. She is a wonderful, honest person who has more integrity than any other Realtor I’ve ever worked with.” L & A.

She asked me if I wanted help and being a first time home buyer and overwhelmed I took her up on her offer. Within a week of having her as our agent we were the proud owners of our first condo in a very competitive market. She was helpful in both being available to answer all of my questions and visiting places. She had great insights on what tactic we should use to ensure we secure our condo with multiple offers. She was really knowledgeable and attentive to our needs and if we ever decide to move she will the first person we contact.” ~ Maria & Luis

Echo Nebraska Daniel Wesley After a decade of making music for his legions of fans, Vancouver beach rocker Daniel Wesley is still going strong and refuses to slow down. With seven studio albums and hundreds of live shows under his belt, Wesley continues his relentless musical pursuit with the release of a career-spanning live album recorded at the historic Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. The live album captures his 16th headlining performance at the legendary venue, a once-again sold-out show, and highlights performances of tunes spanning his lengthy songbook, delivered with the musical dexterity and explosive energy his audiences have grown accustomed to. Wesley is bringing his live record to the people this summer with a cross-Canada tour that will give his fans what they have come to know and love: a blistering display of showmanship from DW and his unrivalled backing band, as they spread their beloved beach sound across the nation. Wesley fans can expect new material in the not-too-distant future as he’s set to hit the studio in 2017 to record his eighth studio album. After more than 10 years of music, this man shows no signs of letting up. Uptown Live is proud to present Daniel Wesley as our 2017 headline performer. www.danielwesley.com

Echo Nebraska burst onto the Canadian music scene in the fall of 2014 with the release of a music video for their first single, Hey, Allison. The Vancouver-based collective quickly gained a reputation for combining soulful acoustic songs with subtle shades of Americana. Within a week of launching the band, CBC Music added the video to its monthly list of best new music videos. The band grew out of an organic, creative setting that turned into something bigger than they had intended. Vocalist Devan Christodoulou was recording an album with a different band, when he met audio engineer and guitarist, Andy Schichter. “I was writing other songs outside the band that were closer to my roots” says Devan. “My father played guitar and sang and as a child, I was always surrounded by the music of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young. When I met Andy, I showed him some of those songs.” Andy invited Devan over to his home studio to record demos, which ended up becoming the groundwork for Echo Nebraska. After heading into the studio to record their debut EP, Send the Ships, they recruited drummer Mike Lauder, violinist Carly Frey, and bassist Dan Ponich to round out the lineup. www.echonebraska.com Artist bio’s continued on page 20

Coco Jafro

Barefoot Mountain Vancouver trio Barefoot Mountain employs a catchy brand of Americana-inspired pop and powerful live shows that are focused on one thing: showing people a good time. Since the release of their debut EP Alchemy in April 2016, the band has been building a solid following in B.C. and on stages throughout Canada. The group was brought together when Halifax singersongwriter and guitarist Cameron Hawes’ solo career took him to the West Coast to start recording new material. Upon collaborating with colleagues Lucas Marincelj (bass/mandolin/vocals) and Edward Whelan (drums/vocals), the newly formed band finished the EP together. The combined sound of Hawes’ undeniable pop sensibility along with Marincelj’s classic rock vibe over Whelan’s heavy-hitting groove shaped the sound and roots-infused melodies. In the months following Alchemy’s release, Barefoot Mountain have been busy taking their sound on the road. Currently, the band is in pre-production for a full-length album to be recorded this year with producer and platinum-selling artist Danny Craig. https://barefootmountain.bandcamp.com/releases

Coco Jafro is a hard-hitting force to be reckoned with, unifying the masses with their electrified, funky global rhythms. They bring together the schools of funk, soul, jazz and afro beat, providing a unique sound that flows from a foundation of deep set grooves. Moroccan born, lead guitarist Amine Said’s musical roots provide an exclusive sound with the proven power to instantly synchronize your soul forcing the crowd to bend and sway. In 2016, Coco Jafro added a BreakOut West nomination for Urban Artist of the Year and CBC Searchlight regional finalist ranking to their arsenal; alongside numerous festival performances, a North African tour, three EP and a Van Isle Music Award nomination for Best Live Act. With their unique brand of “Vintage Funk & 21st Century Urban Cool” (World Beat Canada), the incredibly passionate and dedicated Coco Jafro return to the studio inspired and eager to lay down their anticipated World-infused fourth album, set to be released in 2017. www.cocojafro.wixsite.com/cocojafromusic

Star Captains Hailing from Vancouver, B.C., Star Captains are taking the country by storm with their infectious grooves and powerful live performances. With their first album, New Freedoms (2013), keyboardist Max Zipursky, vocalist NaRai, guitar/bassist Gavin Youngash and guitarist Jim Black blended synth pop, R&B and indie influences to create a vibrant and distinct sound. Their sophomore album, Lightwork, finds the band experimenting with electronic soundscapes and digital effects from the comfort of The Space Studios, their hand-built recording studio in East Vancouver. The result? The dynamic presence of a compelling band, with the nuanced production of contemporary dance music. Lightwork was produced by the band along with producer/drummer Daniel Klenner. Following main stage performances at the Vancouver Jazz Festival and the Surrey Fusion Fest, Star Captains will support Lightwork in 2017 with an ambitious tour. Check out the video for the first single, Lightwork, at starcaptains.com, and follow the band at @starcaptains. www.starcaptains.com

Arts & Entertainment Being onstage has its limits Continued from page 13 competing against rescue helicopters and party boats and the people flying their kites.” Changes in character and costume can come fast and furious, which he finds fun, but it has its downside. “It does make it a bit sweaty in this weather, but it’s great fun,” says Adams. “Sometimes a nice breeze off of English Bay keeps it a little cooler, although I can tell you when you’re in a three-piece wool suit nothing can cool you off once you start getting hot.” Although he has fun performing and feels the history of Shakespeare, being on stage has its limits. “Frankly, to make a living in the live theatre is almost impossible unless you travel around the country,” says Adams. “I did that in my younger years, but you get to a point in your life where you don’t want to be living in a hotel or motel or someone’s basement suite. I’d rather be at home.” And home would be New Westminster.

TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT UPCOMING CHAMBER EVENTS OR TO BECOME A MEMBER, PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE Summertime has us thinking about team building outings to the golf course, the go-kart track or around the barbeque. There is a lot of value in bringing together your team in settings outside of the normal workplace and providing some recreation or entertainment.

UPCOMING CHAMBER EVENTS

Employee engagement activities can improve staff morale and social opportunities for your workers. Getting to know one another better in an unstructured setting is beneficial back in the office, too. Employees often list improved trust, a deeper sense of collaboration, and even a willingness to suggest more creative ideas after they’ve been provided with engagement activities.

TRAVIS LULAY LEADERSHIP DINNER AUG 10 6PM-9PM

Team building doesn’t need to be expensive either: potlucks, movie nights, and even letting employees work from home on occasion can all be ways to provide these opportunities without needing a big budget. Long term planning can also help reduce costs for employers looking for activities or events for their employees–sometimes discounts exist for companies that book ahead. Winter holiday parties are often what most people see as the traditional part of employee engagement activities but it can be hard to find a venue or the right fit. It might seem a bit strange for us to be thinking ahead to December, but we’re taking our own advice and planning long term. If you have a small team or are a solo entrepreneur and are looking to celebrate the holidays this winter, why not join us at our first annual Winter Holiday Party and let us do all the work? This party complete with mingling and a full turkey dinner (vegetarian options available!) also features the Quayside Voices choir leading a sing-a-long of festive carols. Join us at Inn at the Quay on Wednesday December 6th from 6-9pm. Tickets are only $75 per person and we’ve even secured a special “Take the Elevator Home” reduced rate at the hotel so that no one needs to worry about driving. Check out our website’s events section for more details or to purchase tickets. From all of us at the Chamber, I hope you get a chance to relax and engage with your staff this summer, and I hope to see you at our Holiday Party!

Protecting your legal interests is our BUSINESS.

22ND ANNUAL POT OF GOLD CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 22nd Annual Pot of Gold Charity Golf Tournament was held on Tuesday, July 11th at Mayfair Lakes Golf Course. Under blue skies, and with a gentle breeze, 120 golfers teed off in a Texas Scramble event to support local charities. This tournament is organized by the Royal City Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of New Westminster, and also benefits Salvation Army (New Westminster) and Lower Mainland Purpose Society, an alternate education facility. Congratulations to the foursome of Kelly Lum, Sven Haberman, Cal Jang and Doug Rogers who won the tournament with a score of 11 under par. Other winners included Alina Baugh-Allen (women’s KP and long drive), Joe Cox (men’s KP), Aaron Hill (men’s long drive), straightest drives by Richard Tinline and Dawn Shillington. More importantly, the tournament earned net proceeds of approximately $35,000 which is to be shared by the four beneficiaries. All beneficiaries have dedicated their share of the proceeds to programs to benefit youth in our community. Projects to be supported include summer camps, vocational programs, bursaries, leadership retreats and a hot lunch program at school, among others. The total net proceeds of this tournament since its inception is just shy of $500,000. We especially want to thank the many sponsors, donors and golfers who recognize the valuable work the beneficiaries do for our youth in our community. Some of them have supported the tournament from its inaugural edition in 1996, and we are appreciative of their continued involvement. We would also like to thank the organizing committee and volunteers, without whom the tournament would not happen. We hope to see all of you in 2018 for the 23rd Annual Pot of Gold Charity Golf Tournament. Rick Molstad, Chairman, Tournament Committee Adesa Auctions Vancouver Advanced Parking Systems Ltd. ACCESSIBILITY TALK

WHAT’S HAPPENING? Massey Theatre team members want to talk about accessibility and the arts, so they’re hosting two discussions next week and are inviting anyone with a disability or who works with people with disabilities. “In many cases, the benefits of the arts are only accessible to a certain segment of our community,” said Massey executive director Jessica Schneider. She wants to change

that. She envisions the Massey Theatre as a community art centre that offers more than productions, plays and the occasional art show. WHAT DO THEY WANT? They want to hear how the theatre can be more accessible to people with disabilities. As Schneider put it, she wants “direct practical input” and “aspirations and visions.” WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS?

Massey Theatre is planning for the future. The facility is changing hands from the school district to the city as part of the new high school project, and for the folks who run the theatre, this is their chance to reimagine its role in the community.

DETAILS, PLEASE. The first session is at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, and the second session is at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26. Both are happening at the Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave. There will be a short tour of the facility and then there will be a chance to discuss and share input with staff.

Parade of long balls leads New West to B.C.s

Little League sluggers go yard and win at districts, now go toVictoria in hunt for provincial major banner Dan Olson

dolson@newwestrecord.ca

Call them the Bash Brothers. The New Westminster major All Stars showed how the home run is difficult to defend against as they marched through the district playoffs, earning the berth to next week’s provincials. With six weeks of training and team building behind them, the

All Stars unleashed its heavy-hitting arsenal and swamped rival Hastings 18-7 in last Saturday’s final at Justin Morneau Field. For coach Ben Tong, the boost in power over the short season was part of the game plan – but the surge has been a little surprising. “We had nine home runs in the final, and five in the semifinal,” remarked Tong. “We have been a good hitting team, but I never ex-

pected this much (home runs).” Aaron Judge has nothing on these sluggers. Entering last week’s district playoffs as one of the favourites, New West soon found itself in a hole after falling 16-3 to South Vancouver in the opener. They were also edged by Trout Lake, a club that hadn’t won a district playoff game in five years. That seemed to be the bottom

of the barrel, said Tong. After a 1-3 record in the round robin, New West faced No. 1 seed South Vancouver in the semifinal – with one loss ending their season, but needing to beat their rival twice to advance. They responded with a 9-4 victory in Game 1, and then blasted five long balls in a 15-4 mercy win to move on to the final. Against Hastings, New West

struck the first blow against last year’s Canadian champion, when leadoff hitter Brendan Tong knocked the second pitch of the game over the fence. In the top of the fifth with the score tied 7-7, they grabbed the lead for good when Diego Fuentes, Jack Sutherland and Zachary Mankoo strung together three straight homers. Carefully managing his No. 1 Continued on page 31

’Bellies power past PoCo in semifinal sweep

Newcomers play key role in NewWestminster’s rally, clinching a berth to B.C. junior A championship final

Dan Olson

dolson@newwestrecord.ca

Caught in a sudden shootout, the New Westminster junior Salmonbellies at first looked surprised. Then they fired back. Facing a desperate PoCo Saints crew, the ’Bellies took its share of hits before storming back for a 13-10 victory on Tuesday, wrapping up the best-of-five semifinal with a 3-0 sweep. The Saints, with their backs against the wall, made a valiant push and grabbed leads of 6-3 and 8-5 but couldn’t stop the high flyin’ Salmonbellies, who counted five straight goals in a wild second period where momentum changed hands like coins at a laundromat. “We had to grind it out, and like we told the boys before the game, the last win is always the hardest,” remarked New West coach Todd Stockdale. “We had some nerves in the first and PoCo really pressed us, but we eventually got back to our system and got it under control.” Trailing 3-0 early in the first period, New West countered and tied it up early in the second before the Saints went on another three-goal run. Just when it looked like the ’Bellies were reeling, they responded with a couple of goals to make it a one-goal contest. It all came in a flurry when the two teams peeled off seven goals in a span of 3:42. Late in the frame, the hosts scored five straight markers in just 2:38, including two by 20-year-old Larson Sundown that set the tone for the rest of the game. A first-year import from Buffalo, New York, Sundown said while PoCo made it difficult, his club knew what it needed to do. “We started the series knowing it would be tough, but we always knew if we stuck to our system and played the way we know we can play, we’d make it,” said Sundown, a member of the Tonawanda Band. Having played much of his lacrosse in Ontario and NewYork, Sundown said the transition to the west coast has been great. “I love it.This is my first set of playoff series, and I can easily say there’s no better place to play than in New West.” The team’s eastern imports played a huge role in Tuesday’s victory, with second-year ’Bellie and Kahnawake First Nation’s Brine Rice scoring twice and setting up four others, while Barrie’s Nick Chaykowsky, like Sundown, registered a hat trick. Connor Robinson chipped in a goal and four assists, and currently sits second in league playoff scoring. It came on the heels of last Friday’s 10-7

Future dancing partners?: New Westminster’s Connor Robinson, centre, stares down a couple of Coquitlam Adanacs during a regular season encounter. The Salmonbellies have advanced to the B.C. triumph in Game 2, when Rice tallied three times and Robinson a pair. Unlike Chaykowsky, who joined the team four weeks ago, Sundown has spent much of the season in New West, although missing some games due to injury. He said his teammates and the game have made the adjustment that much easier. “I knew there is a rich, rich lacrosse culture that was deep; it was very old,” said Sundown, who in 12 regular season games tallied 20 times. “That was one of the things that really brought me in, being surrounded in a strong lacrosse community, as a lacrosse player there’s nothing better than being in the heart of New West.” The Salmonbellies now await a winner

from the Coquitlam-Victoria series, where the defending Minto Cup champion Adanacs hold a 2-0 lead entering the weekend. In their head-to-head action, New West lost all three games to Coquitlam by three or less; against Victoria, the ’Bellies had a 2-1 edge. Both Sundown and Stockdale feel the important thing will be to focus on their own

effort, and not get too wrapped up on what happened before or what the other team can do. “I think the mentality is going to be the same we bring to every game. If we play the way New West junior can play it is obviously going to be a good match and hopefully we come out on top,” said Sundown.

’Bellies trounce Maple Ridge

New Westminster ventured into Maple Ridge and shocked the defending Western Lacrosse Association champions to the tune of 15-5 on Sunday. The visiting ’Bellies grabbed a 5-0 lead before the game was seven minutes old and contained the Burrards much of the night. Netminder Alexis Buque turned aside 35 shots. New West plays host to the Coquitlam Adanacs tonight (Thursday), 7:30 p.m. at Queen’s Park Arena.

New West homer-happy

Continued from page 30 thrower, Ben Hewitt, with a 20-pitch limit, coach Tong was able to use him in the final three games, where he registered all three wins. By going yard, New West is going to its third straight B.C.s, in Victoria July 22 to 30. Although the coaches strategized and prepared the team to be a hitting-heavy lineup, the dedication and success they’ve shown has been a pleasant surprise.

“Since the all-star season started June 1, over 21 games we’ve hit 54 home runs,” noted Tong. “It’s been phenomenal, and this has been the best-hitting team I’ve coached in six years.” The team took some inspiration from New Westminster slugger and one-time American League MVP Justin Morneau. “Justin sent us a video note saying good luck and get it done,” recalled Tong. “It’s just been an incredible ride so far.”

WAACK, Elenor

December 28, 1936 - July 16, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elenor. Her energy and good nature touched the hearts of those who knew her. Elenor passed away peacefully on July 16th after a lengthy illness. She was predeceased by her husband Henry and her brothers Howard and Roy. Survived by her sons Douglas, Philip (Jodie), Cliff (Barb), Robert (Aida), Richard (Cheri), and Henry Jr. (Andrea); her many grandchildren (Steve, Natasha, Kristian, Sam, Danica, Sydney, Anna and Kyla). Elenor grew up in Standard, Alberta and met Henry Sr. at Mount Royal College. They married in 1957. Elenor lived a quiet life to the rhythms of the Alberta seasons; That is, until her six sons came along. In 1970, she moved the family to New Westminster from Lethbridge, with the anticipation that a new job for her husband at Douglas College would provide a better life for the family. Elenor soon found a job at the “Bella Coola” room cafeteria at Lougheed Mall. It was during that time when she nearly lost her life to a horrific accident. During her eight months in hospital, she appeared to be on some kind of quest; survive and inspire. During her hospital stay, she was often struck by the musings of life. Two things moved us at that time: her will to not only live but to live a life with a higher purpose. Elenor started a new chapter in life, one that modelled her conviction that “through hard work and devotion, we can achieve anything”. With dignity, she returned home with a new lease on life; perhaps to calm her son’s fears. After Elenor recovered, she worked many years at Saint Mary’s Hospital until her retirement. While Elenor may have left this earthly realm; she is looking down wishing us love and happiness. You are forever in our hearts.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
