ROYAL SLAM:
Anvil tower gets a tenant
Clarke Conners, standing, hands Quality a beat-down at the Royal City Wrestling event on Saturday. Thousands of people streamed in and out of Royal City Centre to check out the New West Super Cup wrestling tournament. The Royal City Wrestling event was the first of its kind for the city, and it was a great success, according to Hayley Sinclair, one of the organizers of the event. ‘There’s an obvious interest for this kind entertainment and this kind of competition in our city,’ she said. Highlights included the appearance of Mayor Jonathan Cote, who was there backing up Mr. India in the main event.

An international online gaming company is the first to sign up as an occupant of the Anvil Centre office tower. The tower has been sitting empty since the cultural and conference centre opened on Columbia Street in the fall of 2014. Evolution Gaming is expected to take up one floor of the eight-storey structure to house a 16,000-squarefoot studio that will eventually create 170 jobs. Evolution, along with the B.C. Lottery Corporation (BCLC), announced in April it would be setting up in Greater Vancouver but did not Continued on page 8

Climbing the stairway to … nowhere? Theresa McManus

Should it stay or should it go? That’s a question being pondered about a seeming stairway to nowhere. As part of the city’s decision to demolish a portion of the Front Street parkade, the city built a new staircase in front of a building at 649 Front St.While the stair-
case doesn’t yet connect to the building, it was required to provide a fire escape for the second and third floors of the commercial building. “It’s required by code,” said Jim Lowrie, the city’s director of engineering. “Previously, they had ramps or bridges right across to the parkade. That was their means of egress in the event of a fire.” When the city took down the

They are planning to do some improvements to that building, and if there is a chance that we can piggyback on those improvements, then the external stairs would no longer be required.” The staircase, which cost $200,000 to construct, doesn’t currently connect to the building. “Not yet,” Lowrie said. “We have to remove the overhead utility lines. That work has yet to be

It might be a period of years if we don’t have an alternative solution,” Lowrie said. “We are in discussions with the property owner.

Grey skies can’t stop the fun at Uptown Live! fest Uptown Live! brought the crowds back to New West to enjoy a day of music this past weekend. Organizer Douglas Smith estimated the fifth annual Uptown Live! on Saturday drew 25,000 spectators to soak in 30 musical artists on several stages on Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue. He admitted the precipitation early in the day may have been a deterrent.
“I would have liked Sunday’s weather on Saturday, but, failing that, we still had a great day, and the weather cooperated,” said Smith. He felt some changes to the footprint created a better flow of pedestrian traffic, and the headline act, Daniel Wesley, wrapped up the day in fine fashion. “He really got the crowd going.” For more photos, see www.newwestrecord.ca.
Food trucks set to take over Columbia Street Popular festival expects to draw thousands of folks to sample delights from more than 80 food trucks Grant Granger
ggranger@newwestrecord.ca
After a few years of experimenting with the ingredients, the Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Association (BIA) believes it’s found the right recipe for its flavourful Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Fest. For the fifth time on Sat-
urday, the BIA will put on its popular event, which organizers believe is the largest one-day food truck festival in Canada, along Columbia Street between Fourth and Eighth streets. There will be more than 80 trucks, about the same as last year and more than quadruple the inaugural total of less than 20.The first fest, in 2013, was such a
huge hit the trucks ran out of food in no time, sending the long lines of customers scrambling to the River Market and other Royal City restaurants to quell their hunger pangs. “I think last year we found the perfect balance, where you could go to any truck and there wasn’t a very long line, but still have a huge amount of variety,”
said Angie Whitfield, BIA programs and event manager. “The trucks liked the pace. They were all busy, but there was never a long wait. So to us, those numbers really worked well with the crowds that we saw last year.” Like any good chef, the BIA tweaks the recipe every time it prepares the mix. “We’re just kind of growing on that foodie scene, incorporating more of our members each year,” said Whitfield. “It took a few
years to figure out. We’ve caught up to the crowds. We’re also hand picking our trucks. We look at the trucks
I think last year we found the perfect balance that come back year to year, and we make a point of sourcing the new trucks that are out there, and making
sure the list of trucks that we have are the pro trucks. They know how to handle the crowds. They’re the ones with the great menus and are new on the scene. So we’ve got a really good mix of trucks.” This year’s new twist is the addition of the Vancouver Fashion Truck and Ardillas United Truck. They’ve been added to the mix to tie in with the area’s retail clothing shops such as Mila and Page, Inner Fire Continued on page 4

You have to build it to the standard,” he said. “It’s complicated.” David Sarraf, who owns the 1898 commercial building at 649 Front St., said some people have complained that the staircase is an eyesore, but he doesn’t mind it at all. “It is big.You know what? Compared to what we had before, it’s a beautiful structure,” he said. “It’s a waste of money for the city to take it down.” On a warm summer day, Sarraf spotted people sitting near the new staircase. “Old Crow Coffee, they put chairs and tables there. It was good,” he said. “It was so hot and sunny and people liked the shade there.” If the city decides to move the staircase, Sarraf said he’s

Chuck Puchmayr described the staircase as “a monster” but feels it could become part of the streetscape over time. “Personally, I think it would grow into Front Street. It will become part of the charm,” he said. “It is sure prettier than that parkade.” While some people have suggested a spiral staircase would have been a better fit in the new Front Street mews, Puchmayr said that’s not in the cards. “Unfortunately, the modern-day building code, when it comes to emergen-

Opinion OUR VIEW
One small sign of hope for Anvil Centre
It may be the first tangible evidence that the city’s big dreams for the Anvil Centre aren’t unattainable after all. The first tenant for the office space above the Anvil Centre has signed on: Evolution Gaming will take on one floor of the space that’s been sitting vacant since the centre opened nearly three years ago. The news was confirmed
this week by a spokesperson for Cushman & Wakefield, the company handling the leasing of the office tower. Add in the fact that we’ve been told some other leases are nearing completion, and we have reason for cautious optimism. With emphasis on the “cautious.” It isn’t the first time we’ve heard good news about the shiny new space
that’s become such a recognizable part of the downtown New West streetscape. After all, it was back in June 2013 – that’s more than four years ago, for anyone keeping track – that city administrator Lisa Spitale was predicting that the city would announce some tenancies by the spring of 2014. “The good thing is that is only a few months away
It can’t go on being underused and underoccupied … – you will either be able to quote me on it or have me eat crow,” she told the Record at the time. We won’t ask for any sacrificial feathered offerings.
But we certainly do hope that all the optimism the city has been voicing for years is not misplaced. We love the Anvil Centre. It’s a beautiful facility and an incredible centrepiece for our burgeoning downtown. Its potential – as an arts space, as a conference and events space, and as an office space – is enormous. But it can’t go on being
underused and underoccupied indefinitely. Here’s hoping that the office space will indeed fill up and hit the city’s goal of some $1 million in tax revenue per year. And while we’re at it, we’d love to see that new restaurant sometime soon. Don’t keep us waiting forever, eh? We’re kinda hungry. And we’ve got taxpayers to look out for.
MY VIEW KEITH BALDREY
NDP has hit the ground running It may possess a tiny majority in the legislature, but the new B.C. NDP government has hit the ground running with a speed that suggests a confidence that exceeds the tightness of the seating plan in the house. The new government of Premier John Horgan has been quick to raise social assistance rates, double the financial assistance for those evacuated because of wildfires, fire more than 100 staff thought to be too closely tied to the previous B.C. Liberal government and hire dozens of their own political supporters. It also moved quickly to change top level management at two Crown corporations facing significant financial challenges – B.C. Hydro and ICBC. Although the wildfire emergency situation, necessarily and understandably, has pushed other policy changes into the background, don’t be surprised if there are a whirlwind of cabinet orders and staffing changes throughout the summer as we await the recall of the legislature in September. There has been the occasional hiccup for the new government – Energy Minister Michelle Mungall didn’t know her government had fired B.C. Hydro CEO Jessica McDonald, which was fairly embarrassing, and not all ministry offices are even functional right now – but, by and large, the party seems to be settling into its new role just fine. The same cannot be said about the B.C. Liberals, who after 16 years in power,
seem baffled by what is expected from an Opposition party. Judging by comments by some of their MLAs on social media, they seem mot to have come to grips yet with the political reality that has now taken hold. In fact, the B.C. Liberals should be careful not to repeat a critical mistake by the NDP in the aftermath of the 2013 election. The NDP, for quite a while, seemed to regard the election outcome as some sort of fraudulent affair, and many of their members refused to view the B.C. Liberal government as legitimate. The B.C. Liberals, some of them anyway, seem to be taking the same attitude this time around. They also seem to be struggling with how to attack the new government. A strange news release late last week lambasted the new government over an internal ICBC report that painted a very bleak picture of the Crown corporation’s precarious financial situation and suggested major action – including potentially big rate increases – is required to fix things. The trouble is, the report was commissioned by the B.C. Liberals when they were still in power, and every single problem uncovered by the report occurred on their watch, not the NDP’s. The B.C. Liberals should get their heads around the fact they’re not in government anymore. The other guys are, and they’re moving fast. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

Skateboarders cause chaos
Uptown skateboarders got under the skin of the strata council at Stirling Place apartments on Princess Street in July. The strata presented a 123-name petition to council urging the city to step up police patrols in the area. The skateboarders, who practiced their skills on a section of Princess Street between Sixth and Eighth streets, were causing drivers to swerve and forcing pedestrians off the road, according to the strata. Strata chair David Bruce said residents had appealed to police to no avail. “No sooner have the police gone around the corner and they are back skateboarding again,” he said.

Letters Firefighters, paramedics praised for quick response
Dear Editor: With considerable gratitude, I take this opportunity to thank the New Westminster firefighters, the B.C. paramedics and the ER staff of Royal Columbian Hospital. At around midnight on June 27, my 93-yearold mother-in-law, Dorothy Bickerstaff, was having great trouble breathing and my wife called 911. Within minutes, the firefighters and paramedics arrived. Their confident professionalism and kindness calmed everyone, and they soon got my mother-in-law’s breathing under control and took her to Royal Columbian Hospital ER, where she was looked after with the same kind of professionalism as before. I write this public thanks and appreciation from our family because we, too often, take for granted those wonderful people in our community who are there 24/7 in life-and-death situations to see us through our most difficult moments. After three days in hospital, Dorothy was home, feeling good, happy to be alive and schmoozing with her best pal, Thomas Tabby. Again, thank you all on behalf of our family,. Bill Zander, New Westminster
Human kindness is alive and well in NewWest
Dear Editor: Last week, I witnessed an awe-
some display of generosity from both the Royal Columbian Hospital volunteer thrift shop on Columbia Street and the Treasure Chest thrift shop on Sixth Street. I went to both shops looking for clothes for a single mom with two young daughters, a one-year-old and a two-year-old, who had been evacuated from the 100 Mile House wildfire with no time to bring much along. Both shops gave everything they had at no charge. Also a customer at the RCH store overheard what was going on, and she gave a large monetary donation. The manager at the Treasure Chest also gave a large monetary donation of her own money. The trio are staying at her sister’s house in Surrey and are so thankful to all involved. What a display of human kindness. Dan Garayt, New Westminster

How many streets could be paved for $200,000?
Dear Editor: $200,000 for Bird on a Branch! So, is New West awash with money that we can afford to spend $200,000 on a piece of art? Is that really the most pressing need in New West? I wonder how many streets could be paved for that amount of money? Daycare spaces opened up? I trust with all the excess money we seem to have, our taxes won’t be going up this year? D. City Other leases in process for tower Continued from page 1 say where. Roger Leggett, vice-president of personal real estate for Cushman & Wakefield, the company handling the leasing of the office tower, confirmed it would be at the Anvil Centre. Up until this announcement, Evolution Gaming was based mostly in Europe. It originated in Stockholm and operates live casino games that can be played on desktop computers, tablets and smartphones. When it launches through BCLC’s playnow.com site, the local operation will offer 10 live tables for blackjack, two types of baccarat and two types of roulette, according to press releases from Evolution and BCLC. Players will be able to see
dealers via live streaming. According to BCLC, the games will be available 16 hours a day. The BCLC release said initially 50 local jobs will be created. Evolution’s other studios are in Amsterdam, London, Estonia, Latvia, Romania, Italy, Spain, Malta and two in Belgium. As for the other seven floors, Leggett said Cushman & Wakefield is on the verge of getting some other leases “over the goal line” that would take up a significant portion of the rest of the building. But he doesn’t expect to be able to make an announcement until September.

Vacant space: The Anvil Centre opened in the fall of 2014, but the office tower has remained empty. PHOTO RECORD FILES
The city is proposing the closure of a section of road by Wood and Boyne streets in Queensborough to make way for a new animal shelter. City council has given three readings to a streetclosure bylaw, which would officially close a section of city-owned land current-
ly designated as a road so it can be repurposed to accommodate the city’s new animal services facility. Residents with opinions on the closure will be given an opportunity to be heard at the Aug. 28 council meeting in council chambers at 6 p.m. – Theresa McManus

HAPPY CLIENT COMMENTS:
This is the second time I have had the opportunity of working with Sandy and Lyle in the sale of property. And as with my previous experience, they did not disappoint. Sandy and Lyle are extremely professional, yet friendly and very personable. They are definitely in tune to what’s happening in today’s real estate market and were able to provide me with a very thorough CMA. After some de-cluttering, cleaning, and a bit of staging, my condo was listed, an open house took place over a weekend, and the next day we were dealing with three offers ... all over asking price! If you are looking for a dedicated and honest team, I would highly recommend their amazing service. Any questions or concerns I had were always promptly answered. Their expertise and enthusiasm definitely helped this rather emotional process go that much smoother. And as I am moving out of the lower mainland, I sadly won’t be able to have them help me look for my next home ... too bad as I know they would do an incredible job! Thank you so much once again Sandy and Lyle. You made it easy.
We were extremely impressed with Lyle & Sandy’s enthusiasm in assisting us to sell our property. We live on a busy street, so knew the challenges we would have. Lyle & Sandy gave us confidence that their marketing plan would bring a successful sale. They informed us of the local property market & assisted us to price our home competitively. One weekend, two open houses produced four offers. We sold in one week 4% above asking. Just like that. Couldn’t have asked for a better result. They are a fantastic team. And for a flat fee, no less!! Cudos to them both!!
My experience with Lyle and Sandy has been just wonderful. From the beginning they were very professional, friendly, and very prompt in answering any questions I had. My decision to list with them resulted in significant savings in listing fees, but more importantly, my condo sold in less than a week for more than the asking price. I would highly recommend anyone thinking of listing to consider Assist2Sell and rely on Lyle and Sandy’s professionalism and market expertise to get the job done.

News Charges recommended in lethal drug investigation Cayley Dobie
cdobie@newwestrecord.ca
The person suspected of selling the drugs that killed 16-year-old Angel LoyerLawrence has been arrested and charges have been recommended. Angel suffered a fatal overdose after she and a group of friends bought MDMA, a well-known party drug, the evening of
June 2. A second girl, also 16, survived a bad reaction to the drugs after she was rushed to the hospital. New Westminster Police Department has announced it is recommending two counts of trafficking in a controlled substance against the person they believe is responsible for selling the drugs that contributed to both overdoses, according to a statement.
The announcement comes after more than a month-long investigation into the incident. Police confirmed a suspect was arrested and has been released pending conditions to appear in court at a later date. “It is clear to me that the success of this police operation was the result of the methodical and painstaking team effort on the part of all the investigating offi-
cers,” said New Westminster police spokesperson Staff Sgt. Andrew Perry. “We will continue to work hard to proactively tackle drug dealing throughout New Westminster, and I hope residents can feel reassured that we are taking positive action.” Both girls were students at the New Westminster-based POWER alternate school, a program that
serves vulnerable students aged 16 to 18 from across the Lower Mainland. Angel had only recently enrolled in the POWER program, but her death had an impact on everyone there, POWER principal Steve Inniss told the Record previously. “Angel joined us at POWER only a few short weeks ago, but in that time we were pleased to see that
she had made friends and was making good progress and she was proud that she was on the road to graduation. She was open and outgoing and helpful with staff and students alike. We will miss her very much. Our hearts and our thoughts are with her family and all others with whom she was close and whose lives she touched,” he said.

Car lovers’ paradise: A steady stream of car enthusiasts flowed through the parking lot at the Justice Institute of B.C. on Sunday for the return of the Royal City Show and Shine. Organized in partnership with the Hyack Festival Association, Savi Integrated Marketing and Key West Ford, this year’s event saw nearly 150 car owners take part. ‘It’s growing legs,’ said Guy Ciprian of Savi Integrated Marketing. Organizers are already in talks to host another event next year.

“I came across Bryn’s site looking at online listing.
“We’ve worked with Bryn for 4 transactions, she’s an expert negotiator who is always willing to put in the additional effort to achieve optimal prices, even if there is no benefit to herself. As a seller, I don’t think we could have had a more perfect result, with a brilliant marketing campaign and savvy price-point resulting in multiple offers and sale price $82,000 over asking. As buyers, Bryn has secured all three properties that we’ve bid on, even with aggressive competition. She is a wonderful, honest person who has more integrity than any other Realtor I’ve ever worked with.” L & A.
She asked me if I wanted help and being a first time home buyer and overwhelmed I took her up on her offer. Within a week of having her as our agent we were the proud owners of our first condo in a very competitive market. She was helpful in both being available to answer all of my questions and visiting places. She had great insights on what tactic we should use to ensure we secure our condo with multiple offers. She was really knowledgeable and attentive to our needs and if we ever decide to move she will the first person we contact.” ~ Maria & Luis

PROX:IMITY RE:MIX WHAT THE HECK IS PROX:IMITY RE:MIX? PROX:IMITY RE:MIX is a creation by contemporary dance company MACHiNENOisY and presented by the Massey Theatre Society. The 30-minute dance performance is the culmination of two weeks of training led by artistic directors Delia Brett, Daelik, Sammy Chien and Christopher Kelly. Aimed at queer and allied youth, teen performers are trained in improvisation, contact dance, performance and new media. The goal was
to recreate and transform MACHiNENOisY’s project Law of Proximity, a community-led performance in 2012, where eight youth were mentored in the creation of multimedia dance. TELL ME MORE. Well, MACHiNENOisY’s goal is to foster creation and performances that transcend traditional notions of dance and theatre while PROX:IMITY RE:MIX intends to highlight “the unique queer and queer-allied identities and talents of local youth,” notes a press
release. For Massey Theatre executive director Jessica Schneider, PROX:IMITY RE:MIX fills a void in the arts community. “We’re so happy to have the opportunity to present PROX:IMITY RE:MIX again,” she said in a press release. “It fulfils a distinct need in the LGBTQ+ community and provides a positive opportunity for youthoriented social dialogue and self-expression.” PROX:IMITY RE:MIX was previously presented in New Westminster as part of the Momentum Youth Festival in 2015.

New West Pride Hoedown returns to Century House Theresa McManus
tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
Rhinestone cowboys and cowgirls of all ages are invited to swing their partners round and round at the NewWest Pride Hoedown. The Century House Seniors Gay Straight Alliance is hosting the annual event onWednesday, Aug. 9 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.The free event features square dancing, two-step and line dancing. “People can have fun with it,” said Rob Hughes, chair of the Century House Gay Straight Alliance. “They can wear colourful combinations of Pride and cowboy, that type of thing. I’ve got a rainbow Stetson that I put on. People can get in touch with their inner rhinestone cowboy or cowgirl.” You don’t know how to dance? Not to worry, as there will be demonstrations and folks willing to show you how it’s done. “The callers are the people that lead us through the dance steps. We certain-
ly rely on them to make the event a success. They are good at getting everyone involved and making it easy. You don’t need any experience at all to have fun at this event,” Hughes said. “They teach us as we go along. I have two left feet – if I can do it, anybody can do it.”
It’s from eight to 80 – maybe even younger and older
Normally held during PrideWeek in NewWest, this year’s event is taking place a week earlier than the festival. “We booked the callers right after last year’s Pride Hoedown. It turns out that the NewWest Pride this year is a week later than what we expected,” Hughes said. “It’s basically a pre-Pride event in a sense.” Anne Uebelacker and Darlene Currie are the callers at the third annual New
West Pride Hoedown. Along with dancing, the event includes free refreshments and a 50-50 draw that’s raising funds for the NewWest Pride Society. “We encourage everybody to come check out the event,” Hughes said. The NewWest Pride Hoedown is an all-ages event. “Although it is hosted by a seniors group, it’s something that anyone who is old enough to walk can participate in,” Hughes said. “It’s from eight to 80 – maybe even younger or older.” Century House is located at 620 Eighth St. For more info, call 604-519-1066.

Alliance still going strong
The Century House Seniors Gay Straight Alliance continues to make a difference in people’s lives. When it was founded in 2012, the alliance was the first group of its kind to be based out of a seniors’ recreation centre. “We have monthly meetings during the year.We try and do educational pro-
grams on LGBTQ seniors’ issues. We bring in guest speakers and films,” said Rob Hughes, the group’s chair. “We are also trying to work on doing some more outreach.” Hughes said a gay/straight alliance is a model that’s been successful in schools but also works well in a seniors’ centre like Century
House. “About half of our members identify as LGBTQ,” he said. “About another half are straight allies. They have family or friends that are LGBTQ and they want to support them or just educate themselves more about the issues.” – Theresa McManus

Community Quayside sale scaling back festivities this year Theresa McManus
tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
The Quayside Community Board is scaling back its annual festival until construction settles down in the neighbourhood. Vickie Turvey, president of the Quayside Community Board, said the board feels the festival would not be well attended because of construction in the neighbourhood and along the boardwalk, as well as a lack of parking for a large number of visitors. It’s decided to scale back the event and encourage each strata to take charge and coordinate a garage sale on their own property on Aug. 19. “Once the construction dies down to a dull roar, we will bring back the festival better than ever,” she said. The board cancelled last year’s Quayside Boardwalk Festival and Sale because of logistical issues in organiz-

ing the event, which would have celebrated its 10th anniversary. In past years, the festival has featured a massive yard sale along the boardwalk, food trucks, live music and entertainment on four stages, children’s activities and more. “With 18 member buildings stretching along the Fraser River boardwalk and the tree-lined Quayside Drive, the new Quayside Boardwalk sale is set to become a summer destination for those who love going to

Pop-up fun coming to downtown New West Theresa McManus
AROUND TOWN
tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
Local groups are banding together to put an empty space in downtown New West to good use this summer. Brick & Mortar Living moved out of a space at 50/52 Sixth St. last fall as the space is needed to serve as a display suite for the new development that will be built on the property. Jenn Pistone, one of the owners of Brick & Mortar Living, approached the property owner about using the space that’s still vacant. “They have given it to us to use until the end of September as a pop-up,” she said. “I actually partnered up with the Arts Council of New Westminster. They are filling the space with popups and art. I will be having the New Westminster Art Crawl that is sponsored by Brick & Mortar Living up
there in August. The developers have been fantastic.” Next month, stop by the Etsy Pop-up, an art and design-themed market planned for Aug. 5 (11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.) and Aug. 6 (10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Supplies to cook, clean and season cast iron will be available for purchase before and after the workshop for adults. It’s taking place from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 810 Quayside Dr. Info and registration at www.rivermarket.ca/events. A PEACEFUL PLACE AT HONOUR HOUSE A new garden at Honour House will give women and men in uniform some peace during their stay. Honour House provides a free, temporary home for
members of the military, police officers, firefighters, paramedics, corrections officers, sheriffs, Coast Guard, and search and rescue, as well as retired members of these groups and their immediate families, when they are in the Lower Mainland to receive medical care and treatment. It recently had the official opening of its new Peace Garden, which was built with the help of the City of New Westminster, local unions and businesses, the New Westminster Police Department, New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services and a huge number of volunteers from the city. “The garden itself has been designed to give our women and men in uniform a place of reflection and calm as they go through some of the most difficult times in their lives as they stay here with us,” said general manager Craig Longstaff in an email to the Record.

Society wants to ease the stress of cancer patients Theresa McManus
tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
A new society wants to give cancer patients a lift so they can focus on their health and well-being. George Garrett, a retired award-winning reporter with CKNW, is the vice-president of the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society, which provides free rides to cancer patients needing to get to their treatment and back home again. The group formed after the Canadian Cancer Society discontinued a similar service. “Any family can be struck by cancer. What we try to do is make the situation a little better so the patients don’t have to worry about how they are going to get a ride, how they are going to get home,” he said. “It’s impractical to think about taking a taxi or a bus or anything like that. Really, it has to be a ride provided.” The Freemasons offer a
similar service for patients in Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond and New Westminster. “What we discovered is, yes, they cover New Westminster, but they do not take patients from New Westminster to Surrey where a lot of them, including a friend of mine, have to go,” Garrett said. “We have made about 140 trips in the first six months of this year from New Westminster to Surrey to the cancer clinic there.” In addition to a $30,000 grant from the provincial government, the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society has received contributions from a number of municipalities, fire departments and Rotary clubs. “We started out thinking that $100,000 a year would be fine.We are now looking at $175,000 a year because our demand went from perhaps 100 patients to about 400.We have 100 drivers on
the road now, although we need more,” Garrett recently told city council. “We are making about 500 trips per month to various treatment facilities.” According to Garrett, 92 per cent of the society’s budget is used to pay drivers 41 cents per kilometre. About 16 per cent of its drivers return the funds to the society as a donation. “I can’t say enough about our drivers,” he said, noting some can put in a six- or seven-hour day. “Some of them drive three and four times a week.” Along with drivers, Garrett said the society also needs financial support. Council suggested the society apply for funds through the city’s annual grants program. For more information about the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society, visit www. volunteercancerdrivers.ca or call 604-515-5400.

Why is Noxzema good for sunburns?
We all know there’s no such thing as a “healthy tan or a base tan” to prevent sunburns. It’s important to wear SPF every day regardless of weather and especially in the KATIE MARSHALL summer. Always remember to RE-APPLY sunscreen every 90min all over your body throughout the day, to avoid a sunburn. A sunburn is the skin’s response to extreme ultraviolet exposure and indicates severe damage. When DNA is damaged and its repair mechanisms are inhibited, skin cancer may occur. There is no way to cure a sunburn, once the damage is done. Noxzema is a good, old remedy for sunburns that offers sunburn relief which contains camphor, menthol, and eucalyptus. This will keep the skin moisturized as the menthol is soothing and the camphor is a mild pain reliever.

How will the recent interest rate hike affect the real estate market?
With interest rates rising for the first time in years the summer real estate market is going to get a healthy shot in the arm. The DERRICK THORNHILL truth is, if the cost of borrowing Park Georgia Realty is higher tomorrow than today people will jump off the fence and into the market! I have seen this reaction to increased interest rates more than once in my 25+ years in the real estate industry. Any interest rate increase will throw gas on the already sizzling hot condo market and push the cost of all real estate higher once again, at least in the short term. Hang onto your hats sports fans, things could get very interesting...

Yidoctors (formerly Family Eyecare Centre) has been serving the people of New Westminster for over 60 years, and counting. This dedicated team of eight doctors and thirteen opticians & assistants consistently provides a quality eye care experience to all their patients. FYidoctors’ services focus on comprehensive eye examinations for all ages (from babies to seniors); fashionable, functional eyeglasses & sunglasses; and state-of-the-art contact lenses. With a goal of enhancing and improving peoples’ lives, this patient-centred approach utilizes the latest technology to diagnose, monitor and treat vision concerns and eye diseases. The Doctors of Optometry at FYidoctors are committed to offering the latest techniques and treatments. A new therapy they are very excited about is “Myopia Control”. Recent research shows positive results that this treatment can slow down the progression of myopia (near-sightedness) in young children and early teenagers, and requires the use of either specialty lenses (glasses or contacts) or a special eye drop instilled each night. Controlling myopia is particularly important for long-term eye health, as high myopia increases the risk for retinal detachments, cataracts, and glaucoma. Want more information? Book an appointment for your child’s annual eye examination at FYidoctors. The doctor will happily discuss which treatment(s) might be best, based on the child’s eyeglass prescription, eye coordination, eye focusing and eye health. In addition to serving their patients, FYidoctors believes in giving back to the community that supports them. Their contributions reflect the needs of New Westminster’s individuals and organizations. Currently they participate in two programs that offer eye exams and free eyeglasses for young children; provide free or low-cost eye exams to the homeless and new immigrants; participate in vision screening for children with autism; annually host dozens of eye health presentations and ‘baby talks’ at local pre-schools, daycares, and health facilities; and donate to many local and international fundraisers and charities. A particular favourite in New Westminster is Monarch Place, a transition house for women and children fleeing domestic violence. It is this dedication to community and patient care that reflects this talented group’s motto: “Enhancing Life”.
ASK AN OPTOMETRIST
Q A
What are “floaters”?
Floaters are spots or ‘cobwebs’ that appear in your vision, most commonly as you age, involving the jelly-like fluid filling the eye (vitreous humour). Some people have floaters DR. KELSEY SNOW from birth - remnants of solid material that disintegrates before birth. Also, the vitreous shrinks over time, and may pull away from the inner lining of the eye, leaving one or multiple floaters. Generally, people learn to ignore the floaters, or gravity pulls them out of the line of sight making them less bothersome. Unfortunately, there is no simple treatment. However, if you notice new floaters, or any floaters associated with flashes of light or vision changes, this could indicate a serious problem such a retinal tear, which requires urgent treatment. For any of these changes, see your Doctor of Optometry immediately for a thorough retinal examination.

New West’s foodie history Archie and Dale Miller
editorial@newwestrecord.ca
Articles that include historical connections to food are always popular as people like to find out what was available in the early days of this city and what might have been on the menu. In mid-1867, a member of the colonial government, the man acting as colonial secretary in Victoria, Arthur Nonus Birch, was leaving the colony to return to England and another job. New Westminster officials and dignitaries held a dinner in his honour at the Colonial Hotel on Columbia Street. In the newspaper was a description of the celebration: “Mr. Pons Arnaud, of Messrs. Grelley and Arnaud, proprietors of the hotel, was purveyor of the occasion and we need hardly say that the dinner was most creditable to his artistic skill.” The menu was listed in the paper, and the following selections should give us
some idea of the spread that was laid on for the evening’s dinner. To start things off there were two soups, mock turtle soup (a mixture of organ meats, etc.) and printanier soup (with spring vegetable) as well as two salmon selections, one with hollandaise and another with a white wine sauce. Also available at the beginning was a jellied ham and a tongue dish. The entrées included turkey with a sauce of Madeira and truffles, tenderloin with garden vegetables, brochettes with sauce, and calves’ heads with a green sauce (probably of herbs and spice). There was also a roast course included at this point, which consisted of lamb with a mint sauce and roast chicken with watercress. Getting full yet? Well, there were also quite a number of accompaniments to enjoy with the aforementioned offerings well before the desserts appeared. The list of vegetables included
peas, asparagus with butter, creamed spinach, French beans with white sauce, artichokes with olive oil, potatoes and salads. As a break between the heavier meal dishes, there were three lighter items prior to the desserts. These were vanilla ice cream, pieces of glacée orange and a pear compote. The desserts were strawberries and cream, an array of dried fruits and nuts, Cheshire cheese, assorted cakes and a dish called Cherries de la Capitale. At the bottom of the menu, the requisite liquid refreshments were noted as Alsopp’s pale ale, Blood and Wolf’s porter, Golden sherry,Vin de Preller (a French wine), and for those who wished champagne, Napoleon’s Cabinet and Crème de Bouzl. And so they ate a hearty meal and undoubtedly toasted one another throughout the evening hours at the Colonial Hotel dining room.

Salmonbellies build case for a league crown With one game left in the regular season, NewWest positions itself as serious contender for a Mann Cup run
While popular trends like spiked hair and tie-dye T-shirts had a definite shelf life, the one trend that will never fade is a hot winning streak. The New Westminster Salmonbellies continued to trend in the right direction, boosting their Western Lacrosse Association league record to 10-6-1 with a pair of big wins last week to extend their winning steak to four games. As they wrap up the regular season tonight (Thursday, 7:30 p.m. at Queen’s Park
Arena) against the Victoria Shamrocks, the club’s main aim will be to see this trend carry over to the playoffs, due to start next week. By knocking off the first-place Maple Ridge Burrards 11-7 on Sunday in a repeat performance of a win a week earlier, the ’Bellies maintained their shot at first place in the logjam that is the WLA’s top four teams. New West sits just one-point back of the Burrards, with both teams having just one game to play.
Victoria, meanwhile, is tied with New West with 21 points, and close the regular season Friday at home against the Burnaby Lakers, who are stand three points out of first with three games left. The final standings could remain in flux until Aug. 1, when Burnaby plays Langley in the last game. Although they don’t control their own destiny when it comes to placing, the ’Bellies showed they can control a game by once again taking an early lead and holding the opposition in check.
A 2-1 lead after 20 minutes quickly evolved into 5-1 on tallies by Anthony Malcom, Mitch Jones and Quinn Mackay. Joel McCready and Jones finished with hat tricks, while Kevin Crowley posted a goal and five assists. The Burrards applied pressure during the game, but New West’s Alexis Buque turned back 40 shots. A few days earlier, the’Bellies blasted Coquitlam 14-5, with Logan Schuss and Jones posting six-point games.
Royal City runners set Jamboree pace Dan Olson
dolson@newwestrecord.ca
The track scene continues to thrive in New Westminster. Members of the Royal City Track and Field Club put up strong numbers at the recent B.C. Athletics Jamboree, with numerous medals and personal bests added to the list. Among the top results for Royal City were distance runners Grace Fetherstonhaugh and Kate Stewart-Barnett. Fresh off a 3000-metre bronze medal performance at the Canadian track and field championships, Fetherstonhaugh topped the girls 16-17 division’s 2000m steeplechase with a personal best time of 6:48.43, more than 30 seconds quicker than North Van’s Rhian Paterson. It was also a seven-second reduction on her PB. The New West Secondary athlete also collected silver in the 1500 and 3000m races, trailing Okanagan’s Taryn O’Neill in both. Fetherstonhaugh finished the 1500m in 4:31.49, just 3.57 seconds back of first, and completed the 3000m in 9:45.20, just over four seconds behind the winner. The latter time carved a whopping 46-plus seconds off her previ-
ous quickest time, set just a month earlier in Langley. Stewart-Barnett, meanwhile, was victorious in her 14-15 girls 1500m steeplechase debut, topping out at 5:04.66, two seconds ahead of her nearest challenger. She also finished second in her two other events: finishing the 1200m race in 3:42.25, just half a second back of first, and the 2000m in 6:38.73, just over six seconds out of top spot. Also cashing in for three medals was Jenevieve Patry-Smith, whose gold in the 16-17 girls discus came on a throw of 33.04m nearly one metre farther than the nextbest distance. She also picked up silver in javelin with a distance of 41.27m, and third in shotput. Emily Chilton posted her first sub-60 second time in the 18-19 girls 400m, and scored a silver for her efforts. She also netted a bronze in the 800m. For the men, Finnley Cookson, Nikhil Hirani and Max Jones each achieved silver in their respective events. Cookson and Jones cleared identical pole vaults of 3.20m in the boys 16-17 division, trailing B.C. Flyers’ Ethan Foster’s 3.90m winning mark. Hirani was second in the 14-15 boys 1500m racewalk, with a time of 9:08.05.

Also picking up medals for Royal City were: Brianna Bates, a bronze in 16-17 girls javelin; Jeremy Belcher, third in boys 16-17 triple jump; Zuzanna Liniewski, silver in 14-15 girls discus; Lauryn Savela, bronze in 14-15 girls
javelin; Hannah Sidhu, bronze in 14-15 girls 1500m racewalk; Evan Smith, bronze in 16-17 boys javelin; and Lauren Vanee, silver in 1819 women’s javelin. Other results were: Dierdre Bos, 16-17, 6th discus; Emma Dolman,
14-15, 8th 300m, 300mH; Gavin Fan, 16-17, 9th LJ; Ryan Holloway, 16-17, 4th discus; Ryan Jensen, 16-17, 7th 110mH; Zuzanna Liniewski, 14-15, 9th discus; Lauren Sidhu, 14-15, 9th 300m; Lauren Vanee, 18-19, 4th 100mH.

There’s no doubt Michelle Dadson enjoys collecting medals – but when it comes to her track and field accomplishments, her prize possessions are her personal bests. The New Westminster athlete corralled two more coveted personal bests as well as a prized berth to next month’s Legion NationalYouth Track and Field championships in Winnipeg with her performance last week at the B.C. Jamboree in Coquitlam. Of course, there were three gold medals attached, too. “I love it, just the feeling of throwing (the hammer),” said the soon-to-be 15 year old. “I was under a lot of stress because I just started throwing (the hammer) last year,
and I really wanted to hit (the Legion qualifying standard).” Although she came up short of that mark, reaching a distance of 45.24 metres, with 47.46 required, she blew away her previous best with a toss of 42.05m. A three-event athlete, Dadson also topped the girls 14-15 year old discus, with a toss of 34.49 – another PB by 1.76m – and the shotput. It was in the shotput where she already met the Legion standard at the high school provincials last month with a distance of 13.56, while collecting another gold at the jamboree, with a throw of 13.16m. “Shotput is my best event and my favourite,” the St.Thomas More student said. “I’ve been doing it since I was nine years old, and what pleased me the most was
when it came to championships, I used to not do as well as (regular meets) due to the pressure. “I’m doing much better with the pressure now.” The big leap forward in the hammerthrow likely didn’t surprise her supporters, who include her mom Claudia, older brother Emmanuel – himself a gold medal winner in the boys 16-17 triple jump – and coach Donald Allemeersch of the Vancouver Thunderbirds. “I remember last year coming into practice and the coach said ‘Why don’t we just practice the hammer throw?’ and I was like, ‘OK,’” recalled Dadson. “It took a long time, and I told my mom and coach I didn’t want to do any competitions, but they made me do two.
“In practice, I was hitting a lot of 15 (metre) distances and really not feeling it, and then I suddenly hit a 36m (distance) and felt, ‘That’s good.’” Qualifying for the Aug. 11 to 13 Legion championships in shotput was a special achievement in a year of breakthroughs. “That was a big goal for me, because it’s a competition for 15 to 17 year olds. I wasn’t really expecting it but I was aiming for it.” Dadson reached all these pinnacles despite changing clubs – following Allemeersch to Vancouver from Ocean Athletics – and being forced to train part of the year on her own after the family car broke down. Her coach prepared a training regimen for her to follow, and the teen stuck to it, with the results now on the board. Continued on page 31

’Bellies size up Adanacs NewWest pumped up to take on Minto Cup champs
And then there were two. The B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League playoff final is a match-up of familiar foes, with New West and defending Minto Cup champion Coquitlam squaring off in a best-of-seven showdown. The junior A championship series was on the junior ’Bellies’ radar for nearly a year, and now coach Todd Stockdale says preparation is the main focus for Game 1, which goes Friday, 7:30 p.m. at the Poirier Sports Centre in Coquitlam. “We match up really well, and I feel our team has really grown over the season looking towards this,” said Stockdale. “We really have a mature group, led by our third-year veterans and second-year (returnees).” New West has had to wait the past nine days, having dispensed of PoCo on July 18. Coquitlam completed its sweep of Victoria last Saturday. In head-to-head play, the
’Bellies pushed the regular season champions to the limit but were unable to beat them, falling 9-7, 9-8 and 11-9. Overcoming that hurdle – perhaps a portion of it a mental block, although the Adanacs’ impressive 20-10 record (40-1-0 including last year) reflects their dominance – will take a lot of hard work. “Every game with them was very close, including an overtime loss,” remarked Stockdale. “With (Coquitlam), it isn’t just one guy you focus on. ... They are extremely well balanced.” New West offers up its own list of imposing players,
including two-time scoring champion Connor Robinson, who won the current title with a 33-point margin over the next top scorer. Carter Dickson and Charlie Kurtenbach provide offensive support, while imports Nick Chaykowski, Larson Sundown and Brine Rice have become major contributors. Everyone has taken that next step, said Stockdale. The best-of-seven game series continues July 31 at Queen’s Park; Game 3 is slated for Aug. 2 in Coquitlam. Game 4 goes Aug. 4 in New West, with additional games going on Aug. 7, 9 and 11, if necessary. All games start at 7:30 p.m.
