First baby of 2019 born in New West Chris Campbell

B.C.’s first baby of 2019 was almost named Q. OK, perhaps “almost” is a stretch because the baby’s mom, Janet Shimizu, shut that one down pretty quickly when dad Lukasz Soswa suggested it.

More name suggestions followed until the Coquitlam couple settled on Dominik, who was born at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1 at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster.

“Is it that horrible?” Lukasz asked with a laugh to the throng of media who showed up Tuesday to meet the family.

Dominik weighed in at eight pounds and just over two ounces. He was due on Jan. 1, but Janet went into labour at 8 a.m. on Monday. After painful labour all day, a decision was made to do an emergency C-section.

“He just stayed at five centimetres,” said Janet, who does web development for a private company.

“He arrived right on time,” said Lukasz, a Lang-

ley surgeon who actually did his training at RCH. The couple found out that Dominik was B.C.’s first baby at around 1 a.m.

Lukasz said it was weird to walk into a hospital room and not be in charge. He was told he was going to be a dad and needed to just relax and leave it to the RCH experts.

“I’m just used to walking in there and ‘let’s go,’” he said with a laugh.

The couple said they were happy to have the baby at RCH because of the excellent reputation of its maternity ward.

The couple has received a generous gift basket for having the first baby of 2019 in B.C. Janet had kind words for the exceptional work of the RCH maternity staff.

“Everyone’s been so lovely,” she said.

So far, Dominik is sleeping well and has latched on nicely for breastfeeding.

As far as what happens when they finally get home, Janet has one goal.

“Sleep,” she said. “I just want to sleep.”

New West time capsule from 1989 opened

What will NewWestminster be like 25 years from now? Thirty years from now? Story by Theresa McManus

new year is a time to look forward to changes anticipated in the year ahead, but what if you were asked to predict what the city would look like in 25 or 30 years? How accurate would you be?

Back in 1989, some of New Westminster’s prominent business people and citizens were tasked with peering into their crystal balls and predicting the social, economic and political changes that would occur in the city.

A time capsule sealed on Feb. 14, 1989 as part of the opening celebrations for the Inn at the Quay was intended to be opened 25 years later on Feb. 14, 2014, but it remained sealed until the fall of 2018 after being taken off the wall during a 2009 renovation and placed in storage.

“In the year 2014, New Westminster will be a major regional administrative centre that is home to 55,000 residents,” predicted Betty Toporowski, who was New Westminster’s mayor from 1988 to 1996. “The heritage nature of the community will emphasize the strong community spirit and commitment to balanced social objectives.”

Several common themes emerged among the dozens of entries in the time capsule, with many predicting a reduction in the city’s “excessive” crime rate (clearly an issue of the day), redevelopment of the waterfront, retention of heritage buildings on Columbia Street and cruise ships on the Fraser River.

“A fashionable place to live and work in one area.

Many highrise condos with young demographics, twice the population and a highly capitalistic ideology,” wrote Greg Ericson, who worked at a Burnaby-based distribution company. “Robots everywhere!”

Ald. Mal Hughes – the time capsule was done when councillors were still referred to as aldermen –

was pretty bang on with his predictions, envisioning a convention centre in New West, women working in the fire department, and parks continuing to be a showcase for the city.

“New Westminster will be a bedroom city for Vancouver, with a population exceeding 65,000,” said Gunter Edel, the city’s parks director. “Houses in the Queen’s Park area and condos at the Quay will sell for exceeding $500,000.”

Ian Carter, principal at Waisman Dewar Grout Carter, was on the money with his prediction for the site next to the hotel, where two towers are currently under construction. “Two tall towers will be built on the Westwater site.”

Several entries in the time capsule suggested the city’s population would be between 60,000 and 65,000 in 2014, the year it was intended to be opened. (It was 65,976 in the 2011 census.)

More than a few downtown and Quayside residents probably wish some train-related predictions had come true.

Well-known local businessman Bill Lewis wrote “the railway tracks should be enclosed in the core area” while C.E. Hibbert of the Royal Bank predicted the waterfront would be developed from the Pen site to Burnaby and “all tracks removed.”

“The forestry industry mills will disappear.

Queensborough will be a garden city. Crime will be reduced through television cameras located in key areas.The waterfront will be a major tourist attraction with riverboat cruises,” said Tom Baker, who was New Westminster’s mayor from 1982 to 1988. “The age of our citizens will lower, with more young executive families settling in the city.The NDP will lose control due to higher income residents.

McBride will be redeveloped and traffic flow improved.”

Like Baker, several people predicted the city’s political leanings would move from left-leaning NDP representation to the right side of the spectrum in the decades ahead – including the Social Credit Party provincially and the Progressive Conservatives federally.Wishful thinking by some, perhaps?

manager at the Vancouver Auto Auction in Queensborough, had high hopes for women in politics.

“With extension of SkyTrain, I predict that New Westminster will become a very busy shopping/dining/ entertainment centre,” she wrote. “I also believe that the ladies in government will have a positive effect on the once capital city of New Westminster.”

Dawn Black, who was New Westminster’s member of Parliament in 1988, had big dreams for New West.

“New Westminster will

become, once again, the capital city of British Columbia,” she predicted. (For the record, a couple other time capsule entries also predicted capital city status would return to the Royal City by 2014.)

On the sports front,Tim Enno, executive director of the Hyack Festival Association, correctly (and sadly) predicted the Vancouver Canucks would not yet have won a Stanley Cup, but he was off base by suggesting B.C. would have an NFL franchise. Peter Armstrong, then the executive vice-pres-

ident of Gray Line of Vancouver, felt the B.C. Lions would win the Grey Cup or the Super Bowl – depending on what happens to the CFL. The late Mac Tyler, a lawyer and an inductee in the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, predicted the New Westminster Salmonbellies would win the Mann Cup in 2014.

While many locals wish that had come true, they’re likely pleased that other predictions were quite a ways off base.

D.E. Alexander, a marketing manager based on Howe Street in Vancouver, predicted (tongue in cheek?) that New Westminster would be annexed by the City of Vancouver, while Brenda Jean Stubbs, a secretary with Westwater Industries, feared the city would be recovering from a major earthquake.

“Much of the downtown’s older buildings will be ruined and new ones will take their place with a heritage theme,” she said. “Socially the people of New

West will be pulled together by this event and a real sense of community will prevail. Economically the city will have achieved its place as a major shopping centre with new boutiques on Columbia and the number of people on the waterfront to support them.

Queen’s Park will continue to be ‘the’ place to live in New West although the waterfront and old Pen site following close behind.”

David Cooper, general manager of CooperYachts in Maple Ridge, didn’t hold out much hope for New Westminster, considering it to be mostly “impervious to change,” while H&C Koechl of Martina Enterprises Ltd. in Surrey had lofty aspirations for the Royal City.

“New Westminster will be like the jewel on the Nile, the jewel on the Fraser, with Vancouver as its suburb. NW will be the hub of everything worthwhile happening,” wrote H&C Koechl. “It will be the actual Royal City, placing London, England in its shade.”

Council pushing for inclusionary zoning policy

The City of New Westminster is hoping to make affordable rental housing mandatory in new developments across the city by the middle of 2019.

Last month, city council endorsed a draft inclusionary housing policy and directed staff to apply the draft policy when reviewing current pre-applications or formal applications from developers.

“Housing is going to be one of the most important issues that we work on around this council table and will be one of our top priorities.There is no one single policy that is going to address the affordable housing crisis that we have here in Metro Vancouver, but I do believe inclusionary zoning is actually one of the more powerful tools that local governments do have,” said Mayor Jonathan Cote. “I’m looking forward to seeing this policy work advance, and I think there is going to be a number of

other policy items that are going to be put forward in early 2019 as we here in New Westminster try to address and be a leader when it comes to the housing challenges faced, not only in our community but in the region.”

A report to council states that the inclusionary housing policy aims to increase the supply of new affordable rental housing to meet the needs of very low-income households (under $30,000 a year) and low-income households ($30,000 to $75,000 a year).The report states that an appropriate target rent for those earning below $30,000 is $750, while those earning between $30,000 and $50,00 can afford to pay between $750 and $1,250 and moderate income households can afford to pay up to $1,875 per month.

Municipalities, Lower Mainland Local Government Association and Federation of Canadian Municipalities conferences with strong resolutions to ask senior levels of government to start bringing in laws that will preserve housing and continue to allow for healthy communities.

A staff report states that low rental vacancy rates are making it difficult for renters to find affordable rental units, and there’s an inadequate supply of non-market housing due to a lack of new affordable housing construction over the last 25 years. In addition, the report states that many of the older rental properties are being sold and there is an increasing number of renovictions.

Cote said affordable housing has become one of the most critical issues facing Metro Vancouver and a variety of policy approaches will be needed to address the issue.While there are solutions to be found through all levels of government, he said local governments have an important role to play, particularly in encouraging and mandating affordable housing in new developments.

New West moves ahead with plan for cannabis

New Westminster will soon get to work weeding through applications for cannabis retail shops.

The City of New Westminster was accepting applications for cannabis retail stores from Oct. 24 to Nov. 28, but extended the deadline to Dec. 5.The extension isn’t expected to impact the opening of pot shops, with the first store potentially opening in April or May 2019 “The application deadline was extended because some of the submission materials required had to be obtained from outside sources and institutions, and these groups were having difficultly turning materials around for applicants within the initial application window,” said Mike Watson, a city planner. “This is something which was outside of

the city’s and the applicants’ control and we want to be sure we offer a reasonable timeframe for applicants to submit their materials.”

Watson was unable to provide information on the number of applications the city has received until presenting that information to city council. Despite the extension to the submission deadline, he said staff still intends to report back to council with this information in January.

The city will consider a blend of public and private operators in different New West neighbourhoods, with five expected to open in the first year.

some of those applicants will be.

“I am a bit concerned that most of those applications, quite a few, are from outside the city. I would like

to see the council potentially look at trying to keep that in the city for existing residents and businesses – mainly just for the nuisance and safety and security of our city,”

Goats could be called into action to help with the ecological project that’s underway in Glenbrook Ravine.

Kyle Routledge launched the ecological initiative in 2017, with New Westminster Environmental Partners getting on board in 2018 and adopting it as one of its projects and the Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver supporting the project. During six events held in 2018, volunteers removed evasive plants and started planting native species.

“Overall, I’m very pleased with the progress we’ve made so far,” Routledge said.

“Enthusiasm has been high, which says a lot considering how unpleasant blackberry removal can be.

I know that there have been instances of people meeting each other for the first time in the ravine, then running into one another elsewhere in the community and being able to have a nice conversation because of the work they’ve done together.”

About 125 volunteers from toddlers to folks in their 80s attended events.

Volunteers removed about 350 square metres of Himalayan blackberry in 2018 and about 250 square metres in 2017.

Kim Deighton, the city’s manager of licensing and integrated services, said staff will be assessing the applications based on a criteria previously established with council’s input, which includes 56 points addressing issues such as security, operations and esthetics.

Based on the scores in that process, the top five will go forward to a rezoning process.

“In terms of the application process, initially it was presented to council about doing a lottery system,” said Mayor Jonathan Cote. “In the end, council decided we would be better served by having some merit to be applied.That is where the general, broad evaluation program would be.”

Coun. Chuck Puchmayr said there’s been “quite a lot

of movement” in the community from people trying to secure addresses for potential cannabis dispensaries.

“We can’t discriminate against whether somebody lives in New Westminster or not, whether they have a business,” he said. “We have taken council’s power out of this and we have turned it over to staff with certain criteria. I am very confident they are going to do a good job of bringing that forward.”

In preparation for the federal Cannabis Act, the City of New Westminster developed a regulatory framework that addresses issues falling under municipal jurisdiction, including regulation of cannabis retail locations through the zoning bylaw; business licence requirements for retail locations and for cannabis production, warehousing and cultivation facilities; and public consumption limits through smoking control bylaws.

“You can absolutely see a difference in the ravine, if you are looking at the area where we did the work,” Routledge said. “It doesn’t look as nice in the winter, when many of the native species we planted have lost their leaves, but you can certainly see where the blackberry has been removed.”

Routledge hopes volunteers, including some fourlegged friends, could help with work being planned for

2019.

“Plans for 2019 are to continue on, make more progress on the area we have been tackling,” he said in an email to the Record.

“We hope to grow our volunteer base in 2019 and to have more great community-building success like we have experienced over the past two years. I would really like to get some goats in the ravine to eat away at the blackberry in advance of any weed removal days.”

Jennifer Lukianchuk, the City of New Westminster’s environmental coordinator, is pleased with the “great work” that’s been happening in Glenbrook Ravine, and commended Routledge

and volunteers for their efforts. She noted the city contributed a grant toward the enhancement project.

“You know what I really liked about it? It was a nice community effort and it’s a really nice way for people to connect,” she said.

“They want to do something in the community.

They want to do something environmental. It gives them that opportunity to get out there and be part of something larger, something that is coordinated.”

Latest numbers show opioid crisis isn’t getting better This newspaper published the results of a survey back in November by Research Co. about the opioid crisis.

The survey, in particular, looked at what ideas the general public viewed as needed to deal with the crisis.The most popular idea to deal with the problem at hand, supported by 90 per cent of British Columbians, is launching more education and awareness campaigns about drug use.

So, hence this editorial.

We’re going to keep pounding away until more

people start taking this crisis seriously because, clearly, not everyone is getting the message.

The latest numbers show that there were 120 suspected drug overdose deaths in B.C. in November, representing a whopping 13-per cent-increase over the number of deaths in the same month last year.

The B.C. Coroners Service says an average of four people died every day last month from an illicit drug overdose.

The latest figures show 1,380 people died by over-

dose between Jan. 1 and Nov. 30, 2018, almost exactly the same number who died between Jan. 1 and Nov. 30, 2017.

The service says the majority of those dying from overdoses are men aged 30 to 59, and most overdoses are occurring indoors.The three cities experiencing the highest number of illicit drug overdoses are Vancouver, Surrey and Victoria.

The coroners service says 1,486 people died of overdoses in B.C. last year. It is expected to announce the overall death toll for 2018

sometime this month.

In a recent Research Co. survey, almost two-thirds of British Columbians (64 per cent) describe the situation related to opioid drugs in their community as “a major problem.” It feels shocking that that number isn’t far higher.

So, what are some of the solutions?

One popular idea in the survey is the creation of more spaces for drug rehabilitation, which is supported by 88 per cent of residents. In September, the federal and provincial gov-

ernments announced a $71.7 million investment in what was described as “innovative treatment options for people with substance abuse disorders.”

Two other ideas are also supported by majorities of residents. Almost four in five British Columbians (78 per cent) believe it is time to reduce the prescriptions of opioids by medical professionals, and two-thirds (66 per cent) would like to set up more “harm reduction” strategies, such as legal supervised injection sites.That last item should be some-

thing the federal Conservatives will need to answer for in this fall’s federal election due to their distinct lack of support for something that clearly saves lives.

The most contentious concept, of course, is the decriminalization of all drugs for personal use.

Half of British Columbians (50 per cent) voice opposition to this course of action, while 45 per cent are supportive.

As more people die, we expect the number of people who support decriminalization to grow.

The issues that won’t go away The old adage “the more things change the more things stay the same” could easily apply to B.C. politics, as many of the issues that dominated the past year will surely do so again in the coming year.

Here, then, is a look back at some big issues that simply are not going away: The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.Things have been fairly quiet on this front since the Federal Court of Appeal struck it down and the federal government bought the pipeline. However, rest assured: the protests and arrests will ramp up again as the inevitable construction phase hovers into view.

ICBC.The financial dumpster fire continues to smolder. A rate hike is coming in April, and the rate structure will be radically changed come September.The NDP government claims most drivers will benefit from the changes but you can be sure that literally hundreds of thousands of drivers will be hit hard in the wallet, ensuring ICBC could be a big election issue.

Taxes.Two new ones – the speculation housing tax and the employers’ health tax – were passed into law this year but will really let their presence be known in the coming year.The NDP’s penchant for raising taxes made it unpopular when it formed government in the 1990s, and it will be interesting to see if that holds true this time around.

Thousands of people will be pushed into switching to heat pumps in the home and emission-free vehicles on the road.

The mammoth LNG Canada investment.The facility near Kitimat will begin to take shape, and a project that will spend billions of dollars in this province will start swelling its employment ranks. Over time, this will be the dominant industrial project in the province.

The mystery surrounding the suspensions of the top two officers at the legislature will likely continue for a while. Investigations overseen by special prosecutors tend to drag on for years, and there is every reason to think that will be the case in this situation.

Ride hailing will continue to have a non-presence.

Even though the NDP insists the fall remains a target to get this industry up and running, there is no evidence to suggest that time frame is realistic.

The NDP government spent the latter half of the past year quietly and successfully negotiating a host of collective agreements with public sector unions, but the most challenging set of talks will begin within weeks: a new contract with B.C.’s teachers, who could find themselves on strike yet again come June.

Project restores historic cannons The Royal Westminster Regimental Museum and the Burnaby Village Museum pitched in on a multi-year project to restore a colourful piece of B.C. history: a pair of 1859 cannons brought to the Royal City to protect the province’s original capital from an American invasion.

Professional restorer Brady Foster was tasked with building new wooden assemblies for the guns to replace the 144-year-old teak carriages, and the corroded gun barrels were shipped to Burnaby to be polished so their intricate markings would be visible once more.They guns had once been placed where the south entrance of the Pattullo Bridge is now for firing both up and down river.

ResidentialTenancy Act badly needs an overhaul Editor: Re: Make it easier for landlords to evict tenants to ease rental crisis, Record letters, Dec. 13 I am a building manager of over 20 years, and my wife and I have lived in downtown New West for the past seven.

We have been in the building/property managing industry for decades in both apartment rentals and large strata buildings and have never written about these types of issues before.

We agree that the current Residential Tenancy Act needs an overhaul, to serve the interests of both renters and landlords.

We know of issues where the tenant abandoned their suite and the landlord was left to clean up the mess and also expected to apply by abandonment laws and then go through the process of getting rid of all their stuff.

Who pays him for his time to deal and handle all that? Should renters be allowed to get away with this?

Similarly, trying to evict someone for legitimate reasons is such a long, drawn-out process that it takes money and time – weeks, and even months – before a situation is fully resolved. In the meantime, the landlord is out a month or more rent money.

This totally frightens homeowners who could potentially rent out their suite, as they don’t want to be in a situation whereby they can’t get rid of their delinquent tenant and all the hassles and stress that that entails.

And if it goes to arbitration, there’s the added stress of ensuring the forms are filled out right.

However, on the flip side, there should absolutely be more legislation to discourage or address renovictions.

There are landlords who count on tenants’ ignorance and do things like give their tenants notice to vacate but deliberately refuse to mention to them that they are selling the unit, due to the fact they need to give them two months’ notice, and either last month is free or they return last month’s rent. How is abuse of this aspect of the RTA addressed?

The whole process of renting and then exiting or moving, when issues that are slightly less than ideal occur, is getting more and more convoluted with numerous forms that are, in essence, meant to protect both the landlord and tenant, but there are so many of them now, which makes the process slow, expensive and unnecessarily cumbersome for both the landlords and tenants.

Additionally, the RTA is only as good as it is enforceable. It makes absolutely no sense to have all these wonderful bylaws yet no way of enforcing them, and thereby no consequence to either a renter or landlord to comply.

These abuses and loopholes need to be properly addressed to bring a sense of balance to both landlords’ right to protect their investment and property, and tenants’ rights to being feel free from abuse or threat of being evicted for no legit reason.

Hopefully the new and improved RTA can be much more streamlined and practical for all.

Especially when addressing disputes or issues.

Students show off their business prowess

Watch out, Dragons, you could be getting a visit from some business-savvy elementary students one day soon.

Grade 4 students at Queen Elizabeth Elementary school showed off their entrepreneurial prowess at a special young entrepreneurs fair at the school to close the winter term.The afternoon event was the culmination of two months of hard work by students and two keen teachers.

“It’s to have children explore the idea of business, making their own products, selling their products, and then we donate 10 per cent of whatever we make to an organization,” teacher Beth Minto told the Record.

Preparation for the fair started in early October when vice-principal Isabella Lam pitched the idea to Minto.The fair is part of a program called PowerPlayYoung Entrepreneurs, which aims to empow-

er young people with skills needed to help them succeed in the rapidly changing world.

Minto’s students had to come up with a product, a business plan and a marketing strategy.There was also an element of financial literacy built into the program.

“It’s been wonderful. It’s really neat because it touches on a lot of the core competencies of the new curriculum as well and it teaches them about business,” she said.

“The kids had to take a loan out from their parents, so, whatever they make, they have to pay their parents back and then donate some of the profits to an organization.”

Students chose the New Westminster animal shelter as their sponsored charity and were planning to make their donation in person in the new year, according to Minto.

“I am blown away. It exceeded my expectations.”

Lit society looking for cool ideas for workshops Got some advice or ideas about the fine art of writing to share?

The Royal City Literary Arts Society has issued a call for proposals for interactive workshops to take place in New Westminster.

Some of the workshops will be scheduled for Saturday afternoons at the Anvil Centre, while others will be part of the annual LitFest New West event.

A write-up from the society notes that proposals should be centred on the art of writing.

Topics may include (but aren’t limited to) the business/art of writing, prompts, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, screen and stage.

The society notes that it wants to highlight how diverse the community is, so artists on the LGBTQ spectrum, non-binary artists, artists of colour, Indigenous artists and artists with disabilities are encouraged to submit.

Honorariums will be provided to presenters for their time and effort. Preference will be given to workshops that haven’t been presented in New Westminster over the past 12 months.

Kirkley has been involved in photography for 35 years, starting in the pre-digital era and moving on to digital.The photographs in this show are from the analog era – the subjects being dance students at Simon Fraser University in a newly founded modern dance pro-

Thomson, who completed her bachelor’s degree in dance at SFU in 1982, spent the next 10 years as a Vancouver-based dancer and choreographer. She returned to SFU to complete a master’s degree in fine arts in 1992, including a year in Indonesia studying dance, art practices and culture.

Tellers of Short Tales returns A writer known for tackling tough subjects is the next featured author in the Tellers of Short Tales series.

The Royal City Literary Arts Society is continuing the monthly reading series, which is devoted to the short story genre, on Thursday, Jan. 10 at the Anvil Centre.

This month features Trysh Ashby-Rolls, who has written books, short stories, newspaper and magazine articles and TV documentaries about such subjects as female and male genital mutilation, partners of child sexual abuse survivors, suicide, international parent-child abduction and more.

Her works include the book Triumph:A Journey of Healing from Incest, and the short pieces Travel Blows the Mind: Cautionary Tales (in the book This Place a Stranger: CanadianWomen Travelling Alone) and Unbecoming a Physician (in Walk Myself Home: an anthology to end violence against women).

She recently completed Left Behind Dad:A Loving Father’s Search for his Abducted Daughters.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? The New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society is hosting its annual charity tree-chipping event.

Chipping is by donation, and all the money goes to help the society continue its support of various programs in the community.

WHEN IS IT? The two-day event is on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 5 and 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. It’s taking place at the parking lot at Canada Games Pool.

planning a barbecue, and there will be music and live fire-safety demonstrations going on throughout the day, too. (If you’re lucky you might even get to put out a fire with the fire extinguisher.)

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Greater Vancouver is grateful for the generosity of Piva Modern Italian Restaurant.

Kurt Wipp, owner of the restaurant in Anvil Centre, and his team recently provided a delicious holiday spread for 90 of EFry’s vulnerable women and children clients.

A LIFE LIVED WELL Family members hope to carry on a legacy left by the recent passing of Bud Sage.

Born in the Kootenays, Bud Sage moved to New Westminster with his fami-

ly in 1955 when he was five.

It was here that he attended John Robson Elementary and New Westminster Secondary, met the love of his life, Sue, and raised a family.

“Bud was a man who had unconditional love for his family, friends, and people in general. Almost everything Bud did had some social aspect to it,” said an email from the family. “Whether it was volunteering in Minor Hockey in various forms for over 20 years, dancing as a Royal Lancer, chatting with strangers while walking his dogs

or through the running of his small business that was just as much about seeing his work friends as it was about making a living, Bud was all about building community and making meaningful connections with people.”

A devoted husband and father, family members say Sage was known for looking for moments or situations where he could impart something he learned or used a mistake he made to try and teach.

“When Bud coached hock-

ey, almost every game he would make sure he was there before anyone else so that he could write an inspirational or knowledge imparting message for the team in chalk on the dressing room floor. Some of these messages were the standard cliché sports messages but others tried to focus on important things related to life.

All of these messages written in chalk served as a starting point for the pregame talk that included life and game lessons related

to the messages,” said the email to the Record. “He was a thoughtful teacher and coach.”

Sage passed away Nov. 15 after a battle with cancer. A celebration of Sage’s life is taking place on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Diamond Alumni Centre (Simon Fraser University), University Drive East in Burnaby. In lieu of flower, the family has requested donations be made in Sage’s name to Ronald McDonald House B.C.

When you live and work in a city like New Westminster, the whole idea of a “year in the arts” retrospective brings a particular challenge. How can I look back on 12 months and manage to capture the full range and diversity of talent, dedication and passion that exists in this city of ours? The short answer is: I can’t, really. But I can take time out to acknowledge some of the people and groups who helped to shape the city’s arts, entertainment and cultural scene in 2018.

This year, I’ve decided to pay homage to 10 of those people (and groups).These aren’t by any means the only 10; my longlist would have filled a couple of editions’ worth of newsprint.

But they are 10 outstanding examples of folks who stepped up and made a difference over the past year.

To these folks, and to everyone out there making a difference to arts and culture in the city, I wish all the best for a creative and adventurous year ahead.

1. STEPHEN O’SHEA AND LEANNE EWEN I have to start off the list with this dynamic duo, the executive director and president, respectively, of the Arts Council of New Westminster.The two made headlines just recently for their wins in the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce’s annual Platinum Awards, as O’Shea became the Citizen of theYear and Ewen took home the Bernie Legge Award for arts and culture.The two have become an unstoppable force for growth on the cultural scene in New West.Want to make something happen?

2. CASSIUS KHAN AND AMIKA KUSHWAHA Here’s another dynamic duo: the husband-and-wife team behind the Mushtari Begum Festival of Indian Classical Music and Dance.

The festival returned to Massey Theatre for its seventh incarnation in the fall, bringing the internationally acclaimed sitarist Harvinder Sharm all the way from India to perform. Khan and Kushwaha are world-class performers in their own right, and their talents are only exceeded by their devotion to sharing their love

STEVE CLEMENTS, FRANCES MONTELEONE, KELLY PROZNICK AND LINDSAY WALDNER I’ll wager that at least one of these four – and probably all four of them – read their name in this list and said, “But it’s not about us, it’s about the kids!”Which is exactly why this fabulous foursome deserves the spotlight.The four teachers are the driving force behind the innovative musical theatre program at New Westminster Secondary School that gives students of all ages a chance to learn every aspect of musical theatre production and stage a full-scale musical (2018’s was Crazy ForYou). For inspiring students and changing lives on a daily basis, these four earn my deepest thanks.

4. SUSAN GREIG Some might have seen just an old industrial building in a less-than-attractive part of town. Greig saw potential – and art. Greig has

been running 100 Braid Street Studios since 2014, and this past year she expanded to the upper floor of the building – making it the biggest artists’ studio in the region outside of Vancouver. Besides running a host of events, Greig also lends her support to a host of other artists and arts groups in the city. For helping to make New Westminster not just a home for the arts, but a destination, my thanks.

6. GORDON DUGGAN AND SARAH JOYCE If you’re one of the evergrowing number of people who keep going back to the New Westminster New Media Gallery, then you’ve run into at least one half of this husband-and-wife team.

9. MOLLY MARINEAU Marineau hit the headlines in January as the city’s first-ever Solid Waste and Recycling Artist in Residence, working out of both the Anvil Centre and the city’s works yard to turn recycled materials into art.

She may perhaps be most recognizable to New West residents for her Collec-

tive City Poetry sculpture at Anvil Centre, where visitors helped to turn “found” words into an ever-changing display of poetry. Her art helped raise questions about waste and consumerism, but, more importantly, engaged and involved people of all ages.To Marineau for kicking off the artist-inresidence project, and to the city for starting it up in the first place, my thanks.

ALEX SANGHA Alex Sangha became a film producer in perhaps the worst possible circumstances: after the death of his friend, January Lapuz, who was killed in New Westminster in a brutal attack in 2012. Sangha found filmmakers Lenee Son and Elina Gress at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and together they embarked on the creation of a short documentary film to honour the life and legacy of January.The film, which explores the challenges faced by trans women of colour, has gone on to win multiple awards and has been chosen for multiple film festivals – all thanks to Sangha’s devotion. For his tireless efforts to make sure that January is remembered as more than just a statistic, Sangha earns the final spot on this list.

Sitting at a small corner table in a pub in BadenBaden, Germany last month, I was enjoying a quiet conversation with my aunt, uncle and 11-year-old daughter when my eyes fell on the diners sitting at the table directly across from us.

Around the table was an eclectic mix of guests – what looked to be parents, grandparents, and four children ranging in age from toddler to teen.

At their feet, a large, longhaired dog, sleeping soundly as the group chatted, chewed and chugged their beer.

When seated, I worried we would be asked to leave when the server spotted my daughter with us, but I quickly realized that in this small German town, children were allowed – and welcomed – everywhere we went.

From the world-famous

thermal spa – which allowed children ages eight and up to join in on the relaxation water therapy – to the street-side pub patios, children were present.

In the department store, a winding staircase and long wooden slide were in the centre of the shoe section, providing a play space for children to enjoy while their parents shopped. In the corner of many restaurants, a basket of toys, and outside many pubs and coffee shops, children played hopscotch or tag while the grownups enjoyed some adult conversation nearby.

Until this trip – my first visit to Europe – I had always thought that there was a time and place for the presence of kids, but after seeing a society that allows children to be completely immersed in the community, I realized that maybe we should be doing things a little differently here in Canada.

Coming from a generation in which “children should be seen not heard,”

my instinct has always been to quiet my kids and limit them to only the most kidfriendly places. But perhaps instead of keeping kids away from the more sensitive scenarios, we should

As we look through the history of the Royal City, we can safely say that year by year, from this community’s 1859 start right up to the present day, local citizens have marked the new year that the past year certainly seems to have gone by quickly.

Even though the many events, celebrations, and festivities have changed somewhat over the decades, there is a similarity to be found in how people have said goodbye to one year and welcomed the next. In thinking about the various things that have taken place in New Westminster as part of NewYear’s Eve gatherings, we have noted a number of popular ways to toast the event.

Drinking a toast to the new year has always been popular. Saluting friends and family with wishes for health, happiness and good fortune are a part of most parties and dinners.The celebrations can be simple

and quite private, or large, elaborate, and open to the entire community.

Some years, being outside at midnight, probably with a large bonfire, was a favourite thing to take part in and to enjoy.

Sometimes the New Year’s evening celebrations included music in some form.There might have been a concert followed by food, drinks, and sometimes dancing. Maybe the music was with a choir and it occurred at midnight to bring in a new year with harmony and excitement. Also it was frequently possible to find a band out on the streets filling the town with songs and friendship.

There were church services in the early evening or at midnight with sermons, prayers, and lectures filled with best wishes, replete with encouragement for a good life dedicated to other citizens, and service to the community.

And perhaps this is why the children that crossed my path during my visit to Germany were so comfortable, polite and welcomed in public spaces – because they were just always allowed to be present.

No side glances from strangers, or anxiety from parents to keep them hushed and hidden.

It’s time for society to be more accepting of children, and for children to be more adaptable to society.

If we make more places kidfriendly, and teach our kids to be place-friendly, perhaps we can be a more inclusive culture as well.

Be it individuals or teams, New Westminster had its share of big sports stories in 2018. From track and field to the gridiron, returning champions displayed enormous character and determination to return to prior heights – sometimes successful, sometimes not.

It’s time to put a wrap on a year where promise, potential and heartache had their moments.You can’t win them all, but putting your best to the test is the sign of a winner any day of the year.

Whether it was in Kansas State or Canadian colours, New West’s Nina Schultz continued to do what she does best – break records.The 19-year-old NCAA sophomore represented her school and her country well in a year of great accomplishments. Schultz built upon a standout freshman track and field debut by helping the Kansas State University Wildcats to a hot start and a great finish.The heptathlete and pentathlete would refresh her personal bests in nearly every event, including the seventh-best all-time pentathlon score in NCAA indoor history in February, while establishing a new Canadian under-20 national record as well, at the Texas Tech Shootout. In the first two meets of the indoor season, Schultz won each event entered to help position her team well for a run to the nationals.

She’d finish second at the NCAA indoor finals in March, carting off All-American honours as well as a number of PBs and school records. A month later, Schultz ventured to Australia where she picked up a silver medal in the heptathlon at the Commonwealth Games. At the event, the Canadian put up a bevy of personal bests, including a 100-point improvement on her previous mark, as well as PBs in the 100m hurdles, the 800m, the long jump and high jump.

Schultz wasn’t 100 per cent healthy but did contribute as the Wildcats repeated as Big-12 outdoor champions in preparation for the nationals. And while she didn’t match her amazing freshman performance in 2017, when she was the heptathlon runner-up at the NCAA championships, the New West native was still impressive. Schultz finished seventh overall, scoring 5,778 points despite lingering effects of injury and taking first-team All-American honours.

She’d cap the year by receiving the Canadian National Federation’s under-20 Athlete of theYear award.

Repeating as champions, it’s been said, is harder than winning it the first time. For the New Westminster Hyacks football team, it is something they can attest to.

New Westminster’s Justin Morneau officially hung up the baseball cleats in January, putting the wraps to a career that covered 14 MLB seasons, 247 home runs and 1,603 runs batted in with three teams.The longtime Minnesota Twins first baseman, who won the 2006 American League MVP award, ended up joining the Twins organization’s management department… New West Secondary’s wrestling program enjoyed a big reunion in February to celebrate backto-back championships, but also mark the history of the trophy that is the coveted prize for grapplers around the province.The hefty hardware, which is an ivory statue of two Greco wrestlers, was a donation back in the early 1970s from New West resident HarveyTuura, following the program’s first of two-back-to-back titles… Ending a 10-year drought, the Douglas College Royals men’s basketball team stormed past the Vancouver Island Mariners 96-85 to win the PacWest championship. Grant Campbell, a fifth-year forward, counted 24 points en route to being named the tourney MVP. Earning all-star nods were Kameron Johnson and Reese Morris… Hyack Swim Club’s Peter Huang and Madisen Jacques carved out a host of new records at the B.C. Tier 2 swimming championships.

Huang, 12, set new national marks in the 100- and 200-metre butterfly and 800m freestyle events, while Jacques did the same in her division’s 100m fly… New West’s Nicholas Susanto racked up a u-13 badminton provin-

cial title in both singles and doubles.

His older brother, Franklin, ran the table until the final, finishing second in u15 doubles… Earning silver at the provincial track and field championships in the junior javelin was NWSS’ Lauryn Savela, while placing fourth were teammates Ella Foster, in senior girls pole vault, and Ryan Jensen, in 110m hurdles. St.Thomas More athlete, and Royal City track club member Kate Stewart-Barnett, meanwhile finished second in junior girls high jump and fourth in the 3000m race… The United Rugby Club’s under-23 men’s team rolled to a B.C. title with a 64-5 decision over Capilano.The New West-based squad capped a tremendous season in which the program found its game in recruiting players like New West’s Scott Bowers… Shasta Trampoline Club’s Declan McLean teamed with Nova Scotia’s Kai Dwyer to collect bronze in men’s synchronized trampoline final at the Junior Pan American championships… The New Westminster Salmonbellies celebrated another of its greats in 2018, retiring the No. 10 jersey of Dave Durante.The onetime ’Bellies legend was a dominating force during much of his 20-year WLA career… Sara Bergen and Florenz Knauer caught the big prizes, but New West’s Lilly Ujfalusi was a hometown favourite at the second annual New West Grand Prix.

Just 14, Ujfalusi showed composure and cycling smarts in finishing second in the youth women’s race. Bergen topped the elite women’s division with a powerful finish, while Knauer successfully defended his 2017 title…

The Douglas College Royals women’s

volleyball team were on a roll right to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championship final, where they fell 3-1 to long-time rival Vancouver Island in a rematch of the provincial final. At the provincials, Douglas swept Vancouver Island 3-0. Second-year right side hitter Vania Oliveira was named MVP of the provincials and would add a CCAA All-Canadian honour, while libero Claudia Corneil joined her on the national first all-star team...

New West’s Kyle Carragher catapulted to a pair of golds at the Shasta Club’s Aaron Johnson Memorial Cup and Trampoline Provincial Cup in Burnaby. Carragher topped the senior men’s national individual trampoline and double-mini events, while teammate Sam Smith won the senior women’s individual trampoline title… It was a familiar gold for New Westminster Hyacks senior wrestler Sammy Sidhu.The dual sport athlete repeated as the 84-kilogram B.C. champ. Picking up silver was Isaiah James in the 130kg division, while Yanni Angelopolous, in 110kg, Daniel Dordevic, in 130kg, and Hosein Shidfar, in 78kg, collected bronze… Despite a disappointing early semifinal exit to the Western Lacrosse Association season, New West Salmonbellies’ Logan Schuss and Mike Messenger walked away with league hardware. Schuss picked up the Commission Trophy as the league MVP, the Denny Huddleston Memorial Award as the league’s leading scorer, and the Three Star Award.

Messenger was chosen the Gordon Nicholson Memorial Award recipient as the league’s top defender.
