Watchdog group calls on B.C. to slash gas taxes

As gas prices balloon and British Columbians plan summer road trips, a watchdog group is calling on the provincial government to slash fuel taxes.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation held a press conference at a New Westminster gas station Thursday to call on NDP Premier John Horgan to eliminate the carbon tax and slash Metro Vancouver’s TransLink tax.

“A lot of folks, as we’ve heard over the last several weeks, are finding it difficult to fill up their vehicles,” the federation’s B.C. director, Kris Sims, said. “These are people who are commuting into work, they’re dropping off their kids at school, they’re picking up groceries, and now a lot of them are hoping to plan for their summer vacations.”

If gas costs $1.69 per litre, 54 cents of that goes to various taxes, according to the CTF.The carbon tax accounts for 8.9 cents, while the provincial excise tax and TransLink tax account for 8.5 cents and 17 cents respectively, the group claims.

Taxes on a litre of gas in Metro Vancouver have risen a total of 2.5 cents since 2018, Sims said.

Sims said the province should eliminate the carbon tax and the excise tax and slash the TransLink tax by almost half to 10 cents per litre.

“We, as always, are calling for lower taxes on gasoline, not higher,” she said.

The Record requested an interview with Bruce Ralston, minister of jobs, trade and technology. He didn’t respond by deadline, but a spokesperson issued a statement attributed to Ralston. According to the statement, gas prices have risen by 40 cents in B.C. over the last three months while the carbon tax has only risen by one cent.

“The other 39-cent increase is going to oil and gas companies who are gouging British Columbians.This kind of proposal (from the CTF) will not bring relief, but instead, as many experts have said, would act as a giant subsidy to the oil industry. Additionally, it would result in massive cuts to important services and transit investments that people de-

But Sims said TransLink is an overfunded organization that could afford losing revenue from the gas tax by cutting executives’ pay.

“We think they need to do better budgeting,” she said. “We think that they need to live more within their means.”

The fuel tax covers approximately 26 per cent of TransLink’s operating budget, according to Jill Drews, a spokesperson for the transit authority.

“A seven-cent-per-litre cut suggested by the CTF would mean massive cuts to current service levels when overcrowding is already a

problem,” Drews said.

The motor fuel tax that funds TransLink will increase from 17 to 18.5 cents in July to close a $30-million funding gap for service improvements, she said.

That money will cover more than 900,000 bus service hours, new express BLine buses, a 40 per cent in-

crease in SkyTrain service along the Expo and Millennium lines, $75 million in road improvements and “much-anticipated SkyTrain extensions in Vancouver and Surrey,” Drews said.

“This expansion will not be possible without the fuel tax increase,” she said.

The City of New Westminster is trying to make the road less bumpy for residents wanting speed humps to tackle traffic in their neighbourhoods.

A speed-hump policy, which was endorsed unanimously by the city’s neighbourhood traffic advisory committee, outlines a process for evaluating and implementing speed humps.

The intention of the new policy is to allow residents to initiate low-cost and lowimpact vehicle speed reduction on local streets with a reduced administrative process. Steps in the process include: having residents voice a formal concern to the city by filling out a form; getting staff to collect traffic counts, analyze that information and determine if speed is a concern and humps are a

suitable solution; and having residents survey neighbours on their block to determine the level of support for the installation of speed humps (at least 50-per-cent support is needed).

Staff noted there’s often a diversity of opinion in the community about whether residents support having speed humps.

“It enables us to say the majority of people on the street support this measure, there’s been a process around it, it’s a consultation process,” Lisa Leblanc, the city’s transportation manager, said about the support needed for humps to be approved. “It just enables us to put any concern or disagreement to bed.”

Coun. Mary Trentadue said the policy will be helpful as community members often wonder how they can get speed humps on streets in their neighbourhoods.

She thinks it would be interesting feedback to find out how many speed humps are rejected because they don’t get enough support from neighbourhoods.

While staff had recommended council endorse the proposed speed-hump policy, council referred the policy back to staff and the appropriate city committees to ensure renters, not just property owners, are engaged in discussions about potential speed humps in their neighbourhoods.

Barring any unforeseen activity, Leblanc said staff’s plan is to report back to council on May 27 and provide clarification concerning input from renters. She said the intention has always been for the policy to be inclusive of renters, but that wasn’t made sufficiently clear in the report considered by council in February.

The federal government has confirmed what students and parents have known for years: Stephanie Musgrove is an exceptional teacher.

Musgrove, a kindergarten teacher at Lord Kelvin Elementary School, has received a regional certificate of achievement from the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

New Westminster-Burnaby MP Peter Julian presented the award to Musgrove on Tuesday morning on behalf of the Parliament of Canada.

“It’s just crazy. I do feel very special. I am part of this amazing district,” she told the Record. “We are surrounded by amazing teachers everywhere. Our province, our district and this school is so chock-ablock full of great teachers – if not for them, I wouldn’t be the teacher that I am.”

The award presentation was broadcast to TV screens

in classrooms via the Lord Kelvin news show, which presents news to students twice a week.

“I am very proud of you,” a student reporter covering the award ceremony told Musgrove. “I have always known that you were an awesome because you were my kindergarten teacher.”

Lord Kelvin parent Eden Fine Day got the ball rolling by nominating Musgrove for the award and having other parents on the Parent Advisory Council and principal Ken Millard write letters of support.

“She is such a caring teacher. It comes through in every way possible – with the parents, with the students, with the staff,” Millard said. “You can always count on her to show her love one way or another. She’s a pleasure to work with.”

Coun. Mary Trentadue, a member of the school’s parent advisory council, said it’s amazing for students to have a teacher of Musgrove’s calibre for their first

“She is the most amazing teacher. Having her for my son’s teacher for his first year in school made a huge difference to him and to us as a family,” said Trentadue.

“She understands children, and she sees the best in your child, and she helps you help them through school and going through the process of their first year.”

Musgrove was informed by her nominators that she

was being nominated for an award, but she didn’t know which award until she received an email telling her she’d been selected for the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

While she’s known about the award for a while, she was thrilled to finally be able to celebrate her achievement with her family, co-workers and students on Tuesday.

Musgrove has taught in

New Westminster for her entire career, working at Hume Park Elementary for 15 years and moving to Lord Kelvin nine years ago.

She was touched by the comments made by parents who nominated her for the award.

“I wept. It was amazing,” she said. “You want to make a difference, and my mission in life is to have every kid come in to school and be so excited that they can’t wait to come back.To have them say 10 years later, ‘I remember you’ or ‘thank you’ or they still love school, that’s all I wanted to do.”

A write-up about Musgrove’s certificate of achievement states that she accepts each child for who they are.

“Teaching in a multicultural school, Stephanie Musgrove makes all children in her class feel welcome and comfortable.

Students learn about the places in the world where their families come from,” said the write-up. “She also taught the entire class sign

language to communicate with a young boy who was profoundly deaf.”

Aside from a variety of activities aimed at including inspiring every child in the classroom and making them all feel important, Musgrove was recognized for a number of outstanding achievements, including: ! Being instrumental in setting up the school’s sensory room to help students with sensory needs be calm and alert; she visited other schools with similar rooms, researched what items were needed and then helped set up the room. ! Creating a Literacy Leaders program for the school, in which Grade 5 students visit the primary grades daily to lead literacy games in groups of three or four. ! Being a leader in her school in a number of ways, including running the annual Terry Fox assembly (including usually having one of Fox’s relatives come speak at the event).

Next time, New West must get it right the first time

Here is a simple adage when it comes to politics – if you’re going to make history and ruffle feathers, make sure you also get it right.

The City of New Westminster is learning this lesson the hard way after passing its bylaw aimed at protecting the city’s rental stock.

In January, council adopted a zoning amendment bylaw that designated 12 city-owned properties and six private properties for residential rental tenure.

The city was the first B.C. municipality to apply a new rental residential tenure zoning authority to existing rental housing stock.

The city rightly received publicity over this historic decision.Tenants and affordable housing advocates praised the city’s move.

But not everyone was happy with New West.The owners of the buildings impacted by the change and representatives from the development industry argued there were inaccuracies in bylaw 8078 and asked the

city at a public hearing to put the plan on hold for 90 days so there could be more consultation.

City council didn’t listen.

After council approved the zoning amendment bylaw, the registered owners of all six strata properties petitioned the Supreme Court of British Columbia to declare bylaw 8078 illegal and/ or void, to impose an order quashing the bylaw and to pay costs of the legal action.They allege city staff had provided “false, incomplete and misleading infor-

mation” in relation to the purpose and effect of bylaw 8078 to both the petitioners and to tenants living in units in the six buildings.

A May 6 report to council states that letters from the city to owners and residents of the affected properties as part of the consideration of the bylaw 8078 “incorrectly stated that the effect of the bylaw would be to prevent the units from being individually marketed for sale.”

“The city does not have, through the enactment of

zoning regulations, the authority to restrict the sale of stratified residential units, though other legislative tools exist to create such restrictions with the agreement of the property owners,” said the report. “The city has filed a response to the petition, which concedes the inaccuracy of this information.”

Ouch.

This blundering raises all sorts of questions, including if the city rushed all of this through in order to be the first in B.C.

The city and its politicians had to know this bylaw would be challenged in court.They needed the entire process to be airtight, and they failed.We’ll see if the city’s actions to fix these errors – including bylaw amendments and a further public hearing – will fix the situation because there is a lot at stake.

In the meantime, New West politicians need to ask hard questions of their staff about how this happened and how they will ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Moving depot is a huge mistake I’m writing to you for the first time because I find myself wanting to make everyone aware of the seemingly hidden facts about the new pool and the displacement of the recycling depot.

Only when I went to the open house that was held in Queen’s Park on Easter Sunday did I “discover” the facts about our depot. A very nice drawing of what is being built to “replace” our depot was on display, but only when you ask where it’s being built do you get the response of, “on the other side of the bailey bridge.”

To which I said, “That’s in Coquitlam.”

Yes, our depot is being replaced with the depot the Tri-Cities are building for themselves to accommodate their three cities. And so we, NewWestminster, hopped on board and added our citizens to the tens of thousands already wondering how busy this new depot is going to be.

The selling point our city was making is that we, who live in NewWestminster, are closer than all the people in the Tri-Cities, who are paying for the bulk of its construction.

So we get to save a few thousand here and there, but what we’re losing is so much more – never mind the absolute nightmare the traffic will be trying to use the new depot, commuters trying to get to the bridge and the passing trains creating a headache for anyone wanting to do a quick dropoff of recycling.

The recycling depot, as it sits, is the most central lo-

cation it could be with easy access.

Prior to the depot being there, we had a real problem with people dumping their debris wherever they could get away with it.

Particularly in the ravine –the road goes right by it, and, with only a short fence, it was a dumping ground for the less caring and downright lazy.

I would hate to see us return to those days, but human nature, as always, tends to do the shortcuts, whether that’s sweeping debris under a tree, in the park or down the ravine.

We, as a city, (could) end up spending more on cleaning up these messes than we would/could save by closing our depot.

I say we leave it where it is and have fewer parking stalls.That is all that’s going to be there when it’s done and dusted.

Aesthetics may be driving this, because who wants a dump in front of the new pool?

I’m appalled at the way this has been handled – never a mention of the recycling depot in all the surveys that I filled out.

I certainly understand the need to replace the old pool with a new one that, on the surface, looks great, but where was the conversation about the depot?

No one mentioned this during the last election, but I’m pretty sure it will be in the next.

I’ve lived in NewWestminster all my life, seen lots of changes, but this one makes no sense.

Lost man robbed in NewWest Things got scary for a 32-year-old Burnaby man when he strayed across 10th Avenue into New Westminster one night in October.The man was driving a co-worker home to Delta at about 3:30 a.m. when he got lost and pulled his 1990 Toyota Corolla over on 10th Avenue at Sixth Street to check a map.Two men promptly jumped in, brandished a handgun and robbed the pair of their wallet and purse. I visited our local cemetery and found it was in a deplorable condition Editor: I visited Fraser Cemetery and the grave of my great-great grandfather, buried there in 1915.

This grave also contains the cremated remains of my late husband, who was interred there nearly 10 years ago. I attend periodically to clean the marble grave marker and place flowers, and I was so very upset to find the cemetery in such a deplorable condition. It reminded me of those old, old abandoned church cemeteries that are no longer maintained.

The grass desperately needed cutting and was liberally interspersed with dandelions, other weeds and mounds of dirt left by resident moles.

While I don’t expect the cemetery staff to care for the grave markers, the foundation stone was covered with dirt and gravel, as well as dead leaves and overgrown grass – which under past circumstances would have been removed.

Further, given we are well past the date where we might expect frost, I was also angry to find that all the water taps on the site were still turned off.

A kind visitor directed me to the water fountain near the caretaker’s office, where I was able to get water for my flowers.

On my last visit, I found one lonely gentleman in the office and he indicated that they were short of workers, which could explain that the grass needed cutting even at that time.

It appears that is still the situation, and this is so very disappointing given that tax dollars are

typically allocated for cemetery maintenance and particularly given that this was the day before Mother’s Day, when many visitors are to be expected.

I very much hope that this beautiful property will soon get the care it so richly deserves, especially since it is home to the graves of so many of the pioneers and leaders of the City of New Westminster, the place of my birth.

Maybe when all you young people “walk in our shoes” you will understand.

If you have driven across the city from the west end, and down through Braid subjected to the rail crossing, which is quite often shunting, I can hardly think that someone thinks that will be convenient.

Please, we voted people in to run our city, not change it.

Man spots friend’s stolen dirt bike in New West Spotting the bike was a chance in a million.

When Liam Robertson made his way home from Surrey to Vancouver on Saturday, May 18, he never expected to see his friend’s stolen dirt bike alongside Stewardson Way. But that’s exactly what happened.

“I still don’t really believe it,” he told the Record.

“I’m still blown away.”

Robertson was able to get footage of two people pushing a dirt bike on a trail next to Stewardson Way on his

helmet cam. He thought he recognized the yellow on the bike from a picture his friend had posted on Facebook of his dirt bike, which had been stolen six days ago.

“Honestly, I just got really lucky,” said Robertson, adding he took a different route home that day.

He decided to get a closer look at the bike and rode onto the trail just as the two people were attempting to get it through a broken fence.

“I pretended I wanted to help them,” he said, explaining he wanted to get video

New West wins the Walk30 challenge New Westminster has walked its way into winning the Golden Shoe for the second year in a row.

Burnaby and New Westminster residents competed in the Walk30 Challenge, with New West once again winning the Golden Shoe.

“In reality we have all won, as across both communities more than one million minutes of walking were logged by community members this year – 300,000 more minutes than last year’s challenge,” said a press release from the New Westminster and Burnaby Walkers Caucus. “On average, participants walked 40 minutes per day, compared to 27minutes per day during last year’s challenge.”

In addition to bragging rights and the Golden Shoe award, Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley issued a challenge that would see the “losing” mayor don

Mayor Jonathan Cote thinks the Walk30 Challenge is a fun challenge that helps New West and Burnaby residents get out and enjoy their walkable communities. He’s pleased with the response from local residents who got out and won the challenge for New Westminster.

“It’s just a fun way for the community to get engaged in how we can build more walkable communities and get residents to get out there,” he said.

“If it means the mayors have to get into wrestling pants and help out the communities then we are prepared to do that.”

Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 8123, 2019 Residential Rental Tenure WHAT IS BYLAW NO. 8123, 2019 ABOUT? The purpose of the bylaw is to further amend New Westminster Zoning Bylaw No. 6680, 2001 in relation to residential rental tenure. The proposed bylaw would continue the residential rental tenure zoning designations for land at 214 Agnes Street, 215 Tenth Street, 514 Thirteenth Street, 211 Eleventh Street, 425 Twelfth Street, and 723 Twelfth Street enacted by Bylaw No. 8078, 2019. All of these properties are currently occupied by rental apartment buildings. The amendments would make it clear that the residential rental tenure restriction would apply to any multi-family residential building that may in future replace a building that currently occupies any of these properties, as well as to the existing buildings, and that the rental tenure restriction does not apply to non-residential uses in the buildings.

It’s a long process,” he says.

But once an illusion works, and he can hear the “ooooohs” of wonder from his audience?

“That feels great. It’s a very satisfying moment which brings the creativity full circle,” he says.

And, yes, the odd time, an illusion won’t quite work as planned.

Beckman shrugs.

“It’s not the end of the world,” he says. “It’s all about creating a memorable evening of wonders.”

Beckman is hard pressed to pick a favourite illusion but says the one that creates the biggest buzz is making people’s faces disappear from their driver’s licences – and switching them with other audience members.

“It’s an interesting way to connect with strangers,” he says.

That audience interaction is important to Beckman.

“I like when the show is about the audience, and less about me,”

he says. “I want them to be immersed in what they see, not just see it with their eyes.”

The world of magic and illusion, he says, taps into something very primal in humans.

“It’s a very unique art form. It’s very ancient. People have been performing it for thousands of years,” he says. “It can be light, it can be fun, or it can be very deep, even life-changing.”

Beckman notes there are two main types of people in an audience: those skeptics who spend their time trying to figure out how the illusions work, and those who sit back and simply enjoy the wonder.

For the skeptics, he says, “skepticism is their mechanism to cope with what they find possibly threatening.”

And for the others?Well, suffice it to say Beckman’s shows often end with audience members in tears, overcome with emotion.

“I feel like the whole reason why we admire wonder and magic is because we don’t know the most basic answers to the most basic questions:Why are we here?Why are we here for such a short time?” he says. “Life is fleeting.Wonder is fleeting. It’s beautiful, but it can be so sad.”

Beckman says he’s thrilled to have the chance to perform for hometown crowds, given that he’s spent so much of his time touring and performing in the U.S. and South America. He’ll spend the summer developing new illusions and honing his ever-changing show, while also working towards some other goals – he has ideas for a TV series, he’d love to go back to Broadway, and, of course, he’d love to take on LasVegas.

His ultimate goal?

“Take over the world,” he says, deadpan.

But he promises he’ll use his magic powers for good.

Hometown boy will headline Uptown Live Theresa McManus

Uptown Live 2019 will be a little bit country, a little bit rock ’n’ roll – and a variety of musical genres in between.

The annual street party and music festival returns to uptown New West on Saturday, July 20 from noon to 9 p.m. Along with music on four stages that will showcase some of the top emerging talent in B.C., Uptown Live will have a “beverage service area” featuring a variety of craft beers, food trucks, interactive exhibits and artisans.

The Chris Buck Band, which has been nominated for multiple B.C. Country Music Association Awards and won Album of theYear in 2017, is headlining this year’s lineup. Buck’s selftitled debut album and hit That’sWhenYou Know had four million streams and was added onto to more than 75,000 playlists on Spotify, along with being nominated for the Canadian Country Music Association’s Video of theYear.

“I’ve been waiting for this show for a long time! I moved out here from Ontario and went to F.W. Howay Elementary School and New Westminster Secondary School and have never done a major hometown show. It’s been such a journey, and now we get to play in my backyard,” Buck said in a press release. “I hope to see all of New West out for this one.”

Other acts taking to the stages at Uptown Live include Kadooh, Ludic, Redwoods, Robert Connely and the Dirty Dirty, and Antoinette and the Latest.

“Uptown Live has become a premiere event on the summer music calendar.We have built a reputation for showcasing the best emerging talent in B.C.,” said festival director Douglas Smith, who produces Uptown Live on behalf of the Uptown Business Association of New Westminster.

“It’s amazing how artists’ careers have taken off since debuting at Uptown Live.

We are delighted to provide a platform to showcase their talents.”

Smith believes organizers have done a great job of curating artists for Uptown Live’s four stages with the support of Live Acts Canada and The Live Agency. He said the performers have a range of sounds, with some being rocky and others more folky.

“It’s a little more eclectic in terms of the musical sounds, maybe,” he said of this year’s lineup.

“We like to mix it up.We don’t like to have everything have a certain sameness to it. In our lineups we do tend to try and balance things out with a little bit of everything.

“We have definitely got some bands that are doing sort of the electronica kind of thing. Some are more rock. Some are more melodic in terms of the singersong writing. Most everything we do is trying to get bands playing original music.That’s really the key.”

Community Dress codes shouldn’t be about ‘distraction’ Mommy’s GROUNDED Bianca Bujan

When it comes to implementing dress codes in schools, I agree with setting certain guidelines and encouraging students to dress appropriately for the classroom setting.

What I don’t agree with is telling our daughters to stop donning certain duds because they are distracting dudes.

I remember reading an article back in 2017 titled Dear principal who flagged my daughter’s dress code violation, in which a mother shares a cheeky letter aimed at her daughter’s principal on Today.com. She explained the challenges some parents face when trying to abide by the conservative codes set out by many schools.

The author, Catherine Pearlman, invites the principal to take her 13-year-old daughter – who stands fivefoot-seven-inches tall – on a shopping trip to find what has been deemed “appropriate” clothing.

The important point she makes is summer clothing made available to tween and teen girls is mostly comprised of short shorts, spaghetti strap tank tops, and yoga pants.To find other options is a near-impossible feat.

Add to that the picky preferences of a growing teen girl – no dresses, nothing pink, purple, or covered in frills – and you’d be strapped to find anything suitable for summer wear in school.

While the author of the article makes a good point about clothing marketed to our daughters, there is a more important message shared at the end.

The author concludes with a sarcastic, “P.S. I forgot to thank you for making it clear to my daughter that her body is somehow

I thought she might have missed the message earlier in the year when the gym teacher told her she couldn’t wear yoga pants because the boys aren’t able to control themselves. I appreciate how hard you are working to drive the point home.”

It’s this message that I especially don’t like.We are telling girls not to dress a certain way because it distracts the boys, when really we should be teaching them how to dress appropriately – for no one but themselves.

The message shouldn’t be to dress a certain way because it causes others to act inappropriately, it should be to dress appropriately when you’re in certain situations for your own benefit.

Just as you wouldn’t wear a crop top and cut-offs in a corporate boardroom meeting, the way one dresses for a classroom setting should coincide (at least somewhat) with what is being done in class.

Studies have shown that dressing for success is more than just an adage.When people dress well for work, their productivity goes up, as does their confidence.

That being said, there are dress codes that are totally outdated and in need of a refresh. Boys need be brought into the conversation, too.

Not only should they be taught which behaviours are and are not appropriate when it comes to how they treat girls, but there should be dress codes put in place for them as well.

If we’re going to put dress codes in place, let’s do it for a purpose to praise, not to prevent perverts from pawing when they see the sight of skin or a peekaboo bra strap.

Margit Sky Project at the Columbia Rock, folk, Celtic and country are all part of the mix when the Margit Sky Project takes to the stage.

The musicians are onstage Saturday, May 25 at the Columbia Theatre.

The Margit Sky Project is made up of the core duo of Margit Gossage and Rod (Little Sky) Bandura, who are partners on stage and in life.

“When you hear them play, the close connection between the two will leave you wanting to hear more,” says a write-up about the show. “The songs are delivered with a strong power of emotion whether they are the band’s original songs or cover tunes.”

Gossage, who was raised in Toronto and then Vancouver, took up the guitar after moving to Kamloops in 1992. She built a successful career as a local musician and hasn’t looked back since her first gig at Sun Peaks Resort.

Arts & Entertainment Maple Leaf Singers at the Massey They’re coming to the stage with an uplifting message for an uncertain world.

The Maple Leaf Singers are bringing their 51st annual show, Don’t Stop Believin’, to the stage at Massey Theatre on May 25 and 26.

The singers are known for their high-energy choreographed performances as they deliver a repertoire that runs the gamut from Broadway and movie musicals to rock and pop, classical, folk and gospel.

Don’t Stop Believin’ promises good vibes that span the decades from the 1940s right through to the 2000s – from artists such as Bobby Day, Marvin Gaye, the Beach Boys, Neil Sedaka, Journey, the Rankin Family and Secret Garden, to name but a few.

The Maple Leaf Singers celebrated

50 years of performing in May 2018, and they launched their 2018/19 season under new director Rob Gillis, attracting nearly 20 new voices to the group.

Gillis is the son of the Maple Leaf Singers’ founders, George and Marie Gillis.

“I’m thrilled to be moving forward with this talented group of performers,” he said in a press release. “The dedication, the energy at every rehearsal, every show, leaves me excited for the next, and our audiences let us know that they feel the same.”

Life on the picket line inspires production When professional actor Allan Morgan hit a dry spell, he did what most actors do: he got another job.

As it turns out, that job would inspire a new piece of theatre – and you can see it onstage at the Anvil Centre Theatre May 24 to 27.

IWalked the Line is a 70-minute autobiographical solo show that follows Morgan’s transition from unemployed “downtown gay actor guy” to suburban union hall mailroom clerk.

Morgan is a longtime Vancouver actor who has been on stages around B.C. and worldwide, including several seasons with Bard on the Beach.Then, when that dry spell came, he took a position in the mailroom of a union headquarters building.

In July 2016, Morgan and 54 other employees found themselves in an unfamiliar position: on the picket line. As employees of a un-

ion, they were locked out by their employer and then hit the pavement in a strike.

“Over the past two years, IWalked the Line has emerged as a passion project and a means to process the experience Allan shared with his union sisters and brothers,” the release said.

“In 70 minutes, he takes the audience on a roller coaster of emotions, sharing what

it was like to be on strike, to find strength in community. He transforms the stage to the picket line in order to celebrate the solidarity, remember the people and reveal the storm of emotions that the fight brought to all those walking for 132 days.”

The production is directed by Ross Desprez, with set and costume design by Margaret Handford, lighting design by R. Robinson Wilson and audio design by Tobin Stokes.

IWalked the Line is onstage Friday, May 24 to Monday, May 27. Showtime is 8 p.m. on May 24, and 2 p.m. on May 25, 26 and 27.

’Bellies ready for season opener

New Westminster Salmonbellies’ general manager/president Dan Richardson is feeling pretty pumped these days.

And the success of his favourite hockey team, the Boston Bruins, is just part of the reason.

Richardson’s Salmonbellies are about to venture on a journey that hopefully lands in a Mann Cup series, where west meets east for national lacrosse bragging rights.

Although there’s a lot of things that need to go right before that September showdown, the New West GM feels confident that, on paper, his team is on the right track.

“We’ve done the (off-season) work, now it’s up to the players,” said Richardson.

The 2019 Western Lacrosse Association season kicks off tonight (Thursday, 7:30 p.m. at Queen’s Park Arena) when the ’Bellies host the Langley Thunder.

No matter how you slice it, every game is important in a short,

18-game season, he noted.

“I think the players all know what has to happen to (get to the Mann Cup),” said Richardson.

“There’s definitely a sour taste left over from last year’s early exit, and this being the franchise’s 130th season we feel there’s a job we need to complete.”

The recently announced signing of hometown product Kevin Crowley, who won’t be available until a month into the season, has upped the anticipation for fans. Not to be ignored was the club’s additions from eastern Canada, in the form of veterans Austin Shanks, Darryl Robertson and rookie Jeff Henrick.

New West also acquired defender Justin Salt in a trade with Burnaby.

“We have pretty much all our new guys in, and I know our leadership is good at incorporating new players,” remarked head coach Rory McDade, in his second season behind the bench. “I think we’ll have a little more transition to our game, and we’ve got good depth on the backend.”

Although league scoring champion Logan Schuss will miss the first few weeks due to injury, as will Salt, Richardson believes the overall depth in the lineup can pick up any slack.

“These points early in the year are as important as those later,” he noted. “We want to win every series (between clubs) so you have to get your wins whenever you can.”

New West rolled to a regular season title in 2018, going 15-3.

But it’s the 4-0 sweep at the hands of Maple Ridge in the first round which resonates the most.

Playoff success is the focus and why the team has been able to attract the imports they’ve added.

Richardson, who grew up as a Bruin fan during the era of Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito, says he remains loyal to his teams through thick and thin.

It’s the kind of trait that gives the’Bellies an extra boost down the stretch.

For Kaitlyn Hanger, Christina Heslop and Kosta Adzic, three times was the charm at the Burnaby-New West district track and field championships, held earlier this month at Burnaby Central and Swangard Stadium.

The trio picked up three gold medals in their respective senior division competitions, leading some impressive results over the three-day event.

Hanger, of New Westminster, topped the high jump with a distance of 1.70 metres, reached 7.96m in the shotput, and hit 37.83m in the hammerthrow.

Burnaby Central’s Heslop carted off first-place results in the senior girls’ 1500m, 3000m, as well as the 1500m steeplechase.

Adzic, of Burnaby Mountain, claimed gold in the senior boys 800m, the 1500m and the 3000m.

PATTENAUDE, Renneth Hope (nee Knudsen) Renneth Hope Pattenaude (nee Knudsen) passed away Saturday, May 18, 2019 at age 95 years in Kelowna B.C. Survived by her Son Terry Pattenaude, Grandson Michael (Jennifer), Great-grandson Caleb, Aunt Emily Aronsen and many other relatives and friends. Predeceased by husband Lawrence and parents, Stanley and Nora Knudsen. She was born December 12, 1923 in New Westminster B.C. She spent her early life growing up in New West and spending time at her grandparent’s farm across the Fraser River with her uncles and cousins sharing many happy memories. She was married to Lawrence in 1943, and raised their son Terry in New West among beloved family and lifelong friends. She cooked many suppers alongside mother Nora and aunt Emily for this close-knit group of family and friends at their weekly get togethers. Widowed at a young age in 1971, Ren was left on her own with her son Terry. Their home on 11th Avenue was a favorite spot for Terry’s friends to come due to Ren’s making it such a great place to be, as was anywhere Ren was. After Lawrence’s passing Ren went back to work after being a homemaker for many years at Woodwards Department Store in New West working on the Food Floor at the cigarette counter.

She enjoyed her working time there making many more friends of whom she kept in touch long after retiring. After retirement from Woodwards she moved to Kelowna in 1990 to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law, Carol. She enjoyed happy years in her complex on Lanfranco Road participating in many activities like Canasta and suppers with her neighbours at the clubhouse. She kept busy volunteering at Kelowna General Hospital with the ladies Auxiliary into her 80’s. She also knitted and baked gifted her creations to many.

Ren was a December baby and had a lifelong love of Christmas. She was known for her wonderful sharing of dinners, decorations, baking and her Christmas cards which she sent every year until this past December at age 95. To those all around her however, Ren herself was the greatest gift of all. Her love and devotion to her family and friends, generosity, warmth and unfailing kindness made her a person that was truly cherished by all around her and made friends everywhere she went. She was also a person who faced challenges and struggles over her 95 years with dignity and strength especially overcoming the multiple losses of her husband Lawrence, father Stan and uncle Roy Aronsen within a span of 18 months in 1970-1971.

QUINN, Rose Mary Rose Mary Quinn, who was born on February 1st, 1928, passed away peacefully on May 10th, 2019 at the age of 91. Rose was predeceased by her loving husband, Morris Quinn, sisters Kay Martin (Bert), Jeannie Hammill (Syd), Peggy Gordon (Ray), and brother, Alec Henter (Kay). Rose will be lovingly missed by her six children, David (Karen), Norman (Dale), Maureen (John), Jennifer (Bill), Cheryl (Stewart) and Wendy (Nilton), her 11 grandchildren, 5 greatgrandchildren and many extended family and friends. She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humour, her gracious appreciation for family and all those who lovingly cared for her at New Vista Care Home. Rose especially enjoyed playing cards, visiting with family, singing songs and listening to music. Rose’s devotion to God was a great comfort to her at all times. Listening to verses from the bible and listening to and singing her favourite hymns provided peace and joy throughout her life and especially in her final days.

A Celebration of Rose’s Life will be held on Friday, June 14th, from 2-4pm at Connaught Heights Pentecostal Assembly (2201 8th Avenue, New Westminster) followed by refreshments at the Church. Donations to Alzheimer Society Canada, will be gratefully accepted in lieu of flowers.

SPEKAT, Sieghard “Siggy” Johannes On Thursday, May 9, 2019, Siggy Spekat, loving husband and father, passed away at age 82.

Siggy was born on August 2, 1936 in Germany.

Following two of his older brothers, Siggy immigrated to Canada in 1956, arriving first in Montreal, then on to Ocean Falls, BC, where he met Mum. He married Monica in 1963, and together they raised their three children in New Westminster.

Ren was a lifelong animal lover enjoying many pets especially her cats and a supporter of the SPCA. In lieu of flowers donations to the SPCA are greatly appreciated.

Ren’s family wishes to acknowledge and extend their heartfelt gratitude to her friend Sandi Ratcliffe, who lovingly helped Ren in her last years. Her assistance supported Ren and her family, allowing Ren to maintain independence in her own home which was so important for her and where she was truly most comfortable.

Siggy was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz and Frieda, and by his brother Winrich. He is survived by his loving wife, Monica, his three children, Sean (Sandra), Siobhain (Scott G), Gerlind (Scott Q), and by brothers Meinhard and Fred (Magrit), and sisters Konnie, Christfriede and Gerlind, and nieces and nephews in Germany and Canada.

Burial Service Tuesday, May 28/19 at 12:00 pm at the Graveside at Fraser Cemetery 100 Richmond Street, New Westminster B.C.

A Celebration of Life will take place in early August 2019, announcement of date and time to follow.
