Council paves way for two cannabis stores Theresa McManus tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
Two pot shops have cleared one of the hurdles on the path to opening in New West. New Westminster city council held public hearings on Monday night related to two cannabis shops proposed in the city, Muse Cannabis at 532 Sixth St. and Westcanna at 710 12th St. Following the public hearing, council approved zoning amendment bylaws
for both locations. At Monday’s public hearing, about a dozen residents from both neighbourhoods spoke about the proposed cannabis stores, with most opponents citing concerns about exposing children to cannabis. Sandra Lum, who lives directly behind the 12th Street location, voiced concerns about increased traffic and parking issues in the alley by the shop and negative impacts on children.

“I am not against it. I just think there is a time and a place. This is not the place,” Lum said. “There are too many children, too many schools.Too many daycares.Too many young people in the alleyway playing.” Christopher Bell said there has been a “complete absence” of consultation with neighbours living around the proposed cannabis shop locations. He suggested the city pause the process to make time to meet with residents to en-

sure their concerns – real or irrational – are addressed. New West resident Michael Johnstone said he’s “not the biggest weed guy,” but he does make a 40-kilometre round-trip trek to Vancouver to buy marijuana that he casually smokes at home with his 65-year-old mom. While people think that bringing in one or two weed stores is going to ruin the community, Johnstone said people who buy and smoke weed aren’t breaking into buildings or
cars. “I can promise you people it’s not going to bring a whole bunch of crime to New Westminster,” he said. “It has been here for years.” Allowing weed stores to open in New West isn’t going to ruin the community, Johnstone said. “We have a mayor that wrestles. We have a crosswalk that is rainbow. We have everything we need. We need a weed store,” he said. Continued on page 3

City Beat DEVELOPMENT
Council approves 29-storey condo tower Theresa McManus tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
New Westminster city council has given the green light to a 29-storey highrise on Sixth Street despite the objections of some of its neighbours. Twenty people spoke at Monday’s public hearing regarding Orr Development Corp.’s proposal to build a mixed-used development at 616 and 640 Sixth St.The project includes 142 market strata residential units, 95 secured market rental housing units, 12,384 square feet (1,250.55 square metres) of at-grade commercial and a publicly accessible plaza near the Sixth Street and Seventh Avenue corner of the site. Area residents attending Monday’s public hearing told council the building is excessively tall compared to neighbouring buildings, will displace beloved businesses like the Waffle House, New West Cobbler and Lifetime Eyecare, and will exacerbate safety concerns by putting more than 300 additional cars on Princess Street. “Princess Street is too narrow for a big increase in traffic,” said Ron Finlayson. John Lynn said Seventh Avenue is 48 feet wide and has traffic lights at both ends of the street, while Princess Street is 27 feet wide and has T-intersections at either end of the oneblock street, both with rightout-only turn restrictions. Lynn said the original plan was to provide access to the proposed tower on Seventh Avenue, but the city opted to move it to Princess Street to “prioritize the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists on Seventh Avenue,” which is a greenway. Lynn said that means the seniors living in the

My point here is city council shouldn’t be creating winners and losers – you are throwing Princess Street under the bus.” New West resident Brendan Vance urged council to support the project, saying it
would increase the number of rental units in the uptown and make it more attainable for people who want to live in that area of town. Bart Slotman, vice-president of the Uptown Property Group, said the project is appropriate for the site from a land-use perspective in terms of its height, density, access points and urban form. He said it also fits into the site’s existing highrise zoning, addresses the housing crisis by increasing the supply of units and improves the economic viability of the uptown by putting more bodies on the street. “The economic viability of the uptown, let’s just say

it has stalled. It could use a shot in the arm,” he said. “It could use the densification of the area and utilization of the density that has already been entitled there.” In a 6-1 vote, council supported a zoning amendment bylaw for the project. Council members said the project provides more housing options in the uptown, creates housing in an area that hasn’t seen new development for several years and helps with economic development in the uptown. In response to concerns about pedestrian safety on Princess Street, staff will be considering the is-
sue through the city’s annual pedestrian-crossing improvement program. That will include a review of the existing mid-block crossing and the potential need for a new crossing. Orr Development, which will own and manage the rental component of the building, proposed separate entrances and amenity areas for the rental and strata residents, saying it’s being proposed to ensure it’s able to do maintenance and repairs on the rental components without having to wait for the strata to contribute funds. Angela Sealy appeared before council to protest the
segregated entrances, saying it shouldn’t happen in any building in New Westminster or Canada. She said cost-sharing agreements can be implemented to tackle that issue – without segregating strata owners and renters. “It is not a good thing,” she said. “It is not the way to go.” Coun. Jaimie McEvoy, the lone councillor to oppose the project, agreed. He said it is long established that “separate is not equal” and he doesn’t believe separate spaces are required for maintenance purposes. “In researching this issue of ‘poor doors,’ I cannot get past my concern about this,” he said. “I realize at this point that my vote in opposition would effectively be a protest vote, but I looked up poor doors – there is a definition of poor doors. This is it, this is the definition.” Mayor Jonathan Cote said the project fits in with city’s vision for the uptown neighbourhood, which has only seen about two highrises developed in the past decade. While the rezoning is seeking a greater height and density in this application, he said the city has long contemplated consideration of a highrise at this location. “The reality is the uptown is a higher-density, mixed-used neighbourhood. I think that’s what makes it such an attractive place and such a convenient place for many people to be able to live,” he said. “The existing site is already zoned for highrise. The OCP (official community plan) designation contemplates a highrise.”
More steps involved in getting cannabis stores finalized Continued from page 1 Coun. Patrick Johnstone (no relation to the speaker) said he appreciates that some people feel very nervous about the change that’s happening across the country. “This isn’t something that is going to stop at our border. This is something that is going to be happening across the region,” he said. “It is a legal product.” Coun. Mary Trentadue
said she’s confident the regulations for the store owners are pretty strong and place a lot of responsibility on them regarding their customers and what occurs inside and outside their stores. Because these businesses are going to be the first in New West, she said there is going to be a fair amount of eyes on them to make sure they do follow the rules. “I think having businesses like this out on main streets
where people are walking by is actually helpful to the businesses and keeps an eye on it,” she said. “I don’t want to see these kind of businesses hidden in back alleys and in industrial areas where they are not safe.” Mayor Jonathan Cote said he appreciates concerns related to the new type of business operating in the city. He said it was the federal government’s decision
to legalize cannabis and it’s the city’s responsibility to regulate that legal substance in the community. “The closest framework we found is how we regulate and monitor liquor stores. I do recognize there are differences, but there are also a lot of similarities there,” he said. “In the end, I think we did develop a very robust framework.” The city received 22 applications for cannabis retail
stores, ranked the applications and selected five proposals for different commercial areas for consideration. Public hearings for the other three applications that made the cut will be scheduled when the city receives the results of their financial integrity and security program checks from the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch. While council approved the two applications at
Monday’s council meeting, there’s still a series of steps that applications must complete before the shops open, including finalizing the process with the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch, finalizing the business licence, obtaining building permits for any tenant improvements, ordering stock and hiring staff.

MOODY PARK ARENA PARKING LOT CLOSURE
For more information on any of these events, please visit www.newwestcity.ca/events
Please be advised that between July 8, 2019 and approximately October 30, 2019, there will be no parking available between Moody Park Arena and Massey Theatre. This is required to accommodate the installation of major underground utility and road works for the New Westminster Secondary School replacement project. At the completion of this work, the parking lot will be redesigned to improve vehicle flow and new expanded sidewalks will be installed to allow for increased pedestrian traffic. Work is being completed in a phased sequence to ensure public safety and to maintain pedestrian and vehicle access to the site at all times. During this time, no parking will be available in this lot (see map on right). Alternate parking will be available behind the arena and theatre. Marked drop-off zones will also be created near the front of the arena (Note: these zones will change depending on the sequence of work). Traffic personnel will also be on site during the day to help guide vehicles and pedestrians. Moody Park Arena users should plan to arrive early for lessons and programs as parking will be limited and will require a short walk to the facility. City Drop seen in dumped carts: city
Pay hike is passed
Theresa McManus tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
Theresa McManus tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
A local man is celebrating a “win” for Queensborough residents courtesy of the folks at city hall. Bill Plummer contacted the Record last summer to voice concerns about the number of shopping carts that were being dumped in ditches and abandoned on the side of the road under the Queensborough Bridge. He also reported the wayward carts to the city through its SeeClickFix app. In January, Plummer took his concerns to city council and urged the city to take action. He noted it wasn’t unusual to see a dozen discarded carts in a three-block section of Boyd Street in Queensborough. Plummer is thrilled to report the city was able to get Walmart at Queensborough Landing to install a depositbased cart system – a move he calls “a win” for Queensborough. City staff contacted Queensborough businesses whose carts were being
NewWestminster city council has approved a pay increase – but it may not put much more money in their pockets. A consultant recommended city council increase its pay to offset changes to federal taxation changes, with the mayor’s annual salary increasing to $130,000 (from $106,034) and councillors’ remuneration rising to $50,000 (from $43,180) to ensure their pay is comparable to similar municipalities and reflects the impact of recent tax changes. (Those changes removed a tax exemption on one-third of elected officials’ pay.) “Last year, when I looked at the salaries, it actually showed that our salaries were pretty much in line with comparable municipalities. I think the reason the increases are being suggested is a lot of the communities have been making adjustments given to the tax changes that occurred this year,” said Mayor Jonathan
CARTS: The city is reporting fewer of these have been seen. found on the streets and ditches and used “a compliance-orientated approach” to address the issue, which has led to a noticeable reduction in the number of abandoned shopping carts. Aaron Hilgerdenaar, the city’s supervisor of street use enforcement and animal services, said people would take the shopping carts from the businesses’ private

property and they’d end up on sidewalks and ditches throughout Queensborough – something that was costly for businesses and for the city’s engineering operations staff, who would retrieve, transport and store the buggies. “In this situation, we worked with the management team at Walmart to come to an equitable resolu-
tion for everyone involved,” Hilgerdenaar said in an email to the Record. “This resulted in a coin-lock system being implemented for their shopping carts.” Hilgerdenaar estimates the city has found 75-percent fewer carts in ditches throughout Queensborough since the new system was introduced at Walmart.
Cote. “Although these do represent increases in mayor and council salaries, I think the net salary is actually pretty much the same as last year given these changes.” On Monday, council approved staff recommendations to: approve the recommended adjustments for its remuneration retroactively to Jan. 1, 2019; approve continuance of the city’s current practice of providing annual Consumer Price Index adjustments to council remuneration in the years between reviews; and approve a city review of the remuneration every four years in the months before an election, with the next review to be done in 2026. As part of the review, NewWestminster mayor and councillor pay was compared to Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Port Coquitlam, Delta,WestVancouver, Langley Township, the District of NorthVancouver and the City of NorthVancouver. The consultant found New Westminster “was very close to the middle of the market” in 2018.

Opinion OUR VIEW
With parklet changes come some responsibility When the new skate park opened recently in New Westminster, some clown decided to deface it with graffiti offering up a critique of the park. This led to the city having to spend money to clean it up – money that could go to other things that benefit youth. That’s the unfortunate part of any public park or structure – some people just love to mess with them. Take, for example, the controversial Belmont Street parklet. The city is taking action
to “refresh” and redesign the parklet due to a series of issues ever since it opened. The city received a petition signed by 120 residents, businesses and business patrons expressing “distress” over the activities in the parklet. While the uptown parklet has been a popular place for some residents to sit and relax, it’s also been a place where some people smoke, drink and congregate in the evening after hours. The original design had a “porch and lawn” con-
cept that included a wood decking area with bistro tables where people could socialize, drink coffee and eat from local businesses, and the lower artificial turf (lawn) area with casual seating and space for outdoor games. But over time, the artificial lawn and games had to be removed, and the bistro tables took a “bit of a beating,” according to Erica Mashig, the city’s manager of arboriculture, horticulture and parks and open space planning. There were also a lot
of users who decided that smoking and drinking was OK no matter how many problems they caused for other parklet users. That is just not cool. Due to the behaviour of these so-called adults, the city now has to spend an estimated $15,000 for the redesign. The new design for the parklet includes a reduced deck area and expanded greenspace, including more planted areas and the addition of shade trees. The tables and chairs will be re-
moved and replaced with fixed seating, the size of the parklet will be reduced, the concrete barriers will be replaced with tree planters, and seating will be “flipped” and oriented away from Tim Hortons. “That’s something that people mistake it for today – that it’s Tim Hortons’ patio, which it is not,” Mashig said. “It is a public space for everyone. A much greener, more colourful, brighter space.” In addition, the city will provide larger and more sig-
nage at the parklet, will improve light levels at night, and will limit hours in the parklet from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. A June 10 staff report said deconstruction of the existing parklet will commence in late spring or early summer and construction of the new parklet will follow. All these changes sound good, but it’s really up to the so-called grownups who use the parklet to follow the rules and treat this public space with the respect it deserves.
MY VIEW KEITH BALDREY
Game-changer looms for TMX While Prime Minister Justin Trudeau understandably took the lead in announcing his government was re-approving the Trans Mountain pipeline, some people who are key to getting the project over the finish line were not even in the room. I’m referring to the First Nations leaders who are trying to purchase a major equity stake in the pipeline. Several consortiums composed of dozens of First Nations acrossWestern Canada are gaining momentum in their attempts to either partner with the federal government in operating the pipeline, or even owning it outright. The Iron Coalition, based in Alberta, is competing with Project Reconciliation. These bids appear to be well along the path when it comes to securing financing and have to be taken seriously. Trudeau himself, in his remarks announcing the pipeline approval, said his government was seeking input from Indigenous groups about sharing in the benefits of the project. “And when it comes to potential Indigenous buyin, we’re not putting a limit on it,”Trudeau said. “Indigenous ownership in Trans Mountain Corporation could be 25 per cent, 50 percent or even 100 per cent.” If Indigenous ownership of the pipeline, even if it is only a minority equity stake, actually becomes a reality, it will be a proverbial gamechanger. Anti-pipeline activists
would find it more difficult to take on a consortium of First Nations who want to build a pipeline to help deliver economic salvation to these communities, many of which suffer from grinding poverty. A campaign against a First Nations-owned pipeline would essentially be fighting against their self-determination. Having First Nations as a business partner would provide a tremendous boost to the federal Liberals. Trudeau’s approval of the pipeline was deftly tied to a pledge to spend corporate tax revenues from the project to invest in clean energy projects. The annual $500 million revenues would be a huge investment in non-fossil fuel energy projects. The prime minister’s plan represents a compromise: accept the continued use of fossil fuels for a limited period, but use the money made on its export to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Trudeau’s messaging was clearly tied to the fall election. He is obviously betting most voters favour fighting climate change by using tools such as a carbon tax, and that those same voters have no interest in shutting down pipelines. Securing support from First Nations consortiums would help mute some of the disruptive protests against the pipeline’s construction. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global BC.

HST called a ‘betrayal’
The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce said it was planning a seminar on the province’s new 12-percent harmonized sales tax, but information about it was still too vague. The HST was to combine the federal goods and services tax with the provincial sales tax. New West MLA Dawn Black called the plan a “betrayal,” saying the BC Liberals had promised during the election not to bring in the tax. And some local businesses were preparing to host an anti-HST petition. Organizers needed signatures from 10 per cent of the registered voters in each of the province’s 85 ridings to force a vote in the legislature or a referendum on the tax.

Non-drivers in tough Editor: In all the discussion on moving the recycling depot from McBride to United Boulevard, everyone assumes that cars are used to get there. What about ones like me who (voluntarily) gave up car ownership and thus need to use the bus? Is there any bus service on United Boulevard where the depot will be? How long a walk will this entail? I am even less likely to take stuff there on my bicycle. What should one do with recycling that is not picked up at one’s apartment building? Such as glass and soft plastic, etc. Colin Dover, New Westminster
Not everyone in New West drives a vehicle
Editor: Re: Too much hyperbole in the recycling depot debate, Record, June 13 I found the tone of this editorial somewhat condescending. The “inconvenience” the writer dismisses is based on the assumption that everyone in New Westminster has access to a car to transport their recyclables, and it ignores a bigger, ethical picture: that of environmental responsibility, which the city began abdicating a few years ago when it decided to make glass recycling more difficult for residents of New Westminster. Studies show that when recycling is made easier there is a greater level of compliance. This is precisely why cities and towns across the world have opted for doorstep blue bin recycling and now composting programs in the first place. A few years ago, the city decided to remove
glass from the curbside recycling program, for perfectly valid safety reasons, but did not provide a genuine substitute. There are no separate bins for glass collection in curbside programs (unlike other jurisdictions). Grocery stores don’t mind selling us pickles in glass jars, but even they don’t provide in-store recycling bins for these jars. This means if you don’t live in the vicinity of the current recycling depot and you don’t own a car, you have to get on a bus with all your recyclables to travel to the depot. Now we’re being told that we have to travel to Coquitlam. Not everyone in New Westminster drives. For many people, our decision to move into the downtown/uptown neighbourhoods was based on their walkability and access to transit. I don’t own a car because, to get around my hometown, I don’t need one. But now, apparently, I do just so I can recycle responsibly. I predict that a lot of recyclables will end up in dumpsters and refuse bins because residents won’t bother to or won’t be able to make the drive. The mixed messaging in this is frankly astonishing. There are campaigns all around encouraging us to reduce plastic, but the City of New Westminster is deliberately making it more difficult to recycle glass. We are being encouraged to cut CO2 emissions, but now I’m expected to transport my glass to Coquitlam to recycle it. We live in a time of environmental peril, and the city is abdicating its responsibility. Council seriously needs to rethink this proposal. I certainly will be rethinking my vote come next election. I won’t vote for anyone who is not taking environmental responsibility seriously. Lindsey bat Joseph, New Westminster

Five ways parents can help their kids feel comfortable at the dentist 1. Be a positive role model. Children frequently learn by example. If they see their parents being diligent about dental care, they’re more likely to embrace proper oral hygiene. Bring children to your own dental appointments so they understand the process and become familiar with the type of equipment used. 2. Stick to the first-tooth milestone. Take your child to the dentist on or about when his or her first tooth erupts. Early dental visits will get kids used to going to the dentist and prevent minor problems that may lead to more complex dental issues.
5. Consider using your dentist. Some parents like to take their children to a pediatric dentist, but it may not always be necessary. Many family practices cater to patients of all ages, and the familiarity of the office may help make children feel more comfortable. Speak with your dentist about the ages they see.

3. Read books about the dentist and role play. Information can allay kids’ fears about the dentist. Read books together about dental visits and act out possible scenarios with your kids. Give kids toy dental health tools and have them practice exams on you and vice-versa. 4. Be supportive and instill trust. Avoid telling your child that everything will be okay. If a procedure is needed, this could affect his or her trust in you and make the dental office an even greater source of anxiety. Simply be supportive and offer a hand to squeeze or a hug if your child needs you.

City Teen swarmed in Pier Park: police Dustin Godfrey dgodfrey@newwestrecord.ca
The New Westminster Police Department believes there may be cellphone footage of a fight in which a group of teenagers ganged up on one other teenager last Friday morning. Investigators are still seeking evidence, including video and witnesses, of a fight that left one man in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police believe the fight began as a fight between two youths, before a group of teenagers ganged up on one of them. The NWPD received the call to the fight in Pier Park, in the 400 block of Front Street, at around 12:15 a.m. After an initial investigation, NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Jeff Scott said police believe several people recorded the fight on their phones. “Our detectives are actively investigating all leads, and it is important that anyone with video evidence or with information come for-

MAN INJURED IN FIGHT OUTSIDE NIGHT CLUB A 41-year-old man was sent to hospital with a nonlife-threatening “puncture wound” after a large
fight broke out at a Church Street nightclub, New Westminster police say. While driving downtown, a New West Police Department officer noticed a large group of people on Church Street, just around the corner from police headquarters. A man approached the officer to say he was assaulted with a weapon. Police determined that

Petition wants lab open Dustin Godfrey dgodfrey@newwestrecord.ca
A petition with at least 40 signatures was delivered to the district vice-principal overseeing New Westminster’s Pearson Adult Education Centre to protest the closure of a lab that allowed students to work at their own pace. The centre, an adulted school run by the New Westminster School District that sees about 1,130 course enrolments per year, is set to close its self-paced learning lab to “better meet the needs of our students,” a statement from the district said. According to the statement, the school is expecting to offer revamped courses next year but will not offer the self-paced course options, “which showed very low completion and success rates.” “I have confidence that, with our staff devoted to learning in the classrooms, students will be receiving the support they need to be successful,” said Stephen Innis, district vice-princi-
pal for adult education, in a statement. But Lilia McInally, a student at the centre who organized the petition, said the lab has been important to her own education. “This lab is the heart of our centre, and many students feel it is essential that it remain open. … This petition is extremely important, as it is one of the few or only centres to have this kind of setting for the adult students in which they have self-paced courses with wonderful teachers and staff,” reads a prepared speech McInally delivered along with the petition. “Our lab serves as an example to show other districts that this system really works and has reaped great results for adult students.” For McInally, she said it’s important to have the lab, which she can attend at any time during its open hours – from around 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. – to study. That includes resources she considers vital: computers, a small library and teachers on hand to offer assistance or oversee quizzes and tests.

‘Positive energy’ flowing across the Atlantic Young NewWestminster woman hospitalized in London after being hit by an alleged drunk driver Theresa McManus

A longtime NewWestminster resident struck by a drunk driver during a visit to London is feeling the love and support from afar. Emily Goss, 24, suffered a head injury after being struck by a drunk driver in south London about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 16. “The positive energy that is flowing across the ocean is just amazing,” said Carol Goss, Emily’s grandmother. “They can feel it.” As of the Record’s deadline, Emily was in a medically-induced coma but physicians at St. George’s Hospital were beginning to lighten up on her sedation. She suffered no broken bones or organ damage in the accident. Upon learning of the accident, Emily’s parents Warren and Shawna Goss, brother Hayden, boyfriend Jamie and grandmother Wendy Bosley immediately boarded a flight to London. Emily’s parents and boyfriend remain by her side, where they’re sharing messages from friends and family. “People are sending emails to her every day. They are reading to her every day and they are printing them up,” Carol said. “They are keeping a book so she knows how many people this has affected.” After graduating from NewWestminster Secondary School, Emily attended Douglas College and took courses at BCIT. A dedicat-
ed student, Emily is scheduled to attend a full-time business program at BCIT in September. Goss, who was born and raised in NewWest, is an avid traveller and lived in England when she had a two-year working visa. At the time of the accident, she was visiting friends she’d met while living in England and working at The London Eye. “All her friends gathered for a party to welcome her, to see her on this short trip. That is where she’d been,” Carol told the Record. “They had actually sang her Happy Birthday for the two birthdays that they’d missed since she came home. She was totally loved by everyone there.” Emily was on her way home from the gathering with two friends when she was struck by a vehicle. “The car came from behind. None of them heard it. They were on the sidewalk,” Carol said. “She was the only one who got hit.” Although the driver failed to stop at the scene, he was arrested a short time later on suspicion of impaired driving and was in police custody. Carol said the family is grateful for the support they’ve received on a number of fronts since the accident, noting Air Canada, the Canadian Embassy, St. George’s Hospital and the police have been incredibly helpful and helped them get to Emily’s bedside within 17 hours. In London, the family was whisked through se-

Community New West Grand Prix brings top cyclists to city Theresa McManus
tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
The New West Grand Prix is returning to the streets of New Westminster this summer. The New West Grand Prix is part of BC Superweek, a race series taking place July 5 to 14 in six cities across Metro Vancouver. The local event, featuring more than 200 international riders, hits the streets of downtown New Westminster on Tuesday, July 9. “The New West Grand Prix has proven itself to be one of New Westminster’s signature events. The calibre of this event is outstanding, and it is amazing to witness the abilities of elite athletes moving by their own power at up to 70 kilometres an hour,” said Mayor Jonathan Cote in a press release. “It has all the elements that make it a fun and exciting experience: speed, athleticism, and strategy coupled with activities for the whole family in a great festival atmosphere. And it’s all free! I encourage everyone to
come and cheer on the racers on July 9.” The New West Grand Prix is a criterium-style race featuring a gruelling 935-metre circuit with tight corners and long straightaways. It includes a tough climb up Eighth and Carnarvon streets and a highspeed descent down Sixth Street to Columbia Street. Riders will complete 45 to 50 laps before sprinting to the finish line.
This event is more than just a race to us Now in its third year, the New West Grand Prix’s course has earned the reputation of being the hardest event in the BC Superweek series. Before the pros take to the streets, young riders aged 12 and under can participate in the New West Kids Prix, where they’ll get a chance to race a special
course. According to a press release from the city, the success of the New West Grand Prix is due largely in part to a team of more than 130 community volunteers and the generous contributions of sponsors.Together, their support makes New Westminster a cycling destination for participants and spectators alike. “The team at Landcor strongly believes in being a part of the community in which we operate and we are proud to be a Champion sponsor of the New West Grand Prix,” Jeff Tisdale, chief executive officer at Landcor Data Corporation, said in a press release. “This event is more than just a race to us; we are a part of the excitement that local community members and businesses bring, attracting people from all over.We welcome all competitors and visitors to our beautiful and historic city.” The 2019 New West Grand Prix is supported by the following sponsors: Landcor Data Corpo-

augural year. For more information on the New West Grand Prix and how to get involved, including volunteering and providing host housing to riders, sponsorship opportunities and the New West Kids Prix, go to www.new westgrandprix.com.

participate in the 24th Annual Pot of Gold Charity Golf Tournament on July 16th at Mayfair Lakes Golf Club. Over the past 23 years, this event has raised almost $530,000 for local charities. Over $38,000 was raised from last year’s tournament alone. The Rotary Clubs’ principal focus has been on funding programs for youth in New Westminster, and we will continue to promote them. Again this year, the two local Rotary Clubs will also donate a portion of the net proceeds to Salvation Army (New Westminster) and the Lower Mainland Purpose Society (an alternate education facility) to further their valuable work with youth facing their own challenges in the community. We believe we need to invest in our youth, since they are our future. Past tournaments have been sold out. We hope to repeat that success this year.
We invite you to participate in the tournament as a sponsor, donor or golfer...or, ideally, all three and join us in a day of golf and camaraderie and support our work in your community at the same time. See our website at www.rotarypotofgoldgolf.com for more information and forms. Help us help youth in our community! If you have any questions, please contact Rick Molstad at 604.831.1821 or molstad.rick@gmail.com and we would be pleased to answer your enquiries. Hoping to see you on July 16th. Jenine Grass, Ann Negrin and Sarah Negrin, who work together at NWSS, were among six B.C. educators who were recently named as recipients of the 2019 National Inclusive Education Awards, which honour teachers, support staff and educational leaders who are doing amazing things to ensure that all students, especially those with special needs, are given full access to education and included in all aspects of school life. They received their awards at Inclusion B.C.’s annual conference. According to Inclusion BC, the trio’s advocacy for inclusion, and their compassion and dedication, are transforming the lives of the students at the school. New West parent Laurie Scouten is very thankful for “extra hearts and voices” that make such a difference in her daughter’s education. “It started with trust, a connection, a professionalism and a dedication,” she said in a press release. The National Inclusive Education Awards are presented annually in partnership with Inclusive Education Canada to recognize individuals or groups nominated by their communities who initiate or support unique opportunities that enrich inclusive educational experiences. The local education assistants were recipients in the Inclusive Support category.

Home support is failing B.C. seniors: advocate
British Columbia’s home support program is unaffordable for most seniors and offers too few services for high-need clients, says B.C. Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie. Home Support …We Can Do Better, a comprehensive report release June 19, examines the province’s heathcare program and makes recommendations for improvement. “Seniors in our province tell me they want to age in their homes for as long as possible but the system, which should enable that, is falling short,” Mackenzie said in a news release. “When more than 60 per cent of seniors are entering long-term care having received no home support in the months leading up to their placement and 62 per cent of their family members are in distress, it is time to ask how effective the program is at assisting B.C. seniors to live at home.”
Home support, which includes things like dressing, bathing, meal preparation and other tasks, is intended to allow seniors to live independently longer, delaying or preventing admission to a long-term care facility. The program also supports timely discharge from hospital.
It is time to ask how effective the program is ...
According to a press release from the Office of the Seniors Advocate, key findings of the review include: ! Public home support is unaffordable for most seniors. A senior with an income of $27,000 is expected to pay $8,800 a year for a once-daily home support visit. ! 61 per cent of residents

Community No, working from home doesn’t make summer ‘easy’ Mommy’s GROUNDED Bianca Bujan
Sitting hunched over my laptop at six in the morning, I hear the floor creak in the kitchen, and I know that my son is up. I rush to finish typing an email and then hurriedly hit send before I close my computer and step away from my work to give him a hug. As I prepare breakfast, my two girls enter the room as well, and my youngest asks enthusiastically, “What are we going to do today mama?” In my mind, I’m running through a checklist of to-do items that need to be done for work before the day comes to a close, but my work will have to wait until later because it’s summer break and my kids need me. The rest of my day is spent teeter-tottering between keeping my kids busy and take caring of business tasks. When my kids go to bed, I return to my laptop and work until midnight. When I was working in a full-time corporate job, one of the main reasons why I quit and decided to work for myself was the catastrophic cost of child care. To be able to work at my nine-to-five job, I had to pay close to $2,500 a month for child care for my two young children – and that didn’t include the added costs of babysitters if I had to work overtime hours or attend
evening events with my spouse. When I decided to work from home, my firstborn had just entered kindergarten. While I had thought that would reduce the rates, the price I paid for before and after school care was only slightly less. The financial burden paired with the demands of a job that required long hours, made working for myself a mustdo decision. Remote work definitely has its perks. While I still rely on part-time care for my third child, I’m saving significantly on child-care costs. I work flexible hours and work for myself. But with the pros come cons as well. As a freelancer, I don’t always have the security of a steady income or the health benefits often provided by a corporate employer, or an allotment of vacation time (because when I’m not working, I’m not getting paid). And when the summer months approach, so do the challenges of trying to balance a full-time workload with a house full of kids. When people hear that I work remotely, they often assume that I have it easy. I hear regularly, comments like, “you’re so lucky you get to work from home,” and people jealously jest that I get to be “there” for my kids during the nine-week break, spending more time with them and saving on the substantial summer camp costs.
But juggling my job with a house full of my boisterous brood (and often a slew of their buddies) is no easy feat. I still rely on summer camps – which at $400-plus per child, per week, can add up quite quickly. And there are no steady work hours when you’re trying to combine work and family at the same time – the lines are constantly blurred. As a professional, being present for my children during the summer months poses challenges, even though I may be physically there. Just like parents who work out of the home, the summer guilt still sets in, and the struggle to find support is equally as strenuous. Having your children in the same room while you work means that they are often left to their own devices, and ignored when they want your attention. The truth is, when it comes to summer break, we as working parents are spending most of the season just trying to survive – regardless of where we work. Whether you’re working from an out-of-home office, or working remotely from your dining room table, when it comes to the summer months for working parents, the struggle is real for us all. Home support in ‘desperate need’ Continued from page 25 workers of any health-care classification. ! Home support hasn’t kept pace with the growing number of seniors. Over the last five years, the number of seniors has grown by 22 per cent but the number of home support clients has increased by 15 per cent. ! The rate of home support clients for the population 85 years and older has decreased 4.3 per cent in the last five years. ! The rate of home-support hours for the population 85 and older has decreased 10.3 per cent in the last five years. ! Complaints to the Patient Care Quality Office have increased 62 per cent in the last five years. Mackenzie applauds the
province for the progress it’s made on many fronts in the support of seniors, including increasing the care hours in long-term care, adding adult daycare spaces, and creating more facilitybased respite. “However, home support is also in desperate need and we must find the resources to ensure that seniors who need just a little
bit of help at home aren’t being pushed prematurely into long-term care because it is the only affordable option available to them and that overwhelmed family caregivers aren’t faced with the heartbreaking decision to place their loved one in a care home because they could not get just a couple of hours of home support a day,” Mackenzie said.

ASK A REALTOR
Q
Will an exodus of the 200,000 Canadian passport holders from Hong Kong have an effect on real estate values in New West?
A
Watch the fireworks happen in the real estate market if DERRICK THORNHILL the expected exodus from Park Georgia Realty Hong Kong comes to fruition. Even the threat of an extradition bill may cause Canadian citizens in Hong Kong to bug out. These are not middle-class citizens. These are affluent citizens by our standards. Even if 10% of that number move to Vancouver over the next five years that would increase the buying pool by 4,000 people per year. Not even the current provincial government and their home equity erosion politics could stop that train! Buckle up folks, next spring could be very interesting in the New Westminster real estate market.

An excellent option is to visit veterinarians and pet professionals who have done specific training and certification to be Fear Free Certified. Certified veterinary team members want to reduce the fear, anxiety and stress that your pet experiences during a veterinary visit. Both your pet’s physical and emotional well-being will be cared for! In a Fear Free veterinary hospital, the receptionist will help you first prepare your pet for travel to his or her appointment. Specific techniques as well as pet calming pheromone sprays may be recommended. Pre-visit anti-anxiety medication may be dispensed prior to your pet’s visit. You will be invited to make social visits to your veterinary hospital with your dog so your dog has the opportunity to socialize with the veterinary team, to enjoy the toys and play area and to visit the very delicious ‘treat bar’. By making frequent fun social visits, on appointment day, your dog is much more likely to be relaxed and happy. Pet calming pheromones are infused throughout the hospital using diffusers. Pet calming music will be softly playing in the hospital. Your pet will feel like he or she is visiting the ‘spaw’!
ASK A PERSONAL TRAINER
Q
I know it’s important to stay active, but I don’t like to exercise. What should I do?
A
First of all, you are not alone: there are lots of people who don’t like to exercise. The IRINA ALMASAN problem is, when we think OWNER/PERSONAL TRAINER about exercise, we often think it means going to the gym – which isn’t terribly fun. Remember, ALL movement counts as physical activity – the environment in which they take place is irrelevant. Here are some ways in which you can incorporate movement into your life: gardening, walking (New West hills anyone?), house chores (think about all the reaching and bending over you have to do!), swimming, biking, playing team sports, hiking, joining classes. Explore and see what works for you: there is noone-size-fits-all when it comes to movement, and it certainly doesn’t have to mean going to the gym! www.toneeveryzone.ca irina@toneeveryzone.ca

How Do I plan for the care of my aging parents?
In low-stress veterinary hospitals, non-slip yoga mats are used on examination room tables or on the floor. If cats are unwilling to come out of their carriers on their own, a team member will offer to remove the top of the carrier so your cat can remain in the carrier bottom to be examined where he or she feels safe and secure.
Start with the following few tips: 1. Talk to your parents or family members before a crisis situation. With this conversation you will better WENDY J SCOTT understand the true wishes of your RN, BScN, MA aging family members. Discuss health insurance, Independent/Assisted Living, Long-term or in-home care options, and important legal documents. 2. Locate any community resources that may be available to you and your family. Senior Support Services,Meals on Wheels, and Adult Day Care Facilities. You can access many of these services via the local hospital or skilled nursing facility discharge planners, or senior’s citizen centres. 3. Ask friends and family for help. Ask them what experiences they have had with some of the community services. Many of these people may have already gone through this and can be of assistance.

My dog is scared when I take her to the vet. What can I do?
You can take your dog to a veterinary clinic that provides DR. MANJU ARORA a low stress environment for pets. Check to make sure your veterinarian and veterinary team members are Fear FreeSM Certified Professionals. Hospitals that are Fear FreeSM will invite you to make social visits there with your dog for treats so visiting there becomes a positive experience. Some veterinary clinics use Adaptil diffusers which are calming pheromones for dogs, and they play special doggy calming music. Ask your veterinary team if they host doggy social parties so your pet can get used to being in a hospital environment without being afraid. Our chef and sous chef cook your meal to order, providing you with authentic Greek flavors. Top it off with one of our house made desserts and a coffee. We’d like to hope you’ll enjoy our company during your meal as much as we’ll enjoy yours.
Yes! The potato crusted cod. A light fish battered in a flaky potato crust. This pairs perfectly with our cold imported European beer, Czechvar! What are the house specialties? How did you go about selecting these specialty dishes? One of our house specialities is the roast lamb. It has been marinated and slow roasted for hours. The lamb falls off the bone, so you won’t be needing much more than a fork and your appetite.
What’s your underlying philosophy in operating your restaurant? Keep the flavors authentic, the service polite and the customers happy.
As one of our most popular dishes it was a no brainer to make our secret recipe a house special.
What lesson did you learn early on that you continue to use today?
What makes your regular customers keep coming back?
Our customers are family.
Our regular customers are loyal patrons, whom we respect immensely. We’d like to think they come back for our delicious food and service.

Arts & Entertainment Exhibit walks through the streets of New West Julie MacLellan LIVELY CITY
jmaclellan@newwestrecord.ca
Explore the buildings of New Westminster at The Gallery at Queen’s Park in July. The gallery is presenting New West By the Numbers, featuring the work of painter Robert Ascroft, from July 1 to 28. An opening reception is set for Wednesday, July 3 from 6 to 8 p.m., and an Inter/action talk with the artist is scheduled for Sunday, July 14 from 3 to 4 p.m. A press release about the show notes Ascroft’s work examines the face of New Westminster as, during urban revitalization, some of its unique buildings are being or have been demolished. His watercolours document some of the unique buildings of the city, chosen based on their symmetry and their windows. “Shakespeare said that ‘eyes are the window to your soul,’” says the release. “Ascroft views a building’s windows as the ‘eyes’ to its soul, and seeks structures where windows may both show what is inside and possibly reflect the outside surrounds.” Want to see the city through Ascroft’s eyes? The gallery, at Centennial Lodge (just across the roadway from the bandshell), is open Wednesdays from 1 to 8 p.m., and Thursdays through Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. Check out www.acnw.ca or follow @ ArtsCouncilNW on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. JAZZ IT UP Love jazz? Here’s a new option for a night out in New Westminster. Piva Modern Italian, the popular restaurant at the Anvil Centre (777 Columbia St.), is offering up Wednesday night dinner jazz for eight weeks starting June 26. From 7 to 9:30 p.m. each Wednesday, diners will be treated to the sounds of the Will Clements Trio and other jazz musicians, against the backdrop of their contemporary Italian cuisine – and, of course, wine. Reservations are recommended, so if you want to check it out, you may want to get on the list for a Wednesday coming up soon: https://pivarestaurant.

A press release from the arts council notes that Peters has been taking the bus from White Rock in to Douglas College, but, thanks to this award, she’ll be moving to New West in the fall. Peters will be onstage with her fellow students in the fall of 2019 and winter of 2020 at Douglas College’s Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre. Good run for ’Bellies creates quandry for GM Dan Olson
dolson@newwestrecord.ca
Some strong on-floor signs point to tough choices for New Westminster Salmonbellies general manager Dan Richardson entering the long weekend. With his Western Lacrosse Association team appearing to be on the right path, following Sunday’s thrilling come-frombehind 10-9 triumph over the Maple Ridge Burrards, Richardson faces the task of not upsetting good team chemistry with a risky move by Sunday’s league trade deadline. As evident by Maple Ridge’s three-game losing skid since they pulling off a major trade, any big move could alter what is now a good thing. But when you have an eye on being a Mann Cup contender, standing pat is usually not an option. “You can compare it to any sport. It’s all relative – I was at the NHL draft and you look at all the teams that go all-in at the deadline and make those rental trades, how many were successful with those?,” noted Richardson following Sunday’s win. “You have to balance that. What about the chemistry in your room, when you bring in guys how do they fit?” Noting how the Burrards’ current slide coincides with a deal that brought in No. 1 goalie Christian Del Bianco, sniper Wes Berg and defender Alex Bohl, while subtracting longtime Maple Ridge players Chase McIntyre and Ryan Johnson, Richardson said there are risks involved – adding he expects his Fraser Valley rival will put it together soon. “We’re very careful about that – of course you want the best players, but you have to also be careful of what type of player you bring in,” he said. “What does he do off the floor? What values does the person have? If it’s not matching up with what you have, stay clear. So you have to do your homework.” The players themselves will provide the best info, whether their paths crossed through minor, in the WLA or pro. Still, the added luxury of being able to ‘rent a player’ – a new rule this off-season that allows teams to do trade-and-return of players, as is practiced in Ontario – creates new opportunities. “That’s the balancing act. Some teams may give up too much. We’re trying to work a deal but we’re trying to not sacrifice too much of our future.” On the floor, the ‘Bellies got four goals from Austin Shanks in rallying from a 6-3 deficit to beat the Burrards in Maple Ridge. His final tally came with 1:03 left in the third, on a quick
THE POWER OF TWO: It’s a tough equation when two surround one in the Western Lacrosse Association; above, New West’s Mike Donaldson, left, and Mike Messenger put the squeeze on Nanaimo’s Chase Fraser; at right, the T-men’s Colton Clark and Fraser jostle the’Bellies’ Ian Hawksbee off the ball, during last week’s game at Queen’s Park Arena. PHOTOS JENNIFER GAUTHIER shot that caught Del Bianco off guard. “I had a hot stick (all game) and felt confident, so I saw my shot and I took it,” recalled Shanks. “It was an early shot so I was hoping (Del Bianco) wasn’t really ready. I think I did catch him off guard, put it in a good spot and it went in.” It capped a game where New West fell behind 4-1, pulled even midway through the middle period only to see the hosts fire in a pair to lead 8-6 with 20 minutes remaining. Goals by Jeff Henrick, Shanks and Mitch Jones turned the tables, but a powerplay tally from Ridge’s Riley Loewen tied the score with 3:21 left. Shanks came up with the solution. “Shanks has a great shot,” said coach Rory McDade. “He can score from pretty much anywhere, with the type of shot I haven’t seen too much of. It’s tough for goalies.” Picking up a goal and four assists was Keegan Bal, while Jones finished with two goals and three helpers. Making the win possible was goalie Alexis Buque, who kicked out 41 shots and was later named the WLA’s Goalkeeper of the Week. Jones,
meanwhile, was chosen the offensive player of the week. “Both goalies played outstanding – got to give credit to Buque to hold them to eight. That’s a great team but he got some big saves on the crease and from the outside. Big ups for Buque and our defence. IF we can get stops and we move the ball on O, we’re deadly,” said Shanks. New West, sitting third at 5-3, visits first-place Burnaby on Friday (7:30 p.m.), then hosts Victoria Saturday for a rare 5 p.m. start at Queen’s Park Arena.
Locals get elite meet time at Jerome Mason repeats as Jerome Classic high jump champion New Westminster-born Mike Mason successfully defended his title, topping the Harry Jerome Track Classic’s men’s high jump last Thursday at Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium. Mason, a member of the Canadian national team, equalled last year’s jump of 2.21 metres, ahead of teammate Django Lovett’s 2.16 jump. On the track, New West native
and UBC runner Bogdan Pavel finished fifth in the men’s open 110m hurdles. Pavel’s finish time of 15.46 seconds trailed American Max Hairston, who came first with a time of 13.97. Posting the eighth-best time in the men’s open 200m dash, New West Secondary alumnus Ben Tjernagel finished in 22.71 seconds, behind national team member Jerome Blake, who won the event with a
time of 20.89. Also in competition were Royal City track club members Jarret Chong, who finished fourth in the men’s javelin with a throw of 59.28m, and J.V. Patry-Smith, who placed seventh in the women’s open javelin. New West Spartans’ Caleigh O’Flaherty, meanwhile, posted a seventh-best time in the women’s open 100m hurdles.

He is survived by his loving parents Lorne and Sybil, sister Arlene, niece Rachel, the family fur baby Montana, and his extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. John was born and raised in New Westminster and was involved in soccer and lacrosse throughout his childhood/high school years. His love of cooking landed him on the Island of Corfu, in the small village of Roda, Greece, where he worked at Roda Oasis Hotel from April - October, for many, many years. He spoke Greek fluently and made many lifelong friendships. Next to cooking, his biggest love was his niece (his monkey-mou) and his parents dog Montana (his personal side-kick … never left his side if she could help it). His loyalty and protectiveness towards family was infamous, his stories of his journey always full of laughter. A Book Of Memories can be found on www.BurquitlamFuneralHome.ca, where condolences and/or memories can be posted. A Memorial Service, and then a Celebration of Life will be held at Holy Trinity Cathedral, 514 Carnarvon Street, New Westminster on Saturday July 6th at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Michael’s Hospice, or to a charity of your choice, in John’s name.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
GRANT, Tillie M. October 1918 - June 2019 Died in her 101’st year in New Westminster, BC. Having her formal education interrupted early she was proud to say she never stopped learning. Through diligence in retail and clerical work, study and training, Tillie eventually became a partner/owner of a successful Credit Bureau. After selling the business, Tillie and husband Fred moved to BC, where she worked for the Vancouver bureau until her retirement. Tillie loved her church. A lifelong Presbyterian, and Elder of Knox Church in Sapperton, she was always on hand to greet and take part in all that went on there. Born in Brandon, Manitoba, Tillie was the middle child of nine born to Anton and Pauline Bygarski. Predeceased by her husband, Fred Grant, daughter Carroll Johnson and seven of her siblings, Tillie is survived by her son, Charles Hughes (Nancy) of Coquitlam, sister Ann Sherban (Ed), sister-in-law Jessie Roberts both of Brandon, six grandchildren, nine greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service and reception will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, 403 East Columbia Street, New Westminster (Sapperton) on Saturday, July 6th at 2:00 pm.

YOUR TOTAL HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS Total Vitality Centre (previously Pure5 Wellness Hub) has accelerated it’s evolution in the healthcare field for the 21st century. As an integrative and holistic wellness centre, we are complimentary to the current allopathic medical system. A focus on healing rather than curing is needed to transform one’s body. Traditional medicine dealing with only the physical body when symptoms start to occur provides only a band-aid solution, as often times the symptoms keeps coming back.
• Registered Massage Therapy, RMT • Live Blood Analysis & Vitality Analysis • Acupuncture (Cupping and Moxibustion) • PEMF Therapy • Naturopathic Medicine and Physician • Salt Therapy (Halotherapy) (booster shots, wellness shots, & various lab tests) • Full Spectrum Infrared Sauna • Quantum Health Coaching
• Organic & Vegan Body Services
• Bowen Therapy
(mani/pedis, facials, natural waxing,
• Microneedling Facials
eyelash extensions, & more)
Total Vitality Centre focuses on the mind, body, and spirit by utilizing vital body medicine and mind-body medicine, all while focusing on the physical symptoms. When it comes to our bodies, the 5 bodies of consciousness are the subtle energy of our being. A better way to explain is when we are sensing something, it’s actually our physical being that is speaking to us. When we feel something, then we are tapping into the vital body. Acupuncture, homeopathy, and therapeutic touch are some examples of vital body medicine. When we are thinking about something, then we are tapping into the mind. Hypnotherapy, mind-based wellness, and coaching are modalities of mind-body medicine. When we are intuiting, then we are tapping into the supra-mental realm. If we don’t address the issues that lie deep in the vital and mental realms, then the physical symptoms will always keep coming back. Total Vitality Centre is here to transform your life so you can live life to its fullest with happiness, abundance, and joy. Owners Keith and Helen Tong

BBQ Safety Tips We all want what’s best for our family and the Burnaby Fire Department shares your concerns. Here are some hints to avoid unnecessary hazards. • Proper use – Ensure you read the manufacturer’s instructions and learn how to use your grill properly • Gas – Inspect propane bottles for damage / age and replace when expired • Grills – Inspect hoses and grill for wear/leaks and ensure connections are tight • Multi-living – Always check with your building management / and / or strata to ensure BBQ grills are permitted • Make room – If using on a patio/deck, always leave sufficient space for your grill away from siding, garages, and overhang • Maintenance – Keep your BBQ clean and free of built up grease or food particles • Safety – Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of a BBQ fire • Prevention – Never leave a BBQ unattended and keep children and pets safely away • Charcoal – Use only properly labelled starter fluid designed for BBQ grills
Matches and Lighters are Tools not Toys! The Burnaby Fire Department wishes everyone a safe and happy Canada Day
