Y ianni’s Greek Taverna

543 - 6th Street, New Westminster

In ancient Greek mythology, Mediterranean cuisine was the ambrosia for the gods. It still is. Thankfully, you don’t have to fly to Greece to enjoy a succulent dinner, just head to the heart of Uptown New Westminster to Yianni’s Greek Taverna. A local favourite, the multiple award-winning restaurant has been part of the city’s go-to eateries for more than 16 years. The best thing about the Cretan food is its simplicity. No overpowering spices or cooking processes mar the flavour of the fresh. The key to its success, says its manager Pawan, is quality ingredients, consistency and a welcoming atmosphere. “We are a family owned and operated restaurant,” says Pawan. “The Yianni’s family is committed to providing you with an experience you will enjoy and love because we aren’t satisfied unless you are.” Eight years ago Paul Thandi took over the popular Greek restaurant in New Westminster. The restaurant, which seats about 65 patrons inside and 16 comfortably outside on the patio, will conjure up images of a trendy little cafe in Crete. Using the colours of the region, the walls are painted in yellow honey, various shades of brown and the bottom half of the walls in a warm avocado reminiscent of a truly Mediterranean taverna. However, it’s the cuisine that will bring you back. Dinner entrees include classics such as moussaka — baked eggplant and potato in meat sauce and topped with béchamel — roast lamb shoulder, souzoukia — spiced meatballs in tomatoes sauce. Also on the menu is a traditional favourite: chicken, lamb and beef souvlaki dinners served with Greek salad, rice, potatoes and tzatziki. For vegetarians, the eatery offers such palate-pleasing dishes as: vegetable lasagna, dolmathes, spanakopita and tiropita plate (cheese wrapped in filo served with Greek salad, potatoes and rice). The bar is fully licensed so you can sip on a Greek beer, a glass of wine or any number of other specialty drinks, while enjoying traditional Greek cuisine in an ambience of fun and excellent service. Yianni’s GreekTaverna is located at 543 Sixth Street. Visit the website for more information or to make a reservation at www.yiannisnewwest.com or call 604-523-0670.
