READERS’ CHOICE N E W W E S T M I N S T E R
Welcome to the 24th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards, it is one of our highlights each and every year at The Record. As you may recall, we published ballots during the Spring and asked you, our loyal reader, to cast your votes for the best in New West in over 100 business categories. While our contest does not qualify as a scientific survey, the level of participation definitely lends credibility to the outcome, as do our strict rules on how we count and qualify every ballot. Each ballot must contain a minimum of 15 businesses voted upon, only one ballot is accepted per individual, and only original ballots cut out of the newspaper or entered online were counted. All other entries were disqualified. I want to offer my sincere congratulations to the businesses who received this year’s Readers’ Choice Award. They are all deserving of our recognition as The Best in New West. But, please don’t take our word for it; visit the winning businesses listed in this special feature and decide for yourself! We also sincerely thank all of you who participated and entered this year’s contest.

Peter Julian tops the polls for Record readers
Whether he’s in New Westminster or in Ottawa, New Westminster-Burnaby MP Peter Julian is always hard at work trying to improve the lives of citizens. Julian breezed to a seventh term as New Westminster’s member of Parliament in last September’s federal election. Last year alone, he championed a wide variety of issues, such as supporting a Green New Deal for Canada, urging the federal government to introduce a public universal Pharmacare program, introducing legislation that takes aim at hate symbols and hate crimes, starting a petition against the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and calling for a halt to that project and advocating for a national dental care program. Julian is a friend to many local organizations and community groups, supporting a wide range of fundraisers and events. When seniors needed

These are but a few of the examples of instances where the longtime New West resident has lent his political expertise and personal time to help build a better community here at home – and across the country. In March, the Liberal Party of Canada and the New Democratic Party in Parliament signed a “supply and confidence agreement” that commits them to working together on key policy areas, including health, affordability and climate change. Through the agreement, the federal NDP will support the Liberal government on confidence votes and budgetary matters – in exchange for initia-

Anvil Centre is a hub for making connections Anvil Centre has become one of the go-to places for making connections in New Westminster. With a mix of cultural, conference and community spaces, the city-owned facility has become a hub of activity since opening its doors in September 2014. Built at a cost of more than $40 million, Anvil Centre has hosted a wide variety of events from conferences to film productions to blood donor clinic and COVID-19 vaccination clinics – at a time when gathering restrictions prevented conferences and other large gatherings from taking place. The main floor of the building at 777 Columbia St. is home to the Tourism New Westminster visitor information centre and boutique conference space – an area that’s been used for gatherings and celebrations of all types and sizes. The main floor has also played host to many special events, from Family
Day activities for folks of all ages to Winter Celebrations marking the coming of the holiday season. Upstairs, visitors will find the state-of-the-art Anvil Centre Theatre, a community art space, the New Westminster Museum and Archives and the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. That’s also where they’ll find the New Media Gallery, which features contemporary exhibitions from artists from around the word. The fourth floor features a variety of studios and practice rooms, many of which are used for arts and cultural and other community programs. Whether folks are attending a civic function, an arts or cultural event, holiday celebrations or a conference, Anvil Centre is a place that brings community members and visitors together.
CITY HUB: With its striking architecture and abundance of bright, airy spaces, the Anvil Centre has become a popular place for gatherings, meetings and conferences of all kinds. It won Record readers’ votes for Best Networking. PHOTO RECORD FILES

Hyack Festival holds a place in New West hearts The Hyack Festival Association has been hosting a wide variety of events to celebrate and show community spirit since 1971 – and this year is no different. Floats, marching bands, community groups, mascots, performance artists and more will fill the streets of New Westminster for the 2022 Hyack International Parade on Saturday, May 28.
“We are just so excited to be back doing what we love to do, and that’s bringing the community together,” says Sheila Sharma, executive director of the New Westminster Hyack Festival Association. “At a time when we really, really need it, we are happy to provide a platform for that.” COVID-19 restrictions may have prevented the association from holding

its big parade, but it still found pandemic-friendly ways to bring the community together by hosting drive-thru and porch parades. With restrictions having eased, the association is ready to welcome in-town and out-of-town visitors (including the Wenatchee Apple Blossom Festival in Washington State, the Royal Rosarians from Portland and the City of Kelowna) to join in on this year’s parade fun. The Hyack Festival Association didn’t get a chance to commemorate the parade’s 50th anniversary in 2021, so it’s celebrating that milestone at this year’s event. The Hyack International Parade will begin on Eighth Avenue, between Eighth and Sixth streets, proceed down Sixth Street and head into the homestretch on Queens Avenue, ending at Queen’s Park. But wait – the fun
BEST ANNUAL FESTIVAL: The Hyack Festival Association adapted to the pandemic with a special Parading in Place event . This year, the festival will return to its traditional celebrations, including the Hyack International Parade on May 28. PHOTO JENNIFER GAUTHIER/FILES doesn’t stop there. The Hyack Street Fest will be held in Tipperary Park (next to city call) on parade day. In past years it was held uptown, but it’s making a move to a roomier site near the end of the
parade route. “It’s going to be fantastic. It’s going to be a whole day of events – food trucks, market vendors, entertainment. We are going to have some kids’ games,” Sharma says.
“It’s going to be a great day.” Details about the Hyack International Parade and the Hyack Street Fest can be found online at www. hyackfestival.com.

New West Craft is a homegrown success story When it comes to all things handmade, it doesn’t get any better than New West Craft. New Westminster Record readers have once again voted New West Craft as the winner in the Arts/Crafts/Hobbies category. If you haven’t encountered it yet, New West Craft is a weekend market hosted by the Arts Council of New Westminster that aims to provide a welcoming place for crafters, artisans and makers to share their work with the community – and for community members to support their local makers. Markets take place regularly on the first and third Saturdays of the month, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at River Market (810 Quayside Dr.). From June to September, the market will move outdoors to the boardwalk at New West Quay, where more than 30 artisans will stretch out along the riverfront. Artisans who want to take part are being invited to apply now. A return of the summer night market is also being planned for Saturday, July 2. Check out all the details at acnw.ca/ newwestcraft. You can also keep an eye out for all the latest market news on Facebook, at www.facebook.com/newwestcraft.

Cultural Crawl earns nod as best arts festival It’s been going strong for 19 years – and it’s no surprise that the New West Cultural Crawl remains a favourite for New Westminster residents. Record readers have voted the New West Cultural Crawl as the city’s best Art Festival. And it’s easy to see why, given that it’s fun, it’s family-friendly, and it’s free. The annual arts and culture festival celebrates the diverse array of artistic talent right here in New West. For one weekend every year, visitors get to explore artist studios, galleries and venues on self-guided, self-paced tours – getting a behind-the-scenes look at the way artists work and chatting to some of the most interesting folks in the city while they’re at it. It started back in 2003 as a one-day “art walk” with eight venues, a handful of artists and less than 400 visitors. Over the years it’s grown to include more than 150 artists, 32 venues and more than 4,000 visitors. Visitors can take a copy of a map and travel through all the neighbourhoods of the city, stopping in at a variety of studios and galleries along the way. The 19th annual New West Cultural Crawl is set to return on Oct. 15 and 16, 2022. ART UP CLOSE: Artist Clarissa Banos greets visitors at the 2021 New West Cultural Crawl at the Anvil Centre.
