PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome!
rst, I want to say a heartfelt thank you our cherished community for showing up our events in numbers that constantly exceed our expectations It’s always a welcome reminder of why we do what we do
As President 2023 I am greatly honoured for the opportunity to represent the Hyack Festival Association and hope you will join us as we celebrate our 52nd year! Although I had the privilege to serve in this position in 2020, we weren’t able to produce in-person events, but rather did the best we could as we all remained apart The community rallied around our “Porch Parade” project and we were delighted at one of the best years of participation we’d ever experienced To be granted this second opportunity to give you the year we had originally envisioned is a privilege for which I’m grateful
Each year the President of the HFA chooses a theme around which our season is focused This year I have chosen the theme “Jewel of our City” For me, this reflects our organization’s commitment to the community and its people We strive to be a jewel that shines a light on this amazing city that we live, play, and work in, recognizing our time-honoured traditions and preserving our history, while simultaneously progressing the future
We are fast approaching our highly anticipated Hyack International Parade & Festival in the Park
The Parade begins at 11am as the procession of participants make their way down 6th Street, after which the thousands of spectators typically follow the last entry right into Tipperary Park to the Hyack Festival lled with food trucks, market vendors and exhibitors, a kid-zone with inflatable carnival games, face painting, wooden boat-building and crafts, an entertainment stage with community
performers and live music, our Hyack Festival is the perfect way to spend a charming day in New Westminster
For over 50 years, the HFA has been producing large-scale community events, bringing citizens of all ages from every walk of life together, finding a common bond in the celebration of our community The diversity of our participants is a heart-warming blend of the many groups that make up our city and embraces the values that make New Westminster a leader in inclusion and representation It is our privilege to continue to create fun-filled events, boosting our treasured community spirit by coming together over shared experiences of joy. This year, I am also making it my endeavour to spread our New Westminster spirit throughout the Lower Mainland We will be taking our float and our Youth Ambassador Leadership team to as many local parades as we can manage, including Poco’s May Day Parade, the Cloverdale Rodeo Parade, Pitt Meadows Day Parade, Steveston Salmon Festival, and more
After our Parade & Festival, we will be hard at work organizing our Farewell to Summer Fireworks Festival at the Westminster Quay on Saturday, August 26th for a spectacular day filled with artisan market vendors, live entertainment, fantastic food, and the piece de resistance: a Fireworks extraordinaire to captivate thousands of enchanted onlookers
The support of our community is the single most important factor by which we guide our organization We are always welcoming more members and volunteers into our ranks, so please reach out if you are looking to join a group of dedicated people who love to serve their community Your participation means a great deal to us as we surge forward with our efforts
Many warm thanks from all of us, to all of you Penny McIvor
