‘I KNOW THE ISSUES THAT MATTER TO NEW WESTMINSTER’ – DARCY

Liberals take B.C. – NDP takes New West BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

New Westminster stuck with tradition and elected an NDP MLA to the legislature in Victoria. While polls were still being counted at The Record press time, Judy Darcy had been declared the winner in New Westminster in Tuesday’s provincial election. New Westminster has elected the NDP or its predecessor, the Co-operative Commonwealth, in every provincial election since 1953, with the exception of a Liberal win in 2001. “I am very, very excited,” she said. “I had an amazing team of volunteers who worked their butts off for weeks and weeks and weeks. It’s about people power.” With 102 of 103 polls counted, Darcy had 10,270 votes, compared to Liberal candidate Hector Bremner’s 7,208. Trailing behind were Green party candidate Terry Teather at 1,745, Conservative candidate Paul Forseth at 1,011, independent candidate James Crosty at 851 and Libertarian candidate Lewis Dahlby at 153. Darcy entered her Heritage Grill election party and led the crowd in a chant of NDP. At the time, she had been declared the winner in New Westminster but her party was trailing the B.C. Liberals provincially. “I knew it would take an enormous people-driven campaign to win and it did,” she said. “I have never, ever taken this for granted.” Whether she’s in government or opposition, Darcy is pledging to represent New Westminster in Victoria. “I know the issues that matter to New Westminster, the issues I have heard on the doorstops, the issues I have heard in coffee shops, in people’s living rooms,” she said. “Those are the issues I am going to work on.” Darcy said those issues include care for seniors, affordable child care, learning conditions for kids in schools, transportation planning that doesn’t treat New Westminster like an intersection, environmental protection and climate change. “I want to say thank you to everybody who got out and voted. I want to say thank you to everybody who got involved in any of the candidates’ campaigns. I want

Winner: Above, Judy Darcy is jubilant as she is declared the winner in New Westminster. City councillor Chuck Puchmayr, a former NDP MLA, congratulates her on Tuesday night at The Heritage Grill. At right, Liberal candidate Hector Bremner is pleased that his party won in B.C. to acknowledge the incredibly hard work that the other candidates put into the campaigns’ efforts. It takes a lot of personal energy and resources. It is very demanding. I have the greatest respect for anybody who puts themselves forward in the electoral process,” she said. “Most of all, I want to thank the voters of New Westminster for giving me the incredible honour of being their MLA. That’s the first time I have said that.”

‘I’d say the results are good for the province and not good for New Westminster’ – Bremner

New Westminster’s voting history since 1966

BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER

1969

tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

New Westminster Liberal candidate Hector Bremner wasn’t surprised in the least to see his party top the polls on election night. Although votes were still being tallied at The Record’s press time, the Liberals appeared to be headed to forming a majority government. “There was no doubt in my mind that we would form government again,” Bremner said. “I have been completely clear on that. Adrian (Dix) was getting a pass from the media and everybody about a lot of different things. Christy (Clark) would say one thing and all hell would break loose.” Bremner said it’s clear that his campaign helped build support for the Liberals in New Westminster. “People were genuinely excited about seeing something different happen in New Westminster, not just a passing of the baton, another coronation,” he said, referring to the NDP stronghold. With 102 of 103 polls counted, NDP candidate Judy Darcy had 10,270 votes, compared to Bremner ’s 7,208. Following behind were Green party candidate Terry Teather at 1,745, Conservative candidate Paul Forseth at 1,011, independent

candidate James Crosty at 851 and Libertarian candidate Lewis Dahlby at 153. Bremner believes British Columbians made a wise choice in reelecting the B.C. Liberals. “I don’t see another group that worked harder than us. I think we had the right plan, the right agenda. I think we put forward the right message. We actually stayed positive. We put forward a vision-based plan for New Westminster,” he said. “I am really, really happy that fortunately the province is going to remain on the right track for the next four years. It’s a crucial four years, as I have said throughout this campaign.” Green party candidate Terry Teather was thrilled with the fact that his party elected its first MLA to the legislature. Andrew Weaver was elected MLA for Oak Bay – Gordon Head, becoming the party’s first MLA. “I think this is fantastic,” Teather said. “I think it is outstanding. It allows us to build on that.” Teather was surprised at the Liberals’ victory. “It goes to show you can’t put a lot of faith in the polls,” he said. Conservative candidate Paul Forseth was pleased with the election results provincially. “I’d say the results are good for the province and not good for New Westminster,” he said.

“I have a deep respect for all the candidates in New Westminster. They were all really good. We had a predictable result in New Westminster.” Forseth said he hoped to bring conservative values to the legislature, values that include fiscal and personal responsibility. “I have talked about conservative values,” said Forseth, who has represented the city in Ottawa as a Member of Parliament. “Those conservative values in some respect have been supported but

supported through the Liberal Party.” Forseth was surprised at how well the Green Party fared across B.C. At The Record’s press time, the Greens had 8.22 per cent of the vote in New Westminster, compared to the Conservatives’ 4.76 per cent. Independent candidate James Crosty said he’ll be holding Darcy’s “feet to the fire” to ensure she continues to apply pressure to have a new high school built. www.twitter.com/TheresaMcManus

Zipline to park nixed – not high enough Seismic needs push overpass opening to October 2013 BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

It appears the city’s proposal to consider a zipline at Westminster Pier Park has hit a snag. As part of the detailed design work being done to improve access to the waterfront park, city council had authorized staff to proceed with work on developing an overpass that includes stairs and an elevator connection to Westminster Pier Park from Fourth Street. Council also asked staff to investigate the feasibility of installing a seasonal zipline from the viewing platform to Westminster Pier Park.

A staff report stated that a leading zipline operator said the height of the viewing platform isn’t high enough to provide a safe, commercial viable operation. The elevation between the viewing platform and the landing platform would only be 1.5 metres, which is considered insufficient for zipline operation. Roger Emanuels, the city’s manager of design and construction, said the height between the takeoff platform and the landing platform isn’t enough to create an entertaining ride. The City of New Westminster had hoped to have the overpass completed by September 2013, but it’s now adjusted the completion date to October. “The detailed design work is just being done,” Emanuels said. “They are

finalizing the foundation requirements.” According to a staff report, the need for additional geotechnical investigation and foundation design to meet seismic requirements has delayed the anticipated completion date by a month. Emanuels told council Monday that the soil at Westminster Pier Park “needs to be densified” as part of the overpass construction. As part of the tendering process, Emanuels said the city would be able to consider bids that could fast track construction of the overpass. Mayor Wayne Wright asked that staff report back to council as the project proceeds. “October is not a bad time at all,” he added. “There are still a lot of people out.” Jim Lowrie, the city’s

director of engineering, said the city will try to minimize the impact that construction has on the park by limiting work to the area north of the Lytton Square structure.

Since its opening in June 2012, visitors have only been able to access Westminster Pier Park via a parking lot at the west side of the park, which is the area next to River

Market. The city has budgeted $1.85 million for the overpass, which is based on preliminary designs, and expects to tender construction of the overpass in June.

Puchmayr urges council to oppose new coal facility BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com

A New Westminster city councillor is hoping city council will oppose a coal expansion proposal across the river. At council’s May 13 meeting, Coun. Chuck Puchmayr presented a notice of motion recommending that the city communicate its opposition to the shipping of thermal coal from Fraser Surrey Docks. Council will consider Puchmayr’s notice of motion at its next meeting, which takes place on May 27. Fraser Surrey Docks has submitted a project permit application to Port Metro Vancouver to develop a direct transfer coal facility that could handle up to four million metric tonnes of coal. The site is located across the Fraser River from Westminster Quay. Puchmayr said the city has been trying to get information from Port Metro Vancouver regarding the

health and environmental aspects of the proposed expansion at Fraser Surrey Docks but hasn’t had a lot of success. He said the city has also contacted the federal government about the proposal, but has been told that it’s Port Metro Vancouver’s jurisdiction. “We are not getting results,” he said. “I now feel we have done everything we could have done to get the information.” Rather than opposing the project from the outset, Puchmayr said the city has been trying to gather facts about the proposal. “We are not getting the answers,” he said. “We wanted a public meeting in New Westminster. We have been denied that – we are probably the most dense area that is going to be affected by this.” The preamble to Puchmayr ’s notice of motion states that the facility would be used to “ship volatile thermal coal from the United States” through Fraser Surrey Docks,

which is in the vicinity of “our densely populated city”, and that Port Metro Vancouver has not been able to clearly disclose all health and safety data related to this product, including flame retardant solutions required to stabilize the volatility of this coal. Fraser Surrey Docks is hosting two open houses in Surrey at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford, where people will be able

THREE

to discuss the project and pose questions to Fraser Surrey Docks staff. The meetings are being held on Thursday, May 23 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. Fraser Surrey Docks is accepting feedback on the proposed coal facility until June 7. People can email feedback to @fsd.bc.ca or complete an online questionnaire at www.fsd. bc.ca/index.php/survey.

OUR VIEW

The candidates who earned their stripes during struggles as advocates for health care, small businesses, and sundry other causes, are used to lobbying, pleading and making, and remaking, their cases for change. Hard work and an uphill battle are not new to them. But constant media scrutiny and a system that prefers short, simple answers, rather than longer, complicated solutions, can be demoralizing. The media, of course, are key to the ‘dumb-

ing down’ process of democracy. In many ways, it’s surprising that we do end up with as many good, principled folks in politics as we do. So, to the winners we offer our heartiest congratulations during this brief honeymoon period. To the losers – thank you for stepping up to the plate and allowing us to share your ideas, your enthusiasm, and your belief that win or lose, voters need to have choices to make democracy more than just a word.

Historic election, no matter the outcome IN THE HOUSE

I

t’s always challenging filing a column on the eve of an election, since by the time most people read it, they know the election’s outcome. So predictions can be a precarious proposition. However, I will offer one prediction: this election will go down as one the most pivotal ones in B.C. history. The NDP, according to reputable pollsters such as Ipsos Reid and Angus Reid, had a strong lead in public support heading into the campaign’s final days. The prospect of an election win looked to be the best in more than 20 years. If the NDP can’t win under the circumstances – facing an unpopular leader of an unpopular government, and leading in the polls for so long – the question of whether the party can ever win will come up, and I’m not sure what the answer will be for many people. The B.C. Liberals face possible extinction if they can’t pull off a miracle win, or at the very least win enough seats to form a credible Opposition. We’ve seen the so-called “free-enterprise coalition” fall apart and disappear before (see: Social Credit party).

This brings us to the two leaders. If the NDP loses, Dix will undoubtedly face many critics within his own ranks. The NDP is very good at taking down its leaders at the slightest sign of weakness (see: Mike Harcourt, Glen Clark and Carole James), and Dix may well face a revolt of some kind. However, it may be Christy Clark who faces the sharpest knives. If she wins, then those knives will of course be sheathed, at least for a while. This election will also be studied by political scientists for other reasons, notably the contrasting styles the two parties took through the campaign. The B.C. Liberals ran an angry, relentlessly negative campaign that routinely issued false and misleading statements about all kinds of things. Clark was called on this by the media – national columnists such as Gary Mason from the Globe and Mail and Brian Hutchinson from the National Post wrote scathing columns, and Global B.C. and other news outlets conducted “reality checks” that questioned the B.C. Liberal claims. Yet, for all the criticism, the B.C. Liberals actually went up in public support (according to the polls) using this approach. The NDP ran a costly positive campaign that stressed their platform, and only at the end did the party switch gears and ◗Campaigns Page 7

Everyone should know coal risks Dear Editor:

Every living being on this planet and not just the residents of New Westminster, Surrey, Delta and White Rock should take heed of this new Fraser Surrey dock site for coal. This low grade coal originates in the eastern United States, the world’s biggest producer of coal, but strong opposition from Washington and Oregon to build a coal port in those states has shifted their attention to B.C., because regulations and environmental concerns here are more lax. Trainloads of coal from the U.S. will pass through White Rock and Delta to the proposed new docks in Surrey. Canada in turn will barge it up to Texada Island to the deep sea port there, for export to China the world’s biggest consumer of coal. The fossil fuel wasted to transport this stuff is reason enough to

call a halt to this proposal. Port Metro Vancouver’s (essentially the federal government) proposal talks about “air quality and an environmental review component,” but if this were a serious scientific study including climate change and environmental damage and not just safety concerns around the handling of coal and flying coal dust, the idea would get a resounding thumbs down. This proposal is backed solely by our federal government’s greed for profit with local and global environmental concerns coming last for consideration. And all this from a country and a province that calls itself a leader in green action. Coal is responsible for about one third of world’s greenhouse gas releases, so we clearly know it is not an environmentally friendly product, slightly less is liquefied natural gas, the cornerstone of Christy Clark’s future for B.C. ◗China Page 7

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ◗ continued from page 6

The federal government (through Port Metro Vancouver) has carte blanche to do what it likes and will simply pay lip service to any protest or dissent. Our local New Westminster politicians are against this proposal but rather than coming out strongly against this project, will only call for due process and public consultation or information meetings, as if those do anything more than give the proponents of these plans a chance to say “well, we consulted the public” before totally ignoring the consultations and going ahead with the project anyway. The only local (potential) politician who is actually doing something is James Crosty, who has started a petition against this proposal. We look with disdain on China, which opens a new coal-fired plant every day. However, are we not the ones feeding their filthy habit and in so doing making a mockery of our green standing? This hypocrisy makes us just as responsible as if we were burning the coal ourselves. Their fouled air is also our fouled air. Around the planet we all breathe the same stuff. Cut off the supply of cheap coal to China, and they will be forced to consider more environmentally friendly, energy producing ways. Encouraging them only seals our fate. Our planet is rapidly turning into a place unfit for humans. Some notable scientists (James Lovelock, for one) are predicting that 80 per cent of humanity could be wiped out by the end of this century – yes, that’s in only 87 years’ time. Many other scientists are saying it’s already too late. Even if they are wide off the mark in their predictions, should we not take heed and at least try to reverse this trend? Our elected officials always tell us we must make decisions with our future generations in mind. You can make all the money in the world, but that will not restore a planet that our kids and their kids, etc., can live on. There is one sure-fire way to make our politicians listen seriously to our concerns. Write, email or phone your municipal mayor and council, provincial politicians and especially our federal leaders, they are easy to contact. Once they understand the public is outraged at their ambiguity towards the environment and this proposal and that their elected future as politicians is at risk, then they will listen, but only then.

Tax cuts chip at spending Dear Editor:

Re: Selective facts in letter, Letters, The Record, May 10. Now look who’s using selective facts? Alan McNulty talks about the Great Recession and the decrease in natural resource royalties clobbering government revenues from 2008 to 2012. Why doesn’t he mention the tax cuts clobbering B.C. government revenue to the tune of nearly $4 billion dollars per year every year since the year 2000? Or that these tax cuts mainly went to the rich and big corporations? Or that studies show that these corporate tax cuts have not resulted in increased job creation or the infamous trickle-down? And why did we have that Great Recession in 2008? Because the rich were (and still are) using the money they should be paying in taxes to play stock market poker and to build the pyramid schemes that partly crashed down, instead of paying their fair share of taxes and contributing back to the society that allowed them to amass such huge amounts of wealth. It was a political decision to cut taxes again and again, resulting in this loss of government revenue, money needed to pay for the public infrastructure and services we value and depend on our government to fund with our tax dollars. Mr. McNulty writes that health care and education take up “71 per cent” of total spending and will take up “90 per cent of spending by 2023.” Well, the government knows healthcare and education are extremely popular public programs. They know there would be a huge public outcry if they openly cut these wellloved services. They have already purposefully cut their own revenue, and now they have an excuse to chop away at anything they can get away with. This makes it look like health care and education spending is growing when it is actually the spending on everything else that is shrinking. Look at it this way. A meatball takes up more space on a small plate than it does on a big plate, even though the meatball stays the same size. And more and more of that plate, and the healthy parts of the meal that fit on it, are being systematically sliced away and given to those who already have more than enough to eat. Well, I want the full-meal deal, not half the facts.

hurl grenades at the B.C. Liberal track record. At no time, however, did the party engage in the kind of personal attacks that were routinely part of the other camp’s strategy. But the NDP lost ground during the cam-

paign, according to those polls. A once insurmountable lead shrunk to single digits. Does that suggest people aren’t inspired by the positive approach and are lured by the negative? Whatever the outcome, it’s bound to have an

impact far greater and farther reaching than the last two elections and many more before them. Keith Baldrey is the chief political reporter for Global B.C. To contact him, send an email to Keith.Baldrey@ globalnews.ca.

◗ FEDERAL POLITICS

Most talkative MP

BY JENNIFER MOREAU REPORTER editorial@royalcityrecord.com

Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian runs the fastest mouth in Ottawa, according to Samara, a non-partisan organization that analyzes politics. Thecharitablethink-tankcountedwords spoken by MPs in the House of Commons last year and found that Julian was the most verbose, with 226,027 words. “Since I’ve started in Parliament, I’ve been on the most-active list regularly,” Julian told the NOW. “Being most active in the house for 2012 is an honour, but I just think it’s also just part of the job. We’re elected to speak out on behalf of constituents.” Julian, the NDP’s energy and natural resources critic, spent a lot of time speaking against the takeover of Canadian energy company Nexen by CNOOC, a state-run Chinese oil company. Julian was also a regular critic of the Conservative’s budgetary measures. “One of the things I found most interesting is the NDP has a third of the members in the House of Commons but nearly half of the activity,” Julian said, “which shows me we are doing what we were asked to do by our voters.” Second place for most-talkative MP went to Liberal Kevin Lamoureux, MP for Winnipeg North, with 222,451 words spoken, and Green party leader Elizabeth May was third, at 174,783. The projections were based on analyses of 54 days of debate in the House of Commons over three periods in 2012.

NEW BIKE GANG IN TOWN ENCOURAGES KIDS TO RIDE THEIR BICYCLES

Royal City Rangers hit the road T

here’s a new bike gang in town. But don’t worry, this one is made up of grade schoolers who want to wheel up and down the city’s steep terrain with a group of like-minded riders. Local writer and father-of-two, JJ Lee hatched the bike club plan. He’s calling it the Royal City Rangers. (The name’s inspired by an Boys Life magazine ad for the Ranger bicycle from 1913.) The club was only a couple NIKI HOPE of weeks old when The Record talked to Lee from his New West home, but he had already launched a website and had at least two fellow members, his nine-year-old twin boys, Emmet and Jack. Lee explains how he came up with the bike club plan: “A week ago, the warm weather finally started … I biked to school (with the kids), thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, there will be so many bicycles today. There will be lots of bikes.’ There were no bikes, except the boys, and we’re regular cyclists,” Lee says. After looking at the barren bike rack at the kids’ school, Lee started thinking about ways to boost ridership in the city. He talked to other cyclists and city staff about the challenges local riders face and saw a need to address New Westminster-specific barriers to riding. “For example, many of the kids that go to John Robson (Elementary) live in apartment buildings that don’t have bike lock-ups,” Lee says, explaining one of the reasons there are so few riders at his sons’ school. “The problem is responding to a problem like that is it takes a lot of development … so, what happens if we just make bike riding fun, which it already it is.” Lee says New West riders can’t just saunter down to Canadian Tire and grab the first bike they see, like a heavy cruiser. “Hello! Beaches are flat,” Lee says. “My bike is a modified mongoose mountain bike frame that I bought for $15 at a garage sale, and I’ve stripped all of the weight off of it.” He rebuilt it and turned it into a hill climber. “I never break a sweat going uphill,” Lee says. “That’s a perfect example of having local knowledge inform your bike choices,” Lee adds.

His father’s many DUI-related car accidents is one reason Lee never got his driver’s licence. As for the next plan for the Royal City Rangers, Lee is contemplating a trip from the New Westminster Quay to New Westminster Pier Park where the club can hang out, chat and check out each other’s bikes. He also wants input from other parents on what they’d want to see for the club. It’s still a work-in-progress, but Lee hopes it will take off. “Ultimately, I just want to have the ability to have families come together and bike ride and change the way they think about bikes,” says Lee. CITY AR TIST PIECES TOGETHER WHAT BECAME OF WOODLANDS CEMETERY

Unearthing what was once forgotten BY CAYLEY DOBIE REPORTER editorial@royalcityrecord.com

In 1920, the then Provincial Hospital for the Insane first buried a deceased patient in a cemetery behind the asylum building in New Westminster. For 38 years the cemetery was the final resting place for more than 3,000 patients and residents who died in the institution. It’s been 10 years since Michael de Courcy finished his Asylum project, which was a multi-media exhibition that examined Woodlands before the final building was torn down. Since then, de Courcy said he always felt there was some unfinished business calling him back to the site. His latest project, called Dead and Buried: What became of the cemetery at Woodlands? is a virtual exhibition that maps out the 3,065 plots at the old Woodlands Cemetery site – now the Woodlands Memorial Garden. “It was like peeling an onion and getting to the real story here,” he said. “When I was looking at Woodlands I was also looking at the cemetery; it was starting to catch my eye. It was a beautiful cemetery, it didn’t have the memorial garden or anything, there were a few stones left.” In fact, there were nine stones remaining on the site, in their original positions. These grave stones, along with the trees – which now tower over the cemetery – are the only things that remain from the old

Cemetery: Project offers closure ◗ continued from page 13

later, Matilda was buried at the Woodlands Cemetery. Montalbetti and de Courcy met at the cemetery in early May to map out the exact location of her grandmother’s grave. They were able to find it using the GPS coordinates and a tape measure. Anyone who visits can find a small orange tie near the centre of the cemetery. “When I went out to the site I felt really emotional because I thought ‘my goodness, I’ve finally found her,’” Montalbetti said. “I think it’s amazing what (Michael’s) done.” Montalbetti came across De Courcy’s website while she was tracing her grandmother’s death. The New Westminster archives suggested she speak with de Courcy. The experience provided answers to questions that couldn’t have been answered

without de Courcy’s help, she said. “My project gives people the opportunity to reestablish a connection with the actual ground that their family are buried in,” he said. “It’s closure, in a way. It’s a gap in their genealogy that they’ve kind of filled.” The project is also about New Westminster, and showcasing an important part of its history. No matter how you feel about Woodlands, everyone in the city is linked to the site, de Courcy said. During his research he spoke with many people who remembered someone who worked there or lived there. “It was very close to the heart of everyone in this community,” he said. “It made me feel closer to the community, too.” The project and the cemetery map can be viewed at www.michaeldecourcy.com/ dead_and_buried.

rganizers of Spring Cleaning for your Mind, Body and Soul are grateful to the community for its “amazing support.” Heidi Clarkson, Robyn Murrell and Sonja Curry – the Spring Cleaning team – want to acknowledge the supporters who made the April 13 event a success. “Not only did the event raise awareness for local small businesses, groups and organizations that promote health and wellness, it supported the Canadian Cancer Society’s April Fight Back campaign in a big way,” wrote the team in a letter to The Record. “A huge thanks go to the three brave New West residents who stepped forward to have their hair shaved for cancer awareness: Robyn Murrell – her long hair was saved at the last minute by a generous supporter who matched her pledges; James Crosty – moustache; and Bud Clarkson – hair.” The team is also thankful to New West hair artist Sarah Thomas who did the shaves. The event raised $3,142 for the Canadian Cancer Society from the shave, raffle proceeds, daffodil pin sales and donations from local businesses. Fraser River Discovery Centre will present a special screening of Hiqw Stó: l_ (Big River) as part of this weekend’s DiverseCity Multicultural Festival. The screening will take place on Saturday, May 18 at 3 p.m. in the Canyon Theatre. This film is part of the Discovery Centre’s exhibit, Our Bones are Made of Salmon and celebrates the enduring traditions of Aboriginal salmon fishing and wind-drying technique in the Fraser Canyon. According to Discovery Centre, Hiqw Stó:l_ (Big River) shares the story of how sockeye salmon came to the Fraser River and why salmon fishing is vital to Aboriginal communities today. Produced by Kamala Todd, a MetisCree filmmaker and community planner who lives in New Westminster, the film includes the oral histories of Stó:l_ cultural advisor Dr. Sonny

coming from the Osoyoos Museum. It runs until Sunday, June 9 and admission is by donation. “While most people think of the War of 1812 in the east, the Astoria, Oregon event had a major impact on the geopolitics of what most people know as the Pacific Northwest,” said the press release. “The aftermath of the war and the joint occupancy of the Oregon Country by British and Americans culminated in the 1846 creation of the boundary between Canada

and the U.S. from the Rockies to the Pacific. The little-known story of the episode is told here with reproductions of historic images, artists conceptions of various events, and reproductions of artifacts from the 1812 period.” The exhibit commemorates the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. 34th Annual New Westminster

Heritage

Home Tour

2013

Sunday, May 26, 2013 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tickets are $35, NWHPS Members $30

You won’t want to miss this year’s outstanding line-up of beautiful homes. Thanks to our sponsors and homeowners who make this tour possible!

How it all began

In 1980, a small group of New Westminster residents incorporated the New Westminster Heritage Preservation Society, in direct response to the demolition of many beautiful heritage homes throughout the city. This new society was not always cordially welcomed, but it was a brash new voice for the growing and important heritage conservation movement in the Royal City. At the time, the idea behind the tour was a simple one: Open up several beautiful heritage homes to public viewing and inspire and educate residents and visitors

Guidelines for tourgoers For us to make the tour a success for you, and respect the wishes of our homeowners who have kindly agreed to put their special homes on tour, here are some guidelines to follow. Ask our fantastic volunteers if you have any questions. And above all else, have a great tour! • The tour is self-guided—the map in the centre of this program will help you make your way to each home. • You may visit each location once in any order between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. • While the use of a car or bike is advisable, New Westminster is not a big city. You can easily enjoy the day and walk. • You will be required to present your ticket program at the door of each destination to gain entry, so keep it with you at all times.

Funding heritage and community development

alike that these architectural gems should be saved ... not bulldozed. Without much fanfare, the first tour was launched on May 24, 1980, as part of the Hyack Festival. There were a few hundred tickets sold at $3.50 each and just five homes on the tour. Thirty-four years later, we can look back with justifiable pride at how the homes tour has grown into one of B.C.’s major showcases of architectural heritage, inspiring other cities to organize similar events in the past few years. The New Westminster Homes Tour is Canada’s longest-running event of its kind, and has brought thousands of visitors to the Royal City to learn about its history and get a glimpse into years past.

Ticket sales help preserve and protect our heritage as well as to enhance our community. In 2013, funds were donated to: • The New Westminster Heritage Foundation, a non-profit society cofunded by the City of New Westminster to financially assist owners of municipally designated heritage homes. The Foundation’s goal: encourage voluntary municipal heritage designation and to assist homeowners in their restoration efforts through the Foundation’s house grants program. • Tourism New Westminster to promote the Royal City’s great attractions, festivals and history. • Grace,Grit andGusto:ProfilesofRemarkableRoyalCityWomen, a book recognizing the many New Westminster women, past and present, who have made significant contributions to their city, province and country. Books are $20 and 100 per cent of proceeds benefit WINGS (Woman in Need Gaining Strength).WINGS operates New Westminster’s Monarch Place which shelters women and children fleeing domestic violence.

A. 1101 Edinburgh Street The William Keith House (1910)

• Wearing slip-on shoes with comfortable socks is extremely wise. Some of our homeowners may require vistors to remove their shoes at the door to protect fragile carpets and floors, especially in the event of rain. • Remember that this tour has been planned for a limited number of people and, as a result, this “ticket” can only be used ONCE without exceptions. • Please ask the volunteers on duty before taking pictures. Some homeowners may prefer that you don’t photograph the interior of their home. • Public washrooms are available at the Justice Institute (the tea venue) and Irving House.

Everyone loves gingerbread...and everyone loves to drive by the “Gingerbread House.” Built in 1910, it was originally an unassuming A-frame home with two bedrooms and front verandah, typical of New Westminster’s West End at that time. The first owner was William Keith, a motorman with British Columbia Electric Railway. Flash forward to the present, when fans of San Francisco’s Victorian-era “Painted Ladies” (not the current owners) purchased the Keith home. It was out with the old and in with the “new”—Victorian ornamentation such as gables, rosettes, barge boards, medallions, casings, crown mouldings, fish-scale shingles, to name a few. B. 1321 Nanaimo Street The Mary and Joseph Marshall House (1908) Making its homes tour debut, this vernacular cottage was built in the Prairie box style—identified by its lowpitched, hipped-roof, upturned eaves, and two small central-hipped dormers facing West and South towards the Fraser River. Originating in Chicago, the Prairie style was popular in the early 1900s. The home is representative of the second wave of working-class development in the Royal City’s West End, providing practical and affordable homes with easy transportation along the B.C. Electric Railway Company’s 12th Street car line to access the downtowns of New Westminster and Vancouver. The current owners plan to use the remaining original features to help replicate what’s missing throughout the house. Make sure you check out the finished upstairs with its lovely views from the dormer windows.

C. 217 Ninth Street The Thomas and Elizabeth Turnbull House (1888) Narrowly missing demolition in the 1980s, this Italianate Victorian cottage’s rehabilitation was started in 1994 by the previous owner and continued by the current owners in 2010 with a beautifully executed kitchen/ pantry/mudroom and duo bathroom renovation. In 1888, Scottish carpenter Thomas Turnbull designed and built this home for $1,500 for his new wife Elizabeth. It was the first house on Ninth Street (called Halifax Street at the time). The Turnbulls raised six children here until 1907, when they moved to a larger home, built by Thomas, at 223 Ninth Street. In 1945, the cottage was converted to a revenue triplex, in response to the post-war housing shortage. The exterior was sheathed in asbestos shingles and the distinctive second-storey verandah, with its unique cross-bar detail evoking the Scottish flag, was enclosed. The house remained like this until the previous owner took on the daunting task of restoring the cottage using original photographs of the house’s exterior as his guide.

Irving House (1865)

D. 302 Royal Avenue

E. 127 Queen’s Avenue This year marks the 100th birthday of this great family home which current owners affectionately call “Nelson’s Folly.” Completed in 1913, it was the estate home of Nels Nelson and his wife Anetta. Nels hailed from Denmark and was the very successful founder of the New Westminster Brewery, located where Labatt’s had its plant in Sapperton. Nels had architects Gardiner and Mercier draw the plans and hired Sloan and Harrison to complete the construction on the site, zoned as four lots. Nelson’s Folly features distinctive English Arts and Crafts elements such as the dining room ceiling with its corner to-corner box beams, complete with pendant lights on each corner, the stained glass window over the built-in sideboard, and a snug Inglenook tucked under the stairs. The Tudor elements found both inside and out include the “peg” heads, William Morris-inspired heart cut-outs on the railings and the plaster scrolling found on the ceiling of the library.

Irving House is the oldest intact house in the Lower Mainland. It is still on its original site and when Captain William Irving had it built in 1865, it was the fanciest house in the city. It is owned by the City of New Westminster and is operated by the New Westminster Museum and Archives (NWMA.) When the house was nearing completion in April 1865 a reporter for The British Columbian newspaper wrote: “The style of the building may be generally defined as mixed Gothic. With a ceiling of 12 feet clear on the ground floor and a hall 8 feet wide running through the main building it has a drawing room ..., a parlor ..., dining-room ..., library ..., bedroom..., kitchen with bath-rooms, storerooms, basement &c. while upon the second floor there are four large bedrooms, with closets . ... the handsomest, ... the best and most home-like house of which British Columbia can yet boast.... The total cost .... [about] $10,000.00. “

The Nels Nelson House (1913) Nels’s passing in 1944 was the end of an era; the Depression and WWII with their accompanying shortages, didn’t foster house building. Returning soldiers and the eventual baby boom created a demand for space. Like many in the neighbourhood, Nelson’s Folly became a rooming house. What might seem a tragic use of a fine house was its saviour. The revenue it generated protected it from the steamroller that was the building boom of the modern ‘50s. Queen’s Park experienced a heritage renaissance in the ‘80s; concerned citizens and the Heritage Preservation Society worked hard to foster it. New owners returned Nelson’s Folly to its original exterior condition, winning a Heritage Builder’s award for their complete exterior refurbishment, which included having Royal City Glass restore all the original heritage windows.

“Honour House” is a remarkable home with a colourful history, past and present. It was originally the home of Claude and Stella Pineo, who became locally famous in 1937 when Claude won the Irish Sweepstakes, providing the financing for this remarkable 9,000 sq. ft. home. In 1963, the home was converted to become Blue Spruce Cottage, a care home, which it remained until 2010. Extensive modifications were made to the house, removing or altering many of the interior and exterior features as required for the repurposing of the residence to a care home. On April 16, 2010, Blue Spruce Cottage was purchased by the Honour House Society to provide a home away from home for the families of the Canadian Military and first responders such as police, firefighters, and paramedics receiving medical care in Greater Vancouver. The society rehabilitated the home while also providing 10 units to stay while healing occurs. The home is in the late Colonial Revival style, and is characterized by accentuated front doors accented by columns supporting a covered entry portico and central Palladian window. Colonial Revival homes normally are symmetrical in their front facades, balancing window placement and design with gabled roofs sloping front and back. This two-storey home also features an arched-window sunroom on its west side, off-setting but echoing the street-faced symmetry.

The home was built for local hardware merchant Herbert Thomas Kirk and his wife Mary, one of three homes in the Queen’s Park neighbourhood the family owned. It wasn’t the first house built at the corner of Third Avenue and Third Street owned by the Kirks; in 1894, they owned a small Victorian cottage but later moved it down the street to the corner of Warren Avenue (named after Mrs. Kirk’s maiden name) to make way for their impressive new home around 1905. The original Kirk cottage still stands at 228 Third Street, missing its wonderful shingling and Victorian detail and now covered in stucco. The Kirks didn’t stay at this location very long, moving to 321 Fourth Avenue in 1908 (that house was named “Eldora” after the Kirks’ daughters, Elsie and Dora). The Kirk house became known as the place for future dancers to learn their steps after 1929, when Josephine Slater bought the house. She had moved from Vancouver where she ran the Lyndon Studio of Dancing. She named it the Slater Dancing School, and many great dancers were trained there, including Norbert Vesak, who went on to be a choreographer for the Metropolitan Opera ballet. The house later became home to the Boswell Dance Academy. The original interior rooms were renovated to make room for the dance classes; even its grand main staircase was ripped out, along with most of its original windows, and the outside clad in vinyl siding. It was in bad shape and empty when the present owners bought the property in autumn 2008. A few months later, they began the heroic job of returning the house to its original purpose as a single family residence.

The Edward and Livinia Savage House (1913)

This handsome house is celebrating its 100th birthday in style this year. Built in 1913 by well-known local contractor Horace Gostick, this clapboard-and-shingle home was built in the Arts-and-Crafts-style and retains many original features. As with many Queen’s Park homes, this house had been turned into a rooming house (likely in the 1950s). In the late’70s, this site, in addition to the next-door property (which was then an empty lot but has since been developed with a West Coast-style house) and the adjacent property, were slated for demolition to allow for construction of an apartment building, but a group of local residents organized to oppose the project. This led to the formation of the New Westminster Heritage Preservation Society and the annual homes tour, to raise awareness of the importance of retaining the city’s dwindling stock of older homes. The Savage house survived and was restored by subsequent owners— much to the delight of the current residents who admit that while they’ve added a few touches, most of what you see is the result of the previous owners who worked diligently to return the house to a lovely family home. Note: on this special dining room table will be a display of the book Grace, Grit and Gusto: Profiles of Remarkable Royal City Women. It’s about Royal City women and is written by Royal City women. The book recognizes the many New Westminster women, past and present, who have made significant contributions to their city, province and country. The New Westminster Heritage Preservation Society proudly helped fund its publication and supports its celebration of these remarkable women who made...and are making history. Books are $20 and 100 per cent of proceeds benefit WINGS (Woman in Need Gaining Strength).WINGS operates New Westminster’s Monarch Place which shelters women and children fleeing domestic violence.

The Reginald and Kathleen Ashworth House (1927)

Although this lovely home was on tour in 2010, the homeowner had such a positive experience she asked to be on again to showcase her newly designed bathrooms which will certainly appeal to fans of the many popular home and garden renovation shows on HGTV. Here’s your chance to get ideas for that bathroom do-over! The house built in 1927 for Reginald and Kathleen Ashworth. Mr. Ashworth was a well-known teacher and principal in the local school district. The Ashworth house is a fine example of a 1920s home that incorporates elements of a Cape Cod dormered cottage and the Dutch Colonial style. It’s one of the few such homes in the city. One of the most striking features is simply the light. The sunlight streams through the many windows on all sides of this home. Its corner location and an abundance of windows help the home avoid being overshadowed by the large trees across the street in Queen’s Park.

J. 618 Fourth Street

The Adolphus and Blanche Beckwith House (1936)

This lovely bungalow was built in 1936 as a sturdy one-and-a-half-storey cottage in the Glenbrook neighbourhood. The first residents were Adolphus John Beckwith and his bride Blanche Cecelia (nee Robinson.) Aldophus Beckwith worked as a driver and machinist with Pacific Coast Terminal which was located on the Fraser River at the site of today’s River Market (Quay) boardwalk. At that time, the company handled general cargo such as apples, wood and refrigerated food. When the present owners purchased the property in 2005, they were more enamoured of the large lot than the house, which was made up of small rooms and steep staircases. Some necessary changes were made to the kitchen, and the basement was expanded and finished. After living in the house for a few years and welcoming their third child, the owners decided this home was indeed worth keeping— but with some major alterations. They carefully drew up plans for their dream renovation and, in November 2010, moved in with family members nearby as construction began. This lovely “new” old home was finished in December 2011.

2013

This beautiful Arts-and-Crafts-style house was built in 1912 by John Hicks at a cost of$3,000, using local contractor William Mercer. It’s an early design of local architect Robert M. Matheson, who later joined another talented architect, Fred L. Townley, to form the firm Townley and Matheson, who designed landmark buildings such as Vancouver City Hall and New Westminster’s Columbia Theatre (formerly “The Burr”). Arthur Smith and his family lived in the home until the present owners bought it in 1993. The new owners have undertaken a detailed restoration to return this lovely home back to its period splendour. Throughout this house you will be treated to one of the finest collections of Arts and Crafts furnishings, fixtures and fittings within the city. The exterior of the house had been stuccoed, and most of the wooden windows were replaced with aluminum ones when the house was modernized in 1972. The interior of this home has had minor alterations made to it throughout the years. Most of the wood trim and panelling are original, and have never been painted except for the kitchen and upper bathroom.

Knox Presbyterian Church (1891)

Knox Presbyterian Church in Sapperton was built in 1891 after the members of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church had decided that the growing community of Sapperton warranted the construction of a mission church there.. The church was designed by local architect George W. Grant in a Gothic-revival style and cost $3500 to build. The church, though small, has the feel of a cathedral, yet stays true to the Presbyterian tradition in its simplicity of ornamentation; only a wooden cross and patterned stained glass decorate the sanctuary. When it was built, the church consisted solely of the sanctuary, vestibule, and narthex, and 250 kitchen chairs for seating. Though there have been rumours that the steeple did at one time contain a bell, no one seems to know the truth of these tales. Please note that while Knox Presbyterian Church is open 10 to 5 p.m. there will be restrictions on when tourgoers can view the stained glass and historical wall. Everyone is invited to attend the 90-minute sermons that start at 11 a.m. and later in the afternoon at 3 p.m. (in Korean) but visitors during those times are asked to sit quietly in the pews. The glass and the wall will not be available for viewing during the sermons. The best times to view those would be 12:30 to 2:30 or first thing in morning or late in the afternoon.

The William and Christina Hill House (1959)

This classic example of a mid-century modern home was built in 1959, in the heart of Massey Heights, for William and Christina Hill. Bill Hill was the owner of long-time New Westminster icon, Fogg Motors. This architectural style emphasized the use of ample windows and open floor plans. Many mid-century houses utilized what was then ground-breaking post-and-beam design, apparent in the dining room and kitchen of this home. The home has only had three owners since it was completed. There have been no major renovations with the exception of an extension to the living room undertaken by the Hills shortly after the home was built. A breezeway ran along the front of the house from the carport to the front entrance. The second owners replaced the white shag carpet with wood floors, installed gas fireplaces in the living room and family room and created open shelving in the dining room where there had been a planter. Crown moulding was added above the fireplace which conceals a planter. The current owners have plans to make some cosmetic changes to the home in the near future but, “only to enhance it, not change it.”

Festival highlights city diversity New Westminster now much more diverse than when festival first took place years ago BY CAYLEY DOBIE REPORTER editorial@royalcityrecord.com

It’s been more than 11 years since the first New Westminster’s DiverseCity Multicultural Festival, and with a decade of celebrating the city’s diversity behind us, it’s time to ask just how diverse is New Westminster? According to John Stark – senior social planner for city – it’s very diverse. “One of the stats which was most surprising to me was between 2001 and 2006, 79.1 per cent of the population growth was due to immigration,” he said. This growth has only continued. According to the 2011 census, New Westminster’s population increased to 65,976. The city’s neighbourhood profiles report states the immigrant population is growing at a “slightly faster” rate than the rest of the Lower Mainland. The report also states that between 2001 and 2006, more people emigrated from the Philippines than China. Furthermore, almost 30 per cent of New Westminster’s population identified themselves as a visible minority. The most common visible minorities included South

New toys for hospital ward Playtime for sick kids at Royal Columbian Hospital just got a lot more fun. Two Grade 7 students in Coquitlam recently held a toy drive for the hospital’s children’s ward and gathered 26 boxes of items to be delivered there. The toys couldn’t have arrived at a better time, said Michelle Dersch, pediatrics patient care coordinator at the hospital. “We purge toys on a regular basis to ensure we meet infection control standards, and it has been a long time since we’ve received any new toys for our young patients to play with,” she said in a press release. “Not only do the children being treated at RCH benefit from the distraction of having these toys to play with, but so do their siblings who spend time here, as well.” Giordana Masi and her friend Olivia D’Agostini, both 13, said they wanted to support the hospital where they were both born. “Sometimes you are so lucky and others may not have the same opportunities, and we think it is important to try to bring those opportunities to them,” said Giordana, in the press release, and

Olivia agreed: “We were both born here, and we’ve been cared for here, so we wanted to make kids’ stays

Building literary exposure, verse by verse editorial@royalcityrecord.com

Poet laureates are hired based on their careers, expertise and, of course, talent. They’re responsible for the artistic growth of the city or town employing them. In 2010, Candice James was named poet laureate of New Westminster. James is now beginning her second term. “When I became poet laureate, there were 17 across Canada and it’s becoming more popular for cities to have poet laureates … there could be 22 or 23 (in Canada) now,” she said. James has been writing poetry since she was in her 30s. She had to drive her daughter to a school program in Burnaby and because she was living in Crescent Beach, rather than drive home, she would sit in her car and wait for her daughter to finish. James passed her time writing. She wrote about everyday things and she wrote about love, loss and grief. She published her first book of poems in 1979 after a friend sent her work to the

“I’ve started up a new literary society in New West called the (Royal City) Literary Arts Society,” she said. She hopes the society will expand on what the arts council does, focusing more specifically on the written word. “It’d be nice to have something just for words, just for literary, just for people that write,” she said. James also spearheaded Poetic Justice, which is a weekly open mike night for poets to perform their work. For the remaining three years of her term, James hopes to inspire more local poets to come out of the woodwork. “What I would really like to see in the next three years is I’d really like to see Royal City Literary Arts Society really flourish, and that’s a top priority,” she said. “I’d like to see more and more poets get involved, come out, (and) get up on these stages.”

Big bike for heart health A number of community groups and businesses took a spin around the Royal City to support life-saving research. The Heart and Stroke Big Bike made its annual appearance in New Westminster on May 7, giving community organizations, companies and groups a chance to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Teams of up to 29 riders committed to raise a mini-

mum of $50 each, and pedal through the community in support of heart disease and stroke research. Thornebridge Gardens, Canadian Auto Workers, Starlight Casino, Mainroad Contracting and the Ministry of Transportation participated in the ride that got underway at Sixth and Sixth. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Big Bike is a vital

fundraiser and engages Canadians across the country. In 2012, more than 50,000 riders in over 200 communities helped raise $7.9 million for life-saving research. “This is helping Canadians make health last in order to live longer, fuller lives,” said a news release form the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

The goal this season for the New Westminster Salmonbellies in the Western Lacrosse Association is to get themselves back to 2009. Although the gravity of that overtime loss to Brampton in the Mann Cup still weighs heavy on the minds of players and fans alike, it’s a demon that must be faced. The results of the last three seasonss showed a slow but steady decline that had to be addressed. In a number of ways, the Salmombellies should be better equipped to put last year’s unexpected fifth-place finish out of their minds for good and start down a new road. For starters, the senior A ‘Bellies drafted well this year with playmaker Logan Schuss and versatile defender Jeff Cornwall sure to make an impact on their chosen ends of the floor this summer. Also incoming are righthanders Keegan Bal, Matt Zinn and Reagan Harding, who could find the WLA very much to his liking and playing style. Not expected back this season due to work or time commitments are Tyler Crompton, Ian Hawksbee, Eric Lewthwaite and possibly Corbyn Tao. Jeff Zywicki was released ear-

Curtis Manning is also expected to play this season after taking 2012 off. All in all, this gives incoming head coach Steve

Goodwin a good starting point to right the ship that last year posted an 8-1 home record but was a league-worst away from Queen’s Park. “Who knows where it will all end up. Some changes we made and others are work contributed, but my goal is to be more

athletic. We need to be,” Goodwin said. While Goodwin likes the young blood incoming this year, he also feels the league as a whole is tightening up. “If you take a night off, I think you can be had,” Goodwin added. “But Langley is the team to

Three-province Minto days done in 2014 BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

The Canadian Lacrosse Association announced the return to the popular best-of-seven East versus West playoff format for the Minto Cup in 2014. A standing committee of the CLA and the Minto Cup committee recently came to an agreement that will see the junior A champions from B.C. and Alberta play off in a best-of-five series, with the winner moving on to take on the champion from the east in a bestof-seven affair at the Minto Cup national championships. “We recognize that now is a time for change – 10 years ago change was set in motion that brought the Minto Cup to a new level, adding a third member association into the competition; today, we accept change once again,”

Joey Harris, CLA president said in an association press release. “The Minto Cup championship showcases the best of what our sport has to offer – that has always been the case – but we have seen that the four-team format has not been the best format for those currently involved, and also to those that may want to get involved in the future at this level. We have a responsibility to our athletes and the sport, working within the core values of the CLA, to make decisions that will advance and develop lacrosse nationally.” “I like the idea of a seven-game series. Some of the great Minto Cups from the past were seven games,” said New Westminster head coach and former Burnaby Cablevision Minto star Dan Perreault. “I like the format, and for the fans there’s nothing better than a good, tight seven-game

series. You want to draw fans and that’s the best way to do it. I think it’s a good decision. I think it’s great for lacrosse.” Under the new format, B.C. will host the first seven-game series, while Ontario will return the favour in 2015. In order to continue to grow the game and expose growing markets to the elite level of junior lacrosse in Canada, the 2016 Minto Cup will be played in Alberta, the release stated. The Western finals will also take place in Alberta prior to the start of the Minto playoffs. In other Minto Cup news, New Westminster’s Queen’s Park Arena will be the venue for the this year’s national championship. Hosted by the British Columbia Lacrosse Association and the B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League, the Canadian junior A national championship will operate in its current

four-team format. The top two teams from B.C. will earn berths into this year’s Minto. The host club will not receive an automatic berth. The championship will start with round-robin play on Saturday, Aug. 17 at Queen’s Park Arena. After four days of round-robin play, the championship round will begin with the final two teams competing for the coveted title in a best-of-five playoff series. “We are ready to put on a great event here in B.C,” said B.C. junior A commissioner and host organizer of the 2013 Minto Cup, Ken Wood, in the release. “We look forward to welcoming the Ontario and Alberta champions to the West Coast in August. The women remained the flagship of the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club earning a sixth provincial title at the B.C. Rugby championships in Victoria on Saturday. The Laker women took the game to their Vancouver Island hosts in the opening half and held on to defeat the defending Gordon Harris Memorial Cup champion Velox Valkyries 17-13 in the women’s premier final. It was the fourth final for Burnaby Lake against Velox and third in a row. “Two years ago, we stole on on the last play. Last year, we lost by six and this year, it was really a onepoint game,” said women’s team coach Walt Brandl. Abby Goodwin scored a first-half try for the winners and Julia Sugawara booted three penalties to give the visitors a 14-3 lead at the interval. But in a game that became a battle of halves, Velox rallied in the latter period, scoring tries from captain Brittany Sims and fullback Selina McGinnis. With Burnaby Lake on the defensive, the fivetime women’s champions played a man down after Maria Gallo was shown the sidelines with a yellow card. But despite being a player down, Burnaby Lake proved resilient, managing a rally of its own, which led to a fourth three-point penalty by Sugawara at full time. The difference was experience, said Brandl. “We’ve got more players who have been there,” he said. “Even when (Maria) Gallo got carded, no one was wringing their hands. “The technical stuff you teach, but that stuff you don’t teach. They’re mentally tough – the leadership group is rock solid.” “We targeted beating them to the ball. It’s our style of play,” added Sugawara in a B.C. Rugby press release. Having been in the real estate business for over 20 years I have certainly experienced a few election affected markets. This one is no different. Regardless of the outcome, people tend to sit on the sidelines and postpone purchasing or selling a home before a provincial or federal election. A savvy buyer is active before an election taking advantage of the lack of sales to negotiate a great price. The savvy seller will list their home on the heels of an election and try to catch the rising wave of buyers getting back in the game post election!

Q.

We own a small simple heritage home with a considerable amount of knob and tube wiring still in use. We have upgraded the panel and the service to 110 amp. We even rewired the kitchen and bathroom when we renovated several years ago. We have heard of sales collapsing because of insurance hurdles with knob and tube wiring. Should we remove the remainder of the knob and tube before we sell?

A.

Although removal is one way to solve the problem, it’s also very expensive. Having an electrical appraisal done on your home is the way to go. In many cases only minor changes need to be made to bring a home to a minimum, or even a low risk insurance level. The cost is usually under $500.00. Every home is different, but knowing the state of your electrical system is a natural first step. Feel free to contact me regarding a credible company who can do this work and provide documentation for the buyer confirming that the property is insurable. Then call me and let’s get you in the game!

from the provincial Homeowner Protection Office (HPO) website. This easy-to-use resource helps homebuyers find out if a home has a policy of home warranty insurance and is built by a licensed residential builder, or if it is built without home warranty insurance. Homebuyers can obtain valuable information such as the name and contact number of the warranty provider, the builder’s warranty number, and if an owner-built home can be legally offered for sale. “Prospective homebuyers are using the New Homes Registry to make more informed purchasing decisions,” explained Wendy Acheson, Vice President and Registrar for the HPO, a branch of BC Housing. With a growing number of tech savvy homebuyers using the registry, it’s also an essential tool for today’s realtor. Homebuyers, as well as realtors, lawyers, local governments and others, can quickly check the residential builder licensing and warranty status of a new home or a new home under construction. “Homes suspected of being illegally built

or where home warranty insurance has been withdrawn prior to issuance, will be flagged on the registry as being ‘under investigation’ as an alert to consumers and others,” said Acheson. The New Homes Registry is one of several ways in which the HPO works with industry to protect homebuyers. The HPO also monitors the application of the Homeowner Protection Act regulations pertaining to home warranty insurance, and provides advice and guidance to warranty providers, builders, consumers and other regulatory bodies about the application of those provisions. Every new home built for sale by a licensed residential builder in British Columbia is protected by mandatory third-party home warranty insurance. Better known as 2-510 home warranty insurance, this coverage includes: two years on labour and materials, five years on the building envelope (including water penetration), and 10 years on the structure. It’s the strongest system of construction defect insurance in Canada. Acheson noted that for homes built by licensed residential builders, the New

Homes Registry displays the name and contact number of the warranty provider, and the builder’s warranty number – helpful information for new homebuyers. All homes registered with the HPO on or after November 19, 2007 are searchable on the New Homes Registry. This includes both single detached homes and multi-unit homes, including duplexes. For residential builder and home warranty information on a home registered between July 1, 1999 and November 19, 2007, or if a property cannot be found on the registry, contact the HPO at 1-800-407-7757. Consumers, realtors and others can also contact the HPO for more information about homes flagged as being “under investigation” on the registry.

For free access to the New Homes Registry, visit the Homebuyers section of the HPO website at www.hpo.bc.ca.

REALTOR What Tracey’s Clients Have to Say My family has bought and sold a fair amount of real estate over the years, no other realtors we worked with really stood out, until we purchased a property listed by Tracey Bosch. On the day this particular property closed, an issue occurred which should have been dealt with by our realtor. After several phone calls to our realtor to no avail, I contacted Tracey’s office, within minutes of leaving a message he returned my call and was able to resolve the issue immediately, this experience was so impressive, that 5 years later we chose Tracey to represent us in selling the same property. Tracey is a realtor who truly respects his client’s interest, he will not encourage you to settle on an offer you are unwilling to accept, because of his patience, an offer was presented to us which exceeded our expectations. When you choose Tracey, you not only get his expertise and professionalism, you also have the added benefit of work with his assistant Leeanne, who is always available to provide exemplary service with a friendly attitude. Tracey Bosch is the standard of excellence for realtors, and we were very privileged to work with him. Darlene Chow Your sign says “Building clients for Life” ...and clearly that’s what you do! Thank you so much for all the work you put in to selling our home. From our initial meeting to an accepted offer, we couldn’t have asked for more. You helped us every step of the way and paid attention to the details we may have overlooked. You assistance too a good deal of pressure off us during a very busy time. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend you and your team to anyone looking to sell. Chad & Michele B “We thank you for the assistance in getting the condo marketable and for expediting a quick sale with a solid price in a challenging market. I enjoyed working with you and your staff. I thank you for taking the time to explain the market and process over and over! Your sense of humour and patience were welcomed.” - Wendy Porter The service was great, everything happened so fast. Tracey was accessible at all times. The advertising in my case got prompt responses. Tracey has insight into who is looking for property and is able to match and seal a deal quickly. I have already recommended Tracey to several friends. Eve Jurovich
