Celebrating the past with a new twist May Day picnic born out of city council’s decision to cancel traditional Lancers’ dance By Theresa McManus

tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca

May Day is returning to its roots at this weekend’s community heritage picnic. Royal City residents are set to celebrate the 145-year-old history and traditions of May Day, which was first held on the city’s cricket green on May 4, 1870.The first May Day featured games, music, dancing and a picnic. “They gathered on the green, had a picnic, and came together in a cheery manner,” said Karen Baker-MacGrotty, one of the organizers of this year’s picnic. “Over the years, it’s been cheery and it’s been fun. They say May Day brings out the children in all of us, so that’s what we are trying to recreate – that happy, wonderful, lighthearted sense of community.” School kids will gather in Queen’s Park Stadium of the annual May Day celebrations on May 20, but residents of all ages are invited to attend a new community heritage picCELEBRATING MAY DAY Claire Haffner, 2015 May Queen, and Colburn Connelly, Royal Knight, front, and David MacGrotty, Karen Baker-MacGrotty nic that’s taking place on Sunday, May and Sandra Sontowski, the city’s 1954 May Queen, will be among the folks attending the New Westminster community heritage picnic on Sunday. City steamed about new coal plan

New proposal to load coal directly onto ocean-going vessels could have ‘an even greater impact’ on NewWestminster By Theresa McManus

tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca

New Westminster city council fears a new proposal for Fraser Surrey Docks could lead to a full-blown coal terminal across from Westminster Quay and Queensborough. Fraser Surrey Docks has contacted Port Metro Vancouver about changing the direct

transfer coal facility project permit that was approved last August. The amendment would allow Fraser Surrey Docks to load coal directly from the facility onto ocean-going vessels, rather than onto barges that would transport the U.S. coal to Texada Island before it’s shipped to Asia. According to Fraser Surrey Docks, the proposed amendment would have no im-

Because the coal could be loaded directly onto oceangoing vessels, the company states that the proposal would eliminate or reduce the number of barges required at Fraser Surrey Docks. Despite assurances from Fraser Surrey Docks that the amendment under consideration would have no impact on the volume of coal Fraser Surrey Docks would be able to ship with its existing permit, Coun. Chuck Puchmayr fears the new propos-

Local residents will get a chance to step inside the Charles Erickson House on Alberta Street later this month as part of the 36th annual Heritage Homes Tour. Some may recognize the century-old home from the TV series Love It or List It Vancouver, which pegged owners Danielle Connelly and her husband,Trevor, against each other in an episode last year. She wanted to sell, while he wanted to stay. “It gets overwhelming at a certain point when you think about all the work that needs to be done,” Connelly said about her desire to move. “We talked about doing this main floor renovation, but you have kids, and your budget is limited. The reality is it could take many hours, and living in that chaos is disruptive for everybody.” The couple, who are parents to two young boys, decided to stay in the end, after the big reveal. What once was a box-like floor plan with a lot of “wasted space” is now a functional family home. “It really was love at first sight. It was beautiful,” Connelly told the Record. The show’s design team tore down a lot of the walls

on the main floor, creating an open kitchen area with a pantry, a laundry room and a brand new bathroom (complete with its own chandelier). The colour scheme changed from dark and dull to bright and beach-like. Designer and former Bachelorette star Jillian Harris (a.k.a Team Love It) used most of the furniture and trinkets the family already had. She created a photo collage on the wall in the dining area and also reupholstered an old Morris chair Connelly’s late father never got around to finishing. “It’s Trevor’s favourite spot to sit.You can usually catch him in there with a book and a cup of tea,” she added. Harris also installed a stained-glass window that a

family friend had made in memory of Connelly’s dad. The piece was created from glass scraps her father used while dabbling in the art form himself. “Sometimes tying it all together is hard, but they really managed to do it,” she said. The show granted a few more wishes, including a new fireplace and incorporating the family’s wooden piano into the living room. Connelly said she was also thrilled to see the industrial looking light fixtures in the kitchen, fashioned to a pulley that can be raised if they want to use the space for other activities. Other personal touches include building the dining room table out of wood salvaged from a silo in Chilliwack, the city Connelly’s father was based in

while in the military. The upstairs (which contains three large bedrooms) and an attic were also repurposed. Connelly explained they now use the latter as a play area and an office. The house isn’t all contemporary and modern, however; it still has a heritage feel to it, with its creaky floors, irregular roofline and wraparound porch. Built in 1912, the home was originally owned by Charles William Erickson, a millwright at the nearby Fraser Mills. Like many other homes of the day, the property at one point became a boarding house with two entrances. “We take a lot of pride in the history. It’s always going to be there,” she said. “It’s nice we could make it into something we wanted.” Charles Erickson House, located at 347 Alberta St., is one of 14 venues featured in the 36th annual Heritage Homes Tour and Tea on May 31.Tickets cost $40 and can be picked up at Champagne Taste, New Westminster Museum and Archives at Anvil Centre, Cadeaux Gifts and Home Embellishments, Royal City Colours and Mandeville GardenWorks. A $1,000 fine and a 20-month driving prohibition – that’s the sentence a 47-year-old Burnaby man was given for his role in a fatal crash in 2011 in New Westminster. The Burnaby resident, who was in court last Wednesday afternoon for his sentencing hearing, pled guilty to one count of driving without due care and attention, a charge under the Motor Vehicle Act. The charge stems from a collision that happened on April 19, 2011, when the cement truck Mohammad Abdolmalekpoor was driving ran a red light at Holmes Street and East Columbia, striking a compact car travelling east on Columbia Street, sending it through the cement barrier at the bottom of Holmes Street and into Hume Park below. The driver, 26-year-old Mark Holmes, died at the scene. Tracy Demears, Holmes’ mother-in-law, attended the sentencing hearing with her daughter Kim, Holmes’ sister-in-law. After the sentence was announced, she told the Record she wasn’t surprised. “The prosecutor dropped the ball,” she said. “It was like postponement after postponement, that’s why he’s pleaded out, it’s got nothing to do with him coming forward and saying, ‘Yes, I’m guilty.’” Demears worked with Holmes at Accurate Lock, Safe & Alarm Co. in New Westminster. On the day of

the crash, Holmes dropped her off at work before heading home to Coquitlam to pick up his wife and infant son for a doctor’s appointment. Demears told the Record she often replays that day over and over in her head, wondering if Holmes would still be alive had she done something differently. “You spend all day wondering, ‘What if I kept him there five more seconds? What if somebody downstairs wanted him?’ Or you know, just, ‘What if?’” she said. Holmes’ wife Jennifer and their son Jackson, who is four years old now, live in Maple Ridge. Demears said the experience will live with the family forever. “It never goes away.Your life is forever changed, forever changed. Jackson’s going to grow and we can tell him that we fought for his dad but the justice system let him down,” she said. In a victim impact statement submitted by Holmes’ mother and four siblings, the 26-year-old was described as a happy, caring, smart young man. “(Mark) was quick with a smile and even quicker to make someone else smile,” read the statement. The statement noted that everyone in the family has been traumatized by the experience and it has left a melancholy cloud over them all. “None of us will ever be truly happy again, how could we?” In 2012, following an indepth investigation by New continued on page 9

City Beat Coal facility is ‘ludicrous’ in Metro area

Continued from page 1 to create a full-fledged thermal coal export facility right in the absolute heart of Metro Vancouver.” Last Monday, council approved a motion to continue to oppose the Fraser Surrey Docks coal export facility and to voice concerns about the lack of public health analysis, a scientific environmental analysis and an analysis of the global impacts of greenhouses gases associated with the export of thermal coal from Fraser Surrey Docks. If the plan goes ahead, Puchmayr believes Fraser Surrey Docks would become a full-fledged coal terminal because “there’s no ability” for local governments or the public to restrict the volumes. “They have the ability to do whatever they please,” he said. “If suddenly they decided they wanted to load barges and send them to Texada, we have no input on that whatsoever. Neither does Metro Vancouver, neither do local governments. They can set the bench-

marks and the rules.” Along with New Westminster city council and environmental groups, many residents expressed concern about the environmental and health impacts associated with a coal facility at Fraser Surrey Docks. Puchmayr is a member of the Safe Energy Leadership Alliance, which includes elected officials from Washington State, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, California and British Columbia seeking to raise awareness about the safety risks of oil and coal transportation. “We received huge support from elected officials south of the border opposing the Fraser Surrey Dock facility and lodging a concern with Metro Vancouver about the export facility, the air quality issues and the wastewater issues. We are getting huge support from our American friends down there,” Puchmayr said. “This affects them as well. The volume of those trains running through their communities to bring dirty American coal to Canada

No support: Coun. Chuck Puchmayr fears a new coal plan for Fraser Surrey Docks could lead to the creation of a full-fledged port terminal across the river from Westminster Quay. The city is opposing FSD’s proposal to load coal onto ocean-going vessels at its terminal.

is just as impacting as it is to us.” Puchmayr said it’s “ludicrous” that Port Metro Vancouver is allowing a facility for American thermal coal to be located in the heart of the Greater Vancouver Regional District. “We are asking the general public to comment as well,” Puchmayr said.

“I want residents to know where to send their comments to and to oppose this in the most extreme manner.” Kevin Washbrook, a director with Voters Taking Action on Climate Change, said the plan is shifting from being a coal transfer facility to a full-on coal port on the Fraser River, a short

distance from homes and across the river from downtown New Westminster. The group believes the proposal to load ocean-going vessels in Surrey raises questions about the stockpiling of coal on the site and an increase of U.S. coal travelling through Metro Vancouver by train. Voters Taking Action on

Climate Change said it never had any confidence that Fraser Surrey Docks or Port Metro Vancouver had a solid plan for monitoring or managing coal dust and coal waste water losses from barges in the Strait of Georgia and the Fraser, or for safely storing loaded barges of self-combusting coal in municipalities.

Nothing funny about this ‘prank’

We all know the Internet is a place that breeds bad behaviour. So perhaps it’s no surprise that a vile “comedy” routine of shouting a sexist, degrading phrase at female reporters while they are live on air has been spread there. This week, the tide turned when reporter

Shauna Hunt confronted a group of these MENSA candidates as they taunted her. Cameras rolling, Hunt told them how disrespectful and demeaning it was. Then she posted it on social media. Consequences for the now-outed Neanderthals have been swift. One highly paid man-

ager lost his job, which we applaud mainly because it spares his female co-workers from having to share a workspace with his knuckle-dragging misogyny. Good on Hunt for doing something to make this behaviour stop. It’s a sad reflection on society that grown men feel they can act this way

... better yet, put on your big boy pants ... in public with impunity. These “pranks” target women with sexual vulgarities as they try to do their jobs. The message is: “Your work doesn’t

matter.”The message is: “shut up.” When Hunt didn’t turn the cameras off, the men behind this stunt got a lesson that should be obvious to anyone over the age of 10: if you’re tempted to say something you wouldn’t want your boss or mother to hear, something that would out

you as a misogynist jerk, don’t say it when the TV cameras are rolling. Or better yet, put on your big boy pants, check your moral compass and don’t say it at all.

MY VIEW KEITH BALDREY

Uphill battle for new team Is the creation of a new “climate leadership team” a sign the B.C. Liberal government is renewing its interest in confronting the climate change issue? Or is this simply an exercise designed to fail? I suppose we may know the answer to these questions as early as July, when the new team is supposed to hand in a draft framework for a climate plan that seeks to reduce greenhouse emissions while at the same time expanding the economy, including creating a new liquefied natural gas industry. And pulling off those accomplishments simultaneously will be tricky, if not impossible. As such, it will be interesting to see if the three prominent environmental activists appointed to the new panel stick around to see things out. Veteran Greenpeace campaignerTzeporah Berman, the Pembina Institute’s Matt Horne and Merran Smith of Clean Energy Canada are all well known, and given their criticisms of natural resource industries in the past it’s hard to envision any of them agreeing with a plan that allows for a huge expansion of those industries. But the Christy Clark government is attached, both politically and economically, to establishing an LNG industry in this province. As this commitment went from what seemed like a pie-in-the-sky idea before the 2013 election to being

the centerpiece of the government’s economic strategy, critics began pointing out it would be impossible for the province to meet its committed targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 if LNG plants started being built. And even with the establishment of this new climate action team, those criticisms have gotten even louder. Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver, a climate scientist himself, says the government doesn’t need another panel to tell it how to meet its climate change goals. He has dismissed the latest one as a “credibility building exercise” for a government whose interest in battling climate change seems to have waned in recent years. So how will this new climate leadership team square this circle? Can it come up with a strategy that effectively reduces this province’s carbon footprint while at the same time accommodating a new resource industry like LNG? The odds seemed stacked against success on this one. I can’t see the Clark government backing away from its all-in approach to creating an LNG industry in this province. That’s the starting point for this new climate leadership team.Whether it can cross the finish line in harmony seems to be a monumental challenge. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

Urban Academy issue raises questions

Will family-friendly housing laws work?

Dear Editor What can we learn from the Urban Academy process and decision to deny their expansion plans at the Robson Manor site in New Westminster? There are a number of things: Democracy is alive and well in New Westminster. Oh it’s not perfect. Churchill’s well known quote applies: “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.” But the fact remains: opinions can be voiced and be heard and acted upon without fear. We need to be very grateful for living in the democracy we do in New Westminster and Canada. In particular, while it’s fashionable to hate and despise politics and politicians, we should be very grateful to those who put themselves out there to do the work of politics. There’s something wrong in the development process in New Westminster. As part of a concerned group of residents who opposed the expansion plans you’d expect me to be basking in a well-fought and decisive victory: a unanimous vote against from the advisory planning Something ... commission; a 6-1 vote left me with an against by Westunsettled feeling New minster city council on May 4, 2015. Yes. And no no no. Something about the decision left me with an unsettled feeling about the process. So much capital was spent: thousands of hours of volunteer and professional time; many dollars – millions in the case of Urban Academy who purchased the adjacent apartment building; the intangible goodwill amongst neighbours and the community; the disruption and loss of ‘home’ for the eight apartment unit occupants during this drawn out process, etc. Just think about this: if early in the process, the applicant was made aware of the likelihood of an unsuccessful bid and instead was helped to find a site so they could build the right building in the right place? Maybe that happened. Maybe the applicant plowed ahead regardless, with a certain naiveté and hubris that they could beat the odds. Who knows? One thing I do know: We would be so much further ahead as a community if all that capital had been invested in the right building on the right-sized site in the right place. I trust that as the city debriefs this result they will get insight that will avoid most of this collateral fallout in the future. Urban Academy has much to teach us: about choice in education; about learning styles; about 21st-century educational facilities; the future of urban density. It would be a shame for that to be learned elsewhere. Maybe our city can credit them with some ‘development credits’? Maybe the city can proactively work with them to find a site where they can realize their vision? I certainly hope so. In the end this decision was not about the kind of education offered. It was not about private vs. public education. It was not even about the architecture. It was about land use. “It’s not personal. It’s land use” to adapt that Godfather line. As we know from our personal lives: we often learn the most from things that are not easy. So too here. I trust our community can learn from this process and bring good out of a difficult and hard time for us all. Mark Fox, New Westminster

MaryAnn Mortensen Thanks all. The Board has referred the issue to staff... again. True, we are a new Board as of Nov .14 but this is nothing new to the vast majority of folks in our district. Personally, I’d love to see a return of the hour long lunch, half hour for eating for those who need it, half hour in play but there are associated costs and logistics. I don’t expect to see much change in the feedback but all the support you can offer from speaking/ writing to your school’s PAC and to the board to support this change is appreciated. For now, it’s sitting in the cue for the third time in five years.

New Westminster RECORD WEDNESDAY May 20, 2015 9

News Accused pleads guilty to Motor Vehicle Act charge Continued from page 3 Westminster police, Abdolmalekpoor was charged with several motor vehicle infractions, including failing to ensure his vehicle was in safe operating condition; operating a vehicle without effective service brakes; driving without due care and attention; and driving without reasonable consideration, as well as dangerous driving causing death, a charge under the Criminal Act. Earlier this year, however, Crown counsel announced an agreement had been reached with the defence moving the case from the Supreme Court to Provincial Court as long as Abdolmalekpoor pled guilty to the charge of driving without due care and attention. LastWednesday, Crown and defence counsel presented a joint submission at the sentencing hearing. The submission noted Abdolmalekpoor had about two years’ experience driving a cement truck and nearly a

decade driving commercial vehicles. On the day of the crash, he was carrying wet cement from Burnaby to Coquitlam and was on his second trip when the truck collided with Holmes’ vehicle.

This is a one-off situation, and certainly out of character.

Crown counsel noted that instead of turning right onto McBride Boulevard and 10th Avenue, Abdolmalekpoor continued east on 10th Avenue, which past Road turns into Holmes Street. Holmes is a residential street with a steep grade, and it was concluded during the preliminary hearing that Abdolmalekpoor started his descent in too high of a gear to engage the air brakes,

causing them to fail and the truck to speed through the red light. But, Crown added, up until this point Abdolmalekpoor had a good driving record and was considered a good employee. “This is a one-off situation, and certainly out of character,” the defence added. “He ended up, as a result, with relatively serious physical problems and very serious mental health problems.” The presiding judge agreed, and told the court it was clear Abdolmalekpoor was remorseful. She also noted that Crown and defence counsel were right in submitting a sentence that would include a fine and a driving prohibition. “I realize it will be of no consolation to the family,” she noted in her report. Abdolmalekpoor is expected to pay the $1,000 fine over a six-month period.

A tribute to freedom: The Maple Leaf Singers bring Touch the Sky to the stage at the Massey Theatre for two shows, May 30 and 31. PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

Maple Leaf Singers come to Massey stage It’s a musical tribute to happiness, freedom and the exuberance of life. The Maple Leaf Singers are coming to Massey Theatre on May 30 and 31 for their spring performance, Touch the Sky. “We don’t put on a concert, we put on a show,” says musical director Wilson Fowlie in a press release. “We create beauty together – sometimes transcendent,

sometimes whimsical, but always beautiful. People who have seen us remark on our professional presentation, our energy and sense of fun. They leave a show feeling good, and that’s what we want.” Touch the Sky offers a range of music, pairing Elton John’s Crocodile Rock and The Lion King with the rhythm of Swing’s the Thing and Swingin’ with the

Saints. Audiences can enjoy the classic favourites My FavouriteThings, Simple Gifts and Zip-A-Dee-DooDah, along with the recent hit Happy – plus some Everly Brothers, We Need a Little Christmas (yes, even in May) and much more. The show includes original choreography and costumes, plus special solo, duet and quartet acts. The Maple Leaf Singers

are a long-standing group on the Vancouver choral scene. The group originated in 1968 with 24 members under the leadership of New Westminster couple George and Marie Gillis. In 2001, they handed the reins over to Fowlie, and this year, the group marks its 47th anniversary with 55 members singing six-part harmony. Members of the group

travel to Burnaby to rehearse from all parts of Metro Vancouver, from the North Shore to Surrey to Port Coquitlam. The choir performs more than a dozen shows a year at community centres, churches, seniors’ residences and a variety of special events.Ticket proceeds from Touch the Sky help to cover the costs of rehearsal locations, sound equipment,

musical scores and costumes. The show hits the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 30 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 31. General admission tickets are $20, or $10 for children 12 and under. See www.mapleleaf singers.com or contact the Massey box office at 604521-5050. twitter.com/juliemaclellan

BURLESQUE ONSTAGE IN CABARET SHOW The art of burlesque is coming to New West. The Damask Burlesk Troupe is bringing its Spectacular Cabaret to the Columbia Theatre on Friday, May 22. “Vancouver is home to one of the biggest hotbeds of the international rebirth of burlesque, but very few shows venture past Boundary Road,” a press release notes. “Spectacular Caba-

ret will bring elegance and grace laced with sass, combining everything from the rhinestone-dripping classic striptease of Diamond Minx to the side-splitting humour of the scenery-chewing and terribly verklempt Whashername.” You can also expect to enjoy performances from Viv Cliquot, Ariel Helvetica and Mr.Yoyothrower. “It will be a dynamic show that is sure to stun with its dazzling costumes,

New Westminster RECORD WEDNESDAY May 20, 2015 17

Your journey starts here.

Sharp Styling and Intelligent Tech BY DAVID CHAO

In recent years, Cadillac has raised its profile with edgy styling and surprisingly good performance. The sporty 2015 SRX enhances that appeal. Despite not seeing significant changes since this generation’s debut back in 2010, the SRX still matches up well against the best in the luxury crossover-SUV segment. Its main competitors are the Lexus RX, the BMW X3, and the Audi Q5 – which are all important rivals. The minor additions GM made this year include new colours and the 4G-LTE with built-in Wi-Fi hotspot capability on the OnStar system.

Design

Chiseled and athletic are the best words to describe the distinctive SRX. The angular lines give it a masculine feel. Even though the SRX is one of the most “dated” vehicles in Cadillac’s lineup, its styling holds up well and the car still looks fresh and exciting. The SRX’s look is epitomized by Cadillac’s wide shield grille, flanked by the now iconic vertical headlights. The wheels are pushed to the corners, resulting in a wide stance and short overhangs. Looking at the SRX from the side, your eye is drawn to the fender vents and prominent crease rising from the top of the front wheel to just below the rear window. The high beltline and rear slanted roof continue the aggressive look, but does limit outward visibility. Vertical taillights compliment the front and the twin tailpipes round out the package. A power liftgate is standard on all but the base model. The SRX’s cabin is still up-to-date and luxurious;

It should please any young executive, though the newer competitors are perhaps a bit more modern.

the cabin feel bright and airy. The 844-litre volume should be plenty for regular shopping trips, but the cargo space behind the folding and reclining rear seats is somewhat less than its rivals

Available in four trim levels, the SRX is offered with Luxury, Performance and Premium Collections.

Performance

All SRX models are powered by a direct-injected 3.6-litre V6 rated at 308 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. Lightweight materials were used to reduce overall weight for greater efficiency and a better front-to-rear balance. It is mated to a Hydra-Matic 6T70 six-speed automatic transmission, which features an ECO mode that alters the shift points to improve fuel economy. All-wheel drive is available with every model except the base model. The system incorporates an electronic limited-slip differential that increases traction in slippery conditions, while also providing side-to-side torque transfer across the rear axle to enhance control during hard cornering. Further aiding handling is the variable-effort, speedsensitive steering system. It is tuned with a sport-sedan style bias and gives good feedback without feeling too heavy. In fact, thanks to the traditional hydraulic steering mechanism, the SRX provides a sportier feel than many of its competitors, which have incorporated an electric steering system. The SRX is also available with Cadillac’s advanced safety systems. The most sophisticated of those features is frontal automatic braking. Using radar, camera and ultrasound technology, this system helps prevent low-speed collisions with alerts and the ability to brake completely, if necessary.

Environment

The SRX’s cabin is a blend of luxury and technology. The materials are rich, the wood accent trim feels authentic, and the overall look and feel is comfortable and contemporary. The front seats are well bolstered, yet roomy. However, the three-passenger rear seat can be a little tight for taller adults, partly due to the SRX’s low roof. The UltraView power sunroof goes a long way to making

The foundation of the SRX’s interior is its infotainment system. The Cadillac User Experience (CUE) is complimented by Bluetooth audio streaming, and USB and SD connection. You interact with the system through a touch-sensitive eight-inch display. The large easy-to-target buttons and Haptic feedback create a comfortable experience, although it is not the most user-friendly unfortunately (like most touch controls lately). To make the driving experience more enjoyable, the SRX offers active noise cancellation. Using microphones to monitor ambient noise, a computer plays counteracting frequencies through the audio system to quiet the cabin.

Features

The 2015 SRX ranges in price from $42,930 to 58,205. Standard equipment includes heated front seats, automatic dual-zone climate control, heated exterior mirrors, keyless entry system, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity. Additional features, available as options or on higher trims, include ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot warning, front and rear park assist, rearview camera, auto-dimming mirrors, auto windshield wipers, and remote start. Fuel efficiency numbers (L/100km) for front-wheel drive models are 14.2 city, 9.6 highway, and 12.3 combined. All-wheel drive models return 14.8 city, 10.4 highway, and 12.8 combined.

Thumbs Up

The SRX has dated well, with great styling and surprisingly good steering feel.

Thumbs Down

The car is beginning to feel outdated against other vehicles in this class. Also, several rivals offer diesel or hybrid powertrains that are more fuel efficient.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a five-passenger luxury crossover with bold styling and high-tech infotainment, be sure to check out the Cadillac SRX.

Built in 1893 by Joseph and Mary Marshall, this Victorian Pioneer Tent style house is perhaps the oldest surviving home in the West End. It was a typical home for a working class family – three small bedrooms on the second floor; kitchen (relocated to an addition in 1996), living and dining area with coffered ceilings on the main floor. This house is a unique West End gem that has survived years of wear and tear until the current owner lovingly created a workable flow throughout, incorporating modern features while respecting period detail.

Built by the Lane Brothers (William and Robert) for Frederick and Fannie Hume, this handsome house pays homage to Dutch Colonial and eclectic Eastern Cottage styles. The current owners bought this Moody Park property in 2004. They gutted the main floor to restore the original layout of the principal rooms; and merged the back porch, small kitchen and separate dining room into a bright, airy large kitchen that’s the perfect gathering place for parties. A new, convenient powder room is conveniently located by the back door.

This charming bungalow was designed by architect James Boulton Whitburn for fellow Scotsman, John Murdoch McLean — and thought to be a deal between two thrifty Scotsmen. With its 10 foot ceilings, this sturdy home has the appearance of a cottage with some elements of the Prairie Style, with a hipped roof and Craftsman details that include a full-width porch and solid squared columns. In 2006, the new owners’ desire to keep McLean House as a beloved family home won out over other, higher bidders who had plans for demolition.

10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Irving House is the oldest intact house in the Lower Mainland. It is still on its original site. Contrary to the legends, Captain William Irving’s family home was neither constructed by the Royal Engineers, nor built in 1862-64. Rather, it was designed and built by T. W. Graham in 1865 - for a cost of $10,000. Now owned by the City and operated by the New Westminster Museum and Archives, ongoing study and accurate restoration processes continue to accurately restore Irving House to the glory of a bygone age. Once part of the grounds of Columbian Methodist College at the corner of Queen’s Avenue and First Street, this property was purchased and built upon by Victor and Nettie Brachat in 1939. The new owners purchased the house from the Brachat family in 1999, embarking on a major renovation three years later. An extended roofline at the front improved the overall look of the house and gave the family a wonderful front porch to enjoy; while a new kitchen and an enviable mudroom addition blend old with new.

909 Dublin Street The John Murdoch McLean House (1912) SPONSORED ON BEHALF OF:

Edwin L. Johnston and his wife Evelyn built this western gothic style (eclectic period) house in 1939-1940. The vaulted ceiling in the kitchen emerged during a renovation when the current owner came home to find the kitchen ceiling caving in, exposing the high rafters above. So charmed by the ‘openness’, he asked the builder to replicate the rafters just one foot below, resulting in a rustic cottage look. To the current owners’ bemusement, the first owners planted a favourite car in the garden – parts of which still surface periodically.

This Craftsman-style house was built in 1894 by Jonas Johnson — a fireman with the steamboat Samson – and his wife Matilda. The current owners purchased the house in 2003 and it first appeared on the Homes Tour in 2005. Now, ten years later, the kitchen and the renovated family room are show-stoppers – the gorgeous view of the garden is their focal point. Much of the back wall was extended to accommodate the generous window seat and a stunning bank of wood-framed windows made with traditional mullion and sash details.

The style of this house (built by Guy and Ethel Simpson) is indeed eclectic, with elements of the late Victorian period, including irregular roof lines. There are some unique, romantic English Cottage details such as the leaded glass bay windows. When this house sold in 2013, and construction fencing was erected, neighbours were convinced the lovely cottage was facing demolition. Instead, the owners worked with their architect and contractor to gently let their house out at the seams, respectfully enhancing the existing floorplan, while maximizing function and space.

This historic timber frame church boasts gothic-arched windows designed by architect J.C. White, formerly a Lieutenant with the Royal Engineers; and built in 1865 by ex-sappers. The clear cedar paneling on the walls and the open rafters above are strikingly evocative of its pioneer origins. Despite extensive building changes and two fires, St. Mary’s is still the charming country church that local dignitaries and common folk alike have flocked to over the past 150 years.

It’s taken 17 years, but this Edwardianstyle house is finally returning to the Homes Tour! The current owners have been in the house for a year and have added their own touches to this beautifully updated century-plus home. The solid fir front door has been refinished. A stained glass panel made by the owners’ 90-year old uncle fills the foyer with light. The handsome newel post leads up the U-turn stairway to the second floor to a home office that feels like a treehouse overlooking a row of heritage chestnut trees. SPONSORED BY: CHAMPAGNE TASTE HOME CONSIGNMENT

This Craftsman-style home was built in 1912 by James C. Walmsley. The prominent New Westminster family had a street named after them in the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood. Originally an unimposing residence on a large lot, the previous owners undertook a major renovation in 2007, when they raised, re-positioned and enlarged it. The kitchen renovation and the addition of the large family room are excellent examples of how modern conveniences can be incorporated into a home without compromising the appearance or ambiance of its century-plus heritage. SPONSORED BY: BASIL RESTORATION LTD.

The Erickson house is an interesting mix of late Victorian influences and Craftsman elements. Its irregular roofline, bay windows, patterned shingles and wraparound porch speak to a builder who wanted to experiment with styles. The current owners took the house on as a renovation project, eventually enlisting the help of the popular TV show, Love It or List It Vancouver – and they decided to love it! Christine N Stover

Christine is the founder and co-creator of the Goddess Within You (GWY).

One by one, Christine Stover is helping women in New Westminster discover the deity within them - that divine feminine nature that lives within each one of us, yet through life’s sometimes difficult journey, gets forgotten.

“GWY is about having each individual rediscover their unique power,” she explains. “Having each person falling in love with themselves again. Self love is a key aspect to our business and getting back the self esteem, self confidence and balancing our body, mind, spirit and heart.”

Founder & Co-Creator, Goddess Within You

In February, 2012, Christine was volunteering her time helping women discover their inner beauty. Soon, the media got wind of her unique approach. That coupled with an overwhelmingly positive response from locals’ drove the birth of GWY in October 2012.

and in the fall will be offering programs for youth ages 13-18, and also younger children from 3-5 years of age.”

Christine’s background is in the mining industry as an executive assistant, converting private companies to public entities. She holds a business certificate from SFU Public Companies: Financing, Governance & Compliance. She left her career to pursue and fulfill her passion and purpose and went on to earning diplomas in Child and Youth Care as well as Community Support Worker. In addition, she has completed numerous courses and workshops in leadership and self development.

This unique program is where women empower each other; a space where everyone can drop their masks and let the beauty of their authentic face be seen in its totality. Courses cater to the needs of each individual, group or organization through authenticity, awareness and intuition.

It doesn’t stop there. Her business is also thriving in the education sector. In only three years, Goddess Within You has expanded its programs in seven schools in New Westminster, four in Burnaby and has plans to spread out into Vancouver, Coquitlam and Surrey in the very near future. “We started by offering workshops for women and girls only and now offer workshops for boys (with men in the near future),” she adds. “We presently offer programs to children ages 8-12

“There’s no one else like us, and people have responded so positively to that. The referrals from previous clients are huge – and we have clients who have come back several times for subsequent sales,” she adds.

When the market slowed down nearly to a halt back in 2008, this savvy businesswoman used the time to transform and revolutionize her approach to the business. “That was the beginning and it was wonderful to have some time to sit down and really rethink what I did,

What makes her team stand above the rest, she says, is a marketing approach that is focused, intelligent and direct. Darcy’s professional real estate services include a detailed demographic analysis of the neighbourhood and uncompromising marketing plan to ensure her clients

get the highest level of representation and guidance. In addition, each team member guarantees that everything – from staging to photos to open houses – is done with the utmost professionalism. Switching a story’s perspective to the villain’s point of view can make for a great read and a fun writing experiment. These stories often work well with an iconic villain from popular culture – someone whose overly active dark side has long been taken for granted. Visit the New Westminster Public Library for these, and other, titles that show a different side to some of fiction’s most notorious baddies. One of the more wellknown novels of this type is Gregory Maguire’s Wicked: The Life andTimes of the WickedWitch of theWest. The book revisits the land of Oz and tells the story from the perspective of Elphaba, a misunderstood and greenskinned young woman who

turns out to be more of a political activist than an evil sorceress. Readers who have already enjoyed Wicked might also want to read these sequels: Son of aWitch, A Lion Among Men, and Out of Oz.

Villain’s point of view can make for a great read. For an alternative reading on the story of Peter Pan, give Alias Hook a try. Lisa Jensen’s take on Captain Hook recasts him as a misunderstood man who is cursed to forever fight against Pan and his allies, in Neverland’s magical and eternal war. Fans of Sherlock Holmes will enjoy John Gardner’s

Moriarty. Rather than recreate the infamous criminal mastermind as a misunderstood hero, Gardner creates a story in which Moriarty is a complex anti-hero who must defend his empire against rival criminals. In Daniel Levine’s Hyde, Dr. Jekyll’s alter ego gets to tell his side of the story. From within the body he shares and only sometimes controls, Hyde struggles to understand what is happening to him, and whether he’s a murderous criminal or a framed scapegoat – or something else entirely. If you’d rather revisit villainy through short fiction instead, try The Mad Scientist’s Guide toWorld Domination. Edited by John Joseph Adams, this collection has over twenty stories told from the perspectives of all sorts of scoundrels.

An up-and-coming singer, a frequent headliner at Lafflines Comedy Club and the host of MTV’s Disaster Date will be in town to raise funds for FSH Muscular Dystrophy. #StandUp4FSHD, a night of comedy to raise money for FSH Muscular Dystrophy, is being held at the Columbia Theatre on Saturday, May 30.The event starts at 7 p.m. with 16-year-old singer/pianist Ben Dunnill from White Rock, followed by Vancouver’s Jared Borland, a frequent headliner at Lafflines and host of Comedy on the Corner at the Corner in Vancouver. Rounding out the night is K-Von, an American-Iranian comedian and host of MTV’s Disaster Date. New Westminster resident and CBC reporter Belle Puri will be hosting the event.” “Last year’s event was a rousing success,” said Neil Camarta, founder and CEO of FSHD Canada. “We have used funds from this event and other grassroots fundraisers like this to partner with world-class organizations leading the way for treatment and therapeutics specifically for FSH Muscular Dystrophy.” Net proceeds from the event will go to fund research for FSH Muscular Dystrophy through FSHD Canada, a non-profit orga-

nization dedicated to fund research targeted specifically to FSH Muscular Dystrophy, the most preventable of the nine muscular dystrophies. According to organizers, FSH Muscular Dystrophy (or FSHD) is a muscle-wasting disease that primarily affects the facial, shoulder and upper arm muscles, as well as other parts of the bodies. People who have this genetic condition don’t know when or how severely muscle loss will take place and no treatment currently exists for this condition. Doors open at 6 p.m. for #StandUp4FSHD and the show begins at 7 p.m. An onsite raffle will include a signed jersey donated by the Whitecaps and a photo session donated by Wendy D Photography.Tickets are $20 (plus tax and service charge) and available at www.thecolumbia.ca. Many eyelid growths are benign and not a concern, but there are some growths that can be cancerous and/

or sight threatening. Your doctor will assess the pigmentation, size, symmetry, and other aspects of the growth using special equipment. Even benign growths should be properly documented and examined by a professional. Also of interest, many people have “freckles” that can occur inside the eye, commonly on the iris or retina. Often times you cannot see these pigmented spots yourself but they will be detected during an eye examination. Your Doctor of Optometry will document and photograph these spots to monitor for any changes. For more information or to book an appointment call 604-522-6929.

ASK A DESIGNER

Q. A. Michelle Bernier

What should I look for when I buying Blinds, Shades and Shutters?

Today, with so many styles of blinds and shades to choose from, finding the right one for your needs can be daunting. Whether you’re looking for privacy, style, or both, it can be an overwhelming decision. Windows are a great focal point in a room and blinds and shades should be both decorative and functional. They can be used with drapery for a finished look or are their own for a modern look. Either way they protect your furnishings and flooring from sun damage and keep you cooler. Here’s what to consider before you buy to keep from getting “blindsided”. First Things First…. • Light and privacy How much do you want and need? Is your goal to block out light for sleep in the bedroom? Are the windows facing north or a sunny south side of the house? How high are your windows? All of these factors and more will influence the styles, fabrics and blind options you choose.

• Your budget Are you outfitting just one window or the entire house? The home will look great if you are consistent throughout the space but certain custom options may be better suited for select windows only due to specific needs for that room. We consider each room’s needs and purpose when selecting window coverings. • Cleaning Some are easy to clean with a damp cloth and some types of blinds hide soil better and best cared for by vacuuming. Choose wisely! • Your decorating style Is it formal or casual, comfortable or chic? Bold colors can be fun or dramatic. Subtle hues and textures are perfect for a room decorated in neutral colors. • Safety Do you have young children or pets in your household and need cordless blinds and shades? Would high windows benefit from a motorized system? Thankfully, at Design With Confidence, we do windows! Our professional and experienced blind installers will find the perfect blind or shade for your home and within your budget for a beautiful, comfortable and stylish look for your windows that will keep you cool in the summer and warmer in the winter. Call us to book your appointment! 30% off of sun shades for May !

ASK A REALTOR

Q.

Is your Esthetician or Nail Technician certified to perform the treatments they offer? Since the 1920s, people who wanted to be estheticians, nail technicians, hairdressers, or work in a spa had to go to an accredited school to get trained and get a licence from a provincial body. Inspectors challenged their credentials and those who did not meet standards were subject to fines or even getting their licence revoked. You couldn’t even own a spa or salon unless you were a licensed professional. In 2003, when the British Columbia government deregulated the beauty spa industry to save money and to create more jobs and a healthy competition and labeled the beauty industry as a “Voluntary Trade” anyone can now open a beauty salon or spa offering a range of services performed by people with little to no education (sorry watching a few YouTube videos doesn’t make you qualified to do lash extensions) or qualifications creating fierce competition and pricing undercuts… Very Scary thought! Being able to perform cosmetology or beauty services without a license is a scary and dangerous trend, not to mention an insult to cosmetologists, estheticians and nail technicians nationwide who have poured their time, money and energy into training for all the complex concepts that are required to get a cosmetology, esthetics or nail technician license. Do you think just anyone off of the street is going to walk into a salon already knowing the ins and outs of physiology of the skin and the requirements for safety and sanitation? I don’t think so. We’ve been hearing it in the news lately about unlicensed Dentists operating their practice in their homes and the BC Dentist Association is in an uproar. Yet, in a Spa/Salon we use hot wax, 30% acid peels, use lasers, use electrical devices to rejuvenate the skin and nobody bats an eye. If the government won’t listen to us the certified professionals, perhaps they will listen to consumers. I feel the need to educated you the consumer and let you know that our industry is DE-regulated, jeopardizing your health and safety! De-regulation means no education or sanitation standards, UN-licensed technicians performing some of the most intimate personal services such as Bikini Waxing has increased the reports of infection and injury and lawsuits. Please speak up and talk to your Certified Cosmetologist, Esthetician and Nail Technician, local politicians, Beauty Council and ESPABC Association.

On my resume, should I list my hobbies? If you are struggling to fill one page with resume material, you may add hobbies as filler; however,

ensure you list hobbies that are relevant to the position. Envision an applicant applying for an administration position.

Neely Hazell

The employer is going to be looking for someone organized and detail oriented with good communication skills and

professional presentation. If this applicant were to state they enjoyed sky diving, mud wrestling, dressing up like a Game of Thrones character, and laser tag, not only are these hobbies irrelevant but they paint a picture of someone who would not likely enjoy a professional, sedentary desk job where they are to present well on a day to day basis. Get the point? So, if you must state hobbies, make them relevant. If you are applying for an administration job, list hobbies such as organizing, writing, and attending networking Meetup groups, for example. And, if you have enough content to fill one to two pages of a resume, leave the hobbies off all together. Q. A.

Q.

WHY DOES OUR SKIN LOSE ELASTICITY AND START TO SAG?

Our skin is tightened by a structure of collagen fibres in the dermis in a network of skin cells, fibres and blood capillaries. Below in the hypo-dermis or subcutaneous layer there is supporting fat tissue with strong and elastic collagen fibres, and the circulatory system. As we age the collagen fibres break down and become less structured and elastic, and our repair and replacement of these becomes less efficient. External factors such as UV exposure and lifestyle can make this worse. This results in wrinkles and the changes in the deeper tissue lead to sagging often known as skin laxity.

Katie Marshall

In body areas, changes in and around fat cells in the hypodermis, where the supporting collagen fibres and circulatory system become impaired, lead to them becoming less compact and structured causing a raised and dimpled appearance of the skin, a problem known as cellulite. Even with a healthy lifestyle and minimal sun exposure, our skin gradually loses its firm, youthful look. Aging, cumulative sun exposure, multiple pregnancies, and weight fluctuation are all factors which affect the strength and elasticity of the collagen fibers in our skin. This, in turn, causes the wrinkles and sagging skin.

ASK A JOB SEARCH EXPERT

ASK A VETERINARIAN

First of all, there are no set A. commissions in British Columbia.

Derrick Thornhill 604.525.1005

Can I use my consumer made wine or beer at my wedding?

ASK AN ESTHETICIAN

Can you explain why realtors have this weird 7% + 2.5% commission structure?

All commissions are completely negotiable between the seller and their Derrick Thornhill hard working realtor. However, like Park Georgia Realty most realtors, I too used this archaic commission model that someone created in the 70’s. My best guess is that very few homes in Vancouver sold for more than $100,000.00 at the time. Today, we are dealing with homes often over a million dollars. I converted to a simple fair flat commission structure not so long ago. My clients no longer have to pull out a calculator to figure out what I am charging.

Q. A.

Until the BC Liquor Act and regulations were changed in June 2014, it was illegal to serve consumer made wines, ciders and beers at any liquor licensed event or premises. However, the recent changes to the laws mean that it is now legal to make and use your own wines, beers and ciders at Family Harm Woldring Events by applying for and obtaining a Family Event - Special Occasion License (SOL). Events that qualify include weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, christenings, bar mitzvahs and other predominantly family oriented events. A license is required if your event is held in a public facility; like a hall or church, but not if the event is in a private residence. (Consumer made products still cannot be served or sold at any other licensed events or premises.) To apply for the Family Class of Special Occasion License the event must be private, for invited guests only and the event must be intended to celebrate a typical family celebration. Preparing for the event requires some longer term planning because it takes time to both make the products and apply for the license. You also need to consider how much you will need and what the right mix is for your special occasion. The Wine Factory has been helping families make their own wines for 21 years and we are excited to help you plan and make your own wine for your next event. Come see us to learn more about making your next family event a success.

New Westminster will be a favourite to repeat as the girls’ overall aggregate champion at the upcoming B.C. high school track and field championships this year. Raquel Tjernagel is raceready in the sprints, while defending multi-events champion Nina Schultz is poised again to compete for the most outstanding athlete. Tjernagel, who recently ran the fastest time of any North American high schooler to date, qualified in the 100m in 11.50 and the 200m in 23.78 at the BNW/Richmond zone qualifying meet last week. Schultz will compete in

the high jump and long and triple jumps, as well as the girls’ heptathlon. Schultz qualified in the high jump with a solid leap of 1.7m. She also leapt more than 11 metres in the triple jump. New West’s Shea Jobson-Stier will race the 3,000m and 2,000m boys’ steeplechase. Last year, NWSS won both the overall and girls’ aggregate banners for the first time ever at the provincial high school championships. Burnaby Central’s Nathan Mah will lead a strong complement of Burnaby athletes to the championships in Langley in June. Mah won all three boys’ sprint events, including a sub-11-second 100 metres,

at Central track on Tuesday. He also placed first in the 200m in a time of 22.31 and in the 400m in 53 seconds flat. Central also qualified Marco Sherwood in the long jump and Michael Fischer in the shot put. Racquel Milosavljevic made it through in the girls’ 100 and 200m for Central. Moscrop’sYousif Masoud also qualified in the boys’ 400m.West Burnaby teammate Jonathan Hanam will compete in the 800m, while Fidel Hodge made it in the triple jump. Byrne Creek had two boys qualify – Abdul Bangura in the 200m and Werd Khader in the 1,500m. Kimberly Ma also qualified in the girls’ 100m

hurdles for Byrne Creek. Burnaby Mountain have a pair of girls seeing double duty at the provincials. Robyn Lee qualified in both the 800 and 1,500m, while Lauren Watson will compete in the discus and javelin. Burnaby North twins Allyson and Christina Dickson both earned entries in the 400m. Christina will also compete at 800m. Jennifer Shannon will compete for Burnaby South in both the 1,500m and steeplechase. Junior provincial track qualifiers also included: Emily Chilton, Grace Fetherstonhaugh, Devin Strome, Sarah Forgie and Briana Bates from New Continued on page 42

The New Westminster Salmonbellies are playoff ready this season. The Sr. A Salmonbellies are hankering at the bit to get themselves back into the Western Lacrosse Association final after three seasons on the outside looking in, including backto-back seasons in 2012 and ’13 when they didn’t make it to the post season at all. Those days are hopefully behind them and with plenty of new faces and a few older ones returning, head coach Steve Goodwin is feeling better about the club than he has in years. “I’m a believer in athletes who can run the floor and can contribute at both ends,” said Goodwin. “We’ve finally got to the point where we’re a lot deeper and almost every guy can play that role.” Along with a strong returning core, including former rookie of the year Logan Schuss, who is committed to all 18 games this season, New West is bolstered with a solid influx of new drafts as well as a handful of eastern imports, who are expected to make an immediate impact on the wood floor at Queen’s Park. Shane MacDonald and Patrick Miles both play with the Minnesota Swarm in the NLL and will bring plenty of firepower to the ’Bellies’ attack. Burlington, Ont. product Broedie Birkhof is expected to bring some toughness to the back end, while former St. Catharines, Ont. keeper and Vancouver Stealth backup, Eric Penney, will likely see plenty of floor time along with returning goalie Alexis Buque. New West also picked up plenty of speed, savvy and overall versatility in the draft with Luke Gillespie, the ’Bellies first-round pick of the draft.

Justin Goodwin and Cory Takahara should also prove valuable assests for New West going forward. Reid Reinholdt, who missed all of last season because of injury, will be a late returner because of school commitments, but is fit and ready to finally show off his first-round credentials. The Salmonbellies will also get back Ian Hawksbee, who had to sit out all last season because of work commitments. Along with top defender of the year Jeff Cornwall and Colton Clarke, New Westminster couldn’t be more ready to show its stuff to the Queen’s Park faithful. Also returning to Queen’s Park is 12-year veteran Shane Bennett. Goodwin says he’s a risk-taker and his team is going to follow along with that philosophy. “I think we have the best athletic club we’ve had since we started,” said Goodwin. And that hopefully will translate into a run-andgun style that will keep fans in their seats, he said. “We’re getting to the point we can do that,” Goodwin added. But Goodwin and company don’t expect it to be easy. Parity is likely to rule the WLA this season, he said, “But that’s good for lacrosse.” Goodwin fully expects Nanaimo and Maple Ridge, despite losing Curtis Dickson to Ontario’s Major League, to be improved this year, while Burnaby has built itself into a solid franchise through the past few seasons. “I want to win every game just like everyone else. … We expect to be a strong team this year, but until someone beats Victoria, I think Victoria is the team,” said Goodwin. New West opens its season in Langley on May 27, before hosting Coquitlam at home on Thursday, May 28 at 7:45 p.m.

HYACK FESTIVAL MAY 16-24, 2015

IN INEW WEST

Still all about community after 44 years

A lot has changed in New Westminster since the ’70s. The city has grown and boomed, technology and transportation have changed the way we live and travel, and fashions have certainly come and gone. But some things stand the test of time. Forty-four years after the Hyack Festival Assocation was born and it’s still all about community: celebrating community, fostering community and engaging community. In 1971, the work of putting on city events and festivals was given to the newly created Hyack Festival Association. One of its premier events, then and now, was the Hyack Festival itself, which has grown into a much-loved spring tradtion in the Royal City. The first festival was held in 1972 and, despite a small budget, it was deemed a great success. In the years since, it has grown from a small event to one that encompasses many days, and events as diverse as the annual antique fair, the Key West Ford Hyack International parade, the May Day celebrations, and a Show and Shine, to name just a few. The word Hyack translates to “hurry up” or “quick” in Chinook, an informal dialect that

combined aspects of English, French and local First Nations languages and was common in B.C., the Pacific Northwest and up to Alaska and the Yukon. The name, chosen in 1971, has stayed through the decades, now a common term for Royal City residents. The Hyack Festival is one of the city’s key community building events, providing entertainment and activities for residents but also drawing visitors from around the region. As well, with the New Westminster Ambassador program, local youth travel throughout B.C. and the Pacific Northwest represnting the city and the festival association at events and parades all over. In the past, these have included trips to Tacoma, Wenatchee, Leavenworth, Portland, Seattle, Issaquah, Cloverdale, Penticton, Nanaimo, White Rock, Port Moody, Coquitlam and Kamloops. Here at home, the ambassadors take part in Sapperton Days, the Uptown Street Fair, various event and location openings and 100th birthday celebrations. Each year, the Hyack Festival parade float has a new theme - and this year’s represents

change and technology, with Laugh Out Loud in New Westminster as the current theme (#LOLInNewWest). Organizers note that the festival and various events organized by the association would not be possible without a team of “wonderful” volunteers who do everything from help in the office to work as street marshalls during the parade. The volunteers are the backbone of the organization, and a community in general, note

Swindells leads the way at fest board A new year brings new faces to Hyack and some familiar ones as well. The Hyack Festival Association held their annual general meeting in early 2015, to name a new president and board. Don Swindells returned to the president’s seat for a second term - his first was in 2006. He has said he’s excited to be back on the board, noting that the city has changed, evolved and “blossomed” in the last several years with innovative developments like Anvil Centre, but has maintained its incredible sense of heritage and history at the same time. During the AGM, which was held at Inn on the Quay, the rest of the board was elected as well. David Brett is the vice president; Ryan Ferrer is secretary; Alan Wardle is president elect/treasurer; Peter Goodwin sits as past president; and, finally, Marge

Ashdown, David MacGrotty, Brenda Adam and Gerda Suess all serve as directors. Swindells noted that he has embraced the world of social media this year and is helping to spread the #lolinnewwest theme that is also part of the Hyack float this year. Laugh Out Loud in New Westminster is the focus of the theme, with an eye to highlighting the fun and friendly events going on in the Royal City. At the AGM, outgoing president Peter Goodwin looked back over the previous year, noting the change and growth of the association, then handed over the reins to Swindells, who talked about the upcoming year as one of renewal and acheivement. The meeting also included the announcement of the Volunteer of the Year, Deb Wardle, and the Sponsor of the Year, Key West Ford. For more information about the association, see www.hyack.bc.ca.

HYACK FESTIVAL MAY 16-24, 2015

Hyack Volunteer of the Year: It’s all about giving Deb Wardle came to volunteering the way many people do: through her children. But she has stayed with it, long after her children have grown, because of the positive impact she sees in the community. Her children have at various times been involved with the Miss New Westminster Ambassador Program and the Hyack Football program through NWSS, among others, and participating as a parent was just second nature. “My husband and I both got very involved, we just liked to always be there for our kids and to be part of things,” she notes. “We felt that it helped make things better for the kids and we got a lot of enjoyment out of seeing the kids succeed.” But over time, that evolved into a joy for seeing successive generations of kids coming through the programs have fun and accomplish their goals, as well. “I get a lot of satisfaction out of that, of knowing that you’re there to help. I saw the difference the (ambassador program)

made, the growth that the young women experienced and felt like it was important to protect that and help it grow, too” she said. “Being part of something that is bigger than you, and trying to make your community better and stronger, that’s really enjoyable.” Wardle says that philosophy is something she carries in her work with the ambassador program, where they hope to instill in participants the sense that working to benefit others is rewarding and beneficial. “It’s about giving, not getting,” she said. “For example, we say in the ambassador program that the crown is not a decoration, it’s a responsibility and with it comes a great contribution on your part to grow, give back and participate in your community.” Wardle helped organize a major reunion last year for all past and current participants and volunteers with the ambassador program and she and her husband are still involved with Hyack

football, taking photos and participating in events. “Sometimes there’s lots to be done and you have an idea in your head of what you hope to see and you believe in it, and you want it to go well, and so you jump in and do what you can.” Her efforts were recognized last year as she was nominated for the New Westminster Citizen of the Year award. “That was wonderful but for me my goal is to help young people to grow and develop and succeed,” she said. “Getting recognition for that is nice but it’s not why any volunteer does what they do.”

Key West Ford Hyack International Parade is a highlight, past and present What says spring in New Westminster? The Key West Ford Hyack International parade, of course. With clowns, entertainment, music, and of course plenty of floats - from the wild to the traditional - the parade has become a popular annual tradition in the Royal City. Going on more than four decades, the parade is a both cherished memory and family tradition for many in New Westminster, with many attendees having taken part year after year. And it’s easy to see why: as one of the region’s largest parades, there’s plenty to see and fun to be had for every age and background. This year’s parade kicks off at 11 a.m at Sixth Street and Eighth Avenue, travelling along Sixth to Queens Avenue, then north along First into Queen’s Park. Crowds will converge once again in the city’s Uptown on May 23 for this fun family event. The title sponsor is once again Key West Ford, with Port Metro Vancouver sponsoring as well.

This year, the festivities will be led by Grand Marshall Travis Johnson, co-owner of the Vancouver Circus School. Following him will be an assortment of parade participants that represent a diversity of ages, cultures and entertainment. Among these are the Vancouver Giants, Burnaby North Senior Secondary Marching Band, Capital Lakefair Washington float, City of New Westminster Pipe Band, Elks Club, Falun Dafa Association, Marysville Washington Float, the New Westminster May Queen Suite, the New Westminster Senior Secondary Cheer Team, New Westminster Senior Secondary Band, the Salmon Bellies, Silver Diamond Country Dancers, to name just a few. Miss New Westminster and her fellow ambassadors will also be in the parade, as part of the Hyack Festival Association’s annual float.

PARADE SPONSOR

This year’s float theme is Laugh Out Loud in New Westminster, using the online hashtag of #lolinnewwest. The theme is intended to encourage community enjoyment and participation, while recog-

Parade Marshall: What you need to know from the big top to the parade for the 2015 parade When Travis Johnson leads the way at the upcoming Key West Ford Hyack International Parade, the big crowds won’t likely phase him. As the co-founder and owner of the Vancouver Circus School, Johnson is no newcomer to having an audience - even if he is a new hand at parade marshall. “I have to admit, I’ve never been a parade marshall before,” he said recently. “But I’m really looking forward to it.” Johnson grew up in the Royal City, and his Vancouver Circus School has a location here in the city, so being part of the festival is a particular honour for him. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. This is a great community, and I have strong roots here.” Johnson grew up with circus and trampoline; his parents ran recreational and competitive trampoline programs at the national and provincial level for nearly 20 years. He began competing himself at the age of 6, and later won a number of Western

Canadian championships. He later retired from the sport to work in business development, starting his own entrepreunrial endeavours in 1999. Those included being vice president for Vibe Design Ltd., an audio-visual production company, for six years, co-founding the Vancouver Circus School in 2004 and co-founding and acting as Director of Operations for the Inner Ring Circus in 2005. In 2012, he became a cofounding member of the Asia-Pacific Social Circus Association. He has been granted a variety of accolades in recent years including Small Business of the Year award by the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce, NEXT UP award from Tourism New Westminster, and was nominated for the Builder’s Choise award for his Vancouver Circus School’s New Westminster location. He is currently the executive director of the Vancouver Circus School, director of operations for the Inner Ring Circus and a level 3 certified trampoline coach, and an Air Space Freestyle Skiing level 2 coach.

It took a few years – nearly 30, in fact – but Richard McBride Elementary is home to this year’s Royal City May Queen. Claire Haffner, a student at Richard McBride, will be crowned May Queen at the annual celebration at Queen’s Park Stadium on May 20. She’s the 145th May Queen since the tradition began here, and the first from her school in 26 years. Haffner told The Record she was “excited and shocked” after she learned the news at a recent council meeting. “I really wanted to represent my school. … It’s very exciting. My friends were really hoping it was going to be our school, so I think they’ll be excited.” Students in all of the city’s elementary schools vote for their individual representatives – one boy and one girl from each school – and then positions in the Royal Court are determined by a random drawing at city council in advance of May Day. New Westminster’s celebrations are the longest continuously running event May Day event in the Commonwealth and one that has become, for many families, a multi-generational tradition. The first May Queen was crowned in New Westminster in 1870, after special May Day festivities were organized by the local fire department. They have continued, uninterrupted, since that time. The May Day celebrations are held at Queen’s Park, with Maypole dances that students learn at their schools in advance. The May Queen and her court are then crowned; they will participate in a variety of events throughout the coming year, including the Hyack Parade. Haffner will be joined by her classmate Colburn Connelly,

who will serve as the Richard McBride Elementary School’s royal knight. Joining the McBride pair as part of the 2015 May Queen Suite are: Ayanna Seymour (first Maid of Honour) and Owen West (royal knight) from F.W. Howay; Makena Thomas (second Maid of Honour) and Luca Redford (royal knight) from Herbert Spencer; Summer Loewen (medal bearer) and Hussein Hage-Hassan (royal knight) from

Connaught Heights; and Maggie Roest (register bearer) and Kevin Addo (royal knight) from Lord Kelvin. Also in this year’s May Queen Suite are Charlize Melliza (first flower girl) and Gordon Tan (royal knight) from Qayqayt; Stephanie Joy Fajilan (second flower girl) and Marco Vela-Ruiz (royal knight) from Queensborough Middle School; and Lindsay De Souza (third flower girl) and Nate Akey (royal knight) from Lord Tweedsmuir. Keep an eye out for the May Queen in her traditional white crown and robes, along with her royal companions, during Saturday’s parade festivities.

Ambassadors for the city develop skills, gain friendships and create valuable connections

PREMIER SPONSOR OF THE 2015 HYACK AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

The Hyack Miss New Westminster Ambassador program has been going strong for nearly five decades - and organizers hope the program will continue to grow and thrive well into the future. This year marks the 44th annual crowning of a Miss New Westminster. Deb Wardle, who volunteers as a program coordinator and chaperone, says the benefits she sees for the young women who participate are countless. “They truly get so much out of this,” she said. “They are able to travel, to represent their city. They develop lifelong friendships with their fellow ambassadors from New Westminster, but also those they meet at events in other communities. And they have the chance to interact with strong positive women role models in the local business community and other fields. It really gives them a bigger view of the world, and themselves, and their opportunities in the future.” Wardle knows a thing or two about the impact it can have – her two daughters were both involved in the program, first in 2001 and then later in 2012. “With the young women involved, I see such incredible growth over the year. There’s a light that goes on, like ‘Wow, theres more to me than I realized’ and we try to bring into their fear of influence role models from the community, so

they can learn and be inspired, but also so they can see the value of giving back and in turn being mentors and role models to young people in the community.” Each year, all the ambassadors who participate in the program continue to be part of activities and events throughout the year - and get an opportunity to become part of a unique “family.” “They become part of this wonderful network of past ambassadors,” she said. “That can provide so many opportunities for friendships, networks of support and encouragement, and a real opportunity to learn and be inspired.” Last fall, the program celebrated its first alumni reunion, which Wardle says was a huge success - and an event they hope to turn into an annual celebration. The program’s goals are to provide young women in New Westminster with an opportunity to experience professional instruction in etiquette, public speaking and career development, with an eye to providing skills that will last through their lifetimes. Hyack ambassadors take part in events throughout New Westminster, but also represent the city on the Hyack float at parades around B.C. and through the Pacific Northwest. The program highlight is the Miss New Westmisnter Pageant, which was held in late March.
