Runaway success: If crowd estimates are correct, more people descended on Columbia Street for the StrEAT Food Truck Festival than there are residents of the City of New Westminster. The third annual festival offered foodies a choice of 73 food trucks, including Tasty Torpedo. For more photos of the festival, go to www.newwestrecord.ca. PHOTOS JENNIFER GAUTHIER

The third annual Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Festival was a foodie’s dream come true. Seventy-three food trucks descended on Columbia Street for the Aug. 22 event, which is considered the largest festival of its kind in Canada. If the estimates are accurate, more people attended the festival than New West’s population. “We are very happy with the crowds. We talked to the police on the day of – they felt it was about 90,000,” said Kendra Johnston, executive director of the Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Association. “It was a sea of people right from four o’clock all the way through.” Food trucks stretched from Eighth Street almost to the access ramp onto the Pattullo Bridge.Tables were set up along the way so folks could sit down to eat. “It was a fun day,” Johnston said. “The weather worked out great. Everyone seemed really happy. We have had very little constructive criticism or negative feedback – a few Grab a bite: Silvia Martines, left, and Mathieu Gicquel prepare grilled comments about lineups. We tried to prepare people mencheese in the Mom’s Grilled Cheese truck. The investigation continues into the death of a homeless man whose body was found near Sapperton Landing last summer. On Aug. 16, 2014, New Westminster police reported a body had been found on the bank of the Fraser River near Sapperton Landing. Police believed the death was suspicious, and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was called in to determine whether he was murdered. About three days later, the homicide team announced they were investigating the murder of 36-year-old Christian Klatt. Investigators believed he had been living in a makeshift camp on the riverbank,

near where his body was found. One year later, investigators don’t have any new information on the case, but Sgt. Stephanie Ashton, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, confirmed the investigation is still active. “The hope is always that with time passing witnesses who may have been reluctant or unaware of their importance to this investigation, will come forward,” she wrote in an email to the Record. Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide police tipline 1-877-5514448 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. – By Cayley Dobie

Facebook posting triggers questions A man allegedly seen touching himself at Queen’s Park last weekend won’t be facing any charges, New Westminster police say. On Aug. 23, a post began circulating on Facebook that included two photos of a man lounging on the lawn near the playgrounds in Queen’s Park. The post alleged the man was watching the children play in the park, but he had no kids of his own there. The post then alleged the man proceeded to put his hands down his pants and “play with himself.” Onlookers called police, who arrived around 3 p.m., but by then, the man was gone. Police, however, were

able to track down the man in question and speak with him, according to a media release from New Westminster police. After speaking to witnesses and the man, police determined there was no evidence of a criminal offence or any risk to public safety, the release stated. “We’ve taken this matter very seriously, and are encouraging the public to observe and report any suspicious activity to the police, but not to take matters into their own hands,” said Acting Sgt. Jeff Scott, spokesperson for the New Westminster Police Department, in the release. – By Cayley Dobie

City council going on a road trip New Westminster city council is taking the show on the road for a few upcoming meetings. In the coming weeks, city council will hold meetings in various New West neighbourhoods. The first stop is Anvil Centre for the Aug. 31 committee of the whole meeting at 3 p.m. and regular meeting at 7 p.m. On Sept. 14, council will meet at the Queensborough Community Centre at

5:30 p.m., and on Sept. 28 council will have an open workshop at 2:30 p.m. and a public hearing at 6 p.m. at the Sapperton Pensioners Hall. Mayor Jonathan Cote said council is “going on a road trip” and travelling around the community while some renovations are underway in council chambers. – ByTheresa McManus

Royal City Farmers Market is moving on up – and out – this winter. The group’s winter market is relocating from River Market to Uptown New Westminster starting in November. To accommodate the market, Belmont Street

will be closed to traffic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the first and third Saturdays of the month from November to April. Melissa Maltais, the market’s operations manager, said the move comes after discussions with market vendors and surveys of customers to assess their wants and needs from the market.

“We really let the customers lead with this one. Our vendors spoke to us too about where they want to be and how they see themselves growing,” Maltais said. “We really want to grow our market to be a very prominent Saturday market, so we want to add more vendors and more Continued on page 8

Opinion OUR VIEW

Funcouver, just get out of our way Perhaps it’s the fact that we are at a nexus of sorts in the Lower Mainland. Snuggled up against a wild river, forced to manoeuvre railway tracks, narrow hilly streets, and, of course, we share what is a very tiny footprint for a city. It can, at times, feel like a crowded little city. But because of that ‘closeness’ we’re more apt to rub shoulders with more diverse folks as we wend our way through the Royal City. Perhaps, it’s just serendip-

ity. But for whatever reasons, the stars and the food trucks aligned on Saturday to provide foodies and just plain eaters with a glorious day of grazing on Columbia Street. Seventy-three – yes, 73, food trucks lined Columbia for as long as the eye could see and the stomach could rumble. The diversity reflected almost everyone’s tastes: spicy, comfort, you name it – you could chow down on it.

We find it amazing that the number of people attending the event during the day was more than the population of New Westminster. That, alone, is pretty astounding. Granted, for some people the idea of lining up cheek to jowl with other folks for food served out of trucks is not their idea of eating out. But the payoff is worth it. Tales of scrumptious Beaver Tails were still being told on Monday by those who

feasted at the Beaver Tail truck. We won’t detail all of the food ‘memories’ but suf-

... stars and food trucks aligned on Saturday fice it to say they were numerous. Following in the wake of a pretty spectacular Pride

festival, New Westminster should be taking a few bows now. The Downtown BIA, and New Westminster Tourism deserve full credit for making sure that the food festival was a success. The City of New Westminster, including the police department and loads of BIA volunteers, made sure everything ran smoothly. If there was one thing that might make it even better, it would be an ability to have

more small portions – perhaps even a tasters’ truck? Lots of folks wanted to try more types of food. But if that’s the biggest complaint of the day, well, such is life. New Westminster has always been a city known for throwing a good festival or two, but now the bar has been raised even higher. Vancouver, once nicknamed, Funcouver, has some real competition now.

MY VIEW KEITH BALDREY

Election not the focus yet Even for a political observer, it’s difficult to get too excited about an election campaign during the dog days of summer. With the exception of political operatives, I suspect it’s the same thing for most people. Minds are elsewhere right now: the beach, barbecues, vacations, etc. It’s not just because it’s summer that the federal election campaign appears sluggish and distant. It’s also because its record length (11 weeks) means many folks are putting off “paying attention” until voting day draws nearer. I suspect the interest and energy will pick up after Labour Day, when vacations end and kids go back to school. But of course, the campaign has been underway a few weeks now and even if it’s not on everyone’s radar, it has displayed some glimpses of what to expect. Judging from what we’ve seen so far, we can expect the NDP’s Tom Mulcair to continue to be cautious in terms of policies. He’s been emphasizing things like law and order, and child care and not taxes, and has ignored his party’s sizable pro-Palestine and anti-development factions. Mulcair wants to make sure he doesn’t look threatening or radical, and wants to present a viable alternative to a governing party that appears to be teetering. The Conservatives’ Stephen Harper will continue

his tightly-scripted, ubercontrol approach to campaigning. He will continue to try to appeal to a minority of voters, most of them in southern Ontario, Alberta and parts of B.C. And his policy roll-out will continue to be aimed at older voters. Harper is focused on the 39 per cent of the electorate who keep him in power. The Liberals’ Justin Trudeau will continue trying to be heard. He’s likely felt the slow start to the campaign the most negatively, as he appears to have the most ground to make up. But because he seems to be the underdog, any sign of rising fortunes for Trudeau may allow him to portray himself as the “comeback kid.” So far, the three leaders are mostly shadow-boxing with each other. The lack of a mass-audience televised debate has meant little direct interaction for them. No issue has dominated so far.The Duffy trial has received the most media attention, but it’s unclear whether it will cut into Conservative support. I suspect scandals don’t move voters from one party to another. In the end, the economy usually trumps everything else. Make no mistake, the campaign will heat up next month. But until then, feel free to focus on the barbecue and the beach more than on federal politicians. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

Uptown no place for loud late-night club

Winter market move gets people talking

Dear Editor The residents of Uptown New Westminster, AKA Walkertown, are, in general, quiet and respectful of each other. Some noises are essential to community well being. However, for the past several months a new group of undesirables has forced themselves on us in a malicious and disturbing way. This group is attracted to the night club in the 500 block of Seventh Street, which hosts live entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings. For several hours, the booming thump of the music permeates the neighbourhood of elderly residents until the band takes a break. This results in the migration into the streets of groups of smokers defying the smoking by-laws and yelling at each other loudly as they seem to have lost their hearing abilities. This continues at various levels from about 10 p.m. until 1 a.m., when local residents are finally able to get a short night’s sleep and prepare themselves for a Saturday repeat of thumps, yahoos and screeches. There is no justification for the night club to be the source of such a disturbance which can hardly be any benefit and properly belongs on Columbia Street. Was the current operator given a special license to inflict this problem on the pre-existing neighbourhood? Are noise bylaws being violated? It would appear they are. Ed Linstead, New Westminster

Don’t buy expensive election promises Dear Editor When there’s a drought, people understand the long-term implications but still need to be prodded into cutting back on their water consumption. Most people do it willingly and a few cheat. But none of us expect the restrictions to be lifted until the reservoirs are once again filled to a prudent level. Where does this collective common sense go when there’s an election? Canada is teetering on the edge of a recession, and the global economy is facing what could be called an economic drought. Our politicians, even the arrogant ones who preach fiscal restraint and rant against government handouts, are tossing around expensive election promises as if they are empty water bottles and then claiming only their party has the magic necessary to create the rain to fill them. Some voters, who hope to get something for nothing, flock to the party promising the biggest bottles. We could blame the politicians for their charlatan-like behaviour; however, they are merely pandering to the wants, wishes and whims of the voters. Apparently, many of us hate the thought of having to live within our means. Lloyd Atkins, via email

Jason Lesage I don’t think the River Market was ever that happy to host the winter market. Having a permanent, year-round spot somewhere around the Quay would be the best solution.

Uptown has better reach for Farmers Market Continued from page 5 food trucks. It’s really about what we stand for as a society and how we are able to grow moving forward.” The Royal City Farmers Market is currently working on some final details to pave the way for the winter market on Belmont Street. “We feel that Uptown has a bigger reach at this point for getting as many people in the New West area to come and shop from the market,” Maltais told the Record. “As part of our strategic plan, we are trying to be more inclusive and get through any barriers people may have in getting to the market. We looked a lot at different areas in New West. We felt that Uptown would be a place that we could reach people from all different demographics.” The winter market will be outdoors on Belmont Street, whereas the majority of vendors were indoors at River Market. The market is partnering with the Uptown Business Improvement Associ-

ation, which will provide a large marquee tent that will accommodate 12 to 15 covered spots for vendors. “We are really excited and interested in having this partnership with the Uptown Business Improvement Association because it’s a group we haven’t worked with before. We are going to see how that relationship works, and how we can benefit each other,” Maltais said. “We are pretty excited about the new connections we are making.” Bart Slotman, of the Uptown Business Improvement Association, thinks it’s a fantastic idea for the market and the Uptown. He said the group is keen to do what it can to facilitate the market’s move to the Uptown, which could include providing tents and promoting the market on street banners in the area. “We are working very constructively with that group to assist them where we can.We think it is very complementary to have it. It works both ways,” he said.

“Obviously, Uptown offers a more central location than where they are right now. It offers tons and tons of parking. It offers closer proximity to the majority of their customers. It offers lots of room to grow.” Slotman believes the market will benefit Uptown businesses, as it will bring customers to the Uptown. “The win for the Uptown is they are a major draw,” he said. “They draw customers to the market wherever they are located. If we are able to bring those people into the Uptown area, perhaps there is additional business to be gained for our retailers on the street.”

Slotman believes there’s a good chance market goers will pop into other Uptown retailers to get a coffee, pick up some groceries or refill a prescription while they’re in the area. “There’s that spinoff effect. For us we are always looking for opportunities to bring additional businesses into the area, additional people into the area. Then of course, it comes down to the individual retailers to make sure they have some-

thing to offer to that clientele that is now walking up and down the street,” he said. “It’s a win-win. It’s a win for the market, it’s a win for Uptown.” Maltais said it’s a difficult decision for Royal City Farmers Market to move the winter market out of its home in River Market. “It was a very hard deci-

sion.We have been at River Market for the past four years with the winter market,” she said. “We have grown a lot, we have learned a lot and we have worked so closely with the people there. It’s been an incredibly valuable partnership with them.”

Funding is an issue

Continued from page 1 parents and families of people that help to keep us going,” he said. Johns said many of the high-risk findings from the audit were the result of poor bookkeeping, not poor service, and an executive director with more time in the organization would have helped produce a more accurate report. “I’m not trying to hide anything,” he said. “Yes, there’s areas that we could do better, but we do a quality service here, and our successes speak for themselves.” Fraser Health seems to agree. Pioneer has worked with the health authority – its primary funder – for more than 15 years, and officials say they have never had concerns about the nonprofit’s services. “They’re very good providers,” Fraser Health mental health director Meryl McDowell told the Record. “We’ve been happy with the care they’ve provided our clients.” McDowell maintained the audit – the first of its kind in more than 15 years for Pioneer – was accurate but Fraser Health has “made significant progress since then in understanding the findings” with more information from Pioneer. She went on to say the health authority is happy with Pioneer’s response to the audit and the actions the non-profit has taken. Pioneer, which grew out of the RiverviewVolunteer Society in the early 1980s, has helped thousands of people battling mental illness and addiction to reintegrate into the communities of NewWestminster and Burnaby through transitional housing, according

to Johns. But his organization struggles with inadequate funding, he said. The audit, which covered the fiscal year 2013/14, found Pioneer was running a deficit despite maintaining minimal administrative costs and not always keeping up minimum staffing levels or spending all of its food budgets.

At this point we are not helping them ... “We have probably for the last five years run this program at a deficit and have continually tried to work with Fraser Health around our funding, because they’re our major funder, to get the finances a little bit more in line,” Johns said. A major factor in recent years has been Pioneer’s success as an employer, according to the non-profit’s president, Roseanne Rothenberg. She said staff that started more than 30 years ago have stayed with the organization and moved up the pay scale, and some have recently retired and received sick-leave

payouts and retirement bonuses as per their collective agreement. Fraser Health’s staffing model, however, is based on employee salaries in the medium range and doesn’t factor in such costs, Rothenberg said. Fraser Health finance manager Colleen Donato told the Record that Pioneer is funded fairly. When asked if the health authority’s standardized staff-funding model was working for Pioneer, however, she said, “In the last year, probably with the timing of some of their expenses, no. Going forward it should work for them.” The audit also recommended Pioneer improve its bottom line with spending cuts and fundraising, but Johns and Rothenberg said there’s no place left to cut. “We asked (Fraser Health) that,” Rothenberg said. “‘Where would you like us to cut?’ And there’s no place that we can cut, and they know that. I believe that they’re not in a position, because of what they’re dictated by the government to cut expenses, to give us anything more.” As for fundraising, Rothenberg said Pioneer doesn’t have the staff resources or the money to hire

a professional. “Our energies are focused more into contract work,” she said. “(Fundraising) is not an area that we’ve ever know or are proficient in. The need over the last three years has dictated that we start learning.” Pioneer won’t be getting any help from Fraser Health in the form of increased funding for administration, though. “At this point we are not helping them,” Donato said. “Unfortunately we cannot.”

New West mayor launches into blogosphere Theresa McManus AROUND TOWN

tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca

Mayor Jonathan Cote is fulfilling one of his election promises by entering the blogosphere. Cote kick-started a new blog on Aug. 18 and followed that up with a post about the Top 20 most popular things in New Westminster on Instagram. “What I did was I went to #NewWest on Instagram, and basically over the last five weeks, I started counting what people were posting. There were some things that were very popular in the community,” he told the Record. “I thought it was an interesting way to find out what people are loving about New Westminster.” So just what did he find? “The top spot was the Pattullo Bridge and the SkyBridge – some from Pier Park, some from other locations in the city,” he said. “Those bridges seem to be what people love to take photos of in the city.” Cote found that Westminster Pier Park was the second most popular attraction in New West featured on Instagram, followed by the Pride crosswalk at Church and Columbia streets that was installed in time for the

New West Pride Festival. To see Cote’s Top 20 list, visit mayorcote.ca. “What I take out of all the things I looked at is, Number 1, the waterfront seems to be where people are gravitating to and what people love to take pictures of in the city,” he said. “Number 2, there seems to be a lot of appreciation for some of the unique, small art projects in the city. There’s the Before I Die (at Westminster Pier Park), the parklet in Sapperton. The mosaic tiles get a lot of photographs. Sometimes we think you have to do these big projects to change a city, but I think, to me looking at Instagram, it’s almost telling me these smaller, more unique and creative projects are generating more buzz in the community. I thought that was interesting.”

LOCAL NAMED TOP SEA CADET Kudos to Cadet Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Kevin Daniel, who finished the cadet year on a high note. Daniel was selected as Cadet Coxswain and led Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Quadra in Comox for the 2015 summer training session. The honour of being appointed the most senior cadet aboard the train-

ing centre is bestowed on one cadet annually and is the highest attainable position for a Royal Canadian Sea Cadet. Daniel received the good news at an emotional endof-year awards ceremony at Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corp Fraser, the local New Westminster sea cadets corps. “We knew that he had been selected several weeks in advance, but kept the surprise for the ceremony,” said Lieut. Bryan Watson, commanding officer of RCSCC Fraser. “It was worth waiting, as the shock of the announcement set in and raw emotion with tears of excitement came across Daniel’s face. We’re all so very proud of his achievement and know that he will represent New Westminster very well in his role.” At the end-of-year- ceremony, Daniel was honoured with several awards, including the Navy League of Canada Medal of Excellence as the top cadet in the region, and the Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence in recognition of his commitment to citizenship and volunteer activities both inside and outside the cadet program. For more information, visit joinseacadets.ca.

Your journey starts here.

Stingray

Drive it and you’ll wonder why it doesn’t cost more BY BRENDAN McALEER

brendanmcaleer@gmail.com

Tweet: @brendan_mcaleer

Everything else now tastes like styrofoam. Seriously, one splash of ‘Vette hot sauce and even a tuner car starts feeling like the turbocharger fell off. This is GM’s flagship, the best thing they make (that isn’t a truck). For years it’s been a performance benchmark that many respected – even while complaining about the seats. Well, they’ve fixed the seats, and the entire interior. And everything else is better too. Even though this version of the General’s ballistic missile should be tame, equipped as it is with satellite navigation and an automatic transmission, it is not. It’s a beast, a fry-your neurons machine with a removable roof and a push-button starter. The Chevrolet Corvette is all-new. However, it’s still all old-school too – and that’s a good thing.

Design:

More angular than ever, Chevy’s design team took the curving cues of past Corvettes and basically threw them out the window. This new Stingray is all sharp cuts and pointy bits, an arrowhead chipped from obsidian. I think it looks great apart from the very front end: there’s something just a bit too frog-like about that straight-across grille. However, every other facet of this thing is a masterpiece, from the quad-exhaust trumpets out back to the historic-inspired side-badge to the vents in the hood that let out wavy heat in the cool air. This particular tester is spec’d as a something of a cruiser, fitted with staggered, split-spoke 19” and 20” alloys front and back, without having the Z51 performance package. If it were my ‘Vette, I’d be spending money on the go-fast stuff and leaving the shiny bits on the table. Still, even the most-basic Corvette looks the business.

Environment:

It feels like it was engineered by hot rodders and computer scientists alike, and when you poke it with a stick it wakes up in a hurry.

But then, they pretty much always did. The problem with the Corvette for the last several decades hasn’t been the looks or the performance, but the way the interior was always a bit of a let-down. Step inside and you could see where the costcutting came from. Here though, it’s as good inside as out. The seats are the biggest improvement, comfortable enough for a cruise to Bowling Green while bolstered enough for a quick autocross session. Add in swathes of leather, an instrument panel that doesn’t just look up-to-date but is actually ahead of the curve, and easy to use infotainment, and you’ve got a real winner. Looking around for things to complain about, a simple map-button to pull up the navigation would be nice, but really, the Corvette now has the interior quality and look to match its price. Sit in one, and you don’t even need to drive it to see why it’s a $60-90,000 car. Drive it though, and you’ll wonder why it doesn’t cost more.

Performance:

Did I say cruiser? I meant cruise missile. Dawdling along on the Sea-to-Sky behind your usual oblivious rental RV, a brief passing lane opened up. I judged the gap, figured it was big enough, walked on the accelerator. Under the Corvette’s long hood, a bomb went off. The all-aluminum 6.2L LT1 V8 in this car isn’t some high-strung, rev-needy turbine. It feels like it was built by the people who produced the B-17 Flying Fortress and Indy 500 winners and Bonneville Salt Flat racers.

For this year, the Corvette gets a new eight-speed automatic transmission with paddleshifters that’s the equal of that found in the Jaguar F-Type. But heck, you could hook that V8 up to a Conestoga wagon and it’d make the thing scoot. 455hp comes snarling out almost immediately, with a torque peak of 470lb-ft rocketing you forward. The nose lifts in pure old-school ‘Vette fashion, you dust off everyone in sight, and then you look down at the speedometer and apply the brakes quickly. Holy Dinah: it’s a ‘Vette all right. Throw the Stingray through a few corners or around a skidpad, and it’s equally wonderful, despite not having the catlike quickness available with the handling package. There are multiple modes for both traction control and driveline management, but you best be ginger on the throttle if you completely defeat the traction control. In the dry, it’ll spin the tires from a rest without hesitation. In the wet – well, just make sure your life insurance is up to date. And for all that madness, the new Stingray is something of a pussycat. It’ll make distance easily, is relatively quiet at speed (road noise splits the difference between the old 997 Porsche 911 and the new 991), and will even return liveable fuel economy on the highway. It’s wonderful, all the best of the old and the new combined together. Sell your kids and buy a Night Race Blue one with the stick-shift.

Features:

Chevy’s MyLink system anchors the infotainment for the Corvette, and is simple and easy to use, with nice big touchscreen buttons. It includes the Siri system to control compatible phones. Fuel economy figures for the automatic-equipped ‘Vette are set at 8.1L/100kms on the highway, and 14.6L/100kms in the city. If you’re driving it quickly on a lonely road, it’ll burn far more fuel, but will easily match the highway mileage on the way there.

Green Light:

Power!; great styling; comfortable seats and greatly improved fit and finish; all around performance

Stop Sign:

A handful in the wet; limited storage with targa roof off; seating position still a little high

The Checkered Flag:

A full modernized and updated take on the Corvette, all without losing the car’s rowdy soul.

Your Career Starts Here! If you are willing to show up and work hard, maybe you should think about being a reinforcing ironworker!

LIFE IS GOOD:

Guy and Geri Allen enjoyed a dance on the New West boardwalk during the annual Quayside Boardwalk Festival and Sale on Saturday. Crowds flocked to the waterfront in search of treasures and a good time. It’s estimated more than 10,000 shoppers strolled along the waterfront esplanade on Aug. 22 for the ninth annual Quayside sale. Nearly 200 vendors sold new and used items at tables set up along the boardwalk. Performers entertained the crowds at four stages on the boardwalk. Along with giving folks a chance to sell and buy items, the event raises funds for charity, with the proceeds still being tallied.

We offer an apprenticeship into the Ironworker Trade with continuous on-thejob training. Quickly advance from Journeyman to a: • • • • • •

Voices ring out in new Anvil community choir Tereza Verenca

Expect to hear a lot more singing around Anvil Centre come fall. The cultural hub will be launching its choral program on Oct. 4. No experience is necessary, according to choir director Shane Raman.

“I think our ambition is to start a family of choirs, so eventually, we may have a children’s choir, and then a sort of a smaller chamber choir for people who are a little more advanced,” he said. The centre is holding a choral workshop and a master class on Sunday, Aug. 30. Local chamber choir

Van Deca, Melanie Adams and Raman will be on hand. The day will include a special tour of Anvil Centre. The inaugural season will run until Dec. 6, with a seasonal performance at Anvil Centre. Raman said he sees future seasons running from September to June. Practice will run Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m.

Singing has always been a part of Raman’s life. He grew up singing in church choirs, which led to a bachelor of music in voice performance from UBC.Today, the baritone sings with music intima, Cor Flammae and teaches private voice lessons at the Sarah McLachlan School of Music and the Delta Commu-

nity Music School. “He has a magnetic personality, and very charismatic, but also has fantastic credentials and a great history,” said Corbin Murdoch, arts programmer with the city. “We’re thrilled to have him on board.” While there are no auditions, registrants need to schedule an intake ap-

AA Family-Owned Family-Owned City’s secrets revealed Funeral FuneralHome Homemakes does make a difference... a difference... Archie and Dale Miller

editorial@newwestrecord.ca

We were reminded recently of a series of short TV pieces entitled Secrets of the City that we created about 10 years ago for Shaw TV.They were popular items that pointed out many overlooked or unknown features of the town. One of the pieces is connected to the Royal Engineers’ time here in New Westminster and relates to their important surveying in the Colony. Near the northwest corner of East Columbia at Richmond Street, there is a survey monument which marks the number one survey point for the engineers’ work. It is duly marked with the location’s specifics and has been used in a few formal ceremonies. Many people are unaware that Friendship Gardens, near city hall, ultimately owes its inception to a massive storm, 1962’s typhoon Freda, and the creative landscaping ability of a senior member of the city’s parks department. The storm brought down many

large trees and, in what is now the park, their stumps left huge holes. These holes, stepped down the hill, were developed into a water park with a Japanese theme, and have been a popular site with an interesting background story ever since.

The “secret” lies in the park’s top area In Queen’s Park, if you know where to look, you can see the site of an old railroad bed as it goes through the park from First Street towards McBride Boulevard. Look near the Fourth Avenue entrance to the park and you will see a flat, road-like area of lawn heading downhill, eventually behind the tennis courts toward McBride. This was a rail spur that connected the streetcar line on First Street to a brickyard in the Glen Creek ravine. Prospect Park, usually identified as Albert Cres-

cent, offers a great view of the bridges and, on a clear day, Mount Baker. The “secret” lies at the park’s top area, where, along the old sidewalk, can still be found sections of old wall and even gateposts from a time when the area beyond the wall and former fence was the home of St. Ann’s Academy. This Catholic school was located there from 1865 until it was demolished in 1968. The Simon Fraser monument at Westminster Quay moved several times before arriving at its current location. The monument started out near the top of Albert Crescent where it was unveiled in two sections during two events in 1908 and 1911. Later, it was moved farther down the Crescent’s hillside, eventually being close to Columbia St. It was moved to its present prominent waterfront site with the Westminster Quay development. These are five examples from the Shaw series from 2004/05.We will tell of a few more from this series in a future Our Past column.

Books can help kids starting school in fall

By Alicia Dobbs

editorial@newwestrecord.ca

Back to school is just around the corner.Whether your child is entering school for the first time or returning after a long summer vacation, the library can help both of you get ready for the new school year. The first day of kindergarten can be a scary and exciting experience. Books like Monkey: Not Ready for Kindergarten (Brown) and Not This Bear:A First Day of School Story (Capucilli) can help open up a discussion if your child is feeling anxious about this big step.Young children who are interested in learning about school experiences will also enjoy School Days Around theWorld (Ruurs), which shows kids

and classrooms in thirteen different countries. Looking for more good books for your new student? Ask in the children’s department for our “100 Books to Read in Kindergarten” list of recommended titles. For some laughs, try the hilarious role-reversal story, The Day My Mom Came to Kindergarten (Fergus), or A Funny Thing Happened on theWay to School (Cali), which chronicles all the possible excuses a child could have for being late to class (ninja attacks and being abducted by mole people among them). If you’re looking for things to do, try making something out of the books Cool Stuff for School (Scheunemann) or Back-toSchool Crafts (Locke), which

have tons of great ideas for locker accessories, pencil boxes, and other school supplies that you can make on your own. For kids who are looking for a little extra help, there are books like School Made Easier:A Kid’s Guide to Study Strategies and AnxietyBusting Tools (Moss), which have tips and tricks for succeeding in the coming year. The library also owns study guides for elementary and high school subjects like Math and English. Don’t forget that librarians are always happy to help you find resources for school projects and homework, too! You can also visit www. nwmp.ca to find library programs for school-aged children. Happy back to school everyone!

Game 2 letdown too big an obstacle to overcome inWLA senior A lacrosse playoff final

Tom Berridge

tberridge@newwestrecord.ca

New Westminster’s last stand lasted less than 25 minutes. The senior A Salmonbellies fell behind early and could not recover, losing in four straight games to the Victoria Shamrocks following a 10-5 defeat at Queen’s Park Arena last Friday in the Western Lacrosse Association best-of-seven final. The win advanced the Shamrocks into the Mann Cup for the third consecutive season.Victoria lost the cup final the last two years to the Six Nations Chiefs. Victoria beat ’Bellies starter Alexis Buque twice to the blocker side in the opening nine minutes and extended that lead to 4-1 before the first period expired. First star Rhys Duch led the onslaught with a hat trick in the first 20 minutes, including backto-back counters less than two minutes apart late in the period. Cory Conway wasted no time keeping the momentum going, scoring with the team’s first shot on goal with less than a minute gone in the second frame. League and playoff scoring leader Corey Small then put the visitors up 6-1, tallying the eventual game-winning goal on transition two minutes later. “We talked about going out and getting a strong start, … but their offence can shoot the ball,” said Kyle Ross, who watched all of the second and third periods from the stands after receiving a game misconduct for fighting with Ben McCullough late in the first period. Duch, with his game-high fourth goal of the match, and third star Tyler Hass, with a transition power-play goal, drove Buque from the nets with the ’Rocks up 8-1 at the midway mark of the period. With goalie of the year, Eric Penney between the pipes, New West managed two late ones to finish the second frame behind 8-3. The Record’s choice for New West’s playoff MVP, Keegan Bal, halved the deficit to 8-4 with his second goal of the game, but that was quickly erased on a transition counter by Victoria’s Karsen Leung, who registered a sizzling 0.444 shot percentage from the back end in the playoffs. Aaron Bold, who had a lot to prove after being left off either of the WLA’s first and second all-star teams, was named the playoff MVP following a 45-save performance and a .900 save percentage in the final game.

The turning point in the series came in Game 2 at Queen’s Park, when the Salmonbellies surrendered four unanswered goals in the final period to hand Victoria a 10-9 win and a two-game advantage in the series, said Ross. “If we came out in the third period and got one or two and squeezed that one out, it would have changed the mentality,” Ross said. But winning a Game 3 on the Island is difficult at any time and with elimination looming in the back of players’ minds, it was no wonder

New West appeared to be gripping the stick a little too tightly in the fourth and final game. In fact, the Salmonbellies appeared too individualistic in their offensive systems at times on Friday. The team’s lack of goals in the playoffs also revealed a weakness in the Salmonbellies lineup. New West averaged just 6.5 goals against Bold in the playoff finals and mustered an 8.7 goals/ Continued on page 27

Brandon Goodwin is hoping to be the one New Westminster player still standing at this year’s Mann Cup final. Goodwin, son of current New Westminster Salmonbellies head coach Steve Goodwin, is on the roster of the Six Nations Chiefs, who currently lead the Peterborough Lakers 3-2 in Ontario’s best-of-seven Major Series Lacrosse final. The 24-year-old former first-round pick of the Langley Thunder in the 2012 Western Lacrosse Association junior draft was traded to Coquitlam the following season and played all of 2014 before staying back east and working out a transfer with Six Nations this year. Younger brother Justin Goodwin was a member of the New Westminster Salmonbellies who lost the WLA final to Victoria in four games. Earlier this season, Justin had a super senior year at Lake Erie College, where he was named U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division II defensive player of the year. The biology major was also the Eastern College Athletic College top defensive player of the year, while also garnering first team and scholar All-American honours after earning a 3.82 cummulative grade-point average while at Lake Erie.

Former New Westminster Salmonbellie Ilija Gajic resigned with the pro lacrosse Vancouver Stealth last Friday. The six-year National Lacrosse League veteran inked a one-year deal with the Stealth along with free agent Keegan Bal, pending league approval. Gajic is coming off one of his most productive NLL seasons, scoring 11 goals in 2015. The former Colorado Mammoth draft pick collected 87 loose balls and played in a variety of roles for the Stealth during the year. Gajic was originally acquired by the Stealth from the Mammoth after the 2013 season. Over his career, Gajic has played in 86 regular season games, scoring 45 goals and 61 assists, totalling 106 regular season points to go

along with 529 loose balls. “Ilija is coming off a strong season and we love everything he brings to our roster. He can play defense, run transition and play offence and also brings incredible energy and commitment. We are looking forward to an even bigger year from him in 2016,” said Stealth president and general manager, Doug Locker in a club press release. Bal, who led the senior A New Westminster Salmonbellies in the Western Lacrosse Association playoffs this season, played his Junior A lacrosse in New West, putting up 57 points in 16 games in his final season. Bal is currently in his third season with the senior A club. The talented righthander finished third overall in WLA playoff scoring with a team-high 17 goals and

31 points in eight playoff games. A graduate of Lake Erie College, Bal was named the ECAC Division II offensive player of the year and established a school record with 80 points in his final year of eligibility. Bal was originally drafted in the third round (25th overall) by the Toronto Rock in the 2013 NLL Entry Draft, but opted to pursue his master’s degree at the University of Durham in England. “Keegan has had another really strong summer and has played extremely well in the post season this year.We have been very impressed and look for him to compete for a spot this coming season,” Locker said in the release. Season tickets for the Stealth are on sale now. For details, visit www. StealthLAX.com

Continued from page 26 game average in the regular season – the lowest of any of the teams that made it to the post season. Clearly, this is an area New West must address in the off season and at the 2016 draft. But Ross maintains the foundation is there for another push for the Mann Cup similar to that in the late 2000s, when the Salmonbellies went to three consecutive

Minto Cup tied after two

Canadian senior A championship finals from 2008 to 2010. “I think this team is somewhat following the same path we took. The potential is there,” Ross said. “They’re bringing the experience we need to push this team.” Victoria will now await the winner of the Ontario Major Series league between Peterborough and Six Nations.

The Minto Cup turned into a best-of-five series following a 9-8 overtime win over the Coquitlam Adanacs by the Six Nations Arrows on Sunday. Goalie Christian Del Bianco was named the A’s player of the game with 48 stops. The Adanacs opened the Canadian junior A lacrosse championships with a 9-7 win last Saturday. Cole Shafer led the A’s with a game-high five-point night, including a hat trick.

BEST OF NEW WESTMINSTER

Congratulations to the Winners!

W

elcome to the 16th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards, it’s one of our highlights each and every year at The Record. As you may recall, we published ballots during the month of June and offered a $750 shopping spree at Royal City Centre as an incentive for you, the loyal reader, to cast your votes for the best in New West in 110 business categories.

While our contest does not qualify as a scientific survey, the level of participation definitely lends credibility to the outcome as do our strict rules on how we count and qualify every ballot. Each ballot must contain a minimum of 25 businesses voted upon, only one ballot is accepted per individual, and only original ballots cut out of the newspaper or entered online were counted. All other entries were disqualified. I want to offer my sincere congratulations to the businesses who received this year’s Readers’ Choice Award. They are all deserving of our recognition as The Best in New West. But please don’t just take our word for it; visit as many of the winning businesses listed in this special feature and decide for yourself. The Record would like to congratulate this year’s winner of the Royal City Centre Shopping Spree, Roger Schwuchow. We also sincerely thank all of you who participated and entered this year’s contest and we look forward to counting your votes next year.

Mid Century Modern Home VINTAGE

B

lessed with a keen eye for interior design and for unearthing fabulous quality vintage finds, savvy businesswoman/ entrepreneur Jenny Cashin opened the doors to a distinctive furnishings store unlike anything New Westminster had seen before. “In a way, my work is a combination of excavation and rescue--unearthing the hidden gems that have often been poorly treated, and rescuing them from the landfill with a multi-talented team that has the passion and skills to reconstruct, restore and sometimes even resurrect pieces and bring them back to be appreciated and loved again.”

Fast forward six+ years, Mid-Century Modern HOME is where discerning clientele from across the Lower Mainland come to discover that perfect find. This unique boutique features a beautifully curated collection of Danish Modern teak and rosewood furniture and lighting from the 50s and 60s that has been restored, refinished and reupholstered. They also have a huge selection of vintage collectables, art glass and pottery. “There’s never been a day that I regretted setting up my business in Downtown New Westminster,” Jenny explains, “The community is just amazing and the businesses supportive and forward thinking.”

Jenny also gives kudos to her great team of professionals - from the skilled trades such as her refinisher, whom she once taught but who has far surpassed her skills, to her associate who honed her refinishing skills and has become Jenny’s main furniture consigner, to her local upholsterer, w h o s e business has grown hand in hand with hers. “I believe it’s about empowering people, building collaborations with other trades and small businesses, as this work could never be done by one person alone.” Jenny recently expanded her showroom to allow more room for its ever growing collections. Drawn to an era when things were masterfully handcrafted, her customers appreciate purchases that are blessed with a “story, a legacy” spanning five, six or more decades, and yet lovingly restored to look new again. They will go on to be heirlooms handed down from generation to generation - unlike so much of the furniture sold today.

1. Music Lessons Are Number One. Do you want to learn music at a place where the music lessons are the most important thing? At Music Box Music Academy your music lessons are our business. Giving you a great learning experience is our # 1 priority. We are not a piano store or dance studio that also has music lessons, or an instrument retailer that has lessons in tiny little rooms with little or no accountability from the instructors. At Music Box our mission is providing you with a great music learning experience. 2. Free, all inclusive recitals & masterclasses! We are the only music school in New Westminster that offers not only free recitals, but also free masterclasses. Every parent just wants to know how their child is doing and if they are really progressing. The best way for a parent to understand if their investment in lessons is really worth it, is to have their child participate in a recital. In June and December many of our students choose to perform in our optional biannual recitals. For our students these recitals are free and unlike many schools, parents never have to pay recital participation or admission fees. This can only be found at Music Box.

ooking for the best pastries, cookies, cupcakes or pies in New Westminster? You’ll find it hard to avoid over-indulging at Fratelli Bakery Ltd. The award-winning artisan bakery has been serving up delicious, tempting sweets for more than 18 years in Vancouver before opening its second location in Sapperton in 2013.

ince 1991, New Westminster car owners have trusted the friendly, knowledgable staff at Hyack Tire for all of their automotive repair and tire needs.

At the helm is owner/general manager David Klassen, who received his industry education at BCIT and comes with more than 24 years of experience. Prior to purchasing the popular auto shop in September 2012, David worked as its head technician for 14 years.

The reason for its phenomenal success, says its owner Marco Cornale is that “We are a true neighbourhood bakery. I strive to always give my customers a fresh product using the best ingredients each and every time, in addition to excellence in customer service so that they come back for more.”

Every one of his highly skilled trained professionals provide the best in automotive repairs and tires, so it’s no surprise that Hyack Tire has won Reader’s Choice award every year, as well as the A-List Award for Top Mechanic and Three time Air Care Quality Repair Award.

This authentic family run Italian bakery uses original, generation-old recipes, coupled with the best ingredients possible. The result? Some of the most tantalizing pastries, breads, cookies, cupcakes, biscotti, cakes, macaroons and more this side of Italy. Marco credits much of his success to his “amazing and friendly staff who are like family to me.” “I have staff that have been with me for 18 years,” he adds. “My three daughters work in the business as well, with Bianca running my second location here in New Westminster, Gianna baking and Michela working in customer service. It has been a joy having them grow up in the business and now being such an important part of the bakery.” Over the years, Fratelli has garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious Golden Plates award, as well as a several Reader’s

Choice awards, to name a few. Marco says he is extremely grateful for the way New Westminster residents have embraced his bakery. To that end, he regularly donates all of his leftover baked goods to the New West Union Gospel Mission, United Baptist Church, after school programs at neighbouring elementary schools, as well as countless cake donations to various charities throughout the year.

“Our business is about building a trusting relationship with our customers,” says David, adding they have added initiatives to reduce their environmental footprint. He also credits his staff for Hyack Tire’s continued success. “I have a knowledgeable, hard-working and caring team who are committed to quality workmanship and service,” he adds. Keeping you safe on the road is the main goal at Hyack Tire. They make sure to provide every customer with the best for all of their auto repair needs, including auto part replacements and tires. The auto

shop utilizes computerized alignment and balancing to ensure maximum tire life for your vehicle. Turn to their licensed technicians when in need of thorough inspections, tune-ups and auto part installations. No job is too big or too small for the Hyack Tire staff. From tire replacements and oil changes to brakes and catalytic converters, its experienced mechanics offer reliable service and support. Bring your vehicle to its auto shop for any auto repair service. Meanwhile, Hyack Tire is proud to give back to the city that has supported them throughout the years. To that end, they sponsor the Hyack Football, Salmonbellies Lacrosse, New West Firefighter and the Canucks Alumni Hockey Game.

K i Sushi

45 - 8th Street, New Westminster, BC Traditional Japanese cuisine is the food - it demands the right ingredients and the freshest products, otherwise you don’t have the taste and flavours of authentic Japanese cuisine. Ki Sushi is where clean eating meets culinary artistry thanks to executive chef/ owner Joe Xu. The Ki Sushi dining experience is not only about the actual food, but also the presentation, the design, the sheer beauty of what you’re eating - where the food canvas employs colour and tantalizes all of your senses. It all happens because Joe has assembled a stellar talented team of sous chefs, who together create some of the best Japanese fare in the city. Combine that with great ambience and friendly service at reasonable prices and you have a winning recipe. Sushi purists will appreciate that its salmon sashimi is fresh, local sockeye.“Unlike many other Japanese restaurants who use farmed salmon, ours is always sockeye salmon,” says manager Helen Kwok. Since its inception more than 17 years ago, the multiple award-winning Ki Sushi keeps attracting more loyal fans for the food, excellence in customer service and overall ambience. For the 12th straight year, Ki Sushi has won, the Readers Choice Award for Best Sushi in the city. The bright, modern style 130-seat eatery might very well make you feel like you are dining in a restaurant somewhere in a major Japanese city. The contemporary décor features soft lighting, a stylish dining room, an authentic Japanese sushi bar and bamboo touches throughout. Loyal clientele come back often for signature dishes such as Nigiri, Robata, Special Sushi Rolls, Dinner Deluxe Boat (which comes with an assortment of tempura, rolls, fresh fish, Miso soup and ice cream), as well as the spicy oyster or the mango California roll, and much more.

Manager, Helen Kwok and Server, Billy

For your next party, office meeting or special occasion, Ki Sushi has a selection of five beautifully appointed private hostess rooms. The popular eatery is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information or for take out, call 604-521-1833 or visit www.kisushi.ca.
