Night at the Museum Family Sleepover Reach for the end of the earth on an overnight adventure to Antarctica! After everyone has gone home and we’ve closed the doors for the night, we invite families to join us in the Race to the End of the Earth exhibition for games, flashlight tours and an expedition. Spring Break Day Camp: Focus on Nature Aspiring shutterbugs can develop their skills by participating in a photography-inspired day camp. Campers will learn about photo composition and storytelling, venture to Beacon Hill Park to capture dynamic nature shots, and have their work included in a mini-Wildlife Photographer of the Year inspired display. No fancy camera needed, but campers need to be familiar with how their own camera works. Lunch and snacks not provided. Canada Day Old-Time Penny Carnival
RBCM Base Camp
Celebrate Canada Day with the Royal BC Museum. Bring your pennies and step right up to try your hand at an eggon-spoon race, fishing pond and other surprises. Taking place on the grounds surrounding Helmcken House and St Ann’s Schoolhouse, you can also step inside these historic buildings for more activities.
Budding adventurers will discover their inner explorer in these week long summer camps at the Royal BC Museum. In addition to learning about Race to the End of the Earth’s Scott and Amundsen’s famous expeditions, participants will also learn about modern science taking place at the pole. Campers will spend lots of time in our feature exhibition as well as getting outdoors. Secure your spot early, last year’s camps sold out. Lunch and snacks not provided.

Still Travelling: The Royal BC Museum Aliens are out there Aliens Among Us is an effort to spread the word about invasive species to all corners of the province. Douglas Treaties on Display The Significance of the Vancouver Island Treaties: The result of early encounters between Northwest Coast Native Peoples and Europeans. These treaties document the communities, land and identity of aboriginal societies at the dawn of their colonial settlement experience, less than a generation before the Indian Act, Native reserves, and residential schools. They remain bedrock for First Nations rights and title within Canadian common law. Despite their original purpose, the treaties hold the potential for constitutional reconciliation, to inspire us to recognize our diversity of cultural values in a dialogue of mutual respect.

Envisioning the World: The First Printed Maps, 1472 – 1700
Discover how over 300 years of exploration challenged the long-established visions of the world. This exhibition, drawn from the Wendt Collection and organized by the Sonoma County Museum, features more than 30 of the earliest printed maps of the world, including the first printed map, which is over 540 years old. It explores the major trends in intellectual history through the language of cartography. October 4, 2012 – January 27, 2013

For Valour – The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s) 100 Years of Service in Peace and War
Presented by the Canadian Scottish Regiment and the Royal BC Museum. This special exhibition tells the stories of The Canadian Scottish Regiment, the only infantry regiment based on Vancouver Island, through artifacts, personal accounts and archival footage. The exhibition features six Victoria Crosses, the highest military decoration for bravery and courage, as well a full dress uniform among other artifacts. October 20 – December 2, 2012

Geography, history, and war have shaped Canada’s navy through its first century of service. During this time, artists have sought to portray the navy’s diverse roles, its traditions, and its activities. Dr Noakes will discuss the importance of these works of art to our understanding of Canada’s naval history. Exhibition preview follows the presentation.

June 2013 In 2010, Shephard was the first person to attempt a solo sea kayak journey around South Georgia Island, a Sub-Antarctic Island. Documented in the movie Soul of the Sea her journey also served to raise awareness of the plight of the Albatross.

Pat Morrow, Photographer and Mountain Climber July 2013 On his way to becoming the first to climb the highest peak on all seven continents, Morrow co-founded the logistics company Adventure Network in order to get himself and subsequent adventures to Antarctica’s highest peak, Mt Vinson Massif. Gareth Wood, author South Pole: 900 Miles on Foot August 2013 Wood lived two years in a small hut in Antarctica. During that time, he and two Britons trekked 900 miles on foot to the South Pole, becoming the first in history to accomplish such a journey without support such as dog sleds or radio communications. The team was personally awarded Polar Medals by Queen Elizabeth II.

Adrian Raeside, author Return to Antarctica September 2013 Related to three members of the Scott Expedition, Raeside traveled to Antarctica in 2008 – 09 to retrace the footsteps of his grandfather, Sir Charles Wright. Jana Stefan, Conservator and Royal BC Museum Exhibit Arts Technician October 2013 Stefan has lived and worked in Antarctica for two seasons, enduring extreme living conditions in order to preserve the world’s most remote historic site, R.F. Scott’s Expedition Hut.

Two Worlds: Indigenous Media and Performance Two Worlds celebrates the intersection of tradition and technology in the work of BC First Nations artists. Tradition in Felicities Celebrating 155 years of Victoria’s Chinatown In conjunction with the Victoria Symphony, this temporary exhibition showcases Victoria Chinatown’s important role in history. On display is a Chinese Freemason’s lantern, dated between the 1910s and the 1930s, in the process of conservation work. The lantern reveals early-twentieth-century Chinese Canadian’s transnational links and sophisticated Chinese cultural upbringings. Video recordings of the elders recount life in Victoria Chinatown during the 1930s to 1950s and how Chinese New Year was celebrated back then. Videos include clips from Dr David Lai, Canada’s Mr. Chinatown, and four families who had businesses and lived in Chinatown.

E Race to the End of the Earth The race is on! In 1911, two Antarctic-bound explorers, the Englishman Robert Falcon Scott and the Norwegian Roald Amundsen, led teams through harrowing conditions against a ticking clock. Who would reach the pole first? And when they got there, could either make it back home? This new exhibition recounts one of the most stirring tales of exploration – the dramatic contest to reach the South Pole. Race to the End of the Earth brings history to life by exploring how these dangerous journeys paved the way for modern day polar research, ranging from geology to oceanography to astrophysics.

Drawing on previously published work, as well as new material from the BC Archives, from Hepburn’s own notebooks and from his relatives in Scotland, this talk will highlight the background, character, interactions and activities of this remarkable scientist. May 1, 2013 Blitzing the Flathead The Sierra Club in collaboration with our Royal BC Museum Natural History staff In August 2012, RBCM curators and collections managers joined forces with other scientists to survey and record all living species on the upper North Fork Flathead watershed. For one intensive week, the Flathead Wild team documented plants, animals, birds and some surprises!
