ADULT PROGRAMS

It’s Complicated: A Discussion Series

This participatory discussion series tackles perspectives and definitions, upending assumptions to help us better understand ourselves and our community. An intriguing mix of facilitators will get the conversation started, but where it goes from there is up to you. By donation Newcombe Conference Hall Human Remains/Cultural Belongings By the 1990s, ethical concerns regarding the care, display

and return of human remains in museum collections had grown. As a result, a new way of thinking emerged within museum cultures—changing protocols and increasing moves to repatriate Indigenous cultural remains back to ancestral lands. The Royal BC Museum has chosen to respect living cultures and beliefs by not displaying mummies in its current Egypt exhibition. Join us to discuss the often fractious nature of our human curiosity. October 18 I 5:15–7:00 pm

Unceded ‘Unceded’ is a term commonly used to describe stolen Indigenous land, an important word and concept in any colonized cultural landscape. Colonial treaties may or may not have been agreed to willingly, but they shape our lives, our lands and our relationships. This discussion will begin to explore the use of this word in the context of this particular place and space. November 14 I 5:15–7:00 pm

Museums and Classrooms Are Not Neutral Museums and classrooms are often treated as neutral spaces where we can engage with unbiased history, but they can also reinforce assumptions and prejudices. What happens when we embrace the messiness of history and question the consensus? Will questioning neutrality itself help us amplify marginalized voices? This discussion will explore these questions and more. February 15 I 7:00 – 9:00 pm

galleries as a backdrop. $99 per class Governance and Beyond Presented in partnership with the Parliamentary Education Office, this lab explores the different systems of governance, beginning with Indigenous ways of knowing and being. This day-long lab starts at the Royal BC Museum and finishes across the street at the Legislative Assembly of BC. Students will be able to experience the processes of governance from diverse perspectives and across multiple institutions. October to March

From the Beginning: Origin Stories and Indigenous Culture Presented in partnership with the University of Victoria’s Legacy Galleries, this lab will focus on alternative histories and narratives of origin. Through art and belongings, students will explore stories of connection to the earth, interconnection through families and clans, and the role of oral and visual storytelling and teachings. and biodiversity, from the Ice Age to the present day, and they are reminded that life in BC and on the planet has been shaped and changed by processes in constant motion. This tour will help students and teachers establish connections between mathematics and science and consider how these disciplines help us understand change in BC’s natural history. October to May

Gold Rush: Photography and Memory This lab will look at how we read photographs and how that process can help us better understand history. The tour will incorporate historical thinking concepts such as ‘change and continuity’ and ‘historical perspectives’. It will be presented primarily in the gold rush displays of the Becoming BC gallery. October to May

Predator versus Prey: The Case of the Cougar This lab introduces students to the predators and prey of British Columbia, with a special focus on the complicated relationship between cougars and humans. Students will discover what makes a successful hunter, how animals protect themselves from predation and how humans complicate food webs and predator-prey relationships. October to May

The Numbers of Nature “Change is the only constant in BC’s natural history.” This statement greets all visitors to the Natural History gallery, and the gallery clearly illustrates the concept. Visitors learn about mass extinctions, climate change

Exploring BC Through the Past, Present and Future This lab focuses on the curricular competencies of continuity and change, as well as historical evidence. Through your guided visit, we will be examining and handling BC artifacts, exploring

the museum and thinking about what these artifacts might be like in the future. This handson experience will appeal particularly to grades K–3. October to May Ethics: Dialogue and Debate In this lab, students will engage in ethical dialogue, using the museum’s core galleries to understand how we can make ethical decisions in our everyday lives. The focus of this lab will be on understanding ethics through discussion and debate. We may address topics like Truth and Reconciliation, pipelines, environmental stewardship and representation, in museums and beyond. October to May Simple Machines This lab is designed to introduce students to the simple machines found within the gallery. By the end of the tour, students will be able to identify the six basic simple machines, explain their uses and find them in the gallery. Students will also be able to make connections between what they have seen in the gallery and what can be found in their own classrooms and homes. October to June

The Power of Cartography: Mapping BC Maps are social constructions. They can represent power or exclusion, telling us what was significant to the people who made them. We’ll explore the many historical maps in the galleries, learning about their creators, what they included and what they excluded as we begin to inquire into the historical significance of maps in BC. October to May

Reading an Object This lab encourages students to explore the meaning and purpose behind museums. Old Town (in the Becoming BC gallery) provides a window into the past and offers an opportunity to examine which stories the museum presents and with what objects. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and think critically about the importance of heritage and the role of preservation in nurturing an understanding of the past. October to May

Helmcken Christmas This lab looks at the Christmas traditions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Using material from the Royal BC Museum and BC Archives collections, the program encourages students to explore the ways in which Christmas in Victoria (and British Columbia) was celebrated, all within the historically significant Helmcken House. Students will also have the opportunity to relive early Victorian school days in the historic St. Ann’s Schoolhouse. December The Ceremonies and Science of Seasons This lab will explore the social studies and science of the seasons with a focus on First Peoples’ perspectives. How did First Peoples view the thirteen phases of the moon in a lunar cycle? When is it safe to harvest the bark of a cedar tree? Why do frogs signify the arrival of spring? These questions and many more will be addressed in the museum’s First Peoples, Our Living Languages and Natural History galleries. Recommended for students K–3. October to May

Home Learners Series

The Archaeology of Spaces Archaeologists find and collect objects in order to learn more about past societies. But what about the spaces these objects came from? What can they tell us about their societies? And what enables structures to endure in some locations but not others? In this fall home learners block, we will explore the unique spaces left behind by the ancient Egyptians. We will examine the preservation of structures and how environmental factors impact their endurance,

especially in contrast to the conditions in other areas across the globe. Home learners will also have an opportunity to create their own space or structure that should stand the test of time. Home Is Where the Heart Is: Understanding Immigrant Experiences in British Columbia’s History This tour will explore histories of immigrant communities in British Columbia and their immense contributions to the development of the province and nation. Uncover complicated narratives of settlement, intercultural communication and historical wrongdoings represented (or not) in the museum’s galleries. We’re All in This Together: Biodiversity of BC in a Changing World BC is home to an incredible abundance of plants and animals, but why do we have a wider variety here than in other parts of Canada or the world? During this tour we will explore the reasons why BC has such exceptional biodiversity and how our quickly changing planet will continue to impact that diversity. Embracing both scientific and cultural perspectives, we will examine the myriad ways biodiversity is important to us as humans and how changes to global ecology will resonate in our everyday lives.

Many years ago, a young man set out on a voyage through the mountains but failed to reach his destination. The discovery of the Kwädąy Dän Ts’ìnchį man raised many questions but his remains, preserved in glacial ice, offered answers, too. This comprehensive collaboration describes not only a portrait of an individual and his world, but also how diverse ways of knowing can complement each other to provide new understanding of our complex histories.
