Welcome to the 2nd edition of 2010. Here is a brief update on “what’s happening”. HVAC Project—3N
•
Although you can’t see much as most of the project is taking place behind the scenes, the project is under way (really!). The roof area is still being structurally upgraded to take the weight of the new HVAC units. The welding work and fire watch is taking place after hours. Very soon, holes will be cut into the roof to ready for some concrete curbing . On May 16, 2010, 11 pieces of HVAC equipment, weighing approximately >13,154 kgs (29,000 lbs—yes 29,000 lbs!) will be lifted by heli-

The recycled crushed marble is slowing turning to sand… and is the wrong pH for the trees that like an acidic environment so it is being removed, taken to a landscape yard to be used as fill (recycled for the 2nd time!), and will be replaced with mulch.

copter onto the roof. A BIG Russian Kamov supplied by Vancouver Island Helicopters (stationed in beautiful Sidney, BC) will be hovering approximately ~60-76 metres (200 to 250 feet) in the air !. This well coordinated lift entails road closures, traffic control, a noise bylaw exemption, an emergency landing location, & Transport Canada approval.

Much of the work is behind the scenes in electrical rooms, electrical vault and basement areas while other work is very noticeable —like the very large 7.6 metre (25 foot) deep hole! Soon it will be a concrete bunker housing the emergency generators.
once the concrete that is being poured for the concrete bunker has cured.

( CON ’ T ) What else is new and other “Stuff”: Landscaping improvements, are continuing—more plants and more mulch—native and drought resistant wherever possible.
THE BIG HOLE SOON TO BE GENERATOR ROOM!
The student lunchroom has been transformed with paint, new flooring and a recycling centre —so take a peek…... Speaking of a recycling centre, we just installed a new recycling centre there too! New garbage and recycling containers are now in the lobby too. If you haven’t already noticed, the H-way has had a face lift as well—the new flooring installed at the beginning of March has now been sealed. Are you wondering why there is 76 cms (30”) of rubber (going from a dark colour to a lighter shade) at the top of the stairs on the H-way? This is a new accessibility requirement so people with mobility and vision issues know there is a step coming up by the transition in material and the colour change.

What the heck is that thing you ask???
This is a Dyson Airblade and they are just being installed in the Exhibition public washrooms. According to the Dyson Airblade brochure, the airblade dries your hands in just 12 seconds—scraping water from hands like a wind-
shield wiper. It is more energy efficient as there is no energy-hungry heating element to power. Less energy means lower running costs. Water is removed from hands using a sheet of air travelling at 640 kms/h. It’s hygienic too as air passes through a HEPA filter before air is blown on your hands. We still have some “turn it off” or “turn off the lights” stickers, so if you’d like one… come and see us.
Tip of the day….. the best way to save money when it comes to water use is simply to reduce the amount of water you use!
Don’t forget, join Team Power Smart (it’s free to sign up!) and they always have lots of tips and other useful information—only a few clicks on the keyboard away! http://www.bchydro.com According to our partner, BC Hydro, home cooling can account for a high summertime energy use. Did you know that you can meet most cooling needs with passive techniques that don’t require ongoing energy use. As summer is nearly upon us, consider these BC Hydro Cooling Guide tips (which you also find on their website): •
Use internal blinds and drapes—they can block up to 65% of the heat that would otherwise come through you windows.
•
Plant a deciduous shade tree—well designed landscaping can minimize summer heat gain in your home.
