HVAC Project

The HVAC project in the First Peoples Gallery is well underway and is approximately 85% complete. The units on the roof have been installed, connected and have been turned on. Commissioning to ensure the units are working as intended is now underway and is expected to be completed
Electrical Upgrade •

The electrical upgrade project is also about 85% complete. Only a few more power outages to contend with (sorry about that—the ice wall will again need repair by our ever so clever Exhibition Technicians!). Those big holes for the

There is some additional structural upgrade work that still needs to be completed so there will be some more welding work taking place in the attic space on the 3rd floor. The great news is that the capital project is on time and on budget! Once the project is completed, the First Peoples Gallery, similar to the 2nd floor temporary gallery, will have better temperature and relative humidity control to protect and preserve the collections.

Kudos to Tanya Duce who is coordinating both the HVAC and Electrical projects and is keeping the many contractors on track and making every effort to minimize disruption to you and our visitors. Not an easy task with the magnitude of the construction that has to take place! :)
The emergency generators (they are large aren’t they!) are scheduled to be tested and commissioned in mid-November. Unfortunately during the start up and testing, it means that there will be a large test bank on site to run the Gensets for long periods of time— there will some loud noises.

GENERATOR ROOM OR ELECTRICAL PROJECTS!
The fire suppression project is now underway. Human History, Conservation and many volunteers have been busy packing up the house and the cupboards are now bare as the fire suppression work begin the week of November 15th. We are busy trying to get water to St. Ann’s—which is proving to be an interesting task as you can tell by the missing section of fence and the hole in the ground. What else is new and other “Stuff”: Steve Brame and Ron McDermid have joined the Black & McDonald (B&M) team. Next time you see them, stop and say hi. They should be wearing their new shirts soon!
O THER B EHIND THE SCENES …. P LANTER AND RAILING
Landscaping improvements, are continuing—more plants and more mulch—native and drought resistant wherever possible. Native plants are also being relocated from the Native plant garden and being planted in the new planters that are over the generator room The new recycling centre and compost centres in the Café and Student lunchroom are working out well. We can all do our part though and continue to use the recycling bins.

I know we sound like a broken record… but if you use the lunchroom, please remember to do your own dishes, wipe your own snack and lunch crumbs, swipe down the microwave when your food splatters all over, and label and date your food (as the fridges are now being cleaned out weekly and anything that is not labeled will be thrown out!).
Don’t forget, join Team Power Smart (it’s free to sign up!) and they always have lots of guides and in-depth tips and other useful information—only a few clicks on the keyboard away!
T IP OF THE DAY ….. THE BEST WAY TO SAVE MONEY WHEN IT COMES TO WATER USE IS SIMPLY TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF WATER YOU USE !
http://www.bchydro.com According to our partner, BC Hydro, there are many ways to shrink your energy bills. You can draftproof your home where you feel cold air coming in; manage your thermostat—heat your home strategically!; shade your windows from heat loss; maintain your heating (and cooling) equipment; add or upgrade your insulation (you can find them on their website). Some other BC Hydro tips to consider: •
Look for the Energy Star symbol when choosing electronics appliances— and use as much as 50% less energy.
•
Don’t idle, turn off your car when idling for more than 10 seconds.
Ho, ho, ho!!.... (yes… it is that time of year again!!) Consider using seasonal LED (“SLED”) lights for the upcoming festive seasons… which will be upon us sooner than you think! Per BC Hydro’s key Power Smart SLED messaging is that: SLED uses 95% less energy, better for the environment and your wallet (75 incandescent bulbs use the same energy as 9240 LED bulbs!); SLED’s last up to 10 times longer; they are more durable with no filaments or glass to break; and they produce no heat which reduces the risk of fire.

If you get any queries about our gallery event rentals (and we have a special Christmas reduced rate from for the Modern History Gallery from Nov 15 to Saturday, Dec 18th) rate , Judith, (Queen of Gallery Rentals!) is available— call 250-387-5745. C AN YOU FIND YOUR FLASHLIGHT ?
Most power outages are over as soon as they begin, but some can last longer. The best advice is to be prepared for at least 72 hours with an emergency kit or at least have some items that are easy to find such as: •
Water - at least 2L of water per person per day
•
Ready to eat food like energy bars, dried food,
•
Wind up or battery powered flashlight and radio (and extra batteries)
•
Sleeping bag or blanket
•
Change of clothes and footwear, gloves
•
First aid kit and medications
