The theme of this issue is gratitude; heartfelt thanks and appreciation for our donors who have made so many wonderful projects come to life this year. We celebrated the re-opening of Helmcken House and St Ann’s Schoolhouse with new interpretation and state of the art fire suppression systems – a result of our generous donor community. At the same time, we recently launched a campaign to raise funds for a travelling exhibition, which opened in Parksville with great fanfare! It has now begun its tour around the province, thanks to our generous supporters.
Thank you to our Donors and Supporters

I have made a personal decision to make more time in my life for my family and to explore a career as an independent businesswoman providing consulting services to the not-for-profit sector. I am grateful for the time I have had here at the Royal BC Museum, working with a wonderful family of dedicated professionals. I look forward to joining all of you as a dedicated donor and member of this great organization.

The Other Emily: Redefining Emily Carr
• 20 original framed works of art by Emily Carr, including renowned artworks Tanoo (1913), Sea and Sky (1936), and Sombreness Sunlit (1937). • One painting, Church of Our Lord, (ca. 1895), will be on public display for the first time. It was recently acquired by the Royal BC Museum and is one of Carr’s earliest known works. • 22 original archival Carr documents, including her letters, a sketchbook, drawings, manuscripts, pottery, and her sister’s diary. • 20 rare photographic images of the young Emily Carr. • 18 new works by contemporary artist Manon Elder.
If you haven’t been to the museum recently to view this wonderful exhibition, we encourage you to see, The Other Emily: Redefining Emily Carr, which opened on March 2. Drawing on the Royal BC Museum’s vast Carr collection, The Other Emily is the first major exploration of the artist’s early life prior to her breakthrough as a key creative force in Canada. It’s a very unique exhibition that we’re particularly proud of as it includes works by Emily Carr that have not previously been on exhibit. As you may know, the Royal BC Museum and Provincial Archives holds the biggest collection of Carr’s literary papers and manuscripts with thousands of her sketches and drawings. No other institution has such a diverse or rich collection of Carr materials. It is with great pride that we share this now through a special collaboration between Manon Elder, a contemporary artist, and our very own curator, Kathryn Bridge, who have been working since 2009 to bring this project together. The exhibition looks at the artist and her life from all sides, combining largescale portraits of a young Emily by contemporary artist Manon Elder alongside Carr’s own paintings. The exhibition closes on October 10 of this year.

Helmcken House and St Ann’s Schoolhouse Reopen to the Public! Thank you. It is with sincere gratitude that we recognize you, our donors who have raised $350,000 to preserve two precious historic buildings – Helmcken House and St Ann’s Schoolhouse. Because of your generous philanthropy, these houses and the artifacts and memories they contain are safe. On the sunny afternoon of May 19 in Elliot Square, donors, special guests and staff celebrated the reopening and were able to view the state-of-the-art fire suppression system. Royal BC Museum staff had taken the opportunity to refresh the houses, including 350 objects such as Dr. Helmcken’s surgical kits, framed photographs, and a nun’s habit from the Sisters of St Ann’s collection. The houses have new interpretation panels, a unique fire suppression system, and a refurbished interior and exterior, including viewing panels to see the original structures. Updates to these historically rich properties allow more room to show BC’s incredible collections in their original settings. In addition, a life-sized statue of Dr. John S. Helmcken (a statesman who helped negotiate the entry of British Columbia into Canada and the first resident of Helmcken House) was also unveiled. The statue was created by local artists Armando Barbon and Gabriele Vicari, and was donated to the museum by the family of Yole and Armando Barbon. Please come by and see the houses and statue. Helmcken House and St Ann’s Schoolhouse are open from May 20 to September 6, 2011 from noon to 4 pm daily. Admission is by donation or included with a same-day museum admission or museum membership.

Armando Barbon Armando Barbon was born in Treviso, Italy. After starting a successful plumbing business in the town of Spresiano, he had the opportunity to emigrate from Italy to Canada with his wife and children. After his retirement from running a successful business in Victoria, Armando went to Italy to study voice. One fateful day he couldn’t take his lessons due to a throat problem and found himself wandering around Florence. The sculptures intrigued him and an old dream resurfaced. He met with the resident sculptor and professor, Romano Lucacchini from the Academy of Art in Florence and persuaded him to take on a private student. From then on he devoted his time to his studies. He returned four times to Pietrasanta, the world centre of sculpture, to study and work with various artists. However, being away from the family for months at a time was very difficult. Armando thus began his studio back in Victoria. Studio 37 is now well equipped to proceed with his creations both in bronze and marble, and is where he also hosts many visiting artists with whom he collaborates on various projects.

Exhibition Focus The intent of this travelling exhibition is to help British Columbians reach new perspectives on introduced or exotic species, how they get here and the impact they have on ecosystems in BC. Ultimately, we hope that visitors will leave armed with new knowledge about the impact of exotic life-forms and what each of us can do to protect our natural heritage. The exhibition is comprised of 33 mini dioramas presented in seven display cases. It is complemented with freestanding interpretive panels that provide information about how invasive species get here and what people can do to help protect BC biodiversity. As a touring exhibition it is designed with flexibility in mind to allow it to fit into a variety of space configurations and sizes. The exhibition is also supported by an Aliens Among Us website funded through a Virtual Museums of Canada grant.
Where the past lives.
Aliens Among Us – Report to Donors This past fall we raised the concern about the growing problem of invasive species in British Columbia. With the help of the biologists and curators of the Royal BC Museum, we started a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of preventing the spread of invasive species and protecting the province’s biodiversity by launching a unique outreach project called Aliens Among Us. Aimed at educating all British Columbians, especially children and families, this project includes an exhibition that will travel throughout BC, an interactive website, and the development and creation of teacher guides, as well as community visits by Royal BC Museum curators. To make this project a reality, the Royal BC Museum needed to raise $250,000 to package and transport the exhibition and create all necessary educational tools to bring this initiative right into people’s communities. We needed the support of the public and we approached all of our loyal supporters to help make this project a success. There was an amazing response to our fundraising campaign and we are thrilled to share the news that the Aliens Among Us Travelling Exhibition has launched! We can’t thank you enough for all the support you have shown and encourage you to see this travelling exhibition when it visits your community.
