Since 1886 the museum has collected, protected and shared the human and natural histories of BC. In 1987, “Royal” status was bestowed upon the British Columbia Provincial Museum.

Thunderbird Park

In 1941, Thunderbird Park opened to the public with the first official collection of intricately carved and deeply storied totem poles. Many of the original poles – now preserved in storage – represent First Nations communities across BC.

Who We Are: Staff Profile Melissa Frey Melissa is one of the new faces at the museum, having joined the natural history team in August, 2010 as Curator of Invertebrates. Melissa had quite the route getting here. She grew up in Ohio, completed her Masters degree at SUNY Stony Brook in New York, lived in Barbados, worked for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, and carried out her PhD at the University of California Davis – all before finally landing in Victoria. It’s a good fit according to Melissa, “Victoria is the perfect size, it’s a great community and I feel very fortunate to be here.” When she isn’t studying molluscs or teaching children about invertebrates, she likes hiking, tide pooling, taking photos, or paddling on the water. She’s even joined an outrigger canoe team “to become part of the community and to meet people with different interests.”
