This poem titled In Flanders Fields was written by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, inspired by his service during the 2nd Battle of Ypres. The fields were left unmaintained for years before they were made into a proper memorial. Today Flanders Fields is home to thousands of poppies.

What was the

Great War? It has been one hundred years since World War One began. The Great War, also known as World War One (WWI), is known as the Great War due to the number of people and countries involved. The war began when the heir to the throne of AustroHungary, Archduke, Francis Ferdinand, was assassinated by Serbian militants who wanted independence. War with Serbia triggered a cascade of complicated nation to nation defense treaties across Europe. The treaties required countries to rapidly mobilize armies on preplanned invasions. War quickly spread across Europe and then globally. Canadian soldiers were initially eager to participate and considered going to war to be an exciting adventure. The war lasted almost five years and millions of soldiers came from all over the world to fight. More than 15 million people were killed and 20 million people were wounded. The armistice, a legal agreement to stop fighting, was signed by the Allies and Germany in a railway car in the forest at Compiègne. By agreement all fighting ended at 11 am Paris time on 11 November 1918. This is why Remembrance Day ceremonies are held at that exact time every year. To commemorate the Great War (1914–18), the Royal BC Museum produced an installation in Clifford Carl Hall called British Columbia Remembers: The Great War. You’ll continue to find additional exhibits and online content commemorating WWI at the Royal BC Museum until 2018.
