2013 marks the centenary of RCM alumnus Benjamin Britten (19131976), one of the great composers of the twentieth century and one of the most important figures in the history of British music.

This autumn at the RCM you can explore the Britten exhibition in our Museum of Music (see below), enjoy days devoted to his songs, solo works and chamber music, and revel in two major orchestral works: his joyous Spring Symphony and youthful Sinfonia da Requiem, brought vividly to life by visiting conductors David Hill and John Wilson. We finish – appropriately for the place where the young Britten was a pupil – with performance of his Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra by the RCM Philharmonic.

The RCM Museum of Music’s special exhibition marks the centenary of Britten, who came to study at the RCM in 1930. It was here that he completed some of his early masterpieces, including his Sinfonietta op 1, which you can hear performed in our Britten Theatre on Tuesday 19 November. This exhibition, curated by the RCM’s resident Britten expert Professor Paul Banks, explores Britten’s time at the RCM, as well as his enduring legacy.

The RCM offers a range of pre-performance and interval refreshments and a selection of light snacks for those attending evening events in the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall and the Britten Theatre. These are served between 6.00pm and 9.00pm (5.00pm for early evening performances) in the Britten Theatre Bar or the RCM Foyer Bar.

The RCM Museum of Music is open Tuesday to Friday (11.30am – 4.30pm) and is free to visit.

ACCESS

Road There is metered parking on Prince Consort Road and the surrounding area. It costs £3 per hour for a maximum of three hours and is free after 6.30pm and on Sundays.

The RCM has easy access to most areas and is fully accessible via lifts and ramps. Guide and companion dogs may be taken anywhere on site. For more information go to www.rcm.ac.uk/visit

There are some disabled parking spaces on Prince Consort Road and Exhibition Road. There are designated motorbike bays in the area surrounding the Royal Albert Hall.

Britten’s String Quartets

These two days celebrate the life and work of Benjamin Britten. Day one focuses on his music for woodwind, and concludes with Britten’s first published work: his Sinfonietta, completed while he was a student at the RCM. Day two – on the exact date of Britten’s 100th birthday – features songs, solos and chamber music performed by the superb young musicians of the Royal College of Music.

We present two concerts celebrating the captivating chamber music of Benjamin Britten.

Our Thursday evening orchestral concert series continues with an enormous treat, in the shape of a visit from RCM favourite John Wilson. He presents three strikingly different works all written in New York state in 1940, including Britten’s masterfully orchestrated declaration of pacifism.

Conducted by one of the world’s pre-eminent choral directors, the RCM Symphony Orchestra and Chorus bring to life one of Britten’s most extraordinary, colourful and vibrant works, which climaxes with a gloriously raucous rendition of the traditional English song, Sumer is icumen in. There are some disabled parking spaces on Prince Consort Road and Exhibition Road. There are designated motorbike bays in the area surrounding the Royal Albert Hall.

A celebration of the centenary of the birth of one of the RCM’s most celebrated alumni, Benjamin Britten.

Bus Buses 9, 10, 52 and 452 pass the Royal Albert Hall, the 9a runs from Palace Gate, and the 70 comes along Queen’s Gate. The 360 stops directly outside the RCM on Prince Consort Road.
