WELCOME
WELCOME TO THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC’S AUTUMN SEASON This season, in the anniversary year of the Armistice, John Wilson conducts Vaughan Williams’ poignantly reflective Pastoral Symphony as part of our moving Passing Youth series. We also remember former RCM Director Sir Hubert Parry in a concert which brings together choristers from the schools – Eton and Twyford – that he attended. Elsewhere, the music of Lili Boulanger, who died tragically 100 years ago, features alongside Fauré’s masterpiece, Requiem, led by Jac van Steen. Our Orchestral Masterworks series continues with performances of Shostakovich, Berlioz and Elgar, and we also see the return of members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, who will perform Brahms side-by-side with RCM performers. There are many treats for chamber music fans too including a new feature on Haydn’s opus 33 quartets throughout the year. And we continue to celebrate our glorious Flentrop Organ with a new rush-hour series, Bach Bites. This autumn we're also delighted to welcome back our Quartet in Residence, the Harlem Quartet, who will contrast Haydn with more of their inimitable arrangements from the jazz world. And there are further jazz delights on offer in November with the return of Mike Lovatt and the Big Fat Brass project. Our festival programme, meanwhile, includes the highly popular International Festival of Viols, featuring Vittorio Ghielmi, while our Guitar Festival promises an international line up including John Williams and Xue Fei Yang. We also look forward to visits from Maxim Vengerov, Alina Ibragimova, Steven Osborne, Thomas Trotter, Sir James Galway and more to lead our autumn masterclasses. Finally, we round off the year with a very special and truly unmissable event – Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, directed by Sir Thomas Allen. The combination of Mozart’s perfectly sublime and witty opera, seen through the eyes of RCM alumnus and one of the greatest opera performers of our time, promises to be a truly unforgettable occasion. We look forward to welcoming you here. Stephen Johns, Artistic Director 020 7591 4314 / www.rcm.ac.uk/events

Professor Terence Charlston (Chair of Historical Keyboard Instruments) The performance of counterpoint has always fascinated keyboard players, and the 17th-century virtuoso Froberger appears to have shared this enthusiasm. These works provided the inspiration for Debussy’s song cycle, Ariettes oubliées (Forgotten Songs), based on poems by Paul Verlaine. Xavier Bray, curator of The Wallace Collection, joins Professor Richard Langham Smith and RCM singers to explore the paintings, the poems and the music.
