WELCOME TO A NEW AUTUMN SEASON AT THE RCM! A rich variety of music and events feature this autumn at the Royal College of Music, reflecting the vibrant and multi-faceted culture that you can experience here. A number of themes run through the programmes, including a focus on Beethoven and Richard Strauss. Contemporary music features highly, and we are delighted to be welcoming Steve Reich to a concert of his music in our Britten Theatre, and the conferment of an honorary doctorate. Brett Dean, as our composer in residence, leads programmes of contemporary music from his homeland. Other special concerts include a performance of Michael Gordon's Timber with PERC'M and the Aurora Orchestra, iconic works by Stockhausen, Cage and Varèse, and the remarkable music of Romitelli. The life hereafter is thrillingly evoked in Mahler's great ‘Resurrection’ Symphony, and we welcome back RCM alumnus Andrew Gourlay to lead our Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Also featuring in this concert is the music of William Lloyd Webber, former student and composition professor at the Royal College of Music, in this his anniversary year. Themes of death and resurrection also feature in the RCM Chamber Choir's diverse programme, ‘Paradise’. We introduce a new series this autumn, Chamber Essentials, featuring classic works from the repertoire. And we bring new insights into Beethoven's celebrated op 131 string quartet in an innovative performance led by cellist Richard Lester. There is a further focus in String Week, with Pinchas Zukerman, the RCM String Band and the welcome return of the String Quartet Collective. Historical Performance is one of the cornerstones of our programmes, and we are delighted to host both Vittorio Ghielmi and the viol consort Fretwork once again at the International Festival of Viols, now in its eighth successful year. We are also pleased to welcome our ensemble in residence, Florilegium, to a concert of Bach, Rebel, Marais and Telemann in the intimate surroundings of the Britten Theatre. Masterclasses from Sarah Connolly, Emanuel Ax and Julian Lloyd Webber; a day of discovery of Richard Strauss songs; a celebration of Great British Dance Bands; and to round off the year, Mozart's fabulous opera of love and symbolism, The Magic Flute. These and many more are the highlights of our autumn season, and we look forward to welcoming you.

DIARY RCM War Memorial
TUESDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2014 – FRIDAY 27 MARCH 2015
The RCM and WW1 RCM Museum of Music
To mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, this special exhibition in the RCM Museum of Music pays tribute to the work of RCM students and staff during those years. Many RCM students enlisted: some, such as Butterworth, did not return; others, such as Gurney, never recovered from their experiences. Happily, many others did come back to forge musical careers. The exhibition also highlights other war work, from nursing to fundraising and charitable concerts held at home and abroad, and shows how life went on at the RCM during the war years. The RCM Museum of Music is open Tuesday to Friday (11.30am – 4.30pm) and is free to visit. www.rcm.ac.uk/museum

Beethoven and the Secret Life of the String Quartet 7.30pm
Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall
Adrian Bradbury speaker Richard Lester cello RCM String Quartets Beethoven String Quartet in C sharp minor op 131 This fascinating event promises to shed light on the innermost workings of the string quartet. In the first half, Adrian Bradbury explains how musicians in a quartet make millisecond timing corrections to stay together. Analysis of these adjustments reveals the group’s hierarchy, with ‘followers’ adjusting to ‘leaders’. After the interval find out how this translates into performance, as four string quartets come together for a performance of Beethoven’s late String Quartet in C sharp minor, led by cellist Richard Lester. Steve Reich Clapping Music Double Sextet Different Trains We’re delighted to announce that this autumn Steve Reich himself will be visiting the RCM. On Sunday 12 October at the Southbank Centre, the Colin Currie Group will be giving the world premiere of Reich’s Quartet for 2 vibraphones & 2 pianos. Ahead of this performance, Reich will be our very special guest at the RCM on Wednesday 8 October for a celebration of his life and work.
Ivan Hewett, The Daily Telegraph
To start proceedings, Steve Reich will be awarded the rare and prestigious accolade of an honorary doctorate from the RCM, recognising his outstanding contribution to international musical life. He will then join forces with RCM Head of Percussion David Hockings – who as principal percussionist with the London Sinfonietta has worked with Reich many times – for a performance of the iconic Clapping Music. The concert also features Grammy Award-winning Different Trains – Reich’s ground-breaking and often haunting combination of recorded voices, sound effects and live music – and his exuberant 2007 work Double Sextet, winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Music. 1.15pm
To open our autumn orchestral season the RCM Philharmonic presents a not-to-be-missed programme of two of Mendelssohn’s most sublime works: his atmospheric ‘Fingal’s Cave’ seascape, famously inspired by the composer’s 1829 trip to the Scottish Isles, and his exquisite Violin Concerto in E minor – the final large orchestral work he wrote in his short life. To perform what is widely considered to be one of the greatest violin concertos of all time will be violinist Naoka Aoki, winner of the RCM’s Concerto Competition for a second year. Opening the concert is the brooding Egmont overture by one of Mendelssohn’s greatest musical influences, Beethoven.

Scored for the huge forces of orchestra, chorus and two vocal soloists, the symphony takes audiences on an epic musical and spiritual journey in the course of its five contrasting movements: a funeral march; a simple folk dance; a dramatic scherzo; a song; and the choral finale, featuring the words “Rise again, yes, rise again!” The symphony is preceded by an enormous treat: a rare performance of the sensuous tone poem Aurora by William Lloyd Webber, former student and professor at the RCM, whose centenary we are celebrating this year. An Australian Abroad: Brett Dean in Residence Conductor, composer, violist… This autumn we’re thrilled to welcome the multi-talented Brett Dean to the RCM for a very special series of events. Dean himself has curated three concerts, showcasing more than a century of Australian music, from Percy Grainger’s whimsical 1902 work for three pianists seated at one piano, right through to James Ledger’s 2011 heartfelt tribute to Anton Webern and John Lennon. Also including some of Dean’s very own captivating compositions, this festival promises to be a highlight of the London autumn season.

“Michael Rosewell and the student orchestra produced one of the best all-round orchestral Mozart performances I’ve heard anywhere for a long time, and six assured young singers struck sparks off each other in an intelligent, observant and good-looking production.” – Opera Now on the RCM’s production of Così fan tutte One of the best-loved works in the operatic repertoire makes a welcome return to the RCM. The power struggle between Sarastro and The Queen of the Night and the trials and tribulations of Tamino, Pamina and Pagageno are illuminated by some of Mozart’s most enchanting music, which never fails to delight. Previous RCM productions of Die Zauberflöte have featured the likes of Janis Kelly, Rosemary Joshua, Andrew Kennedy and, most recently, Sarah-Jane Brandon. Find out which of this year’s group of talented performers will join them on the road to operatic stardom. Tickets: £10, £20, £30, £40, £50 Available from Wednesday 8 October. Nicholas Moroz and Arne Gieshoff directors Romitelli Professor Bad Trip "Ever since I was born, I have been immersed in digitalised images, synthetic sounds, artefacts. Artificial, distorted, filtered – this is the nature of man today" – Fausto Romitelli Taking its title from the stage name of Italian artist Gianluca Lerici and inspired by the hallucinatory writings of Henri Michaux, Fausto Romitelli’s Professor Bad Trip stands as a 40-minute kaleidoscopic dream sequence, a phantasmal ceremony that fuses two ostensibly unrelated sound worlds: the electric guitar of psychedelic rock and the modernism of Franco Donatoni and Gérard Grisey. On the 10th anniversary of Romitelli’s tragic early death, join explorensemble in a celebration of his life and work, as the concert space becomes a portal to strange, hallucinatory worlds… Tickets: £5

SUPPORT THE FUTURE OF MUSIC – SUPPORT THE RCM The RCM is one of the world’s leading conservatoires. Generations of gifted students from around the world have been guided and inspired to develop their musical potential within the RCM’s stimulating creative environment. In order to sustain the provision of the highest levels of training and performance opportunities to our students – whatever their financial means – we rely heavily on the support of individuals, companies and charitable trusts. There are many ways you can get involved and support our work, including the RCM Patron Scheme, Scholarship Fund and donations towards our learning and participation programme RCM Sparks. Every gift to the RCM helps to transform the lives of talented young musicians, and all supporters are invited to see at first hand what a difference their support makes. Please join us.
