From the Director On behalf of the Council, staff and students of the Royal College of Music, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2017 Graduation Ceremony. For those of you here to receive awards or to support friends or members of your family, I hope that this will be an occasion that you will remember with pleasure and pride. I believe that each RCM graduate has a particular responsibility to be an advocate for music. Wherever your career takes you, I want you to be inspired by what you have learned and experienced here. The power of music has long been understood. As Plato recognised more than 2,500 years ago: ‘Musical training is a more potent instrument than any other, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul.’ Music does indeed change the way we see the world and influence how we behave. For musicians, therefore, though the responsibility is great, the possibilities are thrilling, and the rewards infinite. Those graduating today join generations of gifted students who have forged their creative careers at the RCM. This list includes some of the most distinguished figures in British music history: Sir Thomas Allen, Sophie Bevan, Benjamin Britten, Dame Sarah Connolly, Sir Colin Davis, Gervase de Peyer, Sir James Galway, Alina Ibragimova, Jonathan Lemalu, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Elizabeth Watts, Julian Lloyd Webber and John Wilson. Our students are members of the College and this membership does not cease at graduation. You have now become part of one of the most prestigious alumni communities in the world. The RCM network will stand you in good stead in your career, and I hope you will remain proud of that association. Please keep in touch and remember to mention the RCM in your biographies. We will look back with pleasure on the ways in which you have contributed to the life of the College during your student days here: we hope that you will want to do the same.

RCM Music Excellence Award To a student at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts: Tan Li Shan

Scholarships Since its foundation in 1882 the Royal College of Music has awarded scholarships to help cover the cost of tuition fees and enable generations of gifted students to forge their creative careers at the RCM. Scholarships are awarded by the Director at the start of the academic year on the grounds of talent, potential and musical ability. The RCM remains committed to its founding principles: that those with talent should have the opportunity to study with us regardless of their means. Currently more than 55% of students receive financial support through scholarships and awards, and the College has ambitious plans to increase this to 75% over the next five years. The RCM is grateful to all individuals, organisations, companies and charitable trusts who support our scholars, and would like to thank in particular those who have supported many of the students graduating today in the following named scholarships and awards:
