WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC’S SPRING SEASON From colourful orchestral concerts to toe-tapping operetta, we have a wonderful range of performances in store this spring. In January, Rafael Payare returns to the RCM to lead a magnificent programme of Skryabin and Strauss, whose Ein Heldenleben is a vast orchestral tapestry charting our hero’s life and loves. There is further storytelling this season with Stravinsky’s Firebird, Dvořák’s The Noon Witch and the epic Taras Bulba by Janáček, while our Wind Orchestra brings John Adams’ minimalist masterpiece, Grand Pianola Music, to life. Then, in March, conductor and violinist Thomas Zehetmair joins us for a rich programme of Mozart and Dvořák. Our annual keyboard festival, Clara’s Circle, displays the wide influence of Clara Schumann on the composers of her time. Women composers are further celebrated when Dr Angela Slater brings her touring concert, Illuminate, to the RCM in February. Then, on International Women’s Day, don’t miss a concert dedicated to a host of female RCM composers, from Elizabeth Lutyens to Anna Meredith. Chamber music is at the heart of our programming. We continue our Essential Haydn series, welcome the return of the Harlem Quartet as part of our Chamber Music Festival and look forward to a rousing performance of Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn directed by Roger Vignoles. This season we also celebrate the recently donated Milein Cosman collection with an evening of music and art, and delve into works by the wider Bach family in our annual cantatas concert. Maxim Vengerov, Gerald Finley, Stefan Dohr and Edith Wiens are just some of the internationally renowned musicians giving masterclasses this spring, and don’t miss our experimental collaborative performance of Otis and Eunice, which will be enjoyed simultaneously in London and Bristol. Finally, to round off the season, we present Offenbach’s hilarious take on the story of Robinson Crusoe, with a large cast intent on rescuing our unfortunate castaway. We look forward to welcoming you here. Stephen Johns, Artistic Director 020 7591 4314 / www.rcm.ac.uk/events

Offenbach’s light-hearted love story is loosely based on Daniel Defoe’s classic novel which celebrates its 300th anniversary this year, and is a seafaring musical adventure set against a backdrop of colonialism and cannibalism. It follows the fate of hopeless romantic Robinson, who sets sail for South America with dreams of finding a fortune for his fiancée Edwige. It’s anything but plain sailing for our hero, however, who ends up shipwrecked on a desert island. And when Edwige launches a rescue mission, she too finds herself at the mercy of pantomime pirates and waltzing cannibals. Otis and Eunice are in love. On a bright summer's morning the carnival comes to town and through the colour and the excitement, Eunice goes missing... A multi-location theatrical performance, Otis & Eunice sees six music, dance and drama institutions create a specially commissioned show curated by immersive theatre makers Raucous. Two audiences see the same story at the same time in two different cities, Bristol and London, but from very different character viewpoints. This event is the culmination of the four-year Virtual Conservatoire project between six institutions which aimed to reimagine conservatoire training for the digital age. Tickets: £8
