EVENTS AUTUMN 2017

WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC’S AUTUMN SEASON This autumn, in the centenary year of the Russian Revolution, we join with the Philharmonia Orchestra for its series Voices of Revolution: Russia 1917. Led by Vladimir Ashkenazy, our Symphony Orchestra performs at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall with a programme including Rachmaninov and Shostakovich, and to complement this, a series of themed chamber concerts illustrates the musical strands of this turbulent period of history. Sir David Willcocks was RCM Director from 1974–84, and to celebrate his life we are joined by the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, in a performance of Mozart’s Requiem. Other distinguished visitors include Maxim Vengerov, our Polonsky Visiting Professor of Violin, presenting another of his highly successful orchestral concerto masterclasses. Sir Thomas Allen CBE performs the rarely heard Richard Strauss melodrama, Enoch Arden, and there are also inspirational masterclasses from internationally renowned musicians, including Dame Gwyneth Jones, Jordi Savall, Alina Ibragimova, Stefan Dohr and Barry Douglas. A feast of orchestral performance includes Canteloube’s ravishing Chants d’Auvergne, and a showcase of Wagner’s best-known music led by our Visiting Professor of Conducting Martyn Brabbins. This year we also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the RCM Studios, including works by Tristram Cary, who set up the UK’s first conservatoire-based electronic studio. In a unique collaboration, we join with the Vienna Conservatoire for multi-site performances using live-streaming technology. The Harlem Quartet returns with a programme showing its extraordinary versatility, and with our Viol and Double Bass international festivals, the RCM Big Band and a brand-new production of Janáček’s delightful opera, The Cunning Little Vixen, there is much to enjoy for all tastes. We look forward to welcoming you. Stephen Johns Artistic Director
