EVENTS AUTUMN 2017
WELCOME
WELCOME TO THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC’S SPRING SEASON We’re delighted to announce that our beautiful Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall has a splendid new addition – an organ built by Flentrop Orgelbouw, which features throughout our performances this spring. Bernard Haitink returns to conduct Richard Strauss’ epic Alpine Symphony and Thomas Trotter gives a recital as part of our all-day Organ Festival. Martyn Brabbins conducts a Stravinsky programme, featuring vocalists from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, and Vasily Petrenko leads Stravinsky’s radical ballet Les noces at the Royal Festival Hall. Meanwhile our Orchestral Masterworks series includes Shostakovich’s Symphony no 5 and the remarkable talent of rising conductor, Holly Mathieson, in her concert of Ravel and Kodály. In the centenary year of Debussy’s death our all-day Keyboard Festival, Fin de la Belle Époque, features performances of his complete Préludes. Our Quartet in Residence, the Harlem Quartet, returns with an exciting and varied programme from Debussy to Richard Rodgers. The lighter side of music is also reflected in an unmissable French café style evening in the Britten Theatre devised by Roger Vignoles, and the groundbreaking jazz-Chopin fusion of Peter Beets with the RCM Big Band. We feature masterclasses from Polonsky Visiting Professor of Violin Maxim Vengerov, Michael Fabiano and Ton Koopman alongside Bach cantatas with the RCM Baroque Orchestra and Choir and a series of French and Russian-themed chamber concerts. Author and journalist Simon Heffer celebrates the anniversary year of Sir Hubert Parry, former Director of the RCM, in our annual Crees Lecture. Finally, we look forward to the coming summer months with performances of Benjamin Britten’s ever-magical opera, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Stephen Johns Artistic Director

Rodrigo Sones en la Giralda Brahms Variations on a Theme by Haydn op 56a Hungarian Dances nos 1, 3 and 10
Showcasing various ensembles from the RCM Brass Faculty, tonight’s concert opens with the rousing Fanfare from Janáček’s Sinfonietta. Following performances by horn, trombone and tuba ensembles in arrangements of works by Mendelssohn, Wagner, JS Bach, Beethoven, Gabrieli and Scheidt, the programme closes with a performance of Respighi’s Pines of Rome in a new arrangement for symphonic brass.
Three talented RCM conductors take to the podium for the first Orchestral Masterworks concert of the new year. Inspired by folk and gypsy cultures, Brahms’ Hungarian Dances are a tour-de-force of frenetic energy and lively, fast-paced melodies, in contrast to his serene and heartfelt theme and variations. Before this, RCM Concerto Competition winner Rosanna Rolton is the soloist for Rodrigo’s evocative Sones en la Giralda, which was originally written for RCM harp professor Marisa Robles.
