WeLCOMe tO A NeW SPRING SeASON At tHe RCM! Our sparkling spring season offers the chance to make new discoveries, or to enjoy fresh interpretations of familiar works. As always, we welcome a number of distinguished guests. Alumnus Sir Roger Norrington conducts a concert in memory of much-loved RCM Director Michael Gough Matthews, who died last year. French music was his greatest joy, and the programme celebrates this with glorious Fauré and Berlioz. Also visiting the RCM to give masterclasses are two outstanding violinists – Nicola Benedetti and Alina Ibragimova – and two of the greatest Wagner singers of our time: Sir John Tomlinson and Dame Anne Evans. And great actor Edward Fox joins RCM musicians for a unique performance of Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale. Two festivals this season offer new treats. The keyboard festival Kalinka! takes us to Russia – and promises some surprising new takes on the music of Rachmaninov and Scriabin – and there is a chance to discover the remarkable music of the Italian composer Ivan Fedele during the first ever UK festival devoted to his works. A number of important composer anniversaries are marked this year, including three in one programme by our RCM Classical Orchestra, who perform CPE Bach, Rameau and Gluck with historical techniques on modern instruments. And Richard Strauss is represented by his epic tone poem Death and Transfiguration and his beautiful Serenade, which features in our Chamber Spotlight in the Britten Theatre. We are marking another anniversary – the centenary of the outbreak of World War I – with a series of chamber music written between 1914 and 1918. And we are also exploring the musical legacy of World War II in our long-term collaborative project Singing a Song in a Foreign Land, offering a rare chance to hear some stunning music by composers displaced by the conflict. Other highlights include Bach Cantatas, another spectacular programme from Tim Reynish and the RCM Wind Orchestra, a chance to hear Varèse’s incredible percussion masterpiece Ionisation, and last but certainly not least, four performances of the opera Arianna in Crete, Handel’s sumptuous re-telling of the Greek myth of Ariadne, Theseus and the minotaur. We look forward to welcoming you. Stephen Johns | Artistic Director

SAtURDAY 22 FeBRUARY – SUNDAY 23 FeBRUARY Springboard Film Music Composition Course: Pixar in Concert 10.45am
In the 1930s, countless composers across Europe were persecuted by the Nazis and forced to flee their homelands. How did they react to relocating to another country? Did they embrace their new home, or were they overcome with nostalgia for the land of their birth? That is the focus of the RCM’s two-year project Singing a Song in a Foreign Land, led by RCM performer-researcher Norbert Meyn. Now that project comes to a climax with a concert series and three-day symposium that promise to explore these issues, and to entertain audiences by presenting some rarely heard repertoire.

Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall
The centrepiece of our festival promises a dazzling showcase of light and colour. Famously, the eccentric composer-pianist Alexander Scriabin reported that he experienced extreme synaesthesia: he associated each musical chord with a particular colour (for example, D major was golden brown). To demonstrate this to audiences, he developed his “colour-organ” – the Clavier à lumières – which projected coloured light into the concert hall. To pay tribute to this visionary composer, star RCM pianists present a unique musical marathon: all ten of Scriabin’s Piano Sonatas, interspersed with colour-inspired piano music from around the globe.
