Super String Sunday: Part One Crossing Continents Sunday 18 May 2014, 11.00am | Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall
Music is the universal language: it is the same anywhere you go in the world. Welcome to the RCM’s Super String Sunday, Crossing Continents: a celebration of things that unite us. For generations within the walls of the Royal College of Music the universal language of our humanity has been spoken; the composers – ambassadors for our human condition, and our musical family – now representing over 60 different nations – come together in common cause from across the world. In times when, despite ease of travel, technological advancement and a global marketplace, we see nations warring with nations, populations suspicious and hostile to the differences that exist within rather than seeing the similarities that abound, intolerance and prejudice. So come with us today on a musical journey today that celebrates the many different flavours that combine in this fabulous meal we will serve for you. We start here in England, and indeed with one of our own composers who honed his talents here at the RCM. Then we set our sights across the channel. We will venture across Europe, through the sunny Mediterranean countries, into Eastern Europe and then to Russia, the motherland of so much great expression of love, joy, sorrow and loss. In our trans-continental journey we also explore the Americas and we celebrate a triumphant return home with a much-heralded appearance by the internationally acclaimed Cosmopolitan String Quartet, and we end with a taster of what is in store for you if you choose to conclude your Super String Sunday experience with tonight’s wonderful Sacconi Quartet extravaganza. Enjoy your day here at the Royal College of Music! Mark Messenger Head of Strings
