SUPER STRING SUNDAY Sunday 14 May 2017, 11am | Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall Welcome to the Royal College of Music’s ever-popular annual Super String Sunday; an opportunity to see some of the world’s brightest emerging string stars in action. This year we feature the five violin concertos of Mozart, encapsulating some of the most glorious and uplifting music ever written. The RCM’s Constant and Kit Lambert Junior Fellow, Eunsley Park, has drawn together 15 amazing violinists who will each be performing one movement of the 5 concertos that Mozart composed for violin and orchestra. One interesting aspect of these performances is that each soloist has written or will improvise their own cadenzas, as would have been done in Mozart’s time. The first two concertos will be performed at 12.00pm, the 3rd and 4th at 2.00pm and the great ‘Turkish’ concerto no 5 as our grand finale at 4.00pm. Of course, throughout the day, you will be able to hear RCM students presenting the most wonderful chamber works for strings, dazzling you with their feats of virtuosity and beguiling you with their music-making. And don’t miss the opportunity to experience the extraordinary RCM Quartet in Residence, the Harlem Quartet, visiting us from New York. They performed here on Wednesday to tumultuous applause and a lot of foottapping too! Their set will start around 3.30pm; an experience not to be missed. If you can’t get enough of them, they will performing again this evening at 6.15pm in the RCM’s Britten Theatre. You will have a great time today if you stay all day, but feel free to come and go; the doors are always open. Harlem Quartet The Harlem Quartet, praised for its ‘panache’ by the New York Times, is ‘bringing a new attitude to classical music, one that is fresh, bracing and intelligent,’ says the Cincinnati Enquirer. The quartet’s mission is to advance diversity in classical music, engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire that includes works by minority composers. Since its public debut in 2006 at Carnegie Hall, the New York-based ensemble has performed in 47 out of the 50 US States, and toured throughout North and South America, Asia, Europe, and Africa. Harlem Quartet has performed with luminaries such as Itzhak Perlman, Jeremy Denk, Chick Corea, Gary Burton and Paquito D’Rivera, and in many of the world’s most prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Centre, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Japan. In 2009, they were invited by special invitation to perform for President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House. The musically versatile ensemble has also garnered an international reputation in the world of jazz having collaborated with legendary bassist Stanley Clarke at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, in addition to featured guest artist appearances at the Detroit, Miami Nice, and Panama jazz festivals. Following a concert tour of 25 major cities, Harlem Quartet’s recording with Chick Corea and Gary Burton entitled Mozart Goes Dancing won a 2013 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition.
