WELCOME TO A NEW SPRING SEASON AT THE RCM! What better way to start the New Year than with two concerts based on Stravinsky’s musical revolution – The Rite of Spring. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of its riotous premiere, we perform the full orchestral work and offer the rare opportunity to hear his original sketched version for piano four hands. Piano takes centre stage, too, in Planet Piano – a five-day keyboard festival featuring music from around the world. At its heart is a masterclass with András Schiff. We’re delighted to welcome back two remarkable musicians to lead our orchestral programme this season. Vladimir Ashkenazy conducts the RCM Symphony Orchestra in works by Rachmaninov and Prokofiev, while Sir Roger Norrington leads performances with the RCM Classical Orchestra. Following his magnificent appearance conducting RCM musicians at the BBC Proms this summer, we’re delighted Norrington will be tackling two of the great manuscripts housed here at the RCM – Mozart’s Piano Concerto K 491 and Haydn’s Armida overture. National identity and the music that helps to define it is a theme we explore through our Awakenings chamber series and our cello festival Bohemian Dreams. This latter two-day celebration focuses on one of the most famous works written for the cello – Dvo˘rák’s concerto in B minor – which will be brought to life through a series of masterclasses with Natalie Clein and Johannes Goritzki, as well as a concert performance by one of our own star cellists. The music of Steve Reich features in two programmes in February – Different Trains for string quartet and tape, and Tehillim, a setting of Hebrew psalms for four singers and accompanying chamber ensemble. The theme of song continues with Journeying Boys, an innovative programme devised by BBC Radio 3 presenter Iain Burnside, which features the music of Britten’s Les Illuminations and highlights the colourful story of French poet, Rimbaud. Elsewhere, we celebrate the music of Lutoslawski in conjunction with the Philharmonia Orchestra series Woven Words, the Baroque Ensemble and RCM Chamber Choir present a delightful evening of Bach Cantatas, and to round off the season, we join forces with the London Handel Festival for a fully-staged performance of Handel’s great opera Imeneo, with its message of honour and duty. We look forward to seeing you. Stephen Johns | Artistic Director

The Rite of Spring Despite famously causing a near-riot at its Parisian premiere in 1913, Igor Stravinsky’s ballet score The Rite of Spring achieved rapid success as a concert piece and soon became recognised as one of the most influential musical works of the 20th century. In celebration of its 100th anniversary, these two special concerts offer up the chance to hear the work in both its symphonic form and its fourhand version for piano, arranged by the composer himself.

RCM at the Southbank Our two Southbank Centre concerts provide a fascinating chance to hear Lutosławski’s music alongside the music that he loved. The first concert has at its heart Lutosławski’s stunningly radical and hugely influential String Quartet. Then our orchestral concert features Lutosławski’s Symphony no 3 – described by its first reviewer as “a masterwork to stand beside masterpieces by Bartók, Prokofiev and Shostakovich”– alongside attractive French vignettes by Claude Debussy and Albert Roussel.
Chamber Concerts at the RCM The first of our two RCM chamber concerts presents Lutosławski’s piano music in the context of Chopin, Debussy and Ligeti, while the second features an unbroken sequence of Lutosławski’s magical miniatures.

RCM Classical Orchestra Sir Roger Norrington conductor Haydn Overture: Armida Hob. XVIII:12 Mozart Piano Concerto in C minor K 491 Brahms Symphony no 4 in E minor op 98 Following his magnificent appearance conducting RCM musicians at the BBC Proms this summer, we’re delighted to welcome back Sir Roger Norrington to conduct the RCM Classical Orchestra. The first half of this programme showcases two pieces that are very special to the RCM. The original manuscripts of Haydn’s sparkling Armida overture and Mozart’s divine Piano Concerto K 491 are both held in the RCM’s Library: two jewels in the crown of the RCM’s world-famous collections. Both manuscripts will be on display, offering audiences the rare chance to see these extraordinary and inspiring objects. After the interval, we offer up a real treat in the shape of Norrington’s thrillingly unique, historically informed interpretation of Brahms’s final symphonic masterpiece: the lyrical and intense Symphony no 4, which takes listeners on a dramatic journey, ending with the famous last movement, based on the ancient form of the passacaglia. Handel Imeneo HWV 41 7.00pm
Britten Theatre
Completed in 1740, Imeneo was Handel’s penultimate opera. In this glorious work, Handel demonstrates such complete mastery of the form that he is even able to subvert it, as what appears to be the classic love triangle between the heroic Imeneo and the lovers Tirinto and Rosmene is subverted in a wholly unexpected way… The opera features some of Handel’s most arrestingly beautiful music, including vivid solos and duos, the glorious climactic trio Consolami, mio bene and a number of short, tuneful choruses. Some of the music will sound remarkably familiar to audiences: the everresourceful Handel re-used a number of the melodies the following year in his most celebrated oratorio: Messiah. Tickets: £55, £50, £45, £40, £25 and £20 Tickets only available from the London Handel Festival Box Office Online booking from 14 January 2013 Telephone booking from 21 January 2013 London Handel Festival Box Office 01460 54660 www.london-handel-festival.com
