SPRING 2012 After a fantastic 2011, we enter the New Year with another season of exceptional shows. We are delighted to be able to welcome some of the best-known touring shows and performers on the circuit to Royal & Derngate, and also premiere a rather special season of our own. We were thrilled to recently announce that a trilogy of our Made In Northampton plays for 2012, Festival Of Chaos, has been chosen to feature as part of London 2012 Festival, a 12-week celebration of the arts in the UK as part of the Cultural Olympiad. Featuring three extraordinary new versions of classic plays, the Festival promises to once again put Northampton firmly in the cultural spotlight. Alongside collaborations with the hilarious Spymonkey and coproducer Lee Dean (who we worked with to bring audiences End Of The Rainbow starring Tracie Bennett in 2010), and with more shows to be added in the Autumn, this promises to be a terrific season. If you haven’t been to see a Made In Northampton play before, we urge you to make this the year that you do. Musical fans won’t be disappointed either with visits from The King And I, Grease and Save The Last Dance. There is even the chance to save some money when booking for all of these shows – see the MUSICAL SAVER information below. Add to this top-flight comedy, a widely-acclaimed orchestral season, drama direct from the West End and a host of shows that enjoyed huge critical success at the Edinburgh Fringe, and we are in for a busy few months! We are also proud to launch Eat and Drink, our new cafe which features a selection of delicious sandwiches, salads, soups and indulgent treats. These are all prepared by our skilled staff, in our own kitchens, and feature some of the best local produce available.

OEDIPUSSY by Carl Grose and the company directed & adapted by Emma Rice
Spymonkey Aitor Basauri, Stephan Kreiss, Petra Massey, Toby Park Director Emma Rice Set Designer Michael Vale Costume Designer Lucy Bradridge Music Toby Park and Neil Filby
FRI 3 – SAT 18 FEBRUARY The ultimate dysfunctional family. A jealous father, one messed-up son, and one mother of a brilliant comedy. Hot on the heels of their acclaimed version of Moby Dick comes an eagerly-awaited collaboration with artists from the forefront of British theatre. Spymonkey’s hilariously anarchic physical comedy and the playful storytelling of Kneehigh’s Emma Rice (Brief Encounter) and Carl Grose, combine to create an outrageous no-holds-barred subversion of the quintessential Greek tragedy - a tale of forbidden lust, accidental incest and violent murder. Inspired by Barbarella and a little bit of Bond, Spymonkey turn their unique brand of theatrical invention to this greatest of tragic tales, brought to life in typically outrageous fashion with the help of set designer Michael Vale (RSC, National Theatre, ENO), costume designer Lucy Bradridge (Cirque de Soleil) and featuring original music by Spymonkey’s Toby Park. “GLORIOUSLY ANARCHIC, CONSTANTLY ENTERTAINING” THE TIMES ON SPYMONKEY'S MOBY DICK Contains strobe lighting and nudity. Recommended for ages 14 and above.

Performed by an extraordinary cast of young people and a professional band, this bold retelling of Bizet's blistering opera propels the classic story into the present and transforms the famous score into a stunning contemporary soundtrack; hear the stirring Toreador song transformed into an indie anthem by rock guitar and heavy drum beats, and the sensual Habanera revolutionised into a feisty pop track fit for Rihanna. TUE 29 & WED 30 MAY As part of New Adventures’ 25th anniversary celebrations, Britain’s favourite choreographer (Swan Lake, Nutcracker!, Edward Scissorhands) presents a triple bill of acclaimed early works that launched his career. Spitfire ‘An advertisement divertissement’, was Matthew Bourne’s first hit in 1988, hilariously placing the most famous 19th Century ballet showstopper in the world of men’s underwear advertising. Town And Country from 1991 gave Bourne and his company their first Olivier nomination. It is remembered as the piece that crystallized the Bourne style; gloriously witty and ironic, but also strangely moving and heartfelt. It explores notions of national character from a bygone era through the evocative music of Edward Elgar and Noel Coward, amongst others. The Infernal Galop was inspired by icons of France in the '30s and '40s. This is France as seen by the uptight English imagination, with all the traditional clichés joyously paraded for our entertainment, and climaxing in Offenbach’s inevitable Can-Can!

MADE IN NORTHAMPTON 2012 SUBSCRIPTION SEASON
FESTIVAL OF CHAOS I am delighted to introduce a key part of this year’s Made In Northampton 2012 Season, Festival of Chaos (Friday 18 May – Saturday 28 July). This festival of work brings three fresh new adaptations of classic plays to the stage – Euripides’ The Bacchae, Federico Garcia Lorca’s Blood Wedding, and Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen. As an additional honour, the festival has been chosen to feature as part of the Cultural Olympiad’s London 2012 Festival, a 12-week nationwide celebration of the best in UK arts. In re-imagining these three plays, Festival Of Chaos explores the enduring relevance of the god Dionysus. As the embodiment of dance, ecstasy and chaos, Dionysus is a symbol of the raw, primal urges that are often in conflict with civilising forces of order and control. Artists have long been fascinated with how these opposing human impulses collide, epitomised in the great tragedies from the Ancient Greeks onwards. The Festival examines the forgotten power of Dionysus, and invites him back to tear apart the comfort and conventions of our material world. Played out across the ages, and across continents, it takes us from the birthplace of the Olympics to the claustrophobia of 19th Century Scandinavia, and via rural Spain to a money-hungry city increasingly out of touch with its roots. I am personally thrilled to have the opportunity to direct all three of these plays, and to be working with such extraordinary theatremakers in doing so. I do hope that you’ll join us on this journey and consider all of the benefits that becoming a subscriber to our Made In Northampton season affords. Best wishes

THE BACCHAE by Euripides A new adaptation by Rosanna Lowe
FRI 18 MAY – SAT 30 JUNE A startling new version of Euripides’ Greek tragedy The Bacchae opens the trilogy and explores a society teetering on the brink of revolution. Staged in a secret location in Northampton and featuring a spectacular original score, audiences are plunged into an unforgiving story of a modern city built on money and corporate greed, and exposed to a frenzied and theatrical world where Dionysus himself returns to take revenge on those that have forgotten him. Playwright Rosanna Lowe has previously collaborated with Artistic Director Laurie Sansom on Elektra at Cambridge Arts Theatre. Her work for Royal & Derngate has included an adaptation of Madame Bovary. Please note: The Bacchae will not be performed in the Royal auditorium but in an accessible, secret location in Northampton. FRI 25 MAY – SAT 30 JUNE Love, violence, desperation and betrayal combine in Federico Garcia Lorca’s poetic and potent tragedy Blood Wedding, which sees two young people on the eve of their wedding day. With Dionysus lurking in the shadows and a history of bloodshed pulsing through the veins of their tiny, rural community, the wedding party disintegrates, re-igniting the flames of a family feud. One of the world’s most exciting young writers, the award-winning Tommy Murphy brings his trademark wit and irreverence to Lorca’s classic play. His production Holding The Man opened in London’s West End in 2010 after its previous run at Sydney Opera House. "TOMMY MURPHY'S ADAPTATION IS AN ACT OF URGENT REMEMBRANCE. MON 25 – SAT 30 JUNE From the writers, producers, creators and director of the huge success that is Dreamboats And Petticoats, Save The Last Dance For Me will take you back through the ‘music and magic’ of the early ‘60s, a time when each passing week brought another rock ‘n’ roll classic. Written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran (Goodnight Sweetheart, Birds Of A Feather), and featuring the unmistakable music of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, this nostalgic, feel-good journey will transport you back to music’s golden era as we follow two teenage sisters through the summer of ‘63. For the first time without their parents, the siblings embark on a holiday to the seaside. Full of freedom and high spirits they meet a handsome young American who invites them to a dance at the local U.S. Air force base... But young love and holiday romance is never as simple as it sounds, and the sisters soon realise that while the world around them is still watching itself in black and white, life and love can be much more colourful.

EUROPEAN PREMIERE
FESTIVAL OF CHAOS
HEDDA GABLER
by Henrik Ibsen A new adaptation by Andrew Upton
Director Laurie Sansom Designer Ruth Sutcliffe Lighting Designer Philip Gladwell
FRI 6 – SAT 28 JULY As explored through the Festival Of Chaos trilogy, the disruptive power of Dionysus is captured here within the heart of one of the most compelling women ever portrayed in literature. Stifled by the boredom of her comfortable existence, Hedda Gabler finds herself caught in a claustrophobic marriage. Consumed by the burning desires within her, and haunted by a half-forgotten ghost ‘with vine leaves in his hair’, she sets out on a destructive path that pits her lust for drama and beauty against the social conventions of the day. Co-Artistic Director of Sydney Theatre Company Andrew Upton's adaptation showcases all the danger and theatricality of Ibsen’s masterpiece, exploring in a fresh new way why this flawed heroine has captivated audiences for generations. It was seen on Broadway in 2006 starring Cate Blanchett in the title role, and now receives its European premiere in Northampton under the direction of Laurie Sansom. Upton’s recent work includes the critically acclaimed The White Guard at the National Theatre. Design is by Ruth Sutcliffe, who received a Theatre Award UK nomination alongside Lighting Designer Philip Gladwell for 2010’s exquisite The Duchess of Malfi at Royal & Derngate.

Our Resident Storyteller Jo Blake Cave will be offering an amazing opportunity for those with an interest in storytelling to develop and hone their skills via a six week workshop each Thursday starting 1 March 2012. For information on this season’s TheatreLab, please see page 22. This offers a chance to perform and see work in progress in our Underground. For additional information on any of our Community Groups, or to book a place on our Storytelling Workshops, please call 01604 655757 or email erica.martin@royalandderngate.co.uk
