MADE IN NORTHAMPTON 2012 SUBSCRIPTION SEASON

FESTIVAL OF CHAOS When putting together the Made In Northampton season, I like to return to plays that retain a strong hold on my imagination. I realised that three of my favourite plays all explored similar themes – how deep-rooted desires can often come into conflict with social codes and expected behavior. From this central idea came the basis of our season Festival Of Chaos, which features three World and European premieres and has been chosen by the Cultural Olympiad to form part of London Festival 2012. The Bacchae kicks off the trilogy, and its message underpins much of the Festival – the conflict between Dionysus, the God of chaos, wine and ecstasy, and the civilising forces of order in society. This ancient play by Euripides, first performed in Athens almost two and a half thousand years ago, will be re-imagined for Northampton audiences in a non-traditional setting. I am thrilled that with the help of an extraordinary creative team, we will be transforming an old print works in the town centre into our stage. We are creating a seated auditorium in this central location, that is fully accessible to all of our audiences. We hope that you will come and be part of a truly one-off experience. Federico García Lorca’s Blood Wedding, the second in the trilogy, will be staged in the Royal auditorium and features the same company of actors as The Bacchae, with a performance schedule that has been designed so that you can see both plays in the same day. Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler rounds off our season later in July, looking with fresh eyes at one of theatre’s most compelling heroines. There is much more to the Festival than these three plays; Royal & Derngate’s Youth Theatre Groups and Actors Company have all taken their inspiration from the Festival’s themes and are presenting their own bold re-tellings of some classic tales. We are also featuring a series of talks looking at the legacy of Dionysus, which can be enjoyed pre or post certain performances of The Bacchae and Blood Wedding. On Midsummer’s Eve you can also immerse yourself in a unique storytelling experience, Midsummer Bacchanalia and enjoy a spectacular midnight feast! The adjacent page gives you a snapshot of all these events, so please enjoy looking through the brochure and reading more about them.

Laurie Sansom Artistic Director P.S. We are thrilled to be able to announce two further Made In Northampton productions this year – Yasmina Reza’s God Of Carnage (page 39) and Bully Boy by Sandi Toksvig (page 35). Subscribers – don’t forget that you can add these shows to your existing package and receive a significant discount.

TUE 29 & WED 30 MAY As part of New Adventures’ 25th anniversary celebrations, Britain’s favourite choreographer Matthew Bourne (Swan Lake, Nutcracker!, Edward Scissorhands) presents a triple bill of acclaimed early works that launched his career. Spitfire, ‘An advertisement divertissement’, was Matthew Bourne’s first hit in 1988, hilariously placing the most famous 19th Century ballet showstopper in the world of men’s underwear advertising. Town And Country from 1991 gave Bourne and his company their first Olivier nomination. It is remembered as the piece that crystallized the Bourne style; gloriously witty and ironic, but also strangely moving and heartfelt. It explores notions of national character from a bygone era through the evocative music of Edward Elgar and Noel Coward, amongst others. The Infernal Galop was inspired by icons of France in the ’30s and ’40s. This is France as seen by the uptight English imagination, with all the traditional clichés joyously paraded for our entertainment, and climaxing in Offenbach’s inevitable Can-Can!

You may think it's a long way down the street to the chemist. But that's just peanuts to space ... The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy became an instant and enduring classic on its launch as a radio series. Now Douglas Adams' immortal creation explodes into life again in a ground-breaking new stage show. The legendary radio and TV cast are re-united, bringing to life the characters written for them in highlights from the entire Hitchhiker’s saga. Directed by Dirk Maggs and starring Simon Jones, Geoff McGivern, Susan Sheridan, Mark Wing-Davey and the voice of Stephen Moore, this show is a self-contained adventure which will introduce newcomers of all ages to Vogons, Babel Fish, Marvin the Paranoid Android and much more.

REASON AND DESIRE IN GREEK DRAMA - A TALK SAT 16 JUNE

6PM

The battle between the head and the heart is at the core of Euripides’ The Bacchae. Dionysus’ calling for us to follow our base instincts is placed in opposition to Pentheus’ need for order and structure. This is a theme that is central to literature, art and culture from the ancient Greeks to the present day and is a concept that has fascinated artists, writers and philosophers over the centuries. Chris Carey, Professor of Greek at University College London, provides us with an insight into the concept behind the struggle between the Dionysiac and the Apollonian which form the basis of Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy. Myth is the oblique image of an unwanted truth reverberating through time. FRI 6 – SAT 28 JULY As explored throughout the Festival Of Chaos trilogy, the disruptive power of Dionysus is captured here within the heart of one of the most compelling women ever portrayed in literature.

TUE 24 JULY WED 25 JULY TICKETS Mon – Sat Eves £24 £22 £19 £13 (Premium Seats £28)

Stifled by the boredom of her comfortable existence, Hedda Gabler finds herself caught in a claustrophobic marriage. Consumed by the burning desires within her, and haunted by a half-forgotten ghost ‘with vine leaves in his hair’, she sets out on a destructive path that pits her lust for drama and beauty against the social conventions of the day.

Thu & Sat Matinees £19 £13 (Premium Seats £20)

Co-Artistic Director of Sydney Theatre Company Andrew Upton's adaptation showcases all the danger and theatricality of Ibsen’s masterpiece, exploring in a fresh new way why this flawed heroine has captivated audiences for generations. It was seen on Broadway in 2006 starring Cate Blanchett in the title role, and now receives its European premiere in Northampton under the direction of Laurie Sansom. Upton’s recent work includes the critically acclaimed The White Guard at the National Theatre. Design is by Ruth Sutcliffe, who received a Theatre Award UK nomination alongside Lighting Designer Philip Gladwell for 2010’s exquisite The Duchess of Malfi at Royal & Derngate.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK TUE 9 – SAT 13 OCTOBER EVES 7.45PM, MATINEES 2.30PM

Unanimously acclaimed by the critics, Stephen Mallatratt’s stage adaptation of Susan Hill’s bestselling novel combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality inspired by the world of film noir, transporting audiences into a terrifying and ghostly world. A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a ‘Woman in Black’ engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories the borders between make believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep... Now celebrating its 23rd year in the West End, over 7 million people have lived to tell the tale of one of the most chilling and successful theatre events ever staged.

“We can’t get involved in children’s quarrels” A riotous comedy of frayed nerves and bloated egos, God Of Carnage is one of the most successful plays of recent years, winning the 2009 Tony Award for Best Play and Olivier Award for Best Comedy. After two eleven year olds Ferdinand and Bruno are involved in a playground punch up, their well-meaning parents call a meeting to discuss the matter in a civilised manner. However, as the evening progresses and the wine starts to flow, all good intention evaporates and chaos ensues. Boys will be boys... but the adults are usually worse – much worse! Written by Yasmina Reza (Art, Life x 3), this laugh-out-loud production is directed by Kate Saxon, who delighted audiences with the beautiful The Years Between at Royal & Derngate last year.

TUE 13 – SAT 17 NOVEMBER TUE – SAT EVES 7.45PM, MATINEES 2.30PM Two Men. Two World Wars. Two lives knitted together as tight as a thrice darned sock. Critically acclaimed theatre company, Kneehigh bring you this darkly comic and deeply moving tale. Adapted and directed by Emma Rice (Brief Encounter, Oedipussy) Steptoe And Son is re-imagined for the 20th century. Bound together by birth, business and bloody bad luck, Albert and Harold Steptoe wake up every morning to the same old, same old, sickening sight of each other. Joined at the hip and heart, they bother, bicker and banter their way through life – toying with each other’s frailties like mean kittens. Do they even notice the world turning as they cling on? There are ladies if they would only look around them, and space travel… and Cliff Richard! Adapted from the legendary scripts of Galton and Simpson, this new co-production with West Yorkshire Playhouse charts the tender, cruel and surprising dance of father and son. Bound by duty, fear and poverty, they are watched over by their female Guardian Angel. She tries to save them, tries to turn their heads to the heavens, but those stubborn old work horses just won’t budge. “ONE OF THE UK'S MOST ENTERPRISING AND INNOVATIVE THEATRE COMPANIES” THE GUARDIAN ON KNEEHIGH TICKETS Tue – Fri Eves £22.50 £19.50 £18.50 £14.50 £8.50 Sat Eve £24.50 £21.50 £20.50 £18.50 £10.50

YOUNG PEOPLE

FAMILIES

We regularly deliver creative project work in a range of different art forms, aimed at engaging vulnerable and hard to reach young people. These projects empower young people to be artists, critics and audience members in their theatre and their town. The projects inspire young people from all sections of the community, from aspiring musicians, storytellers and visual artists to those who have never thought of themselves as being creative. Every project ends with a sharing, where participants can entertain, provoke and challenge their peers with what they have achieved. For more information please call 01604 655777 or email arts@royalandderngate.co.uk

Royal & Derngate is a family friendly theatre with a range of activities on offer for children and their grown-ups to enjoy together. We have regular shows and family events in our Underground spaces, offering the very young a perfect introduction to theatre, and our Move, Make & Do sessions which take place on Saturdays during term time are hugely popular with children and adults alike.

We also have our own Youth Theatre which gives young people aged 5 to 21 with all levels of experience the opportunity to train and perform in a professional theatre environment. We offer weekly workshops throughout term time that include acting, singing and dance and we produce a number of professional Youth Theatre productions every year. We also offer creative projects for young people in the school holidays and organise frequent theatre trips. Whether you want to be an actor, gain confidence or simply make new friends, please visit our website www.royalandderngate.co.uk/youththeatre to download an information pack.

We want to make your visit as easy as possible, so baby changing, high chairs, a microwave to heat baby food and spare nappies are all available, as well as special family meal deals in the cafe and family ticket offers, making Royal & Derngate the perfect place for a family day out. 2012 CELEBRATIONS

2012

Our very own Festival Of Chaos is just one of an extraordinary series of events happening in Northamptonshire to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Here is just a taster of some of the other exciting activities in store…

TORCH RELAY

GODIVA AWAKES

Torch Relay will be visiting the county on Mon 2 July where members of the public will be able to see the Olympic Flame run through the towns of Northampton, Wellingborough and Isham in the morning, before arriving at Kettering for a lunch time stop over. From Kettering, the Torch will then visit Geddington, Corby and Dingley in the afternoon before heading out of the county on its way to the evening celebrations in Leicester.

In July, Imagineer Productions’ 21st Century Godiva will awake to a spectacular performance involving dancers, actors, aerialists, musicians, pyrotechnicians, carnivalists and 220 young people in a procession marking the unveiling of this Godiva for the modern age. Powered by 100 cyclists and clothed in a coat crafted by artists from across the region, the ten-metre high large-scale puppet Godiva will then journey from Coventry to London visiting Northampton on Tue 31 July.

LIONHEART PROJECT The Lionheart Project will feature three giant handcrocheted lions in a custom-built, mobile, glass case, touring the East Midlands before arriving at the Natural History Museum in time for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Over the course of two years, artist Shauna Richardson has individually crocheted these three lions - powerful, realistic sculptures that reflect the East Midlands in both symbol and materials.
