The Queen Visits The Core

We were delighted to welcome Her Majesty The Queen to The Core in June for a specially commissioned performance. It featured local dancers led by Mickael Marso Riviére and physical theatre performers directed by Frantic Assembly’s Scott Graham. There was also music directed by James Redmond featuring members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and a performance from the newly formed Community Choir directed by Gareth Fuller with lyrics from friend of The Core, Barb Jungr.

Get Involved at The Core...

Following a celebratory season with an international flavour, The Core’s new season has a real sense of ‘home’ about it. We are delighted to be creating and presenting work in venues around the town, including performances in community centres and a new professional dance piece at Corby East Midlands International Pool (p.8). In September we welcome Corby-born director Neil Bettles, as ThickSkin – who enjoyed such success in 2011 with Blackout – bring us their new production The Static (p.11) fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe. This is followed in October by the uplifting and joyous Agnes And Walter and Me, Mum And Dusty Springfield (both p.12). November sees us celebrate our second birthday with the premiere of Barb Jungr’s Deep Roots, Tall Trees: A Corby Song Cycle (p.16), while December brings two wonderfully different Christmas shows: the enchanting The Night Before Christmas (p. 20) for ages 3+ and Grisly Tales From Tumblewater for those a little older (p.21). We have high-profile comedy with The Best Of The Chortle Awards, Danny Bhoy, Mark Thomas and Fred MacAulay; music including The Bay City Rollers Story and Limehouse Lizzy; and a wide-ranging film programme.

Me, Mum And Dusty Springfield

Agnes And Walter: A Little Love Story

Handa’s Surprise

The Bay City Rollers Story

Sat 6 October

Thu 18 October

Sat 20 October

Sat 20 October

Peppered with lyrics and songs from the iconic singer and directed by The Core’s Creative Director Chris Sudworth, Me, Mum And Dusty Springfield is Stephanie Ridings’ one-woman black comedy, which examines the bond between mothers and daughters and how we cope with loss when it’s just too late.

Agnes And Walter: A Little Love Story is a delightful flight of fancy that set the Edinburgh Festival Fringe alight with its poignant and compelling comic storytelling.

Travel to Kenya and follow in Handa’s footsteps as she journeys to see her best friend Akeyo, in the next village. Handa is taking seven delicious fruits as a surprise – but seven different animals have seven very different ideas... could you resist the sweet-smelling guava?

In 1974 the music of the Bay City Rollers became the soundtrack for a generation of teenagers and the face and voice of that soundtrack belonged to Les McKeown.

Mary is preparing to scatter her mother’s ashes. It’s not what she had in mind, but that’s down to her mother’s final demand, which, like everything else, is set within a world of Dusty Springfield. Can Mary unravel the ties that bind herself, her mother and Dusty Springfield, in the hope that this final act will enable her to move on? “A HEARTFELT PERFORMANCE” The Metro Time: 7.45pm Tickets: £10 Concessions: £8 Venue: The Lab 12

SMITH dancetheatre

A love story of long-term commitment, secret desires, daydreaming and a garden shed, Agnes And Walter is inspired by James Thurber’s classic story, The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, and features an exceptional cast that spans the generations. Crossing boundaries of dance and theatre, the work combines physical and visual performance styles including dance, physical theatre, clowning and music. FREE workshops for school and college groups of 15+. See page 36. Time: 7.30pm Tickets: £12 Concessions: £10 Schools: £8 (plus one teacher’s seat free with every 10 tickets) Venue: The Theatre

Little Angel Theatre

Adapted from the book by Eileen Browne and following last season’s The Fabulous Flutterbys, Handa’s Surprise is a blend of physical performance, puppetry, live music and song which combine to create an intimate, magical production with audience participation. “VIBRANT PERFORMERS... SINGING AND STOMPING IN SWAHILI RHYTHMS” Time Out

Hits such as Bye Bye Baby, Shang A Lang, Summer Love Sensation and Give A Little Love propelled the band to world-wide superstardom and their trademark Scottish tartan was to be seen everywhere across the planet. Join Les McKeown to reminisce and celebrate those hectic days in a night full of fun and nostalgia. Don your tartan to take a trip back to the innocent times of growing up to the sounds of the Bay City Rollers.

He will be joined onstage by a range of local writers developing original work through the Words Workshop Residency, hosted by Spike and MillieBeanz of Corby collective The Stand. There will be a pre-show Open Mic session from 6pm in the Stalls Bar.

Come and discover the next generation of the Corby Sound. Young musicians perform and collaborate on The Core’s stage in a showcase of local bands and original music created during the Words And Music Weekender.

This is a loosely-based stand up/ breakdown show which revolves around a handful of other letters I have penned out of frustration, with mixed results. It’s a show about those little annoyances. Too frivolous to be a cause. Too inconsequential to be a campaign. But just about right for that couple from Berwick-UponTweed who come to the Edinburgh Fringe every year.”
