Welcome As I write this, we are preparing to celebrate The Core’s second birthday. The centrepiece of our celebrations is Deep Roots, Tall Trees (p.5) an original collection of songs, written by Barb Jungr and some of Corby’s bestloved musicians, joined by a new Community Choir. In February I will be directing the premiere of The Adventures Of Sky, a live performance accompanied with online and real world games, which opens in Corby before shows in Amsterdam and Manchester (p.16). March sees our first 24 Hour Filmathon (p.25), raising funds for our work with young people and communities. Christmas at The Core (pp.9-13) truly offers something for everyone, from top quality theatre for family audiences in The Night Before Christmas and Grisly Tales From Tumblewater to spoken word and comedy performances, and CATS’ annual pantomime, Aladdin. The rest of the programme is packed with quality as ever, from the outstanding artists delivering our weekly Get Involved creative workshops (pp.26-34) to the household names appearing in the theatre such as Jo Caulfield (p.21), Isla St Clair (p.17), Barry Cryer & Ronnie Golden (p.18) and Suggs (p.22). Add to this our Weekender festival (p.15) and performances from a wide range of Corby’s community groups and it is a season not to be missed. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Celebrating The Core’s 2nd Birthday

Deep Roots, Tall Trees: A Corby Song Cycle Barb Jungr and Friends Sat 10 November

Celebrate The Core’s second birthday with this world premiere performance of original music, led by internationally-acclaimed singer Barb Jungr, accompanied by pianist Jenny Carr and some of Corby’s best-loved and most talented musicians, alongside a new Community Choir. At the heart of the evening is a brand new collection of songs celebrating Corby and its surrounding villages – Deep Roots, Tall Trees – written by Barb in collaboration with her fellow performers. The event will also feature some of the local musicians performing their own work.

Deep Roots, Tall Trees has been researched and written over a period of six months right here in Corby. It has been created through meeting people, collecting stories, regular jam sessions and walking in the town’s historic woodlands. The Community Choir, under the direction of Gareth Fuller, has brought together a real cross‑section of Corby’s people to create a wonderful new sound. So please join us for an unforgettable evening that will celebrate the town and its people in song. This event is a partnership between Corby Community Arts and The Core at Corby Cube.

Barry Cryer & Ronnie Golden Going Gaga

Rumpelstiltskin And The Wheel Of Fortune

Thu 7 February

Fri 15 & Sat 16 February

The dynamic duo of comedy legend Barry Cryer, of I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue fame, and former Fabulous Poodle Ronnie Golden, promise a riotous, rip-roaring night of comedy and song. Forget a combined age of 142, they deliver this with neither a safety net nor zimmer frame in sight!

Following their previous sell-out success at The Core with The Elves And The Shoemaker and Three Billy Goats Gruff, Theatre Of Widdershins return with a brand new production.

Theatre Of Widdershins

A glorious mix of Barry’s legendary jokes and stories alongside Ronnie’s skilful strumming and wicked wit make the night a unique and hilarious event.

Of all the fairytale characters, Rumpelstiltskin has got to be the most mixed up. He is helpful yet demanding; secretive yet noisy; short yet owning a name as long as his beard. Not surprisingly, this story of transformation will make you laugh and gasp at the same time!

Expect songs that deal with the burning issues of the day: voluntary euthanasia, mobile phone frustrations, Stannah Stairlifts and... John Prescott!

Using its trademark puppets, music, storytelling and transforming sets, Theatre Of Widdershins aims to create gold on stage with this new version of the Grimm’s classic tale.

Early Years

Schools Partnerships

Do you work in a family centre? Or within Early Years and Foundation Stage in a school or other setting? Here at The Core we regularly work with agencies and organisations in the early years sector and have already brought high quality theatre and dance to many children and families across Corby.

The Core regularly works with primary and secondary schools to develop residency projects and deliver one-off workshops, however we are delighted that since September 2012 we have been working with Corby Business Academy on our first yearlong Schools Partnership. The programme has been structured with key departmental and leadership staff to meet specific needs identified by the Academy to support work within a range of faculties. The current programme includes regular after school theatre and dance classes, teaching support in key subject areas, visits to performances at The Core and the development of arts activity with specific and targeted groups. If your school would like to discuss becoming a partnership school, please contact Louise Wildish, education@thecorecorby.com

Moving forwards we would like to create an Early Years Networking Group who will meet quarterly to discuss working in partnership locally and across the region. The first meeting is planned for Thursday 17 January at 3pm. To find out more or register your attendance please email Louise Wildish, education@thecorecorby.com

Teachers’ Forum

Romeo & Juliet Workshop

Thu 24 January 4pm-6pm

Our Teachers’ Forum brings primary and secondary teachers together with local artists in a partnership event with the Arts In Education team from Northamptonshire County Council. The event will highlight partnership opportunities with The Core, links to the current programme of work and advance updates of new initiatives in arts and education. There will also be a range of short taster workshops from local artists and The Core staff team, sharing ways they might work with students at each Key Stage. The session will round off with an opportunity to network with other teachers and artists over nibbles and a glass of wine.

The Core is offering workshops for schools who book 20+ tickets to see Romeo & Juliet (see page 19 for details) at the discounted price of only £50. Workshops are most suitable for students of English or Drama and can be tailored to Key Stages 3 & 4 or Post-16. Students will explore the language and text, bring characters and relationships to life through practical activities and develop a better awareness of the play as a whole. Workshops are available in the weeks commencing 18 and 25 February 2013 and are for a maximum of 30 participants. For more information or to book please contact Louise Wildish at education@thecorecorby.com

The Teachers’ Forum is open to anyone working in education in Northamptonshire and neighbouring counties. For more information or to confirm your attendance please email education@thecorecorby.com 33
