Stifled by the boredom of her comfortable existence, Hedda finds herself caught in a claustrophobic marriage. Consumed by the burning desires within her, and haunted by a half-forgotten ghost ‘with vine leaves in his hair’, Hedda sets out on a destructive path that pits her lust for drama and beauty against the social conventions of the day.

Falklands War veteran Major Oscar Hadley is sent to a combat zone to probe allegations of severe misconduct by Eddie Clark, a young squaddie from Burnley and part of a self-styled ‘Bully Boy’ unit of the British army. As the interrogation develops, the two men bond as they try to come to terms with the horrors they have both experienced at war.
Written by broadcaster and writer Sandi Toksvig and starring acclaimed film, television and stage actor Anthony Andrews, Bully Boy is a poignant and heartfelt exploration of post war trauma. It provides a startling insight both into the minds of soldiers, and into their treatment by society when they return. Academy Award-winner Anthony Andrews, who gained national recognition for his role as Sebastian Flyte in Brideshead Revisited and was most recently seen as Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin in hit film The King’s Speech, plays the Major. The role of Eddie is taken by Joshua Miles, who received rave reviews for his professional stage debut in this role last year. “SANDI TOKSVIG’S PLAY DELVES, WITH SENSITIVITY, INTO AN ISSUE OF BURNING RELEVANCE” DAILY TELEGRAPH “Toksvig’s play has a hurtling pace. TUE 9 – SAT 13 OCTOBER Unanimously acclaimed by the critics, The Woman In Black combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality inspired by the world of film noir. The formula delivers an evening of unremitting drama, transporting the audience into a terrifying and ghostly world. A lawyer engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories the borders between make believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep... Now celebrating its 23rd year in the West End, over seven million people have lived to tell the tale of one of the most chilling and successful theatre events ever staged.

Paco Peña Quimeras
Tue 13 November 7.30pm Legendary guitarist, composer, dramatist and producer Paco Peña presents his 2010 work Quimeras, directed by Jude Kelly. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Peña has expanded the possibilities of flamenco and changed perceptions of the art form by mining the richness of its traditions, while continuing to be inspired by contemporary culture. Exploring the lure of travel and the dream of a better life, Quimeras tells the story of a group of migrants who have come to Spain from Africa in search of work. The result is a marriage of both traditional Spanish and African music and dance, creating a spectacle of virtuoso performances and intimate storytelling which was described as “breathtakingly beautiful” (Daily Telegraph) after its world premiere two years ago. “The dance – by turns flamenco and high energy African movement – is superb” DAILY TELEGRAPH

Critically acclaimed physical theatre company, Kneehigh bring you this darkly comic and deeply moving tale. Adapted and directed by Emma Rice (Brief Encounter, Oedipussy) Steptoe And Son is re‑imagined for the 21st century. Bound together by birth, business and bloody bad luck, Albert and Harold Steptoe wake up every morning to the same old, same old, sickening sight of each other. Joined at the hip and heart, they bother, bicker and banter their way through life – toying with each other’s frailties like mean kittens. Do they even notice the world turning as they cling on? There are ladies if they would only look around them, and space travel… and Cliff Richard! Adapted from the legendary scripts of Galton and Simpson, this new co-production between Kneehigh and West Yorkshire Playhouse charts the tender, cruel and surprising dance of father and son. Bound by duty, fear and poverty, they are watched over by their female Guardian Angel. She tries to save them, tries to turn their heads to the heavens, but those stubborn old work horses just won’t budge.

The Mousetrap is the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre and now it embarks on its first tour, complete with a star cast, to celebrate 60 incredible years on stage.
Fresh from the hugely successful, Olivier Award‑winning show Svengali, he will once again mesmerise, shock and entertain you. Derren says, “I enjoy the stage shows more than anything else. Live on stage is the best place for what I do; it’s unpredictable, and the audience knows there’s no possibility of judicious editing.”
A group of people, gathered in a country house cut off by snow, discover to their horror that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one, the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the murderer’s identity and motive are finally revealed. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie creates an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot, where murder lurks around every corner. “The cleverest murder mystery of British Theatre” DAILY Telegraph
The master of psychological illusion, Derren Brown returns with a brand new live show.
Derren exhilarates audiences with his unique brand of entertainment. For the past 12 years he has created TV and stage performances that have stunned audiences, debunked the paranormal and encouraged many to improve and enhance their own mental abilities. This new show promises a truly unique live stage show in April – all of his previous visits to Royal & Derngate have sold out so be sure to book early!
birds of a feather Tue 30 APRIL – SAT 4 MAY Eves 7.30pm, Wed & Sat Matinees 2.30pm
The girls are back!
One of BBC TV’s most popular and fondly‑remembered sitcoms, Birds Of A Feather comes to the stage with all three of its original leading cast members, Pauline Quirke, Linda Robson and Northampton’s own Lesley Joseph. The TV series became a huge hit in the ’90s and ran for nearly ten years. Now the three stars are re-united on stage to re-create their adored characters, sisters Sharon Theodopolopoudos and Tracy Stubbs and their sex-mad neighbour, Dorien Green. This brand new show is created by The Comedy Theatre Company, producers of Victoria Wood’s touring show Dinnerladies.

BOOKINGS A postal charge of 75p applies. All online and telephone bookings are subject to a £2 transaction fee, excluding Friends, Gold Supporters, Disabled Patrons, and Group Bookings. It does not apply to those booking in person at the Box Office and, unlike many other theatres, is only applicable per-booking and not per-ticket. It has been introduced to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate. As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a small transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate. HOW TO FIND US Royal, Derngate and Underground are all accessed via our main entrance. This is situated on Swan Street, off Guildhall Road, in the centre of Northampton, approximately 15 minutes from the M1 and an hour from London by train.
