The Man Jesus Simon Callow
Mon 3 November 7.45pm This extraordinary play looks back two thousand years to witness key moments in the life of ‘the man Jesus’, through the eyes of the people who knew him. Simon Callow, one of Britain’s best-loved actors, performs this fresh and moving account of biblical stories including the raising of Lazarus, the wedding at Cana and the journey to Jerusalem. His powerful portrayal of the tyrants, traitors and madmen in Jesus’ life asks people of all faiths and none: what sort of a man was able to inspire the history of the world? Thought-provoking, thrilling and full of wit, this production premiered to great acclaim at Belfast’s Lyric Theatre, and now embarks on a strictly limited UK tour. “CALLOW RENEWS OUR SENSE OF WONDER AT THE SON OF MAN AND HIS STORY” DAILY TELEGRAPH “CALLOW AND HURT MANAGE TO KEEP US GRIPPED” HHHH SUNDAY TIMES “CALLOW IS STUNNING” BELFAST TIMES www.themanjesus.co.uk TICKETS £26 Royal

La Traviata
with ELENA DEE AND ALYONA KISTENYOVA WED 26 NOVEMBER 7.30PM The love story that gripped Paris – back by public demand. A tragic tale of searing passion and memorable music, La Traviata is Verdi’s outstanding interpretation of one of the most popular love stories of the 19th century, La Dame Aux Camelias. Based on a true story, it tells of the passionate loves and life of the consumptive courtesan, Violetta. There are many echoes of Verdi’s own life in La Traviata and he threw himself into the music. The highlights include the Brindisi, the best known drinking song in opera, the duet Un Di Felice and Violetta’s haunting aria Addio Del Passato. Writing this introduction, I can’t quite believe that it’s been a year since I moved to Northampton to join the team here at Royal & Derngate. How quickly that time has gone, and how much has happened already. I am thrilled that our next two productions will be seen by audiences across the country. Nicholas Wright’s world premiere adaptation of Pat Barker’s Regeneration will tour to 10 major venues from September and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof is a co-production with Manchester’s Royal Exchange and Newcastle’s Northern Stage. Regeneration will be directed by Royal & Derngate’s former Associate Director Simon Godwin, whose recent work at the National Theatre and Royal Court has confirmed what Northampton audiences knew long ago; that Simon is one of the most imaginative theatre makers working today. Regeneration will also provide the centrepiece to a wide range of cultural events planned as part of our collaboration with Northampton Museum and Art Gallery to commemorate Northampton’s contribution to the First World War. This follows our recent collaboration with NN Gallery on Daniel Bye’s storytelling portrait of Northampton, Story Hunt in a year that sees more organisations working together within Northampton’s Cultural Quarter than ever before. I’m personally excited to be directing Tennessee William’s incendiary masterpiece Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, which sees A Tale of Two Cities designer Mike Britton return to the Royal and the internationally acclaimed band White Lies compose original music for the production. Royal & Derngate has a long established reputation for developing some of the country’s most talented emerging artists. One of these is playwright Ella Hickson who wrote Wendy And Peter Pan for the Royal Shakespeare Company last year. This Christmas she will capture the magic and wonder of the Arthurian legends in Merlin, a spectacular, warm-hearted adventure tale for all the family. You can find out more information about these activities and all of our homegrown shows in this section. I hope you enjoy reading about them and look forward to seeing you at Royal & Derngate later this year. James Dacre Artistic Director

Craiglockhart War Hospital, Scotland 1917. Poet and soldier Siegfried Sassoon has been institutionalised in an attempt to undermine his public disapproval of the war. His Army Psychiatrist, Dr William Rivers, has been tasked with returning shell-shocked officers to the trenches, yet under Sassoon’s influence, has become tormented by the morality of what is being done in the name of medicine. Reminding us that some of the most intimate of friendships are borne from the most brutal of conflicts, Regeneration is a compelling and compassionate look at a nihilistic war and the devastating effect it had on a generation of young men. It will be directed by former Associate Director of Royal & Derngate, the Evening Standard Award-winning Simon Godwin (Strange Interlude, National Theatre) who is currently Associate Director at the Royal Court.

The stifling heat of the plantation. A relationship on the brink. A night of bourbon-soaked confrontations and a family dynasty in crisis. Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer prize-winning Cat On A Hot Tin Roof remains one of the stage’s most seductive evocations of the Deep South. Brimming with emotional intensity, this powerful family drama sees Maggie the Cat and her husband Brick return to his home on the night of patriarch and cotton tycoon Big Daddy’s 65th birthday. Keeping from him the news that he is dying, the evening spirals into disaster as the family scramble to secure their part of his inheritance.

In a contemporary staging of Sophocles’ Ancient Greek play, Antigone explores the question of state control versus individual will and the power of love over law in a dramatic story that still resonates today. Unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, she refuses Emile’s proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lieutenant Joe Cable denies himself the future
he wants with a Tonkinese girl because of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission, Nellie realises that she must seize her own chance of happiness, and is forced to confront her prejudices. Accompanied by the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein and lyrics of Hammerstein and Joshua Logan, South Pacific is performed by Northampton Musical Theatre Company.

Support us
Royal & Derngate is a registered charity. In addition to our core funding, we generate three quarters of our income through ticket sales, our bars and café, and fundraising. This fundraising encompasses an extraordinary range of support every year – from the commitment of our Business Club and Artistic Directors Circle Members, to our Name A Seat patrons, our Friends and Gold Supporters. Plus, all of our customers who add a donation when booking their tickets, either online or over the phone, are contributing in a very direct way to the running of the theatre. We are grateful to all of you. At Royal & Derngate we pride ourselves on the sheer range of live events and entertainment on offer across the year,
and our efforts to programme the best possible work for the broadest possible audience. Just last year we welcomed 292,469 visitors to our shows and films, and our extensive programme of creative projects for all ages offered ways for children, families, young people and communities to get involved – as artists, critics and audience members. Please continue to play your part and take advantage of the host of ways that you can help keep Royal & Derngate a vital part of our county: a local theatre but with a national reputation.

The above represent our usual discounts, however there are a number of shows every season where slightly different concessions apply. A separate discount structure applies to our Orchestral Season. Box Office will advise if these exceptions affect your tickets at time of booking. Only one concession type applies per ticket. All concessions are subject to availability and some may only be available for a limited period. Proof of status will be required on the first purchase of a concessionary ticket and can be checked on any subsequent ticket purchase.

Seating plan
Derngate Auditorium This seating plan give a general overview of the Derngate auditorium in a standard format. Due to the great variety of events we put on there are a range of other formats. We hope that this image will assist you when choosing your seats, but would recommend that you check with Box Office which format is being used for any given event before purchasing.
You can pay by cash if booking in person or by Visa, Mastercard, Visa Delta or Electron
RESERVATIONS Ticket reservations must be paid for within four days of booking (excluding Groups). We are unable to reserve tickets without payment within seven days prior to the performance.
POSTAGE FEE There is a 75p fee applicable to post your tickets to a UK address. We recommend that we do not post any tickets booked within seven days of the performance date, and instead will hold them at the Box Office for collection.
BOOKING FEES All online and telephone bookings are subject to a £2.80 transaction fee. Friends, Gold Supporters, Disabled Patrons, and Group Bookings are exempt. This fee does not apply to those booking in person at the Box Office and, unlike many other theatres, is only applicable per-booking and not per-ticket. It has been introduced to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate. As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a small transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate.
GIFT VOUCHERS Gift Vouchers for Royal & Derngate and the Errol Flynn Filmhouse are available to buy from the Box Office in any denomination. We also sell National Theatre Tokens.
CONDITIONS OF SALE Please note that we are unable to refund or exchange tickets. For sold-out shows only, we will accept returned tickets for re-sale, providing a gift voucher for the full amount in return. Please note: Information is correct at the time of going to press. We reserve the right to make any alterations to the programme, performers, times, ticket prices and Box Office opening hours. Every effort will be made to advertise changes in the local press. Some events or performances may be advertised in the national media prior to publication in the brochure and this is beyond the control of the Management.
Royal Auditorium Boxes in the Royal Auditorium are sold subject to technical requirements and may not be available for purchase.

ACCESS INFORMATION
The Royal and Derngate auditoria and our Underground spaces are all accessed via our main entrance. This is situated on Swan Street, off Guildhall Road. The Errol Flynn Filmhouse is located adjacent to Royal & Derngate in Albion Place and can be accessed from Derngate or Royal & Derngate’s main entrance. Both venues are located in the centre of Northampton, approximately 15 minutes by car from the M1 and an hour from London by train. The postcode for SAT NAV devices is NN1 1DP.
We are committed to enabling as many people as possible to enjoy performances at Royal & Derngate. For full and updated access information, please visit the website or ask for a leaflet at Box Office.
There are train connections approximately 15 minutes walk from the theatre.
Car Parking See the map below for the car parks we recommend. Please note that Derngate is currently closed at the junction with Bedford Road and Victoria Promenade, due to roadworks (as part of road improvement scheme). The easiest car park to use while the road closure is in place is St John’s Multi-Storey car park. Please allow extra time for your journey. You can now obtain a parking ticket for St John’s Multi‑Storey from the Box Office or theatre bars. Simply show your theatre ticket and purchase a barrier-ready exit ticket for £1.
Disabled Customers are entitled to a concession on most performances. For those requiring assistance, disabled patrons may also bring a companion free of charge. • The Sennheiser Infra-red Enhanced Hearing System is available from Box Office. To ensure that you purchase tickets in seats with optimum coverage, please check with Box Office at time of booking. • Royal & Derngate has level access into the building and each auditoria, with a number of wheelchair spaces in each and lift access to each floor (excluding upper-circle). • Guide and hearing dogs are welcome and water can be provided. If you wish to take your dog into the auditorium, please let Box Office know when booking so that suitable seats can be allocated for you. • A limited number of disabled parking spaces are available for evening shows at no charge. Please reserve these spaces with Box Office in advance of the performance. Please look for the following symbols on the show pages and diary (pages 56-59): Audio Described Performances Sign Language Interpreted Performances StageText Captioned Performances Touch Tours Relaxed Performances A half-hour touch tour is available before some of our audio‑described Made In Northampton performances.
