The correspondence between what we produce on our stages and the many other ways in which we engage with our local community is at the heart of our work at Royal & Derngate. The passion with which this work is delivered – both onstage and off – has been such an inspiring thing to be a part of since I began here 18 months ago. Our Made In Northampton 2015 season aims to reflect this energy and range, staging classic stories in imaginative new ways and premiering stories that need to be told today. This new season of epic plays looks back to a 12th Century Northampton and forward to Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World of 2540. In the company of some of our largest ever casts, audiences will enter the Elizabethan garden of Peter Whelan’s The Herbal Bed, the terrifying Victorian world of Patrick Hamilton’s Gaslight, the frozen land of Georgia Pritchett’s The Snow Queen and the Parisian streets of Cyrano de Bergerac. But wherever and whenever these plays are set, they have been chosen or commissioned because I believe that each reflects and considers an experience of life in Britain today. In each, the central character is an outsider: questioning authority, challenging prejudice, breaking down barriers, fighting to find their place in the world. As Artistic Director I want our theatre to live at the heart of its community whilst bringing the country’s most brilliant theatre makers to create original and vividly imaginative productions that will address the major concerns of our time. That is why we are premiering work by major playwrights such as Arthur Miller, Ron Hutchinson and Georgia Pritchett alongside new work from important emerging writers such as Chris Bush, Dawn King, Oladipo Agboluaje and Daniel Bye. We have invited an eclectic mix of international artists to collaborate with them at Royal & Derngate this season, ranging from celebrated composers to ground breaking directors and designers. And again, work that is Made In Northampton will premiere here before travelling to over 24 cities nationwide.

WORLD PREMIERE This Christmas, the Royal stage will be transformed into the mythical kingdom of Camelot for a magical new take on the legend of Merlin. Join three childhood friends on an action-packed journey of a lifetime. For Prince Arthur, turning sixteen means becoming a knight, but he is torn between a duty to his country and to his friends. Young squire Merlin is struggling to keep his extraordinary magic powers under control and the gutsy Princess Gwen proves that she might just be the bravest of them all. Featuring some of Camelot’s most exciting and hilarious characters, from petulant princesses to vile villains and talking trees, this brand new production tells the story behind one of the most famous legends of all time... as you have never imagined it before. Directed by Liam Steel and written by Ella Hickson (Wendy And Peter Pan, Royal Shakespeare Company), this play with songs combines exquisite, joyful storytelling with new music by Jon Nicholls. It is an ideal Christmas treat for all the family.

“I’m going to take the simplest approach to life of all... I’ve decided to excel in everything.” Cyrano de Bergerac: a poet and a soldier, a brawler and an incurable romantic... a hero. The first among men and totally lost among women. Blessed with being brilliant at everything, cursed by having the biggest nose in all of France. Cyrano is hopelessly in love with Roxane, his equal in wit but every bit as beautiful as he is ugly. He dare not confess his love for fear of rejection, so instead becomes a protector, a confidante and friend. Christian, a young handsome cadet but not the sharpest sword in the armoury, catches Roxane’s eye and she begs Cyrano to keep him safe. With his mighty heart breaking, Cyrano sets about his task, using his unequalled skill as a poet to write ravishing love letters between the two, with convoluted consequences.

“Sweet, sweet, sweet poison for the age’s tooth.” Charting one king’s struggle to retain the crown against claims that he is not the rightful heir, William Shakespeare set several scenes of King John in Northampton. Marking the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, this ambitious new production will be performed by a large company of actors and musicians in the ancient candelit knave of The Holy Sepulchre, which was frequently visited by King John and his court during his reign. A striking staging will transport the church back in time to a twelfth century world of politics, power struggles, unlikely alliances and inheritance battles. Written during a time of great political uncertainty in the Elizabethan court, King John will explore, in this election year, how across the course of history, the power struggles of the ruling class have little changed. Directed by Artistic Director James Dacre, this ambitious production which will tour nationally, sees Royal & Derngate co-producing with Shakespeare’s Globe for the very first time. #KingJohn

“All right then show me already whose fault it is! They skinnin’ us alive here, so whose fault is it already?!” Amidst the political tensions of 1950s America, Arthur Miller’s The Hook (The Crucible, All My Sons) was suppressed by the FBI for fear that it could cause unrest in New York’s dockyards. To mark the centenary of the Pulitzer Prize‑winning playwright’s birth, Royal & Derngate and Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse will co-produce the world premiere of Miller’s ‘play for the screen’ adapted for the stage by Emmy Award-winning Ron Hutchinson. Sixty years on, the dockyards of Brooklyn’s epic waterfront will come alive on the Royal stage for the extraordinary story of Marty Ferrara, a longshoreman who challenges the mobsters and gangs of ’50s New York and takes a stand against the corruption he witnesses from the authorities who control the docks. Community. Identity. Stability. Aldous Huxley’s ground-breaking novel is brought to life in a new version by award-winning playwright Dawn King, opening at Royal & Derngate before a major national tour. Witness the horrors of a genetically engineered class system: a Brave New World where people are always happy; where they get what they want, and they never want what they can’t have. They’re well off; they’re safe; they’re never ill and they’re not afraid of death. No mothers or fathers, no wives or children – no bonds, no attachments, no rejection and no jealousy. The surprise arrival of a retired detective leads to a shocking discovery that will shake her respectable Victorian marriage to its core. At Royal & Derngate, we are committed to an accessible pricing policy and offer discounts wherever possible. In some instances, ticket prices and available discounts are dictated by external promoters and there is no flexibility for the provision of discounts. The above represent our usual discounts, however there are a number of shows every season where slightly different concessions apply. A separate discount and pricing structure applies to our Orchestral Season and the performances of King John at The Holy Sepulchre Church. Box Office will advise if these exceptions affect your tickets at time of booking. Only one concession type applies per ticket. All concessions are subject to availability and some may only be available for a limited period. Proof of status will be required on the first purchase of a concessionary ticket and can be checked on any subsequent ticket purchase.

PAYMENT OPTIONS
This seating plan give a general overview of the Derngate auditorium in a standard format. Due to the great variety of events we put on there are a range of other formats. We hope that this image will assist you when choosing your seats, but would recommend that you check with Box Office which format is being used for any given event before purchasing.
You can pay by cash if booking in person or by Visa, Mastercard, Visa Delta or Electron
RESERVATIONS Ticket reservations must be paid for within four days of booking (excluding Groups). We are unable to reserve tickets without payment within seven days prior to the performance.
POSTAGE FEE There is a 75p fee applicable to post your tickets to a UK address. We recommend that we do not post any tickets booked within seven days of the performance date, and instead will hold them at the Box Office for collection.
BOOKING FEES All online and telephone bookings are subject to a £2.80 transaction fee. Friends, Gold Supporters, Disabled Patrons, and Group Bookings are exempt. This fee does not apply to those booking in person at the Box Office and, unlike many other theatres, is only applicable per-booking and not perticket. It has been introduced to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate. As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate.
GIFT VOUCHERS Gift Vouchers for Royal & Derngate and the Errol Flynn Filmhouse are available to buy from the Box Office in any denomination. We also sell National Theatre Tokens.
CONDITIONS OF SALE Please note that we are unable to refund or exchange tickets. For sold-out shows only, we will accept returned tickets for re-sale, providing a gift voucher for the full amount in return. Please note: Information is correct at the time of going to press. We reserve the right to make any alterations to the programme, performers, times, ticket prices and Box Office opening hours. Every effort will be made to advertise changes in the local press. Some events or performances may be advertised in the national media prior to publication in the brochure and this is beyond the control of the Management.
Royal Auditorium Boxes in the Royal Auditorium are sold subject to technical requirements and may not be available for purchase.
