“IT BRINGS A NEW AND TIMELESS TWIST TO THE ANCIENT LEGEND”
As I’m writing this, we are deep into rehearsals for both King John and Cyrano de Bergerac. We are so excited about how both processes are developing and seeing two such exceptional teams bringing their ambitious ideas to bear. Both productions are marked by their ensemble casts, evocative original music and thrilling choreography. Cyrano de Bergerac builds upon our partnership with Newcastle’s Northern Stage that began with last year’s production of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, continuing our commitment to staging epic classical dramas in imaginative new ways. Why commemorate the sealing of the Magna Carta, an 800 year old document that many historians argue had little impact in its own time? Why produce King John, a play depicting the political tensions of a society 800 years before our own? Because in this election year, the political debates and social dilemmas of that time continue to speak directly to the fractured political climate of our own age. Staged under candlelight in the Holy Sepulchre Church, King John will explore whether the power struggles of the ruling class have ever really changed. We will then mark the centenary of Arthur Miller’s birth with the world premiere of The Hook. Several years in the making, our production with Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse will see the dockyards of Brooklyn’s Red Hook waterfront come alive for the story of Marty Ferrara, a longshoreman who challenges the mobsters and gangs of ’50s New York and takes a stand against the corruption he witnesses from the authorities who control the docks. We will then travel back in time to the chilling Victorian home of Patrick Hamilton’s suspenseful thriller Gaslight and forward to Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World of 2540. Gaslight will be directed by Lucy Bailey whose visionary productions of The Postman Only Rings Twice and Dial M For Murder have redefined the art of the theatrical thriller, and Brave New World will see a unique collaboration between one of the country’s finest writers Dawn King and groundbreaking composers These New Puritans. Before we know it, Christmas will then be upon us and we’re thrilled this year to be producing Georgia Pritchett’s mischievous retelling of The Snow Queen with joyful original songs by Dougal Irvine.

The wit and panache of one of literature’s most famous love triangles is given brilliant new life in Anthony Burgess’ translation of Edmond Rostand’s classic novel. In this physically dynamic new production, directed by Northern Stage’s Lorne Campbell, the stage is filled with passion, bravado, joy and heartache. Cyrano is hopelessly in love with Roxane, his equal in wit but every bit as beautiful as he is ugly. He dare not confess his love for fear of rejection, so instead becomes a protector, a confidante and friend. Christian, a young handsome cadet but not the sharpest sword in the armoury, catches Roxane’s eye and she begs Cyrano to keep him safe. With his mighty heart breaking, Cyrano sets about his task, using his unequalled skill as a poet to write ravishing love letters between the two, with convoluted consequences. Duels are fought, honour defended, villains defeated, and cakes eaten. “THE BOUNCE AND BRILLIANCE OF ANTHONY BURGESS’S TRANSLATION” WHATSONSTAGE.COM #Cyrano

PART OF 2015 SEASON TICKET A co-production with Shakespeare’s Globe
Charting one king’s struggle to retain the crown against claims that he is not the rightful heir, William Shakespeare set several scenes of King John in Northampton. Marking the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, this ambitious new production will be performed by a large company of actors and musicians in the ancient candlelit knave of The Holy Sepulchre in Northampton, which was likely often visited by King John and his court during his reign. A striking staging will transport the church back in time to a twelfth century world of politics, power struggles, unlikely alliances and inheritance battles.

Written during a time of great political uncertainty in the Elizabethan court, King John will explore, in this election year, how across the course of history, the power struggles of the ruling class have little changed. Directed by Artistic Director James Dacre, with original music by Royal Opera House Associate Orlando Gough, this ambitious production with an extraordinary ensemble cast, will tour nationally. It sees Royal & Derngate co-producing with Shakespeare’s Globe for the very first time. #KingJohn

BY PETER WHELAN THE SECRET LIFE OF SHAKESPEARE’S DAUGHTER
“I have always wanted that which I cannot have.” PART OF 2015 SEASON TICKET A co-production with English Touring Theatre and Rose Theatre Kingston
When William Shakespeare’s daughter is publicly accused of adultery with her neighbour, her husband chooses to stand by her, suing her accuser for slander. In doing so, their lives fall under the glare of intense public scrutiny in this emotional thriller, based upon real events from Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer of 1613. A powerful exposé of the contradiction between human desire and social convention which seeks to repress it, Peter Whelan’s moving and uplifting play provides a beautiful evocation of life in Shakespearian England. It was first produced to great acclaim by the Royal Shakespeare Company before transferring to the West End and Broadway. “MARVELLOUS, TENDER, WISE AND GENEROUS OF SPIRIT… A REMARKABLY PERSUASIVE AND TOUCHING PORTRAIT OF A FAMILY IN CRISIS” DAILY TELEGRAPH ON THE HERBAL BED #HerbalBed

CONFLICT & COMMUNITY
Royal & Derngate and Northampton Museum and Art Gallery are currently working together to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War with a programme of events spanning 2014 and 2015, including:
DEBATE: 100 YEARS OF CIVILIAN TARGETED ATTACKS
AUBERS RIDGE COMMEMORATION DAY SAT 9 MAY 12PM-4PM AT ABINGTON PARK MUSEUM On 9 May 1915, as part of the British offensive on the Western Front, the Battle of Aubers Ridge took place. The battle was a disaster for the British Army, but especially for Northampton, which suffered almost 1000 casualties.
THU 16 JULY 7PM AT ROYAL & DERNGATE Civilian fatalities in wartime have climbed from five per cent at the turn of the century to more than 90 per cent in the wars of the 1990s.* This number continues to grow. Join us as we ask a distinguished panel of speakers to discuss the change in the tactics of war over the last century. From historians to satirists, we will invite our panel not only to look back but forward at the years ahead. *UNICEF Report - Patterns In Conflict: Civilians Are Now The Target

If you are aged 14-26, you can join our Real Discounts Scheme and access a number of free and discounted tickets for selected performances. Call or visit Box Office for details. At Royal & Derngate, we are committed to an accessible pricing policy and offer discounts wherever possible. In some instances, ticket prices and available discounts are dictated by external promoters and there is no flexibility for the provision of discounts. The above represent our usual discounts, however there are a number of shows every season where slightly different concessions apply. A separate discount and pricing structure applies to our Orchestral Season and the performances of King John at The Holy Sepulchre Church. Box Office will advise if these exceptions affect your tickets at time of booking. Only one concession type applies per ticket. All concessions are subject to availability and some may only be available for a limited period. Proof of status will be required on the first purchase of a concessionary ticket and can be checked on any subsequent ticket purchase.

SEATING PLAN
Derngate Auditorium This seating plan give a general overview of the Derngate auditorium in a standard format. Due to the great variety of events we put on there are a range of other formats. We hope that this image will assist you when choosing your seats, but would recommend that you check with Box Office which format is being used for any given event before purchasing.
You can pay by cash if booking in person or by Visa, Mastercard, Visa Delta or Electron
RESERVATIONS Ticket reservations must be paid for within four days of booking (excluding Groups). We are unable to reserve tickets without payment within seven days prior to the performance.
POSTAGE FEE There is a 75p fee applicable to post your tickets to a UK address. We recommend that we do not post any tickets booked within seven days of the performance date, and instead will hold them at the Box Office for collection.
BOOKING FEES All online and telephone bookings are subject to a £2.80 transaction fee. Friends, Gold Supporters, Disabled Patrons, and Group Bookings are exempt. This fee does not apply to those booking in person at the Box Office and, unlike many other theatres, is only applicable per-booking and not perticket. It has been introduced to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate. As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate.
GIFT VOUCHERS Gift Vouchers for Royal & Derngate and the Errol Flynn Filmhouse are available to buy from the Box Office in any denomination. We also sell National Theatre Tokens.
CONDITIONS OF SALE Please note that we are unable to refund or exchange tickets. For sold-out shows only, we will accept returned tickets for re-sale, providing a gift voucher for the full amount in return. Please note: Information is correct at the time of going to press. We reserve the right to make any alterations to the programme, performers, times, ticket prices and Box Office opening hours. Every effort will be made to advertise changes in the local press. Some events or performances may be advertised in the national media prior to publication in the brochure and this is beyond the control of the Management.
Royal Auditorium Boxes in the Royal Auditorium are sold subject to technical requirements and may not be available for purchase.
