This Autumn, after 11 rewarding years as Chief Executive, I will be leaving Royal & Derngate. As has been true throughout this time, the brilliant support of both our audiences and funders has enabled the team to put together yet another fantastic season of shows and events for you to enjoy. We are so proud to be opening the National Tour of Kinky Boots, bringing it home to Northampton; and I am especially excited by the forthcoming Made In Northampton season, planned by our Artistic Director James Dacre, whose next production, the UK premiere of Katori Hall’s Our Lady Of Kibeho, is announced in this brochure. Last year more than 296,000 audience members came to see shows with us and a further 82,000 enjoyed films in our thriving two-screen Filmhouse. Thank you! Please continue to support and be proud of your local theatre. There really are very few towns in the UK that can boast such a broad cultural offer under one roof, such a committed team and such promise for the years ahead.

What happens when you look death squarely in the face and how do you find the strength to crawl back towards life? Joe Simpson’s best-selling memoir, turned BAFTA‑winning film, charts his struggle for survival in the Andes in 1985. The heart of the story is Joe’s mental battle as he teeters on the brink of death and despair in a crevasse from which he can’t possibly climb to safety. Alongside this is the appalling dilemma of Simon Yates, perched on an unstable snow-cliff, battered by freezing winds and desperate to rescue his injured climbing partner who hangs from a rope below him.

Cinderella Snow Maiden The Nutcracker Performed by The Russian State Ballet of Siberia

Accompanied by The Orchestra of the Russian State Ballet The story of The Nutcracker, the famous fantasy ballet, begins on Christmas Eve. Be swept away to a fairy-tale world where toys spring to life, the Mouse-king and his army battle the Nutcracker Prince, and travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins. Seasonal sparkler, the Snow Maiden, follows the titular character as she dances into the human world. Captivated by the colourful village and the people who live there, she ventures too far and is swept up by feelings of love, temptation and betrayal. When finally she surrenders herself completely and warms to love, her heart melts in a tragic embrace. Cinderella, the world’s favourite rags to riches fairytale where dreams can come true, is a magical mix of Prokofiev’s energetic score and lively choreography. UK PREMIERE

“A TRANSFIXING NEW PLAY WHICH HAS THE GRIPPING INTENSITY OF A THRILLER” NEW YORK TIMES

In 1981 at Kibeho College in Rwanda, a young girl claimed to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary who spoke to her of a coming genocide. She was ignored by her friends and scolded by her school but then another student saw the vision, and another, and the impossible appeared to be true. Katori Hall’s Our Lady Of Kibeho presents us with a haunting insight into the true events that captured the world’s attention. A vibrantly theatrical

meditation on faith and everyday miracles, it was hailed “the most important play of the year” by the Wall Street Journal when it premiered in New York in 2014. Featuring stirring original music, this UK premiere of Our Lady Of Kibeho promises to be an epic event. It will be directed by Artistic Director James Dacre, who premiered Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop which won the Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2010.

60 MILES BY ROAD OR RAIL

THU 27 SEPTEMBER 7.45PM

FRI 28 SEPTEMBER 7.45PM

Since 2010 writers from across the UK have returned to their home-towns to pen plays about the places that shaped them. These plays commissioned by Royal & Derngate and Paines Plough are performed by the playwrights themselves, coming home to tell their tale.

An advertising jingle has been re-released as a pop record. But as thousands of families flock in, some are concerned that Northampton’s identity is starting to slip away…

Now Come To Where I’m From visits Northants to invite four of the city’s finest playwrights to join this celebrated project. TICKETS £10 ROYAL

Directed by Andy Routledge and created with local artists and local people, 60 Miles By Road Or Rail presents a playful retelling of Northampton’s past. TICKETS £10 ROYAL
