A big thank you to all the audience members who joined us last season. We have had quite an Autumn to remember with the extraordinary success of both Kinky Boots and The Lovely Bones. Christmas is upon us already with the stage premiere of Jill Murphy’s The Worst Witch, the swashbuckling pantomime Peter Pan and our Under 7s studio adventure The Everywhere Bear. We’re looking forward to launching our Made In Northampton 2019 season with a spectacular new play from Olivier Award-winner Katori Hall. Our Lady Of Kibeho tells the astonishing true story of how three Rwandan schoolgirls forever changed their school, their community and their country. We then premiere 2017 Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro’s wartime portrait of memory, regret and undeclared love, The Remains Of The Day, and a stunning new version of Ibsen’s Ghosts by Mike Poulton, who returns to the Royal following the success of A Tale Of Two Cities. In the Summer, we bring Shakespeare’s iconic East Midlands story of Richard III to life on the Royal stage before then introducing legendary American playwright August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated Two Trains Running to UK-wide audiences for the first time. All these productions bring together local talent with leading artists from across the world to create entirely original work here in Northampton. We are proud to be hosting this year’s Devoted & Disgruntled in January, a nationwide convention for everyone who loves, makes and lives theatre. Do come along if you’d like to join these inspiring discussion groups about the future of the performing arts. A number of shows this Spring are selling fast already – don’t miss your chance to catch Matthew Bourne’s exquisite Romeo And Juliet or the world famous thriller The Mousetrap, staged for the very first time in the intimate Royal Auditorium. We have some brilliant savings available too – see the details of our Drama Season Ticket on page 2 which is bigger than ever this Spring. We look forward to welcoming you to Royal & Derngate soon.

UK PREMIERE

Rwanda, 1981. Schoolgirl Alphonsine (Gabrielle Brooks), claims the Virgin Mary has appeared to her in the village of Kibeho, warning of the unimaginable: her country becoming hell on earth. Her friends ignore her; her teachers Sister Evangelique (Michelle Asante) and Father Tuyishime (Ery Nzaramba) scold her. Until another student sees the vision, and then another... Katori Hall’s Our Lady Of Kibeho tells the astonishing true story of these girls and the haunting events that changed their school, their community and their country forever. A spectacular meditation on faith and everyday miracles, it was hailed “the most important play of the year” by the Wall Street Journal when it premiered in New York. Vividly designed by Jonathan Fensom (The Herbal Bed), with stirring live music by Orlando Gough (King John) and vibrant choreography by Diane Alison-Mitchell (Soul), this UK premiere promises to be an epic event. Featuring one of the largest companies to ever have appeared on the Royal stage, it will be directed by Artistic Director James Dacre, whose premiere of Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop won the Olivier Award for Best New Play. “A TRANSFIXING NEW PLAY WHICH HAS THE GRIPPING INTENSITY OF A THRILLER” NEW YORK TIMES

Adapted by Mike Poulton Director Lucy Bailey Cast includes Penny Downie and Pierro Niel Mee

A shattering story of the consequences of secrets and lies in a new adaptation by Mike Poulton (A Tale Of Two Cities, Wolf Hall, Imperium). Constrained for years by societal expectations, widow Helen Alving is determined to escape the ghosts of her past but when her son Osvald returns home it is clear that some legacies are impossible to avoid. With secrets kept and lies told, the ghosts of her husband’s actions demand bigger sacrifices now than ever before. Ibsen’s masterpiece is a damning comment on the morality and hypocrisy of 19th century life and this searing new version asks if much has changed since it was written over 100 years ago. Helen is played by Penny Downie, whose extensive stage and television credits include Hamlet in the West End and ITV’s Downton Abbey. The production reunites Mike Poulton with director Lucy Bailey who has delighted Royal audiences with her productions of Gaslight and Love From A Stranger which was recently nominated for the UK Theatre Award for Best Touring Production. “DELIVERED WITH REAL TEXTURE AND CONVICTION, IT IS GRIPPING ENTERTAINMENT” THE TIMES ON LUCY BAILEY’S LOVE FROM A STRANGER “A SPARKLING MIKE POULTON SCRIPT ADAPTATION” WHATSONSTAGE ON A TALE OF TWO CITIES #GhostsThePlay

There’s a controversial new president in the White House, and racial tensions are on the rise. It is Pittsburgh, 1969, and the regulars of Memphis Lee’s restaurant are struggling to cope with the turbulence of a rapidly changing world. The diner is in threat of being torn down, a casualty of the city’s renovation project that is sweeping away the buildings of a community, but not its spirit. The iconic American playwright August Wilson paints a vivid portrait of everyday lives in this defining moment of American history. When Two Trains Running opened on Broadway in 1992, its legendary premiere won TONY and Drama Desk Awards. STEWART FRANCIS INTO THE PUNSET FRI 3 MAY 8PM

SAT 4 MAY 7.30PM

The star of Mock The Week, Live At The Apollo and Crackerjack embarks on a brand new show, in this, his last stand-up tour EVER! Stewart has received international acclaim in the US and his native Canada, as well as here in the UK. Winner of TV station Dave’s Funniest Joke Of The Fringe, this hugely successful one-liner wizard has become a household name over the last decade, thanks to his ‘perfectly crafted gags’ and expert timing.

In this outrageously camp new show, (that he was going to call Bed Knobs And Knee Pads but was advised might not sell too well in Harrogate), renowned homosexual Julian Clary will bare his soul as never before in the interests of light entertainment.

See him before he heads off... Into The Punset. Brace yourself Northampton, it’s going to be emotional…

He’ll murder some well known songs along the way, no doubt, read you a sneak preview from his next memoir A Night At The Lubricant and make withering remarks about punters foolish enough to sit in the front row. You know the kind of thing. It’s the only life he knows. Don’t miss out, this might well be the final mince.

BOOKING INFORMATION Box Office 01604 624811 Website www.royalandderngate.co.uk Royal & Derngate, Box Office, Guildhall Road, Northampton, NN1 1DP Group Sales 01604 620066 Membership 01604 635868

BOX OFFICE OPENING HOURS On performance days, our Box Office is open from 10am until 15 minutes after the last performance commences (10.30am on Mondays). On non-performance days it is open 10.30am–6pm on Mondays and 10am–6pm Tuesdays to Saturdays. On Sundays and Bank Holidays it is open from 1 hour and 30 minutes prior to the first performance commencing. You can pay by cash if booking in person or by Visa, Mastercard, Visa Delta or Electron.

DISCOUNTS AND CONCESSIONS Under 16s, Over 60s, Students, Job Seekers and Disabled Patrons may be able to claim a discount on their tickets. Please let us know if you are eligible for a concession at the time of booking and note that at some performances only certain types of concession may apply. Friends, Gold Members and Artistic Director’s Circle Members also often make savings on our regular ticket prices. For selected performances an allocation of tickets can be purchased at reduced prices by Groups who also benefit from extended payment terms and a dedicated team member to support their booking. Our Season Ticket packages offer reduced prices when booking for three or more shows – details can be found on page 2. Only one discount can be applied per ticket and all discounts are subject to availability and may be withdrawn at any time.

POSTAGE FEE There is a £1 fee applicable to post your tickets to a UK address. We recommend that we do not post any tickets booked within seven days of the performance date, and instead will hold them at the Box Office for collection.

TRANSACTION FEE A transaction charge of £3 applies to all bookings over £15, except for our members, Disabled Patrons and Group Bookers. This charge is only applicable perbooking and not per-ticket. The transaction charge exists to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate.

As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate. We will continue to tell you about these charges, whether you are booking online, over the phone or at the counter.

CONDITIONS OF SALE Please note that once purchased tickets cannot be refunded. Ticket exchanges may be offered for the same production on payment of a small per ticket fee. For sold-out shows we will accept returned tickets for re-sale up to 24 hours prior on the understanding that a gift voucher (less transaction fees) will be provided if the tickets are re-sold. Any tickets found to be sold via an unauthorised agent may be void without refund and the ticket holder refused entry.

STAYING IN TOUCH Our Box Office and website will ask when you book if you want to receive further information from us about Royal & Derngate’s events and activities. We will then record your wishes and use them to inform what you receive from us in future. You can update these preferences at any time by accessing your account via our website or by calling Box Office. Full information on how we use your data can be found at www.royalandderngate.co.uk/privacy.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS All details were correct at time of going to print. We reserve the right to make any alterations to the programme, performers, times, ticket prices and Box Office opening hours. All concessions are subject to availability and some may only be available for a limited period. All prices are subject to change. Proof of status will be required on the first purchase of a concessionary ticket and can be checked on any subsequent ticket purchase. Some events or performances may be advertised in the national media prior to publication in the brochure and this is beyond the control of the Management. Smoking is not permitted anywhere within the theatre or filmhouse.

ENHANCE YOUR VISIT Our bars are the perfect place to enjoy a pre‑show or interval drink. The main Theatre Bar offers a streamlined selection of beer, wines, spirits, soft drinks and coffees to relax with friends before the show. At our Foyer Bar, opposite the Theatre Shop, enjoy a wider range of beverages, plus some of our grab-andgo snack options. Next to the bar there are gourmet hot dogs from Franks and frozen yogurt with a delicious range of toppings. Don’t forget, you can beat the interval queue by placing your order ahead of the performance at the drinks pre‑ordering podium in the middle of the foyer.
