Six years ago Pope Benedict XVI stunned the world by quietly announcing he would resign, the first pope in 700 years to do so. What drove this arch-conservative to break with sacred tradition and cede the way for Cardinal Bergoglio – a tango-dancing, football-loving reformer with the common touch - to become Pope Francis, one of most powerful men on earth? Anton Lesser (Game Of Thrones, The Crown) plays Pope Benedict in this new play from Anthony McCarten, the 2019 Golden Globe and BAFTA-winning, and Oscar‑nominated writer of Bohemian Rhapsody, The Theory Of Everything and Darkest Hour. It reunites Artistic Director James Dacre with 2018 Tony Awardnominated designer Jonathan Fensom (Our Lady Of Kibeho, King John). Together, Pope Benedict and Cardinal Bergoglio grapple with their complex pasts and uncertain futures. From coming of age under dictatorships in Germany and Argentina, to the scandal of sexual abuse by the clergy – they offer two opposing visions for the Church today. Shining a light into one of the world’s most secretive institutions, The Pope is at once a candid portrayal of two men testing the limits of their faith and an exploration of the role of religion in an age of social and political upheaval. At its heart lies a timeless question: in moments of crisis, should we follow the rules or our conscience?

THE WARDROBE ENSEMBLE’S

In folklore, pelican mothers feed their young on their own blood. In 2019, four sisters are trying to divide their mother’s house between them. Joy wants a baby, Storm wants to be seen, Sage wants to be paid, Maia doesn’t want anyone to find out her secret and Granny’s in a wheelchair on day release. Mum’s presence still seeps through the ceiling and the floors. The Pelican Daughters are home for the last time.

Zog is eager to win a golden star at Madam Dragon’s school. He tries so very hard, perhaps too hard, and he bumps, burns and roars his way through years one, two and three. Luckily, the plucky Princess Pearl patches him up ready to face his biggest challenge yet… a duel with knight, Sir Gadabout the Great! Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved Zog comes to life in this magical adaptation by Mike Shepherd (Kneehigh) with Johnny Flynn’s sumptuous score and a fantastical design by Katie Sykes. Roaring fun for all ages.

There’s a controversial new president in the White House, and racial tensions are on the rise. It is Pittsburgh, 1969, and the regulars of Memphis Lee’s restaurant are struggling to cope with the turbulence of a rapidly changing world. The diner is in threat of being torn down, a casualty of the city’s renovation project that is sweeping away the buildings of a community, but not its spirit. The iconic American playwright August Wilson paints a vivid portrait of everyday lives in this defining moment of American history. When Two Trains Running opened on Broadway in 1992, its legendary premiere won Tony and Drama Desk Awards. Directed by the 2018 winner of the RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award, Nancy Medina, this major revival will introduce this Pulitzer Prize shortlisted modern classic to UK-wide audiences for the first time.

“One time I bought a lasagne from the supermarket, heated it up in the oven and ate a bit of it and it wasn’t very nice so I put it in the fridge because it felt wrong to dump a whole lasagne in the bin and then later on I ate a spoonful of the cold lasagne because I was drunk and it was absolutely delicious. It was 4am. I then changed the name of a WhatsApp group I was a part of to Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999 because I had been thinking a lot about how 1999 was the best year of my life and also about how much I hate myself sometimes. The next day I was asked to name my new show. Come along.” – James Acaster

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

FRI 12 – SUN 14 JULY 2.30PM & 7.45PM When a young woman’s choice is to marry a man of her father’s choosing or die, should she refuse? A series of mishaps and misunderstandings unfold when she takes matters into her own hands and escapes through an enchanted forest with her lover. Is this a comedy with fools, fairies and flowers? Or is this a tragedy of manipulation, disorder and dark creatures? Throw in a chaotic battle between the Fairy King and Fairy Queen with some unusual capers between amateur actors and we ask the question: who is really in control of this midsummer night? Directed by Erica Martin, with live music performed and written by Inlak’esh, and with design and puppet‑making by Ross White, Royal & Derngate’s The Actors Company explore the darker side to William Shakespeare’s most popular play.

For selected performances an allocation of tickets can be purchased at reduced prices by Groups who also benefit from extended payment terms and a dedicated team member to support their booking. Our Season Ticket packages offer reduced prices when booking for three or more shows – details can be found on page 4. Only one discount can be applied per ticket and all discounts are subject to availability and may be withdrawn at any time.

POSTAGE FEE There is a £1 fee applicable to post your tickets to a UK address. We recommend that we do not post any tickets booked within seven days of the performance date, and instead will hold them at the Box Office for collection.

TRANSACTION FEE A transaction charge of £3 applies to all bookings over £15, except for our members, Disabled Patrons and Group Bookers. This charge is only applicable perbooking and not per-ticket. The transaction charge exists to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate.

As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate. We will continue to tell you about these charges, whether you are booking online, over the phone or at the counter.

CONDITIONS OF SALE Please note that once purchased tickets cannot be refunded. Ticket exchanges may be offered for the same production on payment of a small per ticket fee. For sold-out shows we will accept returned tickets for re-sale up to 24 hours prior on the understanding that a gift voucher (less transaction fees) will be provided if the tickets are re-sold. Any tickets found to be sold via an unauthorised agent may be void without refund and the ticket holder refused entry.

STAYING IN TOUCH Our Box Office and website will ask when you book if you want to receive further information from us about Royal & Derngate’s events and activities. We will then record your wishes and use them to inform what you receive from us in future. You can update these preferences at any time by accessing your account via our website or by calling Box Office. Full information on how we use your data can be found at www.royalandderngate.co.uk/privacy.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS All details were correct at time of going to print. We reserve the right to make any alterations to the programme, performers, times, ticket prices and Box Office opening hours. All concessions are subject to availability and some may only be available for a limited period. All prices are subject to change. Proof of status will be required on the first purchase of a concessionary ticket and can be checked on any subsequent ticket purchase. Some events or performances may be advertised in the national media prior to publication in the brochure and this is beyond the control of the Management. Smoking is not permitted anywhere within the theatre or filmhouse.
