There’s a controversial new president in the White House and racial tensions are on the rise. It is Pittsburgh, 1969, and the regulars of Memphis Lee’s restaurant are struggling to cope with the turbulence of a rapidly changing world. The diner is in threat of being torn down, a casualty of the city’s renovation project that is sweeping away the buildings of a community, but not its spirit. The iconic American playwright August Wilson paints a vivid portrait of everyday lives in this defining moment of American history. When Two Trains Running opened on Broadway in 1992, its legendary premiere won Tony and Drama Desk Awards. Directed by the 2018 winner of the RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award, Nancy Medina, this major revival will introduce this Pulitzer Prize‑shortlisted modern classic to UK-wide audiences for the first time. “A RICH SOCIETAL PORTRAIT... BIG THEMES THROUGH SMALL DETAILS” NEW YORK TIMES #TwoTrains19

Join us for this uplifting tale inspired by the true story of Musharaf Asghar, a student on the hit television show Educating Yorkshire. Dewsbury, 2013. Mushy, a young man with a debilitating stammer, finds himself at the centre of a television documentary. In a moment of inspiration from his teacher, Mr. Burton, he starts to find a rhythm in his voice through rap music. Social media erupts hailing it a miracle cure and both teacher and pupil become overnight celebrities. Rifco Theatre Company (Pyar Actually, Dishoom!) bring you the world premiere of this heart-warming new play written by Pravesh Kumar (Laila The Musical, The Deranged Marriage) with lyrics by award-winning British rapper Raxstar (Keep It Undercover). The production stars Varun Raj (Dubailand, Baar Baar Dekho), Oliver Longstaff (Operation Neptune, Absurd Person Singular) and Medhavi Patel (Three Sat Under The Banyan Tree, Women Of The Mahabharata). #MushyPlay

A PLAY ABOUT GROWING UP. WITH FOOD.

A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a woman in black engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. Join the millions of theatre-goers worldwide who have experienced “the most brilliantly effective spine-chiller you will ever encounter” (Daily Telegraph). Susan Hill’s acclaimed ghost story comes dramatically alive in Stephen Mallatratt’s ingenious stage adaptation. This gripping production, directed by Robin Herford, is a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror. “A MARVELLOUS EXERCISE IN TENSION, SPUN FROM PERFECTLY PACED STORYTELLING” THE INDEPENDENT

Toast vividly recreates Nigel Slater’s childhood through the tastes and smells he shares with his mother, culminating in the young Nigel’s escape to London. From making the perfect sherry trifle, through the playground politics of sweets to the rigid rules of restaurant dining and a domestic war over cakes, this is a moving and evocative tale of love, loss and... toast. DIRECTED BY JULIET FORSTER

In 1950s New York, respected longshoreman Eddie Carbone lives a life of seeming stability with his wife and niece in a tight knit, immigrant community bound by moral codes of justice and honour. But the surprise arrival of his Sicilian cousins unravels all that they have built together as the young men search out work, wealth and love.

“My town – where everyone has an apartment to spare with a skyline view, And even improbable dreams come true”

In the shadows of the Brooklyn Bridge, the American Dream is but a shimmering mirage in Arthur Miller’s Tony Award-winning, timeless play.

Thrown together for a wild weekend in the city that never sleeps, their adventure becomes a musical whirlwind of confession, frustration and excess. Will these two endearing misfits provide the ultimate test for the theory that opposites always attract?

Following the success of our 2015 Made In Northampton production of Arthur Miller’s The Hook, we return to the Brooklyn longshore in an epic production directed by Juliet Forster (Sense And Sensibility) and featuring a community ensemble. “WILL ALWAYS STAND WITH THE MASTERPIECES OF IBSEN, SHAKESPEARE AND SOPHOCLES” NICHOLAS HYTNER

It’s Christmas Eve and Dougal has travelled from Northampton to New York for his father’s wedding. At JFK Airport he’s greeted by Robin. Tomorrow her sister becomes his stepmother and Robin’s dreading it. Dougal can’t wait.

This newly commissioned romantic comedy is filled with heart-warming and hilarious songs from composer Jim Barne and local writer Kit Buchan, winners of the 2018 MTI Stiles + Drewe Mentorship Award, celebrating the very best of emerging British song‑writing talent. #TheSeasonMusical

HHHHH “AN ABSOLUTE MUST SEE” WHAT’S GOOD TO DO

Stanley Yelnats can’t catch a break. Born into a family cursed with bad luck, it comes as no surprise when he finds himself accused of a crime he didn’t commit.

A gripping portrait of life in wartime Berlin and a vividly theatrical study of how paranoia can warp a society gripped by the fear of the night-time knock on the door.

Sent to a labour camp as punishment, he is tasked with digging one hole, five foot wide by five foot deep, every day. He’s told it is to build ‘character’. But the tyrannical Warden is definitely hiding something. How will Stanley and his fellow inmates deal with her demands, her two cronies, plus the fearsome rattlesnakes and yellow-spotted lizards? And will Stanley and his new friends unearth what’s really going on?

Based on true events, Hans Fallada’s Alone In Berlin follows a quietly courageous couple, Otto and Anna Quangel who, in dealing with their own heartbreak, stand up to the brutal reality of the Nazi regime. With the smallest of acts, they defy Hitler’s rule with extraordinary bravery, facing the gravest of consequences.

Holes is the brilliant, inventive and creative new stage show based on the multi-award-winning novel and the Hollywood blockbuster. This hit production is a thrilling and off-beat comedy adventure and is perfect for adults and children aged 8 and up.

Adapted by Alistair Beaton (Feelgood, The Trial Of Tony Blair) and directed by Artistic Director James Dacre (Our Lady Of Kibeho, The Pope) this timely story of the moral power of personal resistance sees the Gestapo launch a massive hunt for the perpetrators and Otto and Anna finding themselves players in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

A HUGE HIT ’S AT THIS YE ARH EDINBURG FRINGE FESTIVAL

Royal & Derngate’s Resident Ensemble Company, The Wardrobe Ensemble, return following an acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe run this summer.

In 1910 the unknown Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel set sail for New York as part of Fred Karno’s famous music hall troupe.

Four sisters are trying to divide their mother’s house between them. Joy wants a baby, Storm wants to be seen, Sage just wants to remember, Maia doesn’t want anyone to find out her secret and Granny’s in a wheelchair on day release. The Pelican Daughters are home for the last time.

On this journey, Charlie and Stan shared a cabin and then spent two years together touring North America, with Stan as Charlie’s understudy.

The Wardrobe Ensemble, creators of our acclaimed Education, Education, Education, use their trademark irreverent humour and lovable characters to tackle the idea of what it means for young people to grapple with inheritance, loss and justice in this comedy about four sisters trying to come to terms with their mother’s death.

Stan talked about Charlie all his life.

“LIVELY AND ENTERTAINING” DAILY MAIL “POLISHED AND FIZZY” THE GUARDIAN Contains very strong language - parental discretion advised.

In Charlie Chaplin’s highly detailed autobiography Stan Laurel is never mentioned. Playing fast and loose with the facts and with an original piano score composed by Mercury Award-nominee Zoe Rahman played live each night, The Strange Tale Of Charlie Chaplin And Stan Laurel is no nostalgic bio-drama, but a hilarious and deeply moving homage to two men who changed the world of comedy forever. Co-commissioned by the London International Mime Festival. The events in this play are fictional. This play is certainly not endorsed by the estates of Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel or anyone else for that matter!
